- 4/6/18: This Thunderbolt has taken more lightning strikes than any other siren I have heard of. This is the 1000T behind the Walmart and by US-6. The lightning strikes have taken its toll. Wavers horribly and doesnt rotate. Im sure they have a replacement on order. FD drove by while it was sounding, so no need calling. Im guessing either when it last got struck, it fried the rotator or melted the belts, who knows.
Update: siren has been replaced with a 2001-130.
Nooooooooooooooooooooo well it needed to be anyway but it’s still sad to see it go
@@safetran50 Hopefully someone buys it and restores it? It would be nice to see it restored and sold to a small town or something looking for refurbished warning systems that can't afford the newer ones.
@@enderpea5251 cities like to hold on to their trash, but it doesn't hurt to ask
I will miss thunderbolt
I think this was the same siren before it ended up getting sick and struck by lightning.
ua-cam.com/video/RJGkfgE2Fjo/v-deo.html
The fact that it's still running after being struck by lightning multiple times is incredible.
hey its a thunderbolt its enemy is a lightning bolt that attacked it lol
Ha ha, very punny!
true
This goes to show that things back in time were built to last
@@MiddleTNSirens you're godawm right
For a siren that's had the bad luck of being struck by lightning multiple times (#1 enemy to sirens, 1 strike is usually a death sentence) the fact it still turns on and the chopper gets to a decent speed (even if the pitch keeps shifting) is shocking. She's determined to still do her job even with a fried rotator and a chopper that's struggling to maintain a steady pitch.
There's a reason why it's called Thunderbolt!
Thunderbolt 1000t siren productions I feal u it has been stuck a few times but it still running is amazing expect the pich dropping other than that that is amazing!
This is why Tbolts are untouchable.... If only they still made them 😞🔊
@@thunderchild2756 im littery a thunderbolt
@@Geaccw-ps6xm Unfortunately I heard this particular siren was replaced by a newer model 2001 siren. :(
I don't usually comment on videos, but I am an employee of the City of Napoleon Fire Department and what I have to say is that yes, this siren has been removed from service and replaced with a 2001, however is still property of the City... And I am (gradually) working on restoring it. The reason for the fact that it sounded like a dying cow is that it had a cracked chopper bearing. All the windings are good. The brushes are good. This bearing has already been replaced and when I tested the chopper by plugging it directly into the wall (120V) it sounds like it's supposed to (or at least the way it's supposed to with no blower). The blower is fine, all that was wrong with it was a mass of bird nests that I disposed of. The reason it wasn't rotating is that the starter capacitor for the rotator motor is shot. I have yet to install a replacement, however I have no reason to think that there is anything more wrong with it than that.
At some point I have to figure out just which camera I used to document my rebuilding of the chopper so I can post it, until then just trust me IT IS INDEED FIXED and being stored on City property... And as long as I work for the City I will do everything I can to make sure it DOESN'T end up on GovDeals!
Thanks for the reply and glad it's fixed and didn't end up on govdeals or the scrap yard.
Any updates on it?
So sad. This is why us siren enthusiasts need to petition for these works of art to be taken care of and maintained.
It’s not a lack of maintenance. This siren was struck by lightning several times, frying its electrical components
That poor sick Thunderbolt. So sad that this beautiful siren has not been repaired. I sure hope that this siren is restored and can remain in service longer. Or else be homed at a siren enthusiast's residence.
If you read the Comments you will find out it was REPLACED altogether
Thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening me!
Very sick??? Sounds more like it's in cardiac arrest. Break out the defibrulator. CLEAR!!!!
Lol
The 3t22 we have is sick and kind of keeps a steady tone. It sounds like a model 5BT
Than suddenly,, lightning..
Can we classify this as attack?
Tigers9596 good one
You guys are so punny!
ha
Nice one. But it really sounds like attack.
YES
Guess it said can't be a thunderbolt without lightning
Very true
Just drove by it, still up and pointing in that direction!
It sounds like its doing fast wail.
Poor thing! :(
OOF, this thing needs its chapstick. Its lips hurt real bad!
Napoleon Dynamite reference.
Yea
They're frying the motor even more by running it
Yea I saw that pore thing running like that
@@daboyjames It almost looked like it was smoking from the top but it might of just been clouds.
@@daboyjames you mean poor
Funny thing is... Napoleon Ohio NEVER sets our sirens to attack. We always do alert. This siren is sick due to the tornado outbreaks of August 2016 and many other lightning strikes.
I lived really close to it and so I've heard a few lightning strikes on it
Update: Tommy, Spencer, and I checked on this thing this past Friday, and it sounds even worse now, especially on startup. However, it was surprisingly able to keep a fairly steady pitch after running for about a minute, but it doesn't reach nearly the speed it should.
That's impressive. This thing is like a tank. Just wont give up
Y'know, since this thing has taken lightning bolts like they were nothing, I'd definitely want to have this thing refurbished. If it still runs even now, there's hope for it
And this is why west shore services exists
yep thats why they killed the o'fallon tbolt it was worse than this bad ass bolt
Sounds just like the one in that awesome storm chasing video titled "Crane MO creepy thunderbolt siren" 🔊😍
that thing was struck bad u can see the black marks on the top but the o'fallon thunderbolt was struck too
I used to love this siren. After 30 years, this thing used to pack an ear-rapping 121.3 decibels! It’s really sad to see this siren go, but we all knew this day would come.
R.I.P thunderbolt - 1964-2020
You mean earrape
As of October, a 2001 (most likely a 130) has replaced this siren. A youtuber who lives in Napoleon commented on Spencer Harman's video.
Well if its true about damn time
_TB-1000T: When I said that I was hit by lightnings, it wasn't a joke!_
Huh??
*Oh I get it now.*
This siren sounds comparable to the one at Jtown high school.
My high schools thunderbolt is even lower pitch than that, except it doesn't fluctuate speeds and Pitch like this one is doing it stays the same speed and pitch, but doesn't try to speed up any faster or higher, and it can rotate as well.
The chopper I have an idea of what's going on worn out motor electrically and mechanically also could be build off of junk inside, clean it out every once in awhile would make a big difference! But what was the cause of it not rotating? Broken belt? Stripped gears?
It was struck by lightning so many times that I'm not sure anyone knows
@Gipsy Avenger I believe it was directly struck. It has black marks on top. Might be dirt too but it took a beating back in 2016 when a tornado came in August. Idk how that siren still works (sorta). But the siren was directly in the tornados path before the tornado lifted (thankfully). I would know. I was there! We just had a bad thunderstorm with high winds.
@Gipsy Avenger the whole thing was struck so all of it got wrecked
@Gipsy Avenger I don't see it idk
@@AUOrangeCats The start relay might of died then, the rotator relay probably to protect the motor itself. But since the chopper runs on a universal motor with carbon brushes, it probably doesn't need a Relay or Capacitor. So immediately I'm gonna guess that the relay or cap is bad for the rotator, the motor can't start or run, and the carbon brushes are unstable with the stator being short and fried in the chopper motor. The blower I think has it's own separate 220-240 volt power source but just in the same grid. That's why it's running just fine.
Hope they fix it
Is it smoking at the end?!?!😱
Shea Goff omg wait yeah it is
The pitch got lower too!!
That's a bad sounding Siren and it's a surprise for it to still run after being struck by lightning multiple times it surprises me a lot
Thunderbolts are amazing
I've heard my share of sick thunderbolts, but good lord, this one takes the cake!
You see the video of the super sick thunderbolt in Auglaize Twp OH? That's even worse
@@amtrak3501 no sorry.
Sounds like its crying for help.
Poor siren :(
Is it smoking? 0_0
It seems the chopper motor and rotation motor have been badly damaged in the lightning strikes. Also, if you listen closely, you can hear the blower.
Murrfarms and Blue10AEMA come save the day for this poor tbolt!
Ha.
Thunderbolt 1000t: ATTACK !!
I'm pretty sure the major issue is the brushes and bearings.
Same.
The rotator might have a bad component or belt.
Rotator broken?
This thunderbolt has seen better days JUST LISTEN TO TO THAT AWFUL SOUND!!!!
Well it looks in good shape so hopefully just minor faults that will be fixed up soon 🙏
Karla Whyte I thought so, as well. Could it be due to low power levels???
Vern Davis probably not, lightning strikes tend to fry the components of the motors on the siren
😔 so sad to think an amazing, iconic siren like this will no doubt be replaced by some crappy modern thing which will probably explode the first time it gets hit by lightening ⚡😟
@@thunderchild2756 Like those Wellens? 😂🤣
booooooooOOOOOOOOOO boop....
@@thunderchild2756 Don't get me wrong, Wellens made the famous siren head sounds we know of today when malfunctioning after 4 years but don't replace sirens just because they have a Cap that needs to be replaced!!
Oof she needs some work! And I thought the one near my high school was bad! It even started smoking near the back of the chopper compartment if you look closely, either from the chopper grinding or a dying motor.
_or it could just be clouds!! XD I just can't tell._
Ender Pea it’s not clouds because it’s flowing very steadily from the chopper cap, plus the entire sky around it is gray
Actually no I think some of of it is just clouds but I do think there’s a little bit of smoke too
@@Elizabeth-ts4om It sounds like it's grinding at higher pitch, but sounds like bad or burnt carbon brush connection at lower pitch. And the longer it ran, the weaker it got. It might be the motor.
@@Elizabeth-ts4om I still can't figure out an obvious cause for the rotator. A burnt motor is possible, but I don't think that's a common problem. I'm thinking either a bad Relay, or a bad belt.
Ender Pea
If you read the description, you would know that this siren was struck by lighting several times. The lightning strikes fried the motor and rotator
Hey, now we know why it’s called thunderbolt
Maria Varalli playing Italian bagpipe.
RIP anyone's ears in that particular direction
Ikr 😂😂😂😂
At least they'd be the ones to hear it! I'd rather have bloody ears than die because I couldn't hear it a mile out from the opposite direction. That whole make me a great target for those tornado terrorists.
Nothing like that would kill anyone
It would only hurt their ears if they got to close
Google maps street view from October 2018 shows that this siren is still here.
As of last week, it still is.
@Gipsy Avenger napoleon Ohio USA
@@1000BT yes it did but when I went there last month I seen it moved as well but after the test, still same position
@@amtrak3501 It might have a Cap that needs to be replaced. But for the chopper same goes for the brushes.
We used to have a tbolt in my home town till it was silenced 3weeks prior to its replacement it was replaced by a hörmann ECN-3000 tha could do hi-lo and pulse
The undead thunderbolt
Got struck by lightning multiple times, and it still works.?!
its just something about the sound that makes me feel ssad
World's fastest fast wail
It sounds like it's grinding against something inside the chopper housing.
I agree with you on that sounds like parts inside are grinding against each other
Unfortunately it was struck by lightning several times. Usually I'd say worn brushes but this is like fried armature shorted stator windings kind of deal. The rotator motor and probably other components for the rotator are all probably completely fried. Rumor has it this Thunderbolt 1000T was replaced by a 2001-130 and the Napoleon fire department had this siren sent to actually be restored! I guess there's some light shined at the ending of this sirens' commission.
Oh man, this poor thing is crying for help. Hopefully it can be repaired soon, or put out of its misery.
I feel bad for my brother thunderbolt
This is a list of all the problems:
1. Rotor and collector Rings need replaced
2.clogged
Please refer to the description
It needs to be restored.
Will it get scraped?
Hopefully not if they choose to send it in somewhere to restore it, but that siren was struck by lightning so many times they would probably have to replace the entire half of the electrical wiring with new motors and relays.
I found this on my gfs playlist lol
The rotater is broken
That's because it's been struck multiple times by lightning.
@@amtrak3501 So they know what electrical component is burnt out? Motor? Relay?
They need to fix the rotator
Has this been replaced yet?
Nope!
now it is.
Is this siren still there
Still there. Based on the last recording of it I’ll be dead by the end of the year
as of October 2020, it's been replaced by a newer 2001. presumably a 130.
@@pidgeydoodles7549 I think it was replaced a little earlier but I might be wrong. There's a siren with a similar fatal condition in Riceville IA that I believe was also a lightning victim. The Chopper motor struggles to stay running at its pitch and the rotator is fried and never moves. It also has intake solenoids being a model that has the capability of following Hi Lo commands. Unfortunately I was never able to find a video of it running with that program so I wouldn't be surprised if the lightning fried the solenoids too. That one I believe is still up today.
can you smell burning
Poor siren can’t rotate :(
Poor thunderbolt
They are clicking test botton
This is like attack kinda lol. But this thing is dead.
It's sounds like a siren in 1940s audio
Why is it not rotating ???
It was struck by lightning.
@@FireRescue80 Did the town ever find out what part of the rotator is faulty from it?
It just needed a lot of newer brushes
Can’t even hold a steady note... R.I.P

That sounds horrible. :(

It’s doing ok 👌 ish
