This is how all deck techs should be. Top work fellas. I would never have considered Primeval’s Glorious Rebirth. Thanks NNs, you make the best, easiest to follow EDH content on the net
I know I'm late, but I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned "Thundermaw Hellkite", best dragon to clear blockers, and "Ojutai, Soul of Winter". These two have won me so many games when played. Good vid tho.
4:31 thrakkus the butcher can be paired with atarka world render, because thrakkus doesnt give double strike, he doubles the power of each dragon you control when he attacks. So kinda like giving quad damage if you add double strike. You can also pair those with warstorm surge and crucible of fire.
I know I'm super late to the party, but I wanted to point out that Scion of the Ur-Dragon does not retain its ability once it becomes a copy of another dragon, so Atarka is not a source of double strike that you can use unless scion has not attacked yet and will stay as Atarka (Atarka triggers on declaring as attacker). I have a scion deck that has in the past used this strategy for fast wins. The sequence is to activate scion's ability multiple times, putting multiple copies of the ability on the stack. On the first resolution, which is the last one put on the stack, you fetch the 'firebreather.' This is usually moltensteel dragon so you can pay life to pump it (phyrexian red to get +1/+0). Then the second activation resolves, and you fetch out either Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, Dragon Tyrant, Atarka (if you have not attacked yet), or really whatever source of double strike you can come up with. I would usually attack first, and then put the transformations on the stack if the opponent did not play an instant in response. That way I could have scion becomes Silumgar, the Drifting Death to get hexproof and avoid paying life into a dead attack. These days though, I try to play it as a graveyard shenanigans deck to make it more fun to play against, more fun to play, and better in multiplayer.
Atarka, World Render is a great and underrated commander, I can’t count how many people I’ve killed with her+inquisitors flail or by flashing in a dictate of the twin gods. It’s hard to win with combat damage in EDH so she provides another good wincon.
You’ll probably say none of these are good enough and I probably play more for theme but in mono red dragon tribal I find ‘Dragon breath’ a useful haste enabler and ‘Spit flame’ a handy emergency removal spell. (Because both recur) although high cmc I also find knollspine dragon very useful for card draw. (Comments have already covered Utvara Hellkite but I find that essential too) - far too cmc expensive and hard to pay off without mana echoes but dragonstorm can really help close out a game. Also needs haste enablers. (At worst it’s a 9 mana tutor for your most needed dragon into play which will often only be 2-3 extra on top of the cost of the dragon) There’s also a few new interesting dragon choices since this video came out.
I think any card in a dragon deck (or any commander deck) needs to do more than one thing. Just giving haste isn't enough. Lightning Greaves gives haste and hexproof, Temur Ascendency gives haste and card draw. There are lands that provide haste... while also being a land. Wasting a card slot on a card that gives one of your dragons haste and not much else doesn't seem strong enough to me.
No Utvara Hellkite or Dragonmaster Outcast? Utvara an 8 cost 6/6 dragon that puts a 6/6 dragon token for every dragon attaching! Even if he's your only dragon on the field if he's if he's left on the field for 3 turns you can turn 1 dragon to 8 dragons in 3 turns! Dragonmaster Outcast is a 1 red mana 1/1 Shaman that at the beginning of your upkeep if you control 5 lands create a 5/5 dragon!
Correct me if I`m wrong guys, but I think you missed Utvara Hellkite which is probably one of the strongest dragons in the game and if the opponents don`t take care of it it can win the game by itself in just a couple of turns. The Ur Dragon is my main deck so I`d say you guys did mention most of the great stuff. Good job. Love the advices you give. I think I managed to improve most of my decks because of them.
One of the better synergies I've noticed while playing The Ur-Dragon deck is a "4 power or greater matters" so to speak. Temur Ascendancy giving haste AND card, Greater Good netting at least +1 in cards off of every Dragon you sacrifice (to reanimate later or just to avoid steal/exile effects) and newest Terror of the Peaks dishing out 4+ damage straight to the face is what makes in my opinion a Dragon deck run at way higher levels. I've personally cut every single planeswalker besides Sarkhan the Mad, because it's an easy "kill button" that gets around pillowforts. And besides that I've found that unfortunately Drakuseth as much as I love him is waaay better in Scion or heavy reanimator decks, while THE Ur-Dragon is more of a "fair" general.
Moltensteel will always be my favorite dragon. Can't count the amount of times the phyrexian firebreathing got me a win that firebreathing wouldn't have.
I have a kolaghan deck! It is awesome at getting out damage but my friends don't let her live to attack if they can help it. Still working on making it faster and more versatile, which involves a lot of the new dragons coming out with hefty standard-driven price tags, most of which I don't have yet. Atsushi is another great 4-drop around the corner (cheap by dragon standards!)
Y’all missed the original Khan of Takir dragons. Silimguar: whenever a dragon attacks, creatures defending player controls get -1/-1 till end of turn. Ojutai says whenever a dragon attacks, tap target creature defending player controls and it doesn’t untap on its controllers next untap step.
What I really like about Steel Hellkite is that you can pay 0 and get ride of these pesky little (or big) tokens. It's a pretty versatile card and if you have a lot of mana to dump into it nothing stops you to activate it multiple time for 1,2,3, etc. It's almost a budget staples I include in most of my decks for this reason
y i just made a feldon deck and it's hard not to use all the dragons that i have (i got a mono red dragon deck and the ur dragon deck). God feldon is awesome
Nice video as usual. My first edh deck was zirilian of the claw, I wish it made your dragons die at the end step. The exile clause makes you jump through so many hoops, its still alot of fun to play.
Yeah that card is interesting, I used to play it in my Lathliss deck and it got to throw Balefire Dragons and Monarch Dragons and even the extra combat guy at people from out of nowhere! Typing on my phone so the names elude me
i must have missed this vid! I guess it helps with the tuneup for Rith with dragons fresh in your minds haha, although Rith is saproling master instead of dragon tribal ;)
Wow. I'm so disappointed that archwing dragon wasn't even mentioned at all here. You can trigger dragon tempest/scourge of valkas every turn with that dragon alone for 2, red, red. Cheap and effective.
Also Sarkhan Masterless, he makes it so if you or a planeswalker you control is attacked each dragon you control deals 1 damage to the attacking creature(s), so if you have 3 dragons on the field anything attacking that is less than 3 toughness will be killed without being blocked! He's especially good if you're running multiple Sarkhans and Ugin because his +1 turns all planeswalkers you control into 4/4 dragons until end of turn!
What!? You didn't mention [insert Dragon card name], it is very good. Its [insert Ability] does [insert effect]. I use it all the time to great effect!
Here pretty late but the reason chromium turns into a human is based on their lore They respected the human society unlike their brethren and pulled a baphomet by turning human and living among them to learn from them
OK, ima let you finish, but as a man who's run dragon decks for 10+ years, Prossh. 6 mana 5/5 and he can freely sacrifice off your own stuff for +1/0 and comes into play with 6 0/1 kobold. The value, those 6 kobold are the sleeper hit. Now you have 6 blockers to cover you on the next 6 biggest things your opponent is throwing. As well as the opportunity to be sacrificed off for damage. Do not sleep on that damage, and additional combat phase, or double strike, and you just one shot someone with Commander damage. And that's just the basic stuff. It also opens up devour opportunities, stealing and sacrificing your opponents stuff, and let's get it clear, Jund is the ultimate colour combo. You gotta have some Sarkhans in there, most importantly Sarkhan the Mad, the card that let's you kill a player with your dragons, and then burn another one for the same total dragon damage. Jund, ramp, power, tutor. This is the way, this is the fire.
Omgosh, I JUST ordered a Kolaghan deck I assembled, and you guys release this bad boy! Fates Reforged Silumgar is a good boardwipe when you swing with a handful of dragons, FR Dromoka makes your dragons bigger, FR Ojutai freezes down opponent's permanents. DRagons are straight up my thing, so... Oh yeah! Sarkhan Unbroken! His +2 gives you a card and a mana of any color for a dragon and his ultimate is "put any number of dragons from your library directly into play". If you can get him to his -9 you just win.
For me that's one of the cards that's too expensive for its cost. I usually just throw in a spell that can deal damage like Fiery Confluence over it and keep my dragons in the more castable 4-6 range for the most part

Funny you say that no dragon can cost 1 and all dragons are at least 4/4, Slumbering Dragon costs a R and is a 3/3 flying that can't attack or block unless it has 5 +1/+1 counters and when whenever a creature an opponent controls attacks you or a Planeswalker you control put a +1/+1 counter on slumbering dragon, great card for sac outlets and a cheap way to do dragon payoffs
It's okay, I think we say most of them cost 4+ I mean it's very difficult to play mono red sac so you'd need black but the card is playable in Lathliss. Had it in my version if I remember correctly
@@NitpickingNerds you don't need to play sac in mono red to run a couple of sac outlets especially ashonds altar, always good card to ramp especially in decks that don't run green and play big creatures, lightning coils is a decent pay off for mono red sac, it doesn't count tokens that you sac though so you do have to build around but it also works as a somewhat board wipe deterrent
