Some of my tech: - Bounty of the Luxa is awesome for ramping out the commander and helps refill your hand with more dragons. - Maelstrom Nexus lets your big dragons cascade into more big dragons. (Sunbird's Invocation is good for this too.) - Descendant's Path is like a miniature Lurking Predators that plays into the tribal theme. It's much better than e.g. Elemental Bond. - Dragonlord Kolaghan is underrated. It doesn't matter that you can't make them lose 10 life with her trigger because granting haste to all your dragons while also being a 6/5 herself is excellent. - Golos, Tireless Pilgrim ramps out the Ur-Dragon, searches up utility lands, and vomits dragons onto the battlefield. - Taurean Mauler is awesome at 2 mana. - Keruga the Macrosage is a shockingly viable companion. I was able to run it just by cutting two or three cards. - Grave Upheaval is a very strong mana fixer in this deck. You naturally have a lot of powerful reanimation targets for its spell mode. - Selvala's Stampede is a must-have for a deck with so many beefy dragons! See the Unwritten is similarly fantastic and needs more love. - Kilnmouth Dragon is ginormous and can murder stuff when it's not attacking. You don't even need a lot of dragons in hand for it to be good. - Crucible of Fire needs to get cut. It's the definition of overkill. Anything that grants haste or double strike or hexproof or indestructible etc. is just going to be better. - The dumb goblins that reduce your costs are cute, but also just not very good. Run more lands instead-or at least landcyclers, or ZNR spell-lands like Khalni Ambush or Glass-Pool Mimic or Ondu Inversion. Mana screw kills. - Krosan Verge fetches Triomes. - Catastrophe is a good sweeper for this deck because, in addition to equalizing the board when you're behind, it can also decisively slam the door on the game if you're ahead.
I used to run The Ur-Dragon for like two years (i took it apart a few months ago i just got bored with it). That's pretty much the list I would run nowadays, although I wouldn't play Sylvia Brightspear personally. Instead, I personally prefer Berserker's Onslaught. It's two more mana, but in a deck that ramps this hard its not difficult to get to five (that's the sweet spot anyways), and it also makes your non-dragons into double strikers. I also enjoy running a few key changelings, mostly Taurean Mauler, Morophon the Boundless, and Mirror Entity. a two-mana Taurean Mauler is just fantastic, it accrues so much value. Mirror Entity helps make all your creatures dragons for effects like Scourge of Valkas or any of your good tribal synergies like Ojutai or Dromoka or Kolaghan for five mana. Morophon also helps because, while i agree with cutting fist of suns, he makes all your 7+ mana dragons five mana dragons and thats huge, while also including the Ur-Dragon itself, all for six mana (at the most expensive). EDIT: also I know some of these are a bit expensive, especially Morophon, but nowhere near as expensive as Urza's Incubator or Kindred Discovery.
The Morophon in the 99 is a really great idea, especially for getting the Ur Dragon themselves out. Are there any other big multi color dragons you would recommend to get more value put of Morophon's discount? I am curious
@@DarkX64a lot of the dragons from the tarkir block are great. As far as other multi colour i skew toward the jund shard mostly. Karthus and others are more attuned to the deck with a smattering of white and blue pips but only the very best skylizards from that part of the pie. I look at the deck as jund with a slpash of azorious.

Deathbringer Regent - I never really liked this dragon to begin with. Glad to know there's another dragon out there that gives double strike!
When this deck came out a few years ago, I got it because EDH was traditionally Dragons back in the day. Knowing how much this deck is now to buy???? Holy Moly!!!
I played this deck so much a few years ago when I was part of a consistent commander group that I was able to list all the Dragons in the deck from best to worst. It was such a fun deck to play. I actually did play both Partner cards because while the Bright flame itself inst amazing it does let you go find Bright-spear. I know the argument is just play a tutor instead but on a budget having a tutor on a 3/4 Dragon then it gets DS was pretty great. Also might surprise you what Dragon I considered to be #1. Hint it had Haste.
I urge EVERYONE who watched this to make SURE the deck has Fist of Suns and Morophon the Boundless. I cannot stress enough the value these 2 cards add separately, but together they literally combo and make all of your dragons free. If you have Ramos dragon engine out you have such a nasty combination of synergies
yeah im sorry but that just isnt worth a slot. most of ur dragons are just as easy if not easier to cast on their own (about 75% are easier to cast on their own.) so you are taking a turn to play a card that does nothing most of the time.
Love your content and Ur Dragon was the first EDH deck I ever built. I have 4 dragon tribal EDH decks now and, trust me, taking out Sarkhan is a huge mistake. That card is 3 mana for either ramp or card selection plus protecting him late game when you have a board of dragons is easy.
Two of my favorite cards to add to this deck are brood mother dragon and traverse the outlands. Anything really that let's you do stuff on other people's turn are fantastic because that's 75% of the game if you're playing with a full group. Broodmother dragon with a dragon tempest or scourge of valkas on the field is ridiculous. And then traverse the outlands, every time you play this for 5 mana you're basically getting 6 lands or more onto the battlefield. I play it quite regularly with a dragon like ancient brass dragon and the dragon crucible on the field, like oh there's a 10 power dragon let me play all the basic lands from my deck. Then when there's no lands left in your deck, cards like lurking predators become even more over powered.
I took urzas incubator out of mine in favour of 2 drop rox and green tutors for fixing my very colour intensive urdragon build. I also play 38 lands including a few fetches and all the og duals that have mountain.
11:10 - I use 37 lands and 16 mana accelerators in my Ur-Dragon list. I started with 39 lands, but when playing I realized that ramp is more important than lands in this deck (topdecking a land is terrible after a boardwipe). You could consider Nature's Lore, Fellwar Stone, Chromatic Lantern and Faeburrow Elder (cool synergy with Murmuring Bosk). Good fixing/ramp makes the deck more enjoyable. All in all, great evaluation!
I would honestly swap out a Skyshroud Claim for a Demonic Tutor. With as few basic lands in the deck as there are, you could easily find yourself with a dead card in hand since that one specifically searches for forests. Demonic Tutor, on the other hand, searches for whatever you may need at the time, be it creature, enchantment, etc. You could search for the Morophon or Scion of the Ur-Dragon. You could find a mana rock or any of the other land searcherers, or just find a card that answers whatever your opponents have on the board.
I just came upon this video as I'm getting ideas for a dragon deck....Skyshroud Claim doesn't just fetch out basics. It tutors for any Forest cards, which include the Triomes (with the type forest) and also some pain lands, such as Stomping Ground. Nevertheless, Demonic Tutor is good in this deck too.
Yes it’s -1/-1 to all creatures but you’re playing with 5/5s and 6/6s in the sky... who cares 🤷🏻♂️ it’s an Urza’s Incubator for 1 less mana and is less than $2
Even better. The -1/-1 has a great political value in that it makes the dragons "feel weaker" to your opponents. I've found it slows how fast newer opponents react to the dragon loadout
@@derekwalter4238 He replaces incubator due to the price of the card in paper. This is an Uber budget replacement that’s downside isn’t really all that bad in comparison. Not saying it’s the perfect card but if you don’t have an extra $30 laying around it’s a no brainer
I do see your point with Fist of Suns, but something great about it especially for casting The Ur-Dragon is that it ignores the commander tax. Also, if you are running Morophon, the Boundless, that Fist of Suns is fantastic for the deck, because it makes all of your dragons free to cast :3 It's for this reason that I also run Jodah, Archmage Eternal in my deck :)
I play an Ur-Dragon token decks and use Conspiracy and Arcane Adaptation to turn them into dragons, draws a brazillion cards and put permanents in play. Good times.
Great video! I'd like to plug Magmaquake as a mostly better boardwipe than Earthquake, Living Death as a boardwipe/mass reanimate spell, and Decimate as an efficient removal spell. As far as creatures I'd recommend Nesting Dragon and Dragon Broodmother as single cards that make dragon armies by themselves. Taurean Mauler is great at 2 mana. Hellkite Tyrant is also a must-include if you can afford it. I'd cut Intet and Ramos to make room.
Surprised that Merciless Eviction was added but not Winds of Abandon. Either spot removal or asymmetrical board wipe is nice to push your own dragons through.
Sarkhan dragon soul is great for an ur dragon deck it has the same ultimate as sarkhan unbroken but you can get to it faster I have both in my Ur-dragon deck the only downside it it’s expensive but if you can get one defiantly put it in
Fist of Suns does a lot more than you give it credit for. Several dragons have double mana pips in their costs; if you have access to WUBRG but not double of any of them, Fists helps ease their mana cost and make them castable when you otherwise couldn't. And you're also undervaluing its ability to cast the commander.
I put all 10 bounce lands in mine but most of my ramp is "do a cool effect and put a land into play" with a generous amount of card draw so its rare I cant play a land from hand. Cool video, good suggestions. 38 lands seems like a good number to aim for.
I personally find Call to the Kindred to be great in Tribal decks that have blue. It allows you to cheat cards into play, and with big, expensive creatures, that's just great.
It works better when you have a more resilient commander to put it on. If Silumgar, the Drifting Death were at the helm, I'd be all for it. Or of it were something like Bruna Angels, Tuvasa Merfolk, or Saint Traft Spirits. In this deck, though, it's slower, more fragile, and less reliable than green alternatives like Descendant's Path, Oath of Druids, Selective Adaptation, See the Unwritten, and Summoning Trap. It is good if you can put it on a hexproof dragon. But there aren't that many of those.
I actually designed my Ur dragon deck for the most part to cheat mana costs and play my dragons for free. I actually took out all the mana reducing affects that only work on dragons like those two goblins.
I just got a zada deck, and I'm having a really hard time balancing it. It could be a fun challenge for you to try to get the most budget possible since it's already a cheap deck.

Fist of Suns makes all ultimatums easier easier to cast too, leaving more mana to shove into crucible of the spirit dragon. Plus, if you lose the shaman, it is good to have that back up.
I really feel like the budget aspect of "Upping" the Average is in opposition to the feel of the rest of the idea of making a deck "better" as well as what the name would suggest. Also just in general 5 color decks are often very expensive so it seems odd, personally, to worry about lowering the costs.
I think it's not as contradictory as you imply. Upping the average is for exactly that. Improving the average deck. If more people play the deck because it's more easily accessed then more people will be able to improve it over time, thus eventually leading to a higher quality deck down the line. Also there's often time cases where just because a card is more expensive, doesn't mean that there isn't a generally equivalent budget option. I come from yugioh where that is literally just never the case. In EDH with such a large card pool, it's often a simple fact that the corner cases that a more "optimal" option are only marginally better than its alternative, and thus the actual quality of the deck isn't brought down that much, and is often offset anyway by other improvements made to the deck. Example: I swap a card that draws 5 for a card that draws 4, that's a suboptimal option, but in the grand scheme not a huge difference. I also swap a card that ramps on turn 3 for a card that ramps on turn 2. that's a pretty significant difference in most decks. The net change is still positive, and I think that's more to the point than each individual improvement. And the overall strength of the deck combined with lower budget bringing more people to build the deck, increases the strength of the average deck.
If you pull up a commander on EDHREC.com, near the stats it gives you the option to generate an average decklist based on how many people play certain cards in that deck, according to lists found all over online.
sarkhan unbroken didn't do anything for me. i mean, he already tells you, he is not broken :D because of his ultimate, you put a target on your head and if you are able to use his ultimate, you are already so far ahead. sarkhan the mad and the masterless did way more in my deck.
I think an interesting card would be crashing draw bring. I know you mention other sources of haste but with my limited play with this card people over look it until you are giving haste to a massive beater that they thought that they had a turn to deal with. other upsides is that is is cheep mana and cost wise and is a good early turn play as a 0/4 can be a good blocker against early chip in damage. the only down side is it is a defending wall and not a dragon but oh well.

Some good stuff here, but you didn't mention Bower Passage or include it in the 99. For that I can rate this no higher than a 2/10. Also Heartless Summoning is arguably better that Urza's in this deck. Cheaper to get out, and the downside will not matter to your dragons in the majority of cases.

Sorry but I don't get why you remove Deathbringer Regent to add Merciless Eviction. Both are wraths but the Regent is much more on theme. However, I'd like to see an updated version of this video. We had so many dragons recently. Personally I include a Rite of Replication to target Scourge of Valkas or Terror of the Peaks. Other combo options are Wrathful Red Dragon (Star of Extinction, Blasphemous Act) or Astral Dragon (Cursed Mirror).

Uhh.. Meh.. ^^ wondering how exactly a commander like that is ever going to hit the board without a TON of fast mana or as part of the 99 in a Kaalia deck. Imo, if you want to build a budget deck (which can absolutely work and even be fun in its own right), start by not swapping out some cards from a random list, but by picking a commander that can actually WORK within your budget (a commander that doenst require a ton of fast mana sources is always a good start :D)
I get taking out the 2 rocks but I would rather put in draw spells something cheap like slight of hand nothing is worse than looking for answers and all you get is lands because you're running 38 lands
don't play sarkhan unbronken. he is so painfully bad. it is a like a 4 mana draw 1 you can only use with 5 lands or a 5 mana 4/4 dragon with no ability and the ult is at least 5 activations. if you are allowed to keep him this long, you are already winning the game. any 6 mana dragon is better. if you want to play a real sarkhan, play the mad or the masterless

Man, that Game Knights Modern Horizon showcase with Avatar tribal and Morophon was really neat. And yeah, Fist of Suns is an auto include on that.

I put all 10 bounce lands in mine but most of my ramp is "do a cool effect and put a land into play" with a generous amount of card draw so its rare I cant play a land from hand.

I personally find Call to the Kindred to be great in Tribal decks that have blue. It allows you to cheat cards into play, and with big, expensive creatures, that's just great.
That seems pretty good when it works, but it also looks fragile.
It works better when you have a more resilient commander to put it on. If Silumgar, the Drifting Death were at the helm, I'd be all for it. Or of it were something like Bruna Angels, Tuvasa Merfolk, or Saint Traft Spirits. In this deck, though, it's slower, more fragile, and less reliable than green alternatives like Descendant's Path, Oath of Druids, Selective Adaptation, See the Unwritten, and Summoning Trap.
It is good if you can put it on a hexproof dragon. But there aren't that many of those.

I actually designed my Ur dragon deck for the most part to cheat mana costs and play my dragons for free. I actually took out all the mana reducing affects that only work on dragons like those two goblins.

Fist of Suns makes all ultimatums easier easier to cast too, leaving more mana to shove into crucible of the spirit dragon. Plus, if you lose the shaman, it is good to have that back up.
Fist of the Suns and Morphon makes all dragons free to cast
I run Oath of Druids in my Ur-Dragon deck. Its super rude, because I just get lots of free dragons when others are playing dorks.
I still prefer Scion of the Ur-Dragon over The Ur-Dragon itself, but this was a good Upping the Average. I may add Sylvia to my deck.
Add a Dockise Extorsionist and a Shalai Voice of Angel.
I really feel like the budget aspect of "Upping" the Average is in opposition to the feel of the rest of the idea of making a deck "better" as well as what the name would suggest. Also just in general 5 color decks are often very expensive so it seems odd, personally, to worry about lowering the costs.
I think it's not as contradictory as you imply. Upping the average is for exactly that. Improving the average deck. If more people play the deck because it's more easily accessed then more people will be able to improve it over time, thus eventually leading to a higher quality deck down the line. Also there's often time cases where just because a card is more expensive, doesn't mean that there isn't a generally equivalent budget option. I come from yugioh where that is literally just never the case. In EDH with such a large card pool, it's often a simple fact that the corner cases that a more "optimal" option are only marginally better than its alternative, and thus the actual quality of the deck isn't brought down that much, and is often offset anyway by other improvements made to the deck.
Example: I swap a card that draws 5 for a card that draws 4, that's a suboptimal option, but in the grand scheme not a huge difference. I also swap a card that ramps on turn 3 for a card that ramps on turn 2. that's a pretty significant difference in most decks. The net change is still positive, and I think that's more to the point than each individual improvement. And the overall strength of the deck combined with lower budget bringing more people to build the deck, increases the strength of the average deck.

So where is he getting these deck lists from? Is he making them up or just improving on someone else's?
If you pull up a commander on EDHREC.com, near the stats it gives you the option to generate an average decklist based on how many people play certain cards in that deck, according to lists found all over online.

sarkhan unbroken didn't do anything for me. i mean, he already tells you, he is not broken :D
because of his ultimate, you put a target on your head and if you are able to use his ultimate, you are already so far ahead. sarkhan the mad and the masterless did way more in my deck.
I think an interesting card would be crashing draw bring. I know you mention other sources of haste but with my limited play with this card people over look it until you are giving haste to a massive beater that they thought that they had a turn to deal with. other upsides is that is is cheep mana and cost wise and is a good early turn play as a 0/4 can be a good blocker against early chip in damage. the only down side is it is a defending wall and not a dragon but oh well.

Some good stuff here, but you didn't mention Bower Passage or include it in the 99. For that I can rate this no higher than a 2/10.
Also Heartless Summoning is arguably better that Urza's in this deck. Cheaper to get out, and the downside will not matter to your dragons in the majority of cases.

Sorry but I don't get why you remove Deathbringer Regent to add Merciless Eviction. Both are wraths but the Regent is much more on theme. However, I'd like to see an updated version of this video. We had so many dragons recently.
Personally I include a Rite of Replication to target Scourge of Valkas or Terror of the Peaks. Other combo options are Wrathful Red Dragon (Star of Extinction, Blasphemous Act) or Astral Dragon (Cursed Mirror).

Uhh.. Meh.. ^^ wondering how exactly a commander like that is ever going to hit the board without a TON of fast mana or as part of the 99 in a Kaalia deck. Imo, if you want to build a budget deck (which can absolutely work and even be fun in its own right), start by not swapping out some cards from a random list, but by picking a commander that can actually WORK within your budget (a commander that doenst require a ton of fast mana sources is always a good start :D)
or find more casual players to face with ur dragon
I get taking out the 2 rocks but I would rather put in draw spells something cheap like slight of hand nothing is worse than looking for answers and all you get is lands because you're running 38 lands
I disagree with cutting that Sarkhan. He is nuts.
don't play sarkhan unbronken. he is so painfully bad. it is a like a 4 mana draw 1 you can only use with 5 lands or a 5 mana 4/4 dragon with no ability and the ult is at least 5 activations. if you are allowed to keep him this long, you are already winning the game. any 6 mana dragon is better. if you want to play a real sarkhan, play the mad or the masterless
