    In episode 2 of the Green Kitchen, food historian and critic Professor Pushpesh Pant and CSE's Vibha Varshney discuss a rice and legume combination from West Bengal.
    Moong dal or Vigna radiata is native to India and a small grained variety is roasted and used to prepare a very simple dal with just a little ginger and some basic spices. This is enjoyed with a small grained fragrant rice variety known as Gobindbhog.

    While in Lucknow, I craved frenzily for the Gobindobhog Chaal such that I ordered it for almost several times high er price than the one we find in my Bangla, same goes for our Sona Mug Dala md our Dark coloured, textured Cow Ghee.

    Bengali poor souls actually didn't eat dal so often..
    Dal is something that most village farmers need to buy with hard cash.
    Fish is readily available in ponds ( bengali people like fresh water fish like rohu/katla/ bata/puti/tyangra/prawn/crab etc) .. And you don't need to buy them.
    Hence for poor people, mach bhat is a cost effective option even few decades back.

    If u eat the rice with plain ghee , alu siddo and green chilly you could smell the fragrance quite distinctly. Non veg person can also enjoy it with boiled egg and fried fish .We have some farm land for paddy cultivation within which we dedicate some land for producing this rice (Gobindo vog ). Glad to see people giving it recognition. Thanks to prof Panth and Down to earth.

    Respected Madam and Sir, Sorry to say that actual Sona Moong Dal are not grown now-a-days in India especially or rather in West Bengal. These grains of Sona Moong Dal were grown in the district of Nadia in the then West Bengal unfortunately after partition in the year of 1947 that part of the district of Nadia has been gone or merged in the East Pakistan now which is called Bangladesh. Therefore actual Sona Moong Dal has been lost from our life as well as from our taste. In the market of West Bengal a small grain of normal Moong Dal are being sold which are not the actual Sona Moong Dal.

    This combination makes excellent Kichudi.
    Especially Bhoger Kichudi, it’s a simple preparation. Add stir fried vegetables like cauliflower , Potatoes, peas and dash of turmeric, salt and ghee.
    Offer it to Maa Durga, Maa Laxmi , Maa Kali and enjoy the flavours during this entire month. Awesome

    Thank you for clearing the myth that Bengal isn't all about fish and non veg. It clearly isn't! For the uninitiated, Bengals vegetarian platter is massive, there's a saying in Bengal you have everything from the root to the leaves and bud.

    Growing up in Bengal it was Gobindo bhog rice, even for us north indians! Dont find it easily in Delhi now...

    Moong dal in bengali kitchens is cooked without onion or garlic,dry roast the Moog daal,wash it ,keep aside,for tempering one can heat the oil and add bay leaves,dry Red chilli, whole cumin seeds,add moog daal toss it for 2/3 minutes add warm water,cook until the daal reaches the desired softness, garnish with ghee done.

    It's almost impossible to get Govinda bhog rice in other parts of India. Sona mug is because of its colour and sonar bangla is for the fertile land of Bengal

    This got weird quickly. I’ve never understood how fellow Indians/South Asians can treat people from 1-2 states away as if they’re all aliens. I hoped this video would give greater context to the food I grew up eating but I just feel exotifed. (As usual… why did I expect better?)
