As a kid in the late 60’s and early 70’s my Great grandmother and grandmother used to take me to the transportation museum when it was at Wasena park and I was always drawn to the 611. They would say it would never run again.i would like to think that the 1218 and the 2156 would run again.
I am not hating nor not wanting 1218 to steam again but when 1218 was put back together it was just put the exterior so the interior parts are missing and will have to be made new which is expensive. Maybe in a few years it can happen but as of now no

Great Video. I love the Class A. My favorite N&W Locomotive. Right now Lionel is making the Class A featuring 1212 & 1218 in their lionmaster series.
I love the Erie hooter whistle for 1218, gotta be one of my favorites. Really does sound like she's working hard in that acceleration.

Once again another great video I loved the ending were all three of the famous three are together with the sound of an N&W hooter in the background. I would love to see 1218 return to steam again but I'm grateful that 611 has returned and who knows what the future has for 1218 maybe she might come since UP is restoring a Big Boy and WMSR is restoring a C&O Mallet only time will tell. I hope you will do a video like this of 611.
1309 will probably never be finished parts stolen and they are sorta running low on funds

I remember being little and binge watching these documentaries wondering if I'd ever get these. Today, I have the 611, 4501, 630, 1218 and many other K&L Trainz engines in my TRS19 collection!

Great video. Maybe someday the 1218 will be fired up once more and run with the 611. It would take a lot of time and money, but maybe it would work out. If it is too expensive for passenger trains then they can put it back in freight service. After all it is what she was designed for. I was also wondering if 2156 could be repaired and fired up. But this has a less likely chance of happening because 2156 was never fired up since it was originally taken out of service when Norfolk and Western gave up steam. 2156 is in less better condition then the 1218. It would be nice to have 1218 running again since the only malllet types that are running are u.p. 3985 and the 4014 which is being fixed up. (Sorry if I forgot any others.) It would be nice to see if the 1218 will ever run again. I dreamed of seeing the old video of the nkp 765, the N&W 611 and the N&W 1218 triple heading and then comparing it to a modern video of the three triple heading. If a "Fire up 1218" program ever comes up Im sure a lot of us are going to support it.🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
UP 3985 has been retired by the railroad, Big Boy 4014 is now its full time replacement. From what Mr. Dickens has said, 3985 was discovered to be in really rough shape back in 2011. Concerns about the engine's future were part of the reason 4014 was reacquired and restored. Then, when they examined 3985 for a potential overhaul, they found the cost to repair it would be even higher than the 4014's entire restoration. Unfortunate, but at least we now have an operational Big Boy to still enjoy.

1218 may be a proud display and a symbol to Norfolk Southern‘s program and to the pinnacle of steam but she deserves to run again and there is a way to get her going again but all it’s gonna take as a lot negotiation and bringing it forward to the one group that could do the job
Seeing that NS barely wants anything to do with the 611, and they paid to restore it, I highly doubt they'll be any more receptive of the 1218.
@@KLTrainz well I don’t mean Norfolk Southern considering how low they sunk since the accident in Ohio and because of how stupid management has handled things. But I know for sure that there are many in the museum that work on 611 would also love nothing more than to see 1218 run again in many people including enthusiasts and preservationists that are followed up on 1218 since her days in the program want the same thing. And after doing a lot of research there’s only one group around that can guarantee 1218‘s resurrection to steam. But it involves quite a journey to the workshop that can do it.
Back in 2017 I went to Roanoke to see 611. During the tip I talked to one of the steam program employees, he claimed that there long term goal was to rase the money to build an engine house for 611, 1218, and 2156 when it was on loan to the museum. He then said that once that was complete they will start to rase money to restore 1218.
These plans most likely fell apart when all of the restrictions on excursions on class one railroads occurred, and 611 was restricted to running only on tourist lines. If what he told me was true, that does show that 1218 operating again was at least considered.
A truly beautiful looking model. I must ask though, how on EARTH do you get ahold of such fantastic famous narrators?!
Research, having a good reputation, and mostly paying what they ask. It isn't cheap to hire a pro cable network voice like Bill Ratner or Dave Drui from Pentrex like I did on the 614 video. But I am willing to pay what it takes to get what I want for my videos! And that goes a long way!

All the steamers that participated in the Southern/Norfolk Southern Steam Excursion Program are: Southern Railway 154, 385, 401, 630, 722, and 4501; Norfolk & Western 611 and 1218; Savannah & Atlantic 750; Nickel Plate 765 and 587; Canadian National 5288; Canadian Pacific 2839; Texas & Pacific 610; Chesapeake & Ohio 2716; U.S. Army Transportation Corps 610; Frisco 1522; Atlanta and West Point 290; Louisville & Nashville 152; and London Northeastern Railway 4472 Flying Scotsman during her North American Tour.
CN 5288 and Southern 154, 385 and 401 were never in the steam program....you missed Southern 6910, Miss 77, and CP 1238

I did some research (from the train orders discussion board) this is the list of the 20 steam locomotives that were in the original steam program southern 4501 savannah & Atlanta 750 southern 630 London and north eastern railway 4472 (the flying Scotsman) southern 722 southern 6910 Mississippian 77 southern pacific 4449 (if it's right I'm not sure) Texas & pacific 610 Canadian pacific 2839 Canadian pacific (or Virginia central) 1238 Chesapeake and Ohio 2716 nickel plate road 765 Norfolk and western 611 Norfolk and western 1218 Louisville and Nashville 152 nickel plate road 587 Atlanta and west point 290 Frisco 1522 and u.s army/Tennessee valley 610 I've really became interested in the original steam program I think I like the Varity that was used during the 28 years I do wish some other engines had joined the program a few I've imaged are Chesapeake and ohio 614 and ethier one or all four of the reading t-1 northern's 2100 2101 2102 and 2124 (although 2124 is my favorite one out of the four) I know we can't change the past but that's just hit me in my imagination
154 sat in Chilhowee park in Knoxville, TN until August 2008. It would be quite a trick for it to have been in the program when it was sidelined for over 50 years!

Where did you get the train shed for the VMT? Is it on the DLS? There is a N&W freight station on the DLS and the Roanoke N&W passenger station. And fishlipsatwork made a blank DEM map of Lynchburg-Roanoke-Narrows. And gfisher the Loops route in NC that the 611 will be on April 10 to Asheville. I'm extending it to Asheville and Spencer using my own DEM.

I truly hope that someone with a deep passion for steam "and really deep pockets" will rebuild N&W 1218 to operation condition.

The 1218 sits at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke VA the 611 is now at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer NC.

Does anyone know if 1218 or 3985 was more powerful? I know the Class A and the Challenger are of a pretty close size (though the latter is slightly larger), and both were built for fast freight or troop trains.
1218 running first since 1955 is the same age as the boomers who were born in 1955 they were between the ages of 21 and 39 years old. Baby Boomers were in their 20’s and 30’s when they began restoring these steam locomotives in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
