🕺🏻ABOUT DJ: DJ is a locomotive engineer for CSX Railroad since 1999. He has built dozens of layouts, gave presentations for model railroaders, is a UA-camr, licensed drone pilot, and a great father. - Наука та технологія
What a great idea! Cutting the building in half and creating a much larger building. This is definitely something I will put to use.
So much more depth than a flat.
I can see that the way you did the building gives more depth to the scene than using a flat.
Great video...your enthusiasm for trains and for modeling is absolutely infectious!
The maestro continues to empress
Lol.
Magical! You are so clear in your explanation that it encourages me to do more in the hobby. I like how you adapt things to fit your style and a reasonable budget. I also appreciate you announcing the commercial breaks. I hope others take notice. Thank you again DJ.
That was awesome!!!!!👊🏻 Stay Safe & God Bless!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
You always inspire me with your ideas 💡 👍
Awesome! Thank you!
It’s pretty amazing how you took a basic structure and created an awesome building. Weathered, modern windows and details that made this structure look like it was store bought. Great video and I look forward to seeing more.
Thank you so much 😀
Now that's absolutely great work! It's really amazing how you can kit-bash structures into practically whatever will fit your layout. Nice job, and thanks for all the terrific tutorials for all of us rail fans.👍
Thanks a lot!
Great kitbash video DJ! You made me want to attack my unfinished structures and start weathering!
Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Cheers, my friend!!
👍😍 Awesome model building and building techniques on how to build it DJ
Glad you like it!
Looks great, DJ! Great tips! One for you. When you do your weathering, work more “down the slope/grain” of the roof to help take your (really cool) look to an even more realistic level.
Interesting modeling project, DJ . . . nice solutions to the often oversized and otherwise out-of-scale offerings from manufacturers, too. Masking so as to prevent bleed-through on some of the coarser materials is a hit-and-miss proposition; sometimes an initial coat of clear gloss or clear flat after applying the masking tape helps reduce the problem. Noticed also that some of the plastics absolutely require a primer coat - - - automotive adhesion promoters (Dupli-color, Bulldog, etc.) are designed specifically for plastics and allow paints to adhere well to styrene, ABS, Delrin (locomotive handrails and those Micro-Trains trucks), vinyl and chrome.
loved watching this one... and giggled when you brought up about someone saying they would mess things up, being what I said in your last video.. lol
YOU CAN DO IT!!!! YOU MUST TRY!!! Lol. (This is my motivational speech for you today, lol)
Nice work. Enjoyed this video and idea. Keep'm coming Dude.
More to come!
Really cool structure.
Awesome! I've tried masking stuff myself. I like the yellow 3M automotive tape, the push it down really hard with you fingernail, or the back end of your blade handle.
I rushed it with green painters tape and got over confident, lol.
Nice job. Hey I got the same holder for my plastic cement. Don’t wanna spill (or breathe) that stuff!
Nice scratched build structure DJ.👍. Gives me ideas of what to do with all my scrap building pieces that I’ve accumulated over the years, your vids are very informative, take care bud.👋😎🛤🚂
Glad to help
Very nice! Thanks for sharing DJ.
Glad to make these!
Looks great DJ!
Thanks!
Look great. Nice work. 👍
Thanks 👍
Great ideas, looks great and thanks.
You are so welcome!
scratchbuilding is creative and makes unique structures, good job
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi ya DJ. That came out great. Your simple to understand tutorials are always a pleasure to watch. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Your so talented.
((blushes))
Great kitbash, inspiring!
Thanks so much!
That's a pretty awesome job!
The problem that happens to me is I have this uncontrollable urge to create things as if they were newly built/restored. The few things I have, it has this earie feel to because of this. My wife suggested I recreate some scenes from "The Twilight Zone" on my layout since the feeling is already there. lol
I really struggle with making things nice, so I weather the heck out of them to cover blemishes.
@@djstrains I like seeing your work and what you do. The weathering really does add that touch of realism.
And you can just take the Bob Ross approach. There are no mistakes, just happy accidents. :)
great job ! that old Heljan/concor kit is a good start for kitbashing although the kit is getting hard to find. Heljan has stopped making them. Maybe Walthers will continue stocking them. so if you find them buy ! anyway nice video ! I would love seeing you making a video, using some inexpensive kit, to kit bash a steel mill or a furnace. thanks ! and have a nice sunday !
I have some ideas for future video and a steel mill scene!
@@djstrains 😳great !!!
Great job, DJ! I’m prepping to model a N Scale switching layout in the mid 1920s. Most of these buildings will be new during my time period. It’ll be really interesting to model a fairly new city in that era. Gonna be fun! Keep up your greatest work and stay safe out there on the rails.
Thanks. Only question I have is that color film was after many buildings were built, so what color were they? I have a favorite old pic. Its black and white, so I never found out what the prototype color was.
@@djstrains that’s part of the beauty of modeling: we get to use our imaginations! I’m so looking forward to getting started. I’m sure the buildings will be “tastefully” adorned. 😀
Keep up the great work and stay safe out there in the prototype world!
Do you ever add interiors?
Not often, but may do in future for close up buildings. Great idea.
👍
I am enjoying the tutorials. Lots of information to utilize, I do have a question. What materials could I use for buildings that are specific to an area? I am wanting to build a model train layout that has something that is unique from most of the places I have lived. Is there a kit that I could use to make the buildings?
I find that most kits are just a "starting point" but need a lot of additional materials to make a replica of a prototype.
I love what you did. But I model in O scale and it is frustrating how few affordable building kits are available that can be kitbashed, unless you use Plasticville structures. Any suggesstions?
Yes. Please be patient, it will be worth it, but I cant do a video until later this year. But like I said, it will be worth it!!
Nice work DJ .. those old Heljan kits are too european -- chopping up the windows fixes that.. I think I would have removed those sky lights completely .. great job
I was up in the air on that decision. (drone pun not intended)
Im guessing theres probably a ton of European influence in the pre1950 brick buildings that still dot the Mon and Ohio valleys.
