This video is all about remembering a few sentances to help you get the derivatives correct. Remember that the mnemonics out there in other reviews are not at all related to the individual structures (Crest, Tube, Surface, etc.) so it's pretty challenging to learn these associations unless you use more purposeful mnemonics. To summarize what you should remember: "you CLEAN the surface with SOAP" "a Tube of NEASPOREN" "SPAMS MOTEL with Crest toothpaste" "CLEAR TV with Malcolm in the Middle on it"
@Mirette Atnas Hi, you're right! Both follicular cells and C cells (parafollicular) are derived from endoderm (branchial Pouches). FA'2019 has it written on p.322, p.599, and p. 607. The problem is that this is a relatively RECENT discovery. If you look up most of the current literature it will (incorrectly) say that it is neural crest.
For anyone studying this last minute, something that helps me is just memorizing overarching ideas that can get me points. It's not all encompassing, but could be helpful! Surface ectoderm - Things that are more on the surface Neural tube - Anything CNS related Neural crest - Anything PNS related or act like neural cells outside of the CNS. Mesoderm and Endoderm are basically presented similarly in the video already :) Good luck! And thanks again, Dirty!
Anterior Pituitary (AP at end of soAP) = Surface ectoderm. “And then the other one, is the other one” -goljan. Posterior pituitary = Neural tube. High yield.
Hey! Thanks so much for all your work and videos. Has helped me a lot get a base knowledge before I dive into the weeds. Just wanted to give you a heads up.. UWorld has an update that Parafollicular C cells are now classified as Endoderm!
No the rest of the thyroid is endoderm (1st and 2nd pharyngeal pouches) bc it starts in the oropharynx and descends in the thyroglossal duct… the parafollicular cells ARE NEURAL CREST (4th pouch)
1 high yield exception to this is that SPLEEN is an mesodermal derivative and not endodermal[whereas all the other abdominal organs are endodermal derivatives ]
Mesodermal abnormalities already have a name, VACTERL/VACTREL Syndrome. Just saying. Great videos, by the way. Your channel is my go-to for anything I find too difficult to understand or memorize. Keep up the excellent work!
For neural crest, a better mnemonic is MASS PASTE (hotels/motels keep alot of free toothpaste so mass paste) M- melanocytes, myenteric plexus A- adrenal medulla S- Schwann cells S- skull bones P- pia and arachnoid matter, PNS AS- aorticopulmonary septum T- thyroid c cells E- endocardial cushions
This video is super helpful, I struggled with this in embryology, and trying to really get the hang of this for neuro. you have given me hope. Thank you
Also, after seeing that mnemonic. A suggestion I have is you could possibly add "after eating a MOTEL'S SPAM, you need to brush with 'Crest' toothpaste."
Another idea maybe for people who are not familiar with Neasporen (NASPOREN) you can also reorganize it into the word Persona which might be more familiar, and so the mnemonic I came up with is "There is a childish PERSONA in the TUBE" thinking about a kid in a water slide, hope that helps
My anatomy textbook states that the bones of the viscerocranium develop from ectoderm,is it true? I thought the skeletal system was mesodermal in origin.Sorry if it's a stupid question,I'm just a beginner

@DirtyUSMLE please upload a video for pharyngeal pouches

High yield mesoderm: SPLEEN
UW loves spleen :D
lmao this exact question made me search for embryonic mnemonic xD
@@tanweerb1800 Literally why I'm here now too
😂😂 it's look spleen bring all here
Yes, this one comes up again and again and again.
Anterior Pituitary (AP at end of soAP) = Surface ectoderm. “And then the other one, is the other one” -goljan. Posterior pituitary = Neural tube. High yield.
Good to know the odd ball too. Spleen is from mesoderm even tho it's with the GI/viscera.

parafolicullar cell is a former neural crest but is part of endoderm now
fourth pharyngeal pouch
@@imnate5860 wasup where you been
@@imnate5860 yes i am on telegram. I just got application confirmation
@@davidlam6702 congrats , Im waiting for it too,im going for jan, telegram id ?

10/10 high yield bro. It'd be awesome if you could do one about cranial nerves and their pathways! Great work, and I look forward to your next vid :)
1 high yield exception to this is that SPLEEN is an mesodermal derivative and not endodermal[whereas all the other abdominal organs are endodermal derivatives ]
UPDATE: Thyroid C cells are now considered an Endoderm derivative (according to UW)
Mesodermal abnormalities already have a name, VACTERL/VACTREL Syndrome. Just saying.
Great videos, by the way. Your channel is my go-to for anything I find too difficult to understand or memorize. Keep up the excellent work!
Wow, absolutely wow. You sir, are a genius!
CLEAN SOAP is a lifesaver great video!
For neural crest, a better mnemonic is MASS PASTE (hotels/motels keep alot of free toothpaste so mass paste)
M- melanocytes, myenteric plexus
A- adrenal medulla
S- Schwann cells
S- skull bones
P- pia and arachnoid matter, PNS
AS- aorticopulmonary septum
T- thyroid c cells
E- endocardial cushions
Thyroid C cells arise from endoderm not Neural crest cells. But you are life saver already
thank you for existing
This video is super helpful, I struggled with this in embryology, and trying to really get the hang of this for neuro. you have given me hope. Thank you
Intelligence and class showed by the host... thankyou very much
Thank you so much 👍😊 I love your mnemonics a lot and hope to see a video about pharyngeal arches and pouches
You're a freaking lifesaver dude
Abnormality in mesoderm formation - > VACTERL
This is helpful. Thank you.
The rest of the thyroid is endoderm (1st and 2nd pharyngeal pouches) bc it starts in the oropharynx and descends in the thyroglossal duct.
This is good very help me for study
My guy, says Crest tooth paste and then puts an image of Colgate. Legend!
Also, after seeing that mnemonic. A suggestion I have is you could possibly add "after eating a MOTEL'S SPAM, you need to brush with 'Crest' toothpaste."
What happened to your pharyngeal arch video? That thing was gold. Would like to send it to some year 1's now.
I cant find it either. but i wrote the poem in FA when i first saw it if you want it

How about bones and connective tissue? Don't they come from the mesoderm too?
This is a bit beyond the scope of the MCAT (what I'm studying for right now), but I'm sure I'll be back.
Mnemonic for neural tube derivates:
CNS of New PERSON
Helped me to remember.
Simply Awesome Sir
Very helpful thanks a lot
THAK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH
amazing video man!
You are awesome.thankyou
Lil correction parafollicular c cells is of EN
DODERMAL origin
I would prefer VACTERL association mnemonic instead of CLEAR TV , excellent lectures
great video! spleen is mesoderm!
Can u make video on hypothesis error confidence interval p value... it will really help
Usmle Goal pleaseeee
100 /10 bro..
Thank you so much ! this video really helped me :)
another mnemonic:-
CLEAN Surface MESS
C: cornea
L: lens
E: ear
A: ant. pit (rathke pouch)
n: nose
Surface Ectoderm
M: Mammary
E: Episdermis
S: salivary
S: sweat
crest toothpaste but you put a picture of colgate toothpaste, great video though
LOL you're right, wow the power of brand recognition
I came here to say this hahahaha
Super helpful
osmosis has a funny visual mnemonic for the derivates
THANKS!
Hey! I am studying hair you should have went into the ectoderm more. Great video though
Doesn't the heart and circulatory system also come from the mesoderm?
this slaps.
is that a good thing?
Hard

there are going to be exceptions to each of these. i highly doubt that particular one will come up, but you never know.
I feel like I have to relearn these every 2 weeks.
I love you.
