Just to let you know, we did the same thing back in 1981. We bought an abandoned grange hall in Virginia. Everybody thought we were crazy. We didn't know what we were doing, but in the end, we had a charming home on 2 acres in the back woods of Virginia. Since then, we have done that many times, and we are still broke. Enjoy the journey. And, for what it its worth, we paid 8 grand. No septic, water, or electricity.
Boy did I laugh when you said $30k for that building. That is a bargain, and that little town looks awesome. Good luck guys, and just keep plugging at it. If you do something meaningful on the place everyday, you are winning 👍
Sara, feel free to nerd out on the finance side for us. 😊 Wishing all a blessed and peaceful Memorial Day and a heartfelt thank you to all who have served. 🎗
That would make a good episode, focusing on the overall cost of such a project. Planning ahead for a budget based on present condition and what the final vision is can save a lot of heartache. Since they will do most of the work (other than what requires a license) that cuts costs dramatically. Another consideration besides materials and specialists would be scheduling inspections for new work requiring such and working on other aspects while waiting. First time renovators often learn the hard way but even then the lessons are invaluable.
The "primitive" bath and kitchen facilities add to the adventure! My husband (then boyfreind) and I moved onto my land and lived in a tent within an event-tent. We used a porta-potty, solar shower, and grill... while we built our house(He's a master electrician/carpenter and I had done plenty of re-model work). June through October....married Dec. 31 in our new home! It's an adventure that we still talk about 14 years later. Enjoy it...the good and the bad, it's all great memories you're building. Oh...yes, I'm interested in the financials as well.
Lived near there as a child. Glad to see the Town is being preserved / repurchased. As cost of living has exploded in many metro areas these towns will become a treasure in property and especially the people

My my my.. seem you two are adjusting.. I can’t wait to see what is next for this old building.. I like the price and of course the peach smell. Hugs guys..
I would like to hear more on the financial side of your operation. I want to get into this type work and ownership but have not jumped in yet due to the fear and risk of ownership outside of our home.
Hey all, for everyone who is curious on the thread, I'm from Johnston and I'm pretty sure Johnston's slogan, "Peach Capital of the World," came about as a result of a census back in the day. At one point in the US, Johnston had the most peach trees per acreage for their size than any other place in the US.
Just found your channel an hour ago with your old bank building project. I've now discovered the virtual treasure trove of your previous content which is right up my alley ~ haunted places, abandoned places, and best of all, abandoned haunted places. But seriously it's great I have a lot of stuff to watch until your next bank video is uploaded. But back to the bank project, you two are the perfect pair to bring that building back to life and the whole town realized that the instant they met you. It's still early, but the synergy is already very apparent.
It was nice you shared the purchase price, I know, I was curious. And....yes, I'd be interested in the cost breakdown of projects and renovations. Hopefully you'll be able to cut the costs by upcycling, salvaging materials that are in keeping with the age of the building. You mentioned, moving in together, curious about your relationship. I'm sure it's probably in former videos but I only started watching with the purchase of this building. Just an FYI - I live in Pasco County Fl. currently. I used to live in the Brandon. Seffner, Valrico area and worked in Tampa for many years. Also lived in Savannah for 5 years, so familiar with the more southern way of things!
Greetings and welcome to SC!! My wife and I just found your content and we are your neighbors in North Augusta. We will come by one evening to say hello and perhaps we can treat you to dinner. Be safe be blessed!!
Welcome to The Ridge! Nice folks in Johnston. When you get time, check out Christina’s Farm to Fork in Edgefield and Juniper in Ridge Spring, along with a number of restaurants in Aiken. Take a drive next spring to see the peach blossoms; they’re magical! Very best wishes!
It seems like a good price and hearing about the financing as it goes along on the remodel would be very interesting. Can’t wait to show up on day and skate the front curb.
Hi! Since you're now nestled in the bosom of the Peach Capital of the World, could you please share updates on the peach crop? I know our spring in the Upstate was pretty mild. I hope there are no lost crops this year, as there were last year.
I'm really surprised by how much this beautiful building in a quiet Middle of the town . That's crazy compared to Lebanon. Thanks for sharing....have you thought about how you'll use the property? Coffee shop downstairs, residence / rentals upstairs? 😊 Glad the facilities have been sorted out!
@@DraysWorld A shop that focuses on peach related items seems fitting. Incorporating graphics that detail the local history can add charm to whatever business it becomes. While potentially costly, a mural on the right-side exterior wall can make the place a tourist draw for photo ops, potentially enticing customers to roam inside as well. There is always the option of renting out the lower floor as a commercial venue given the nature of the access points.
Here in the UK many of the high st banks have closed and most of the beautiful old bank premises have been remodelled as pubs. With the marble and all the other trappings of high financial institutions left in place they make for a very atmospheric venue..wishing you both much success in this venture.. kind regards
"@aprilmae274" left this comment on your "Taking Out the Trash" video: "It's crazy, but I am almost sure my Grandfather stenciled the lettering in your window there. Hello from Texas.. glad you enjoyed your road trip to our state. I am excited about your restoration and wish I had made skills to do the same type projects ! Best of luck and I will continue watching your progress.
Hello D & S, My Son Joel P. told me about your channel. I don't know if I met You when he was living on the sail boating St. Pete.? I have subscribed, and will be watching your video journey fixing up the building. Good luck. Russell.P
You guys are a beautiful couple. Had to laugh but that bathroom situation was my first thought lol. I thought you were doing sink baths at the bar 😂. I look forward to seeing your progress on the bank laundry mat!!
I'm so glad you posted. I'm anxiously awaiting further videos on this project. And so nice to meet Sara(h?). Hope you had a lovely evening at the party.😊
Be glad you chose a very small town. Anywhere else, there would be building permits (and more permits and more permits) which require detailed construction blueprints, probably an engineer's sign off on the safety of the building ( and if not safe, it would have to be torn down and start over), $$$ for permits, building inspectors telling you all the things you did right that they find wrong, and no way in the world would they allow you to move in until after final inspection.
Curious, I did some research about Johnston, and found this description of your building: "Bank of Johnston, 534 Calhoun Street (c.1888): Two-story, stuccoes brick bank building with glazed terra-cotta facade, remodeled in 1908. Second story is dominated by large Diocletian window with diagonally latticed muntins, egg and dart molding, and console keystone. Bays are defined by four pilasters with Scamozzi capitals. Central bay is pedimented and has acanthus leaf and scroll acroterion and cartouche with swags. Paneled terra-cotta parapet is surmounted by four ball finials. The original tile floor and vault are present in the interior." I think your biggest architectural challenge will be choosing what to replace those double glass doors with. Because they're kind of an abomination! LOL!
The other You Tube Channels I'm subscribed to, don't want their location known for many reasons. Surprised this one seems to be more open about where they are
I love nostalgia , days gone by decor. Like time stood still for 150 years ,for all I care, as long as it's been restored tastefully. I'm curious to know if you're keeping and restoring the old doors that stand behind you in this video?
Im down here in Columbus GA, I have always heard the Peach State!! IM 60 years of age an my whole time has been spent here!! I have never seen one peach grow!!!!
ga farmers got smart and mostly got out of peach farming the weather here just isnt right for peach farming because of the bipolar weather patterns its impossible to predict how a peach crop will do and its now gotten worse because of the changing weather patterns
This is fantastic. I see these renovation videos all the time and I love them, but that is the one thing missing is the list of actual costs. I think it is wonderful that you are sharing the financial impact and wanted to ask Sara(h) if you plan to keep a running list for an accurate cost breakdown after all is said and done. I think this is the one thing that keeps most people from jumping in and doing something like this (the lack of information on how much it actually costs). That info may be out there but I do not see it often where there is an accurate record of all costs. Excellent idea
Bonham and Travis from Alamo were from Saluda County. Go up 121 north a few miles and will see a monument! Bonham’s birthplace is near Saluda - Ask at historical society (beside old saluda theater) and might can arrange a visit!
Maybe somebody knows where the original vault of the bank went. Maybe it can be returned. That would be a nice feature for the building. I bet that unit still lives out there somewhere in the neighbourhood.
There was an unused bank building like that in the small Texas town I grew up in. I wanted to buy it and do just what you're doing now ... but back in the 70s. Had to subscribe so I can keep up with your progress.
yes, i would be interested in how you will turn this into profits and future plans and costs. People in SC might come by and drop off food for ya knowing you can,t cook there yet ,
Thanks for sharing that information - I was surprised to see you were willing to - and seems like a good deal considering the housing market atm. I'm curious what are y'alls plans for after it's rebuilt? For some reason I can imagine you being an ice cream/bakery shop with a little hat and apron - that picture fits in my mind for you so well but - haha that may not be what you planned!
Now I have to see where this goes. I'm curious what you're going to build in there. For 30K I think you had to do it. In my neighborhood that money will get you a parking spot.
Yes please, we would love to know all the details of the financing and construction costs. Also, details about where you found it listed. I’m a small time investor/Airbnb host. I’d like to move out of Atlanta, somewhere slower paced with more nature and wildlife. Houses everywhere seem to be overpriced. I think you guys are smart repurposing a commercial property. I can’t wait to see what you do. Maybe the downstairs could be a gourmet donut shop.
I get such a kick out of the Jone's Laundry sign, which was there for decades. Certainly, the original guy's name had to be Jones. Yet, he sticks an apostrophe within his own name to show the possessive. (The correct form would be Jones' or Jones's.) 😂
I'm going to watch this rebuild like I watch @AlexWild build his underground dugouts. Can't wait to take this journey with you. I want to someday do this same thing to a building in small-town Iowa. I wish you a lot of success.
My wife and I love the idea of this type of purchase. i would love to know more about how you find a building like this and can actually purchase and live in. What are some of the restrictions on business, vs residential, commercial. and how do you classify this for purchase or financing??
For building like this, you’ll have to find private financing. There’s no way a bank will lend on this as collateral. We found the property on loopnet.com. there are a lot of options out there but look for a mixed use in your search. Make sure to do your due diligence and find out if the town has any restrictions on living in the building first.
Congratulations on such a Peaceful, Lovely Restoration of such a Charming Southern Peach Style way of Life. Johnston, South Carolina truly deserves the adoration & appreciation you are giving. I wish you much peace, joy, strength and inspiration on such a marvelous adventure. Our Restoration Nation channel…is a personal favourite, regarding the preservation of fantastic historical sites. ❤❤❤
Curious does that locality have zoning laws concerning residential use of former commercial property? Wondering if you had any challenges being able to live there since it's former commercial property.
It is zoned as mixed-use, which means it can be residential and commercial. Our building happens to be the only building in town that is zoned mixed use, but that is changing soon. Johnson is very easy to work with and has stated that other buildings in town available for mixed use will be recognized as such very soon.
@@DraysWorld this is so wonderful to read where we live it is a nightmare of permits and so many thou shalt nots that makes it so difficult to even make improvements on ones own home. You choose the right place you make a beautiful couple.
I was curious about what you paid for the building. Thank you disclosing that information. Did you do any negotiating on the pricing? Who did you talk to about buying the building? Who did you make the payment for the building to?
Love the videos ! Idk how I found your channel but this bank has my interest. Love the info you are giving about the process! My top question is how did you find the building?
Hmmm you got a loan from a bank, you live in a bank that then becomes a laundromat. If thats not money laundering, I don't know what is. 😂

For some reason I can imagine you being an ice cream/bakery shop with a little hat and apron - that picture fits in my mind for you so well but - haha that may not be what you planned!
You two are inspiring. I am looking into this in the midwest...
Good to see Sarah on the video……
GO TEAM! Peaches and sawdust! I'm so exciting for you two! BTW, hows the roof look?
Now I have to see where this goes. I'm curious what you're going to build in there. For 30K I think you had to do it. In my neighborhood that money will get you a parking spot.
While we were looking for buildings, we saw a parking spot in Brooklyn for $99,000
@@DraysWorld Wow!
Thoroughly enjoyable series. Thank you!
I get such a kick out of the Jone's Laundry sign, which was there for decades. Certainly, the original guy's name had to be Jones. Yet, he sticks an apostrophe within his own name to show the possessive.
(The correct form would be Jones' or Jones's.) 😂
Awesome video! Sending love...embrace...and hopes for the best in this adventure for you both!
I'm going to watch this rebuild like I watch @AlexWild build his underground dugouts. Can't wait to take this journey with you. I want to someday do this same thing to a building in small-town Iowa. I wish you a lot of success.
I am enjoying your renovation videos and am excited to see your progress! Dreams and attaining them make our lives such a happy adventure!

What will you pay for property Tax on the old Bank and will you get any help for the Town/State with the fix up ???
Welcome to our world!! You will enjoy our small welcoming community. 6:11
Great video! Yes, I’d like more information regarding the expenses for renovating such an amazing building like yours.
Talk to the sheriff or a historian to see if anybody famous robbed that bank in the past! Get the police report if possible, and frame it?
Excellent idea! Someone did mention a robbery in the history. I’ll ask the sheriff. Thank you and thanks for watching!
I was curious about what you paid for the building. Thank you disclosing that information. Did you do any negotiating on the pricing? Who did you talk to about buying the building? Who did you make the payment for the building to?
Cool old building I would want to get those old fireplaces functional again
Thats an awesome project.
Thank you!

Great addition to the building. 🇺🇸

Love the videos ! Idk how I found your channel but this bank has my interest. Love the info you are giving about the process!
My top question is how did you find the building?
