Hello, a friend of mine sent me this video because me & my wife also purchased an old bank in my wife's hometown in florida. The bank was built in 1907 & closed in 1936 then became the post office for many years until the new one was built. Your video caught my attention because ours went from bank to post office to insurance company. Ive been in construction my whole life & have a deep passion for historic buildings. Im doing most of the restorations myself & have learned a lot about what not to do with historical buildings. The most important part of a 100 year old building is they have to breathe! If your brick is clay or limestone fired brick, never use anything harder than a type n mortor mix - 1 portland, 1 lime & 6 sand - this is very important. Those old bricks need to breathe & you never want to seal them with any material that isn't a breathable material. I'm currently starting the interior remodeling of the building & would love to trade building war stories with you. This has definitely been a roller coaster ride of emotions for us both, but it is an intense labor of love for me & my wife. Seeing your first video actually cheered me up, especially how excited you guys were about your purchase. Most people also thought we were crazy & some still do, but keep it rockin because the satisfaction of giving an old building some love is very rewarding for us & it is definitely an adventure! Thanks for the videos, maybe we'll create a few & post them ourselves...

I'm looking forward to the next video. Do take care, be careful. My husband and I have totally remodeled our first apartment with the landlord's blessing (20 years ago) then built our second apartment in a friend's barn loft at their invitation (14 years ago). My husband is a self employed handyman, does everything but roofing. I helped do all kinds of stuff with the two apartments. So I can appreciate what you are doing. I wish we were in a financial position to buy some unique structure and revive it and make it into an interesting home. But I'm 72 now and my younger husband is 55. I'm not able to help now even if we had funds for a project, hurt my back real bad recently and not getting better even with PT, chiropractor and massage therapy. Takes me days to clean our small apartment now and some things I can't do by myself anymore. That's why I have concern for you.😊
Anyway I'm going to enjoy watching you transform this great old building.❤😊

You might find a young strong back or two to help with cleaning, loading trash for the dump, wiggling behind stairs to pick up debris, etc. Something tween/teen boys would be great at and they'd love some extra coin, not to mention a trip to the transfer station! 😉

For the brick walls-to save on work and if you agree, obviously; something you can do is to leave the plaster over the bricks that are too damaged. Remove as much as possible or as muxh as you want and Carefully cut the plaster to match the brickwork and then paint the plaster as if it is outdoor scenery...with the brick work looking like you are looking out from inside the ruins of an old building. This may not be doable though if there is lead in the plaster/paint so...yeah lol..and the pipes...o wow. They would so good exposed-you can make them look copper or anything once done installing, should you choose for that type of look. I am just so excited to see this building hahaha sorry

Is your new area, snow ,or hurricanes or flooding??
How do they do with electric outages? Our small town is super quick with fixing that! Being prepared is a big thing for me, as I am now disabled! I love to watch what you are doing!!

Price check, how much did you pay for the building? Also please show us a spreadsheet at the beginning or end of each episode on costs. Looks like you are downtown, hope you turn it into a mixed use with apartment up top and a coffee/pastry/book store at sidewalk level.

We will be sharing finances, but probably not every episode. We are taking suggestions from locals of what to do with the downstairs, but we are definitely going to live above. Thanks for watching!

Hey, I seen out in San Francisco to use the fiber net with like an epoxy over the brick they sprayed it on and it really it was for earthquakes and also for structurally cuz I think you're going to have to repoint a lot of that brick and that's a lot of work good luck to you I would pick up a little generator Harbor Freight as a little Champion like 3200 that would do most of the stuff you want to do you guys got a lot of work ahead of you as for the young not the old at my age I get the lawn chair out and hire a contractor to do it

A generator is definitely in order. I’ll look into this brick structural treatment you speak of. I’ve never heard of it. Thanks for watching!

I talked to a friend about this he told me its not cost effective. He did say most likely the walls are couple bricks thick and the inside wall of bricks might have to come down and be redone with stiffening metal. this is the tried and true method he did say its not an DIY task you can maybe help but its a pro that is needed. I know that the floor above I would wait till you see about walls as they add horizontal steal beams which the floor joist attach to. finding a good mason is the thing. good luck
