This is exactly what I needed! I’m in my 50’s and was finally able to get my first drum set after giving up lessons when I was younger. It’s never too late to learn and do what makes you happy!
This week ill be 53. I am learning the drums for two years ( and a month). Probably its too late to became an advansed drummer, but it is a fun and also it makes me more round musician and helps mine songwriting a lot ( i play guitar and bass too).
@@scottwilbur2565 here knocking on the 66 door. Sometimes I think I must be a silly old man doing this but it is fun most of the time but with you not a lot of time to get this down. I do like Stephen's method. I purchased some lesson from him so hoping he gets me there quicker. Just been at this since April late bloomer or just late.
@@johnnyappleseed5029 😂 well I decided to start learning at 41 years old and it literally blew my mind when my hands and feet were that connected! You would think after that many years I would know my own limbs 😂😂😂
Very cool, downloaded the guide!! Still would be great to have all those 30 exercises shown on a video, maybe weekly a few of them as follow along? Love your content!
I’m not a beginner and I am not at all glamorous. I play in 3 bands but my contribution is very basic time-keeping. 9:15 This session was super informative for me and allows me to progress with confidence. Thank you Stephen
Stephen, this guide is so great! I am really looking forward to getting throught to day 30 and then be able to play all grooves in a row at some point in time. Thanks a lot
This is a great course, I have been working through it, definitely taking more then 30 days for me but that’s ok. Only thing I’d like added would be a BPM guideline to be able to know when I should consider myself proficient enough at one to move on to next. Thanks…if any more experienced drummers know please reply.
Downloaded. After noticing that I couldn't do left foot timekeeping in most circumstances I've been practising linear patterns, really basic ones like rh-lh-lf-rf repeated, then change the order after 4 bars to reduce reliance on my right hand for timekeeping. I can practice that easy off the kit too which is really important otherwise I'll wake the kids 😆.
As always Stephen you did not disappoint. I've always known I needed a specific coordination exercise. I have your PDF on learning songs by ear and the I have a structured way of improving my timing but I didn't have a structured path to improving my coordination. So thank you, this was super important👍🤗
I almost gave up, largely for being lazy and/or unfocused but I found myself tapping rythms all the time, I actually love drumming, always have, even though I cannot by any stretch call myself a drummer of any kind. In the end its up to me, lets face it one doesnt get this good (talking about you Stephen) without effort, you make it seem so effortless, that can only be the result of decades of focused practice. With this I now know where to make kick start my previously failed efforts. I will manage, unless I give up, but I promise I will give it a more than a shot. Nice to see I'm not the only old fart around here.
Great video. Was stumbling through this slowly - hadn't really plateaued yet, but the climb was progressing slowly. This feels like you just showed me a staircase.
I’ve been drumming a long time but definitely feel stuck in my ways at times. I’m going to use this guide to help with creativity and consistency. I play heavy, fast music and I’ve been practicing tightening up blasts and d-beats. As far as covers I’ve been working on some Integrity songs.
Wow! fantastic lesson Stephen and guide i will be starting it today as my practice has been rudiments then basic groove and stuck in that rut for over a year. I can play a few basic beats pretty well but my 4 way independence is rubbish, so this will, and has come at the right time in my journey to playing drums many thanks great work
Thanks, Stephen. I answered your questionnaire and your class included my main trouble. So, in about 30 days I'll tell you if I remain a non-glamorous beginner or if I can play 'When the Levee Breaks correctly'... :) :) :) See you in a month
I have been working on triplet flow exercises, syncopation, and sticking patterns. By the way, I am over in Auburn Al. Apparently you are in the Marietta Ga area. Do you ever do in person lessons?
Stephen, recently all your narative sounds mostly like you are convinced everyone will give up before they even have tried to learn anything... please stop with encourigments in every other sentence :) I must add you're pretty smart to explain and you could do it in half the time, especially since you provide PDFs... You do a very professional work in teaching by the way
Ok first 30 minutes... my brain hurts! But I'm doing things I never thought I could. What about balance? There seems to be s balance element here. Throne position?
The talking in the beginning is great for those of us who listen and learn thru explanations as well as visual exercises... learning the the 'why' is very crucial to help self diagnose moving forward and trying to improve, just my 2 cents....
Holy Jesus word salad Christ… Drumming starts 10 minutes in… *Spoiler alert* It’s the most basic 4/4 rock beat imaginable. You could learn more from a gif in 8 seconds…
great stuff, I'll give it a shot. Just a question, should this be cummulative? Meaning day 2 you practice 1 and 2; day 3 practice 1,2 and 3 etc or how'd you recommend keeping fresh the first days as you move forward?

Coordination: What you think you have until you start playing drums......
Most important yet often overlooked topic. great vid. Thanks
It was the exact moment that I sat down at a kit about a year ago that I learned the right hand and foot shared a brain 😑😂

thank you for making this video, you are a brilliant teacher

I don't know where I'm at as I can play, I just want to play better. I do enjoy your lessons. Rock on.
Where are the recordings for this?

Another great video! You always play a 4 piece on your videos. Is that what you would recommend for a kit, or would you move up to a five piece?
Oh, that’s EXACTLY what i want to practice out of, those weird studders when doing just slightly complex stuff as I get faster
