- Опубліковано 19 лис 2022
- Doddy is back with another epic bike build! For this one, he's taking inspiration from the past to build a bike with some of the most cutting-edge tech on the market right now! Manitou have sent Doddy a Mezzer Pro fork and a shock to do whatever he likes with, so why not pay tribute to what the original suspension would have been on? We're modernising the Manitou FS, complete with an insane paint job from Ali at @fatcreationscustompaint!
In association with Hayes Group
A huge thanks to Manitou, YT Industries, Hayes, Fat Creations, Reynolds, SunRingle, ProTapter for making this build possible!

Let's face it, every build Doddy has done has been a work of art. Leonardo Doddy Vinci of MTB builds
I would have said LeonarDoddy Vinci instead...
The production on this video is top notch. The music choice absolutely slaps and the shots are beautiful.
Agree.
Much appreciated! We have a great team of people working behind these videos! Thanks for watching, and safe riding!
I couldn't agree more !! This is real pleasure to watch !! Thank you GMBN :)
GMBN - are y’all using a RED for these shoots?
Modern retro is so damned cool. Esthetic yesteryear combined with modern technology offers a unique perspective, be it a retro lamp with L.E.D's in the living room or a refurbished 80s car without the wiring/ignition problems.
It can be applied to virtually anything from the past, the only limitation being imagination.
Great video yet again, presented by the quintessential geek of mtb.
Ahhh Doddy, you know how to get an old blokes heart racing.
That was just sublime. I can't put into words how cool that whole experience (experienced through you!) was.
For an older bloke, the old stuff is an exquisite memory, if not experienced, than definitely longed for.
The new stuff... well, that is a whole new kettle of fish. The future is now, so let's jump onboard!
Very Nice build! So great to see Manitou getting some credit for the awesome products they offer. I really hope Doddy does a proper review of how good manitou feels compared to the off the shelf RS/Fox gear we get rammed down our throats.
It's a pity you didnt jump on the Manitou bandwagon when the released the mezzer, they had a limited edition Silver fork, would saved you painting it :)
Good to see Manitou getting some deserved attention on your "Best Build Ever". The current RS/Fox duopoly isn't doing the industry any good.
I refuse to get either. I've always run Manitou, and recently, DVO!
@@darkriverracing22 Appreciate you choosing the Science of Smooth. Which Manitou fork(s) are you running?
@@manitoumtb3259
I’m still in the process of trying everything available in mountain biking. Manitou is on the list for sure.
Best GMBN Tech video till date!!
Thank you! Your support means a lot to us! 👊
Doddy and the team have perfected the art of filming mountainbike. I love Doddy's commentary it fits absolutely perfect. Great video 10/10 would recomend.
You know a person adores the sport when they're almost brought to tears when reviewing a bike.....so cool :)
Absolutely incredible build. The color choice is so spot on to bring the past into the present. One of the best custom builds I've seen.
The emotion here, is palpable. The bike turned out amazing!! I love retro, and I love that the whole bike paid respects to the heritage of what was going on in the late 80's and early '90's. Beautiful!!
As the owner of a Mezzer pro myself I can also say that they are infinitely the best forks I've ever used. And man they look awesome painted like the ones on that beast😍
What settings are you running? Trying to get this fork to feel as supportive as a fox 38, mostly running recommended Enduro settings for 75 kgs
@@EcologicTwinkie honestly, as I got them, I've done nothing other than compression and rebound to how I prefer it, that's it 🤣 call me stupid but mine feel great.. best I can recommend is as Doddy, haha.
@@blusoda0021 nothing wrong with that, more time riding less time tinkering is the best way to live life sometimes!
Thank you for choosing the Science of Smooth!
My first hand built bike I made was a Manitou FS and I truly miss that bike. The YT looks amazing!
Back in 1991 at the Moab Fat Tire Festival, Doug Bradbury of Manitou let me have a go on his original full-suspension bike with the elastomer forks at both ends. Doug had me ride the bike straight on into a high curb; and, to my amazement it easily handled the challenge. My first after-market suspension fork ended up being a Manitou.
Love the build Doddy! Great choice of fork. I run a Mezzer on my Specialized Status 160 custom build and it's a beast. Great alternative to the Fox and Rockshox stuff that you see everywhere.
I really love the fact that this channel show Manitou's products, I love my Fox Factory but damn my Machete Comp with the ABS+ damper made me fall in love with HT and mountain biking.
This looks great Doddy. I'm going to pick up one of my frames tomorow from the same anodizers/polishers who did the finish work on those 90's Manitou's.
That's one awesome build! Awesome job Doddy and team! Cant wait to see what you have planed in the future
I'm a diehard Manitou fan, and can absolutely vouch for their forks. Even their cheapest fork [Markhor] is incredible and surpasses any budget fork I have ever ridden, super plush and still has a lot of the tech found only on high end forks.
Glad to have you as part of the Manitou family!
First off, hands down one of the coolest builds ever on UA-cam! Second, I too was one of those obsessed kids in the 90’s cutting out magazine photos and putting them up on my bedroom wall. Now I’m in my 40’s and have had the privilege of building up some of those old mtbs I could never afford as a kid and after a few retro bikes I have no interest in riding them. I’ve always been an adopter of the new tech and geometry. But again, what an amazing build. Well done.
Doddy... such a great vid touching the love for the old and new....I think your best and most honest yet.
Damn Doddy, you knocked it out of the park with this one! Seriously beautiful build bud. I do hope you get to keep this one as it's so you.
I'm glad to see that Manitou is still alive and kicking. Back in the 90' I worked for the company that did all the anodizing for Answer. I was drooling over the parts that came through on the daily. Unfortunately even with an industry discount, I couldn't afford a frame. I really wanted the hardtail.
It’s great that you have done a video with Manitou. Manitou need to release that Colour scheme that are the best look forks since well the original efc
Love the colorway!
It may be a great idea to auction the bike and donate the money to one of the many great causes out there. It's an AMAZING build, a work of art for sure and having the background retro inspiration AND the fact it was personally built by Doddy makes it that much more valuable
Awesome video Doddy, you're the best GMBN presenter.
Being a tall rider I get excited every time Doddy builds a bike. This time I found a tear in my eye. A true tech classic! Cheers! 🍻🍻
I think a Nicolai frame would be more fitting. Especially with the machining details they tend to have.
@Andrew Dodd Actofive P Train would have been perfect. Capra is pretty good as well tho
This bike is really amazing. Great job Doddy. I hope you get to keep it forever. Looks like a ton of fun. Am I jealous? Yes.
Completely with you. Love the history and the look of the old stuff, but the modern tech is where things are happening. Would absolutely love to own something as cutting edge as this - the capability of the fork, frame, rear shock are mind boggling! keep up the good stuff, always enjoy your videos - educational, humble, down to earth - love it!
Great production and passion on display. The Manitou bike was certainly a dream bike for me, I also remember Marin using the design in the late 90s. Your modern version looked amazing too, especially the paint job on the forks. I would however have been more than tempted to use Magura brakes, painted in their standout yellow.
Great to see the inspiration and passion that went into this build Doddu. It looks like it rides really nicely.
Glad you like it, Lincoln! A lot of effort went into this build! It was such an amazing project to work on! What's your favourite feature?
This is an absolutely stunning looking bike! I only have only seen one of those original Manitou FS bikes in my life back in the mid 90's. I myself was riding a '93 GT RTS 2 / a Noleen coil shock and a Rockshox Mag21 up front back then. The tech nowadays is just amazing compared to the old days. I was actually still riding a '98 Barracuda XC URT up until 2018 that had a '98 Manitou XC tpc fork. It made the GMBN rewind segment 4+, yrs ago, but my newer plus hardtail is more capable.
Reminiscence! What a beautiful build that manages to bring tears of joy to the eyes of an old man.
What a fantastic build and video. I actually had the privilege of getting to ride one of the Manitou FS prototypes as a teen and still have my HT (hard tail) build hanging in the garage. That bike was a dream that you never forget. Thanks a lot for this video.
Finally a modern take on a iconic MTB of the past done right! Thanks Doddy.
This has got to be one of the best builds ever! I got very nostalgic seeing the FS DH. I had one in the mid '90's. All that I have of that bike is the EFC. You've outlined yourself with this project, Doddy. I hope to see more of it!
Fantastic Recreation, makes Me Feel Retro Like, Had the first pair of Manitou's on a Polished Alloy Framed Marin, much better than the Girvin Flex-Stem I had on a Marin Bear Valley ..
I'm now 59 years old, and Loving My very modern Giant Stance E+2 .
Keep it up with great video Guys & Gals .
Building a one off custom bike is a must. I built my first one in 2002 ( based on a saracen dual slalom frame), that thing ended up being so silent and compliant/comfortable. Sold for £600 in 2009, which got me started on my next build, an S-works full squish. Which was an absolute work of art, swapped for an audi s4 in 2011. I recently built a commuter all matt khaki and oil slick. Its so addictive, I'm always thinking of what my next build will be! ❤
This bike is bloody brilliant!. It is the sort of 29er to get. And that custom paint job!. Absolutely fabulous work!. Coupled with the production quality of this video. It is by far the best video I have ever watched on UA-cam. Well done Doddy!.
Beautiful bike. I hope that it rides as good as it looks. Also nice to see you featuring the Manitou products. There are very good alternatives from the two big names products.
A breath of fresh air.
No idea about the manitou suspension but the hayes dominion brakes are incredible.
Well done Doddy , work of art !!!!
Doddy absolutely smashed this build! 🙌
Totally love a project! Doing the research on the frame, components, weights, finding deals, compatibility of parts etc…
Holy crap what a gorgeous bike.
It really is! 🔥
I think Manitou should get together with Microshift & Suntour and create some serious cross-branding alternatives for MTB'sers
--- great build Doddy - that's mint
Nod to GT old school cranks, excellent 👍. The new ones remind of the AC cranks. I have both.
The throw back paint job. You've done something big there I think.
That's gorgeous and unique, well done. I've always had a love of cars until more recently where you no longer can work on your own project because technology has gone too far leaving you in the hands of the dealers, it's nice to see you can build something you're proud of and it's a bit of you in the build and your inspiration showing through. I need to get fit again as i've let myself go as i've got older 58 with 40" waist and bad legs that take ages to heal if grazed. The last time out on my mountain bike last year, had an asthma attack and ventolin didn't help much and ended up calling to be picked up...the shame! I've always kept my asthma under control but was shocked how i'd let myself go and felt reluctant to ride since then. I with there'd been better bikes when I was young, I don't think I'd ever have stopped riding but all my bike bent and buckled on anything off road back then.
i'm 54, lost some weight recently and it's helped my asthma a lot-not sure if it's clearer airways or better conditioning since i was dieting and exercising both. the nice thing about these lovely modern bikes for us older guys is that we can get out and ride in much more comfort and safety now-they're made for us! lots of little changes to my habits and patience really helped in my case. hang in there and give yourself a pat on the back every time you make a positive decision!
One and only time I've thought tan walls look cool. Bike looks amazing
Funny, I think bikes only look cool when they have tan wall tires on them.
I got to ride one of those FS for a year. It was such a huge step from aluminum hard tail. Classic Mt bikes are nutz when you compare to modern.
Very nice bike , I still have my 1996 marin nailtrail frs pretty much original , just with road tyres , love it , great to ride retro now and then , keep up the great vids , most enjoyable
This episode was made for me. I want these Manitou suspension fork and shock on my bike. I'm a Manitou fanboy.
Love to hear it!
Perfect 90's flavor with just the right amount of "Cowbell" Nice Doddy!
Such an awesome project. Stoked to be a part of it! 💥🤘💯
The paint scheme is just top notch
Lovely.
Being an owner of a 2016 Capra al, I wish YT would do a frame only option.
I'm thinking about swapping my Capra for a new bike and would love a new one, but they just don't do the speck I would like.
If they did a frame only I could spect how I wanted.
Great video, well done.
Modern retro is always a winner.
BEAUTIFUL !!!! Great build, congrats Doddy
What an incredible build Doddy. That exact retro Manitou bike was also a dream bike for me - that and matching chrome GT BMX bike of the time. I had posters and cutouts everywhere. I think a cool set of cranks that would have matched the looks of old cranks back in the day is Middeburn.
Lets be honest, back in the day they had no brakes and no suspension either - it would take the edge off but they weren't the safest (or easiest to ride).
Ok that's a BEAUTYFULL bike. Would be interesting to hear Doddys opinion on that fork and shock,i'm intrested for my 2014 nomad trying to save some cash to get them!
Doddy that bike looks super cool! So pleased you used the Capra frame, I got my first full sus mountain bike (Capra) about one and a half years ago and it still blows me away at just how good it is! Mountain biking is the best it's ever been!
Very well done, this bike is a modern beast now, thanks for sharing.
Top notch build, you absolutely nailed the fusion of retro look with the latest tech. P.S. I cannot get enough of those cranks. Gorgeous.
Epic build for sure!! super nice bike Great work Doddy!!!
Now that is a ridiculously beautiful bike and an amazingly shot/edited/produced video. Well done to all involved. Tell you what: why not give the bike away to a randomly selected winner drawn from everybody who has posted a comment here? I think that's an excellent idea. You know, deep down, that you want to give the bike away. Look into my eyes, GMBN. 👁👁You know, deep down, that you want to give the bike away... You know, deep down, that you want to give the bike away...
That is a stunning build Doddy
Loving the modern retro 👊🤘
Great stuff #GMBNTech 🤘
Glad you like it, Ross! Modern retro mountain bikes are the coolest! 👊
This and some of your other videos have inspired me in more ways than one. Congratulations on that fine bike, Doddy. And kudos to the production team for these wonderful videos.
Just simply beautiful! what a dream build 👌🏻
Super clip and bike thanks Doddy and gmbn! Send it to the bike vault ;-)
Haha! We'll make sure to send it in! 😅
Doddy thats one if not the best builds you've done 👍
Gorgeous bike Doddy, nice build!
Unbelievably flawless combination of retro and modern tech. Well done. Aesthetically amazing. The color pattern. The simple graphics. Spot on Doddy. A masterpiece. I’ll give ya $500 for it. 😂
Just love what you have created with this build. The bike looks stunning and a cool nod to those bikes of the past but with all the tech - nice one Doddy.
That is an absolute stunner of a bike Doddy, the Manitou FS was my absolute dream bike back in the day (apart from maybe the GT Xizang). My first pair of suspension forks were Manitou sports and I loved them to bits. I am torn though, I think the spec fits the whole modern retro theme perfectly, but as somewhat of an alternative build I'd have liked to see a different groupset, something from TRP maybe. I think my first mountain bike was running suntour, so something non shimano or sram would have been the cherry on the top. Perhaps an ingrid components derailleur as a nod to the paul components stuff. Other than that, when is it being given away as a competition prize?????
A beautiful creation. I agree completely with the idea that everyone should one day build their own creation. I did just that for my current xc racing bike. It comes in at 10.02kg as a full suspension and cost less than $4600 to build from all new parts I bought off the internet and a Chinese full sus carbon xc frame.
Doddy I thought you were going to cry at the end kudos 2u one of the best bike builds iv seen no better feeling than building it and sitting in the shed looking at it 👏 👍
AWESOME project. Really slick looking bike
from a mondraker to this one of a kind YT capra😮, amazing job doddy😮😮😮👏👏👏👏👏
This is so cool, love just frothing out on aesthetics and technology. I also think the custom built bike is a unique sort of artistic expression, everything from a parts bin bikepacking rig or coffee getter to a full on super bike allows for an expression of the way we all individually see bikes and bike riding and I just absolutely love it.
I couldn't stump up the extra to get a mezzer pro, and ended up with an expert with the irt bought separately. very decent fork.
I remember lusting after the original but THAT is stunning! 😍
this is what a call top quality content , we all enjoy that bike with you Doddy
The bike looks amazing love the black n silver sweet ride mate 👍👍👍🇦🇺🚲
Fantastic build Doddy, I'm a massive fan of manitou stuff and had plenty of them over the years (2's, 3's, mach5's, xvert's, xvert carbon DH and even a short spell on some Dorado's), I even loved the Easton and Answer names and graphics, there's just something intrinsically cool about them and it's great to see them back in the game.
IRC Kujo's......dream tyres, whatever happened to them?
That really is a dream build and what a privilege to have that opportunity.
If a lottery win comes my way, I'll be building something VERY SIMILAR!!👍❤️
What to build next? What about an all British superbike?
#gmbn #gmbntech #answer #manitou
Yo, Doddy! No hate to YT for the Capra, but the Manitou back in the day was a bike that was handbuilt in the USA and, yes, they were cracking quite a lot. I know this had to be done pretty quick, but I think an alloy bike, like a Nicolai or a Geometron would\ve been more in the spirit of the Manitou, maybe even a Canfield. Otherwise, very good job on everything else. I would've also reached out to Jürgen Beneke, if I was you. He's riding cyclocross these days and is a very approachable individual and a very nice person. He was also one of my heroes back in the day and I was pleasantly surprised to be able to connect to him. Cheers!
Sick ass rig Doddy 😯
Respect 👊🏿
I do think the bike super cool! Equally super cool is Doddy’s obvious love and joy in this bike! What a fun video- Thank you!
Excellent bike build, Thanks to all parties involved in this project!!
To be honest, regular GMBN stuff has gotten very shallow. But everything Doddy puts out is just pure class - and this one is just outright fabulous
Awesome video doddy! I have a manitou shock on my trail bike but not many people are familiar with them 🤔
Looks amazing. A real dream build!
Sick build. Imagine turning up at the bike park on top of that build, awesome
Awesome bike Doddy, great job! Love the the comparison of old school with contemporary tech.
Awesome bike, awesome video. Thanks Doddy 💙
That bike is stunning!! Somehow you've made something that's even nicer than the Mondraker you built recently!
Doddy you need to keep this bike!
Stunning build Doddy!
Great video Doddy. Always inspiring. Did I see you shed a tear?
Very nice video and a really great bike you built up. I've been riding bikes since the late '80s and can still remember Jürgen and his Manitou FS well.
Personally, I have a hard time when the frame, apart from the final design, doesn't actually have any relation to the original. But this is not possible here, since Answer/Manitou no longer creates frames.
I really like the choice of parts and in the end the bike looks stunning. Congratulations, very well done!
Fee
Brilliant video, enjoyed this so much, related to every single thing you said.
15:15 love that roast with british style
What a build and arguably your best build to date IMO. Looking forward to watching the painting of it. One question, why do you use two different types of grease, Park and the red one? Thank you.
