- I click into Pinkbike all the time. They do good work. Unfortunately though, a few weeks back, two of their content creators made some comments and showed their cards. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, so here are my thoughts. Let's keep things positive! Let me know who your favorite smaller MTB content creator is, down in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Let's keep things positive! Let me know who your favorite smaller MTB content creator is below. I'd love to check them out!
Me? 😅
Okay but seriously after I commented as a joke I got like 15 subs and that's a lot to me so thanks so much you guys :D
@Alankoulkoilee is my favourite finnish small creator and I like @PelkaaAlamakea too. He has english subtitles on some of his videos too. I like @Alankoulkoilee very much because he is close to the same level as i am at riding.
@@p0nni I literally just moved here and want to know what trails etc there are and this seems helpful
Not really a small channel, VanCan.
@@SummitMTB Where did you move? I mean what part of the country
Good on you, Ryan. It's a good thing UA-cam's algorithm can't tell the difference between people having fun, and people doing "the real thing". Or else I'd be pretty screwed.
Amen brotha
bahaha Seth , you’re probably the biggest influence on my decision to get back into bikes, so yes thank goodness!
Wait a minute @sethsbikehacks, I thought all your videos on how to strap the largest possible water bottle to a bike was aimed at aspiring professionals! How could I possibly enjoy every single one of your videos otherwise?
Watching Seth try 360’s and taco his wheels in downtown Fort Lauderdale, while cursing profusely, is what got me hooked on mountain bike youtube.
@sethsbikehacks your content is what inspires my interest in mountain biking. Racing has never interested me in the slightest.
I would never want to be a racer, and I also don't even care enough to be a pro freerider either, because the injuries just aren't worth it for me! I much prefer to express myself as a rider and video creator instead! I quite like making videos that people enjoy :)
...and thanks very much for doing what you do!
The OG has spoken.
Whistlers OG creator just commented.
Love you channel keep that content coming
Please keep them coming
Love the positive message here man! Thanks for sharing.
First, Weird thing to say from someone who started out on GMBN. And second, I started riding at 49. Since I have no friends that ride mountain bikes pretty much everything I learned was from these "small time non-racer youtube creators". I started riding for health reasons. You guys literally saved my life. And I'm thankful for it everyday.
There is a huge wave of us older riders. I do like to race, but it's just one of the fun things we can do as mountain bikers. We have several shops and restaurants in Southern California that host rides. I wonder if there are some in your area to join.
That is weird, GMBN was made for people to get into mountain biking (Look at Blake & Neil just doing stupid races). Yeah, Neil brings up racing a lot, but it's as a "life lesson" tip. The difference between the UA-camrs versus Racers is that... Well I want to see real trails, real people riding. Not racers trying to push themselves. I don't follow mountain bike racing because I don't follow sports, so Henry's mindset is very very bad towards riders who just want to 1. Have fun 2. Doing it for health and 3. Don't care about the professional scene.
beautiful
I'm 53 and I've been riding my entire life. First BMX, then MTB.
If you ever need someone to ride with in NJ-PA-NY area hit me up. Everyone needs people to ride with.
@@mylesreid709 I think your #1 should be #1, #2, and #3....your #2 could easily be anywhere there too. I also think many people mountain bike just to hang out with friends and cool people.
Wow, thanks for this Ryan. We indeed all start somewhere. There’s a lot of bullying that goes on in the bike industry and it’s nice to see folks speaking out.
if those comments were bullying... 🙄aren't we becoming too sensitive and delicate?

@BCpov I just want to thank you, Yuka and the rest of the UA-cam mountain bike community. I love your approach to videos and it has inspired me to overcome my fears. Much love ❤✌
100%
The refreshing side of you and Yuka showing genuine concern and at times fear of features, is SO relatable and real for most riders. I'm glad to see you commented. You two are a perfect example of being humble and showing the reality of progression in mountain biking!
Spot on Ryan. I do find it strange that Pinkbike, debatably the largest MTB publication, is so out of touch with a massive segment of the community.
They really seem to cater to their most rabid commenters. Love your stuff btw!
Things have gone very downhill since Levy left. The phoned in field test this year just really laid it out in the open that their content took a massive nosedive after Levy's departure. Probably some sour grapes with Henry and Kaz there. I suspect a bunch of other well known PB staff have left (i.e. Sarah Moore) but kept their departure under the radar.
They are not just out of touch, they are straight up toxic. I've seen one of their main editors make absolutely obnoxious, rude comments towards other users, then use their mod powers to delete the comment an hour or so afterwards. I saw this happen multiple times on "controversial" articles, where the main controversy was based around the fact the author of the article barely put any effort into it and people politely pointing out flaws or disagreements were insulted in return. If you watch some of their videos and read between the lines a bit, you can catch this person making similar comments, even to other editors.
The world is in desperate need of a written publication for the mountain bike world that is down to earth and not written by narcissists. I mainly follow NSMB, but I wish they would get more coverage and exposure, they seem and act like real people who engage with the community in a down to earth and respectful manner.
It’s that you ain’t hard core enough mentality. OK bro I get it, you’re just too cool. It’s a shame. I guess, pink bikes, too cool for the rest of us. 🤷🏽♂️ they used to be the ones that were the most down to earth. 😝 I’m sure you’re good dude let’s get back to reality and better contact pink bike!
Look at Pinkbike Academy. They are obviously out of touch.
Great video Ryan! The "watch me walk it" clip made me laugh because I make a point of including moments when I'm not feeling comfortable and decide to walk a feature or take the ride around. And you know what? People appreciate it because it makes them feel more comfortable doing the same.
Love your channel Dave (Dale's too). I appreciate many different riding disciplines but I'm more interested in the tech/trials trails.
Dude I love your videos because of THAT, you ride sensibly and include everything, from stuff I couldn't do (shredding steep techy trails) to stuff I would absolutely do (walking around those trails, haha).
Keep doing what you're doing!
Absolutely - those moments remind us of your human experience, and it also makes the wins even more satisfying.
Dude, if you're walking a section, it has to be incredibly dangerous! Seriously, you are absolutely right. Its good to see that someone even at your level is OK walking a feature
Exactly, when you or I or anyone posts showing walking a feature or taking the bypass or whatever is what I am looking for when I research trails to ride. I want to learn what are the challenging features so I know what to expect or what to avoid or even if the trail is one to even ride. The highlight posts are fun to watch but for me full raw pov rides are my research bible. Just found your channel and will be checking out your videos.
Thank you for calling this out. Pinkbike has had an attitude/gatekeeping problem for years and now they're surprised they're going to have to share their sponsorship budget with creators who actually make people feel included. Whoops.
Yes Ryan, bravo. I've always loved making inclusive content and being positive for the exact reasons you mention. I want people to enjoy my favourite thing as much as I do - doesn't matter whether old, young, male, female, novice or expert. Really pleased you made this video - mountain biking is inclusive, and there is far too much negativity out there that doesn't do anyone any good. 👏
Thank you Doddy!!!! Missing seeing your face every week!
Is this The Doddy??? Please tell me you're making a youtube channel!! Owen is great over at gmbn tech but I miss you!
Doddy!!!!!!! The myth, the legend!!
This is going to be a good video!
You have some great points. Everybody should be free to film and upload their ride or doing whatever video they want. It's great for everybody.
I think another good point to if people only had professional level videos to watch it could be detrimental to encouraging people to even try to start mountain biking. Some of that stuff looks cool, but is terrifying to people to think that’s what it’s all about. Lots of great points. Thanks for taking a stand Ryan!
truth. All it takes is a bike, go out and B1!!!!!
Subscribed!
The faster you ride with any action camera, the worse the video quality becomes. It gets pixelated, grainy and fuzzy at the same time. Just pause any riding video and try to tellme it's even close to 1080p
Not just the features, but the bikes. These guys are riding bikes that cost as much as a motorcycle. I'm not spending more than $3k EVER on a bike because I can't justify it with the amount riding I'm able to do.
So not only can I not relate to the smooth, bike park trails they ride, which have massive jumps but less tech features than my local XC trails, but I can't relate to the bikes.
Then you have guys like Sam Pilgrim, a crazy talented rider who's out there shredding free/cheap bikes, taking Walmart bikes to Whistler and the like and ending the video by saying you don't need to spend thousands on bikes to have fun.
You've got Spindatt saying "Every bike is a good time." You got Kev Central updating big box bikes to show it can be done and they can be adequate trail bikes. The gate keeping of MTB is the antithesis of the what the community aspires to be. Everyone out on the trails, pushing themselves just a little beyond their skill level in an effort to get better and have fun. Whether you're an XC rider or you're taking chair lifts at the downhill park. It's all good.
At least we're not roadies, right? 😉 (Jk)
What’s ironic is PinkBike got so popular because anyone could upload their own photos and videos to their platform before social media or UA-cam was really a thing. I remember being a 14 year old kid stoked to share my content on there.
“Stand Up to the Jump” is possibly the single most useful “dance” video on MTB UA-cam. I’d venture that simple video with a simple concept helped more people than any other.
YES. Every time I think about my jumping form “stand up to the jump” comes to mind
@@skyroach7158Same. Keeps this 51yo alive.
That song and dance improved my riding more than anything PinkBike has ever put out.
Even GMBN recently referred to this video 😂
Well shit... now that's in my head the rest of the day! lolollll
Love this Ryan. I truly feel that it's SO important for people to flex their creativity. Sometimes that comes in the form of making videos. I know for me personally it changed my life. I was stuck in the routine of life. Get up, go to work, go home, dinner, bed, repeat. But when I started producing content it sparked the creativity in me and I couldn't WAIT to film and edit the next idea. It brought so much excitement back in to my life. It's always amazing to see a new creator come on the scene and see that discovery happen for them!
Find Bobo and make videos together, it would be like chocolate meeting peanut butter.
@@VisionMTB We've done a couple collabs. He's in one of my shorts and I've appeared randomly in a couple of his videos. But nothing long yet. We're too far apart!!
What! I'm about to test the UA-cam search function to its limit@@CaliradoKid
Dude, keep doing you. My wife sends me your Reels all the time. You're hilarious.
Yeah but there's a fine line between "creativity" and full-on obnoxious clickbait garbage, isn't there.
Small creators FTW! Watching Matty Active go from a guy who stumbled into biking while delivering packages to making highly polished, fun, interesting videos while seeing him grow as a rider has been amazing.
I’ve always told people, don’t wait until you think you’re good enough to start making videos. Make videos now, because the people that are going to be the most invested in your story are starting at the same spot you are.
BUT WHAT'S THE BEST CAMERA FOR MAKING VIDEOS?!?!
@@nofrontbrakeslol wow…
😂@@nofrontbrakes
@@nofrontbrakes I used a razer gaming phone once, it did a great job recording only thing don't put it on the handlebars if ur riding tech.
I thought the same thing when watching Matty Active go from riding around the city on an entry hardtail to traveling out of Colorado on some really good full squish bikes.
Wow, I admire you for creating this reaction video. It's delivered in a very professional, and thoughtful way. I am one of those "bumbling down easy trails", and I started this at 9yo, about a year ago.
One thing that us small creators make it so relatable is seeing how we progress in both content creation, and MTB riding. I've accumulated so many GoPro POV videos of me bumbling down the trail, but I realised, if I put it together as a trail guide, someone will benefit from it and as a way of me giving back. Plus they can see it from a kid's perspective riding down double blacks on a 24 inch bike.
Keep shredding man! It's amazing what you do at your age, and inspiring!
Seriously, you're 10! Very impressive young man! You're killing it!
There's a dad that's been taking his son riding since 3 years old, he's now 6. To see the first videos to now, it's amazing to see the progress. His son just got 3rd in a 15 year and under downhill race.
I agree with you man!
@@baselsalam thank you 🙏
@@Druezy thank you, that's encouraging
I am 46yr old and very much new to MTB, So far I have recorded every ride I have made and hearing comments like this has made me want to post them. I think it is important for noobs like me to see where other people started from instead of just seeing seasoned shredders in every video. Seeing someone being reluctant at first to lean the bike into a berm or having timing issue's on jumps just like I am having is really important. Thank you so much @TheLoamRanger for being such a stand up classy guy. Much love from Fayetteville, AR
As someone who bumbles down trails and posts it on UA-cam sometimes, I greatly appreciate this video. Thank you for saying it on such a big platform. Also, you nailed it about trail recon. The only reason I started making videos was because there weren't really any other videos of the trails in my area at the time. I'm not fit, I'm not a great mountain biker, a "content creator", or an "influencer". I just like to ride bikes and sometimes make videos.
As a busy person who gets maybe 1h of riding every 2 weeks and can't find pictures on most of trailforks trails and can't afford time to go to the wrong trail centers or take the wrong bike, thank you for letting others see what the trails look like while planning the night before
I excel at bumbling down trails!
Some of my favorite videos are the local guys posting with a couple hundred subscribers, having honest reactions to scary trail features. In some cases they'll skip them, but in others they hit them and the stoke level is unmatched. I love your content, Pinkbike's content, and so many other big names, but the small guys are the realest of them all. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely this!
Amen!
Absolutely! I have had more than one person comment on my videos and say that they love that we're out there riding trails and hitting features they feel they can ride and relate to. I've probably had as many comments about how much they love seeing how much fun we're having as anything else. A lot of those Pro rider videos are highlighting things that less than 10% of the riders would attempt, and many are less than 5%. There has to be something to cater to the other 90%!!
Well said!
Thanks for sharing this Ryan, as a content creator this definitely hits. This sort of speak will continue to perpetuate barriers in our sport. Imma keep posting my dance vids tho.
Please do keep posting your vids, you are a riot, and make a huge impact to this community!

I found Pinkbike back in 20+ years ago, it was a gatekeeping toxic dumpster fire back then…. Not much has changed.
I listened to that podcast and as a bumbling occasional UA-cam video poster my response was to laugh as it was funny. Taking that poddy as seriously ‘gatekeeping’ comment is a bit of an disingenious fragile ego response sorry.
Personally I find these sort of click bait faux rage vids a lot more of an issue and sad internet trend 😞
PS love your proper videos, bumbling ones and all. Hopefully you get back to that quality content that pinkbike guys were talking about😉
Well said Ryan! That may have been an off the cuff comment by those guys (they are good dudes in our experience!) but certainly one that deserved to be called out. One of the best things about mountain biking is that almost anyone who can ride a bike can do it at some level, and love it just as much as a pro. Hope you get some sleep tonight!
The issue is as much as I like them this is a pattern of behavior. The pinkbike podcast often has comments that are disconnected from the average rider and quite dismissive. I get that the PB guys mostly hang out with industry people or at least people close to it but they need to be able to understand the perspective of a typical rider. That's what I tried to do when I was writing over a decade ago so I'm surprised they have a problem with it being older and way more experienced than a 25-30 year old, priviledged kid which I was at the time.
This video really lifted me up. I've put up a few very amateur videos, and plan to put together trail guides for all my local trails. I've been riding for just over a year. Pink bike content is so unrelatable to me, they test bikes I will never ride, and ride at skill levels I may nvere reach. I enjoy beginners and intermediate level riders putting videos up. Seeing growth in a person is way more interesting than pink Ike reviewing an 8,000 dollar bike.
Well said, that' is so true.
What a shit comment from two people at pinkbike! I’m disappointed in them and that they would use their platform to push that out. Let’s just keep doing our thing! Thanks for speaking out about this!
I agree, and saw your Trek Slash review and compared to theirs, yours were honest review, their review was biased PinkBike is being paid to do a good review. Lol.
Damn, i've never mountain biked but now I want in! This approach on making action sports accessible and welcoming really hit home for me. Thank you!
Doesn't Pink Bike produce Friday Fails? Talk about frivolous content. Entertaining, sure, but 100% frivolous.
Thanks for teaching us to "stand up to the jump" and being an advocate for all of us MTBers out here!
That video was really the turning point for me in learning to jump at 50+ .
Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. This just shows how we need more progressive thinking in social media. The only way to get good at it, is to do it. It’s like stand up comedy. You can only test a joke on a stage, and for social you can only find out what works and doesn’t work by posting and seeing what rises. We are in a new media landscape and old school thinking, even from the best, is not helpful. As an old school film editor and a newly started social media creator trying to discover a voice I deeply appreciate this video. Thanks again! ❤❤
Yes
I use it literally ALL the time. It helps me a bunch too!
I sing the song in my head on the approach to any jump to psych myself up and send it. I was afraid to jump prior to that video.
Wait, who are those guys?
As someone who lives away from home, videos by locals are my favourite thing to watch. Big shout out to @TrailAdvisor for showing all the best new Irish trails!
I hardly watch any MTB content creators on UA-cam and I've never listened to PinkBike's podcast. Here's my take: Do your thing but don't blow up "illegal" trails for views, clout or ego. Who really cares what PB thinks?
It's called "UA-cam" not "ProTube". This is not a money pipeline for professionals, it is a platform that was invented specifically for individuals to put their experiences out there. It is the exact opposite of what they assert.
Ryan well said. As someone in that slack group who you've helped many times it's refreshing to have someone call @pinkbike out. It's that attitude at pinkbike that's had me not paying attention to them for years. I focused my efforts in the beginning trying to make videos and blogs and spending days on end submitting and having them rejected only to be accepted when someone that knows someone gets it pushed through... not based on the quality but based on who knows who.
Gatekeeping is a pretty telltale sign of insecurity. Older media outlets like PB have to adapt to the changing times. The variety of YT content creators out there have done wonders for increasing adoption into our sport. I've been fortunate to have been around the scene for the last 25 years and can objectively say that new riders have never had it better . Keep on doing what you guys do.
Thanks for creating an inclusive community for ALL mountain bikers on UA-cam. The community is one of the main reasons I enjoy this sport so much and it's a shame to see Pinkbike discredit majority of their fan base. Making videos is a hobby of mine and I thoroughly enjoy it! It took me years to work up the courage to start posting my own videos. Thanks for being a voice for us small creators!
The guys with 400 subs and like 300 vids of every trail in their state are a hell of a lot more useful to me than pinkbike most of the time, regardless of their skill level.
Dissagree. I don't enjoy Pinkbike that much, but this is just making them look bad for nothing. They clearly were not talking about things you have pointed out and you have made these statements by those two much much worse just by this kind of analysis. Do not waste your time on such a pointless crusade and rather keep it positive. We are all from the same group of MTB lovers and that's what matters. If you do not agree with them, just don't watch/listen to them and find someone else. Simple as that
Bullying, gatekeeping and constant negativity have no place in our sport; at the end of the day we all dress up in silly costumes and bumble our bikes through the forest. Riding skill has no correlation with how valuable of a person someone is and anybody implying otherwise needs a reality check. Fight the good fight Ryan! 🫡
This video hit me right in the feels! Thanks for leading the charge Ryan! It felt like you were talking right to me…
I think what it all comes down to is that we all love this sport so much and we just want to share with the world to get more awesome people on bikes!
As a “Baby UA-camr” myself, I feel like making content that’s relatable to the “regular Bens” out there is the best way to make the sport approachable.
Thanks again!
Let’s keep getting more folks on bikes!

Same here. Let’s keep on uploading 🤙🏾
Dude you’re awesome, keep at it
You're one of my favorites dude!, inspiring and clear, keep it up!
I never comment. Never. But I really appreciate you speaking up. I’m a very low level rider and I completely appreciated some of these newer creators showing me trails and how to get better. Also having watched others like you grow in your abilities is a huge boost of confidence. Keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t listen to the noise. Happy trails.
Your comment has so much value here. You’re exactly the huge audience that’s the silent majority that can’t relate to elitist attitudes. Thank you for speaking up!
Can you please teach me how to stop commenting on everything on SM?! 🤣🤣🤣
Well said, Ryan. Imagine what the world would be like if we all encouraged each other rather than belittled each other.
Imagine being offended because someone doesn't like your UA-cam videos. You're out to lunch, buddy.
Unsubscribed.
Outrage bait. Sure it was a bad take from PB. But come on, this was on a podcast title pedantic pet peeves. They said up front, don't take us seriously. I imagine Joe Blow doesn't care what these guys think about his YT videos anyways (evidenced by the fact that there was no outrage when the pod was released).
No context and no nuance from the Loam Ranger here. If he thought this was truly offensive he could have reached out to PB directly and given an opportunity for a correction on their end.
Nobody was upset about this a month ago when the pod was released, but now that a content creator has pointed out that you should be upset you all are upset. Social media is strange.
Seth from Bern Peak started creating mtb videos from Miami, FL and look where his channel is right now. Never underestimate the power of small content creators.
Indeed but it’s alot harder to replicate now because those who have been doing for years have pushed the quality bar up alot. It’s harder to have a usp as more do it which makes it harder to establish yourself in an ocean of mediocrity that is UA-cam on any subject you choose
@@CM9999999999 I started making videos on MTB, but I realised there's much more to it, arguably it's easier now because there are so much content outside of MTB to have some small success as a creator. But everyone is saying, especially Mr Beast just create 100 videos.
What’s funny is Radek from Pinkbike started out by emailing us his early videos of the crew’s Calgary shenanigans to drum up interest in the PB site. Those early videos would give today’s Friday fails a run for their money. At the core, PB was intended to be a place for mountain bikers to share their passion…it has changed since the boys moved on to new pursuits.
I think Quinney has too great a voice at Pink Bike. I regularly listen to the podcast and hear him way too often, especially since he has such a narrow and rigid take on mountain biking (no type 1 fun for Quinney). They could do with a change of personality there.
I literally stopped listening to it. Bring back Mike or give us someone more positive.
it's nuts how annoying levy seemed much of the time, but jfc once he left everything was waayyy suckier.
Mate, I’m fully 100% with you on this! I could write a comment that would take 10mins to read about this! I’m one of those creators, (seems funny calling myself that), I’ve had a UA-cam channel for years and didn’t know you could even make money! So good on you for putting this up! I watch you and I know this would have been tough for you to put up! Well done! One day, like you say, I hope my content gets better! So sad that the ‘big wigs’ try and put a dampener on us little guys… anyway, water off a ducks back, I love your content and I love checking out the up and coming Mtb UA-camrs content, it’s encouraging and helpful in so many ways. I hope now that you, as a very much respected UA-camr, have had your say, can feel better and can move on and still enjoy the process because I would hate to not see you content anymore. I love it and thank you for doing it as it’s been so helpful to me and many many others.
I'll be honest, I watched a couple of Pinkbike vids and I couldn't stand them. They look down on things and people all the time. Stuck up is what they are.
Fuck I shouldn’t have uploaded my last vid without 10 years of racing background… shit my bad
Love your vids, didn't see last video, so I wasn't expecting you to comment here exactly 😂
@@nathankovach7414 yeah been enjoying vids from a lot of these channels
Thank you so much for sharing this - lots of smaller creators don’t often get this kind of backing. ❤️
Everyone that’s ever recognized me out on the trails has always been thankful and appreciative of the videos I’ve put out. The goal has never been to become famous or to put myself on a pedestal, but to provide an honest and authentic experience from someone who loves riding bikes.
Mah, who gives a shit honestly? People will watch what they want to watch, and it doesn't really matter what Pinkbike, you, me or anyone's opinion is. There's no "real content", there's just content. The content I produce on my channel, I don't even know what to call it, it's just what ever I feel like uploading at the time.
Some channels, large ones, usually have very analytical and financial reasons for what they produce, and other's are more creative, free form type stuff.
Anyhow - It's up to people to watch or not, and who cares what some dude says on some podcast?
Life's too short for that lol.
Man you're taking the opposite of a positive twist on something. You're whining about whiny content while producing whiny content. You found a a way to get offended about something that tons of people talk about all day and internalized it. Your therapist would chastise you for this Go ride
Well said! I consider myself an average to possibly below average rider and I've had many people come up to me to say they appreciate my videos because it shows them that they CAN do it themselves. If only pro riders made videos, everyone would be scared to even try! Kind of a short sighted approach for them to take.
I watched Matty Active when he first started. He wasn’t a great mountain biker by any stretch but his enthusiasm was off the charts and infectious. It has been fun to watch him improve over time. That kind of stoke exemplifies the soul of the mtb community. Keep it up!
Great channel!!!!
LOVE me some Matty!
me too I followed his channel and followed his journey and the reason we watch these "noob" videos is we can totally relate. not all of us are born skilled and pros so we cling on to something we can relate to. And not all of us ever dreamed to become a pro. Just a common mountain biker having fun with his mountain bike. these elitist think they know better.
Watching new riders advance is just as entertaining, if not more, than watching the pros
Matty is great. Wanna ride with him someday
I listened to the episode. I went back and relistened to minutes 27-32. The influencer joke was directed at Matt as a “how do you feel about this?” while also being self referential to working as basically an influencer. The internet filling up joke is as much about the ubiquity of video and how there is just so much. I think if you listen to the whole exchange There is a lot less here to make an issue out of. There’s room for everyone and no one is about to lose their influencer job because a couple people made a joke.
This 👍
But self righteous umbrage is the currency of the times
it's 2023, Feelings are fragile. People can't let anyone have an opinion anymore.
Also Henry’s comments were in the context of asking Matt how he felt about decade ago!
You should take a look an pinkbike’s most recent video’s comments. People are mad and it’s so funny
I'm fairly sure Henry would agree with you mostly on what you say Ryan. I believe he didn't communicate well on this and is just annoyed with how MTB videos are rated more on thumbnails and catchy phrases rather than hard work in the creation of content. I've heard Henry is super nice and don't think he meant it but he 'did' say it and that is not cool or professional. I'm also tired of people filming absolutely everything like 4th of July fireworks or riding the chair lift....the entire ride.
It's funny, I find myself pretty self conscious of my own riding and the content I produce already WITHOUT hearing a giant company (that has staff, writers and people to help create their movies btw) speak this way of the stuff us smaller channels produce. Definite punch in the gut.
Your content is some of the most relatable out there. No ego, just vibes, sometimes them are awkward vibes, but that what makes it relatable. Love what you're doing and watch all your stuff.
Your content is amazing! I love the diversity in your content. Keep up the good work, don’t let them get you down!
HUGE respect to you for calling them out on this. I had no idea. I wouldve never had any idea because I don't care about their podcasts. I wonder if they were really just having such a shitty day that caused them to say some stupid shit. I 100% agree. Yes, they're humans and they're allowed to make mistakes but It's no longer a "mistake" when you have the ability to influence potentially millions of people the way pinkbike does and it just simply makes no sense for them to be so blatantly rude and childish
It makes me think of Warren Miller. His movies captured the beautiful, simple joy of skiing, all the way from beginners to the most extreme and everyone in between. His love for the sport was so contagious that you couldn't WAIT to go skiing after seeing the new movie each fall. It was an event that kicked off the season in ski towns across north America and not a single one of us ski bums even noticed whether or not he raced.
I’ve never liked pink bike, I have always sensed a big ego coming from a lot of the personalities that are in the videos/podcasts
It's a podcast. Typically a podcast contains lots of mumbling, crap talk and other things you should take with a grain of salt. Honestly, nothing to be worked over about. As a super tiny content creator myself, I don't let small things like this bother me. There's always gonna be somebody hatin' or giving the thumbs down.
Pink bike sucks since Mike Levy has been on hiatus.
Yeah dumbo is nowhere near as cool.
Absolutely spot on!
Not to mention the fact that pinkbike themselves have a section of their site dedicated to people uploading videos.
I find it sad that Henry in particular seems to have developed this growing ego since leaving gmbn.
I've really missed the diversity of some of the other staff at pinkbike recently too. It seems to be these three that have really taken center stage which is a really shame and not the direction that I expected them to go when bought out by Outside media.
Thanks for speaking out and I think this was really eloquently said.
Wow.snobbery at its worst.
i started riding at 60 at 60 watching the more average riders trying more difficult stuff.ive learned so much more than watching pro DH guys or pinkbike content!
It’s going to be hard to watch these guys from now on without a sour taste in my mouth.
The fact that this video is 10:03 long shows the problem. I don't believe that alot of content creators are genuinely uploading because they love it, they are chasing a dream.
Aren’t we all.
I'm not really in the "mountain biking" sphere but i hate the idea of "not pro don't upload".
One of the amazing things about youtube is it is free and storage is expensive. Every video on my channel i had to delete locally so that i would have the storage to import new footage to make new videos. Because of youtube i can go back and look at my riding from when i first started, which i would have never been able to do otherwise because i didn't have the storage capability, and in doing that a video randomly went viral and i made some "free" money and a childhood dream suddenly seemed achievable.
People often criticize others in the position they want to be in because they "just got lucky" but you cant get "lucky" if you never put yourself in a position to get "lucky" in the first place. Even if i think a video is the worst video i have ever seen i will never criticize them for trying. These people clearly are just full of hate for no apparent reason and its a shame.
Thanks for posting. I’m new (at age 56) to MTB, and one of my favorite things about the folks I meet, even the total shredders at various downhill parks is how nice and supportive everyone is. It’s really special. Thanks for reinforcing that. Instant like and subscribe.
Well Said Ryan!
I started posting my videos to try and overcome my social anxiety. I'm not a good rider and I know that, but for me, it's trying to overcome a personal challenge that has affected my whole life...
And you better keep them coming, man! You ride decently, and you have fun doin so. No need for anything else in order to post your content!
Keep it up. You’re much better than me 😅. I just subbed. Maybe you’ll pick up a few more from this comment thread.
If you're having fun then keep at it. I follow several local guys that are beginner to intermediate level and have < 10 subs. I always enjoy their videos and appreciate the content as I often find new trails in the area that I've never ridden. And I like watching people of similar skill level progress.
@@anselmbuder Thanks man, I really appreciate it!
@@mike.thomas Thanks for the kind words and the sub. :)
I've come across the same attitude working in motorcycle media. Like you have no place being on press launches, or involved in the media as an influencer if you're not a good rider.
Typical "macho attitude" from these guys on Pinkbike (not unlike certain individuals you might find on the trail) and it really does show just how out of touch they are. I created my channel for myself and then for my crew. After that, anyone that watches or subscribes is a bonus. BTW, I don't even remember the last time I visited Pinkbike so there's that.
Kinda crazy comment being that their last Pinkbike Academy winner was based on Social Media appeal 🤷🏾♂️
These types of comments come from their own insecurities. Those I've encountered that punch down in their commentary have turned out to be deeply insecure and emotionally immature under the thin veneer of bravado.
That's just human psychology.
bluds talking like he's from the 1800s.
Actually, it was stumbling onto your so called “bumbling” 2017 and prior videos that inspired me to get back into mountain biking after a five year hiatus. I’ve found loads more usefulness and enjoyment from all of you content creators than from Pinkbike. So a big THANK YOU to you and all of you content creators for what you do! Don’t loose sleep over these guys!
The internet can be one of the most negative, hostile and mean places there is.
And those Pinkbike examples are as negative as anything I've ever heard. EVER!
The internet "filling up"? Seriously? Perhaps their name should be Pinkbike: Gatekeepers of the internet.
I ride 6 days a week, I have never been to a pro race or watched a pro race on UA-cam just not interested but I watch all the amateurs riding on UA-cam. Kinda funny I watch bkxc, Seth, singletrackrider, loam ranger, gmbn, and a few more, I never watch pinkbike don’t even sub them. The whole point of UA-cam is anyone can be a creator thats what makes it great variety.
I must say, Skills with Phil is an accomplished racer with some professional races back in the day. These Pink Bike CONTENT CREATORS are absolutely no different from the rest of MTB content creators. Perhaps they have a god complex from being the number 1 media source but I would much rather watch a Skills with Phil episode or a Seth’s Bike Hacks episode than anything Pink Bike
We need people to speak out and thank you Ryan for doing exactly that. I see a lot of bad content from them, specially PB Academy and now this.. it seems like wrong people are in wrong places. MTB community is all about supporting and cheering to be better self and have as much fun as possible.
Has anyone commenting actually listened to the podcast? This video is a classic example of people getting indignant over 2 small out of context quotes.
I have a feeling Ryan knows exactly what he's doing here.
ESPECIALLY when they share people’s fails. They put out weekly videos of amateurs recording themselves!
Wow I always liked Henry on GMBN and was actually disappointed to see him go. What a Dick thing for him to say, lost respect for him big style
I like to research places I'm going to visit for the first time. I like it when somebody says where to park, how long it should take, what to watch out for, which direction to go, etc. I also learned long ago that one's level of proficiency with a camera and editing software does not equate with their level of skill or knowledge of mountain biking. I've sat through plenty of well-lit and beautifully shot videos where the person didn't know what he was talking about. I've also watched great content from a guy who really knows his stuff but looks like he's being held hostage and talking into a cell phone with a single light bulb hanging over his head.
YT is for everyone. Post it up BABY!!!!
Henry and Mike don't even ride very well.
I like Pinkbike channel, as well as yours and many others I'm subscribed to. I agree on those points you express, however... I usually take podcast talking with a grain of salt. I won't (and I don't think they expect I do) stop watching whichever content channel I like because of those podcast conversations.
I couldn't name 5 pro's but I could name 50+ MTB content creators easy. They provide entertainment, information, comedy and great story telling in their videos.
Pro's can ride great yes but can they tell a great, entertaining story? In most cases the answer is no.
I was a PB mod for many years...I walked away because it was progressively drifting further and further up its own ass. Well researched and written articles (sometimes including exclusive interviews or news) by mere mortals would be ignored while the same unresearched, 2 paragraph "article" from one of the faves would be published.
The whole premise of the site was Share The Ride. That got lost along the way.
I got back into mountain biking after 20 years off (was one of the early mountain bikers in my area in the 90s) BECAUSE of UA-cam channels like yours, Seths, Alexs and a couple other of the channels that kept it approachable, positive and full of stoke. I have Zero interest in ever riding with any of the Pinkbike crew, but would gladly ride with any one of the content creators who is positive and inclusive.
Can't agree more! I'm 62, previously a cancer patient, and here because I love mountainbiking and the entire community around it. The fact that there are so many content creators on all levels, having interesting stories to tell (many of them even commenting here) gives me the the inspiration to keep on biking for as long as my body will let me. That elitism and snobbery just makes me wanna laugh. They are just plain and simply wrong. Keep on doing what you do.
Glad you are still with us.
Pinkbike has gone otb these days anyways
It sounds like you’ve just become offended by something that doesn’t necessarily need to be viewed as such, it was clear to me that Henry’s quotes were simply ironising a *segment* of the MTB content culture but you’ve applied it as a sweeping statement, ergo taking offence. Your closeness to the subject matter is a double edged sword because while it gives you unique and credible insights, it also increases your risk of personalising everything (such as taking offence where it shouldn’t bother you)
For example,, how many opinions (and generalised jokes) have you given on the likes of tech, products, services (even away from bikes) - restaurants, flights, taxis, music, etc.
Also - it’s the opinions of some individuals only, not PinkBike as an organisation.
Nailed it Ryan! Case in point, before riding Hiline in Sedona I watched videos of riders doing it carefully and slowly. That prepared me well enough to clear most of the big features. In comparison, Nate Hills video made it look like a green trail. Thank you for standing by smaller content creators. We all appreciate you!
Thank you for speaking about this. As someone who loves making videos, i often feel when people see me out filming, that theyre judging me becuase im just an average rider filming myelf and that you need to be a pro in order for it to be cool. We all just do this becuse we love it, no need to ruin anybodys fun pinkbike
100% well said.
Watching this video and reading these comments has been such a welcome dose of positivity and encouragement this small creator needed. This is why I love this community!
Weird, ‘cause Pink Bike also produces and releases the same level of content to…checks watch history…ah, yes…UA-cam. A little hypocritical and generally alienating to the general MTB public who consume this content.
Pinkbike can go a do one after this podcast. That's exactly what I do when i do research on the trails I want to ride. I look for content from smaller channels and ideally on the same or similar riding level to myself. I am not interested how "Remi" or equivalent can wizz through that trail because as you mentioned I am not going to be able to ride it on that level. And pinkbike sorry I don't create good enough content in your eyes. I am really hurt 🤣. God syndrome?
3:19 I definitely agree - people who may not be riding blacks or double blacks still have people who watch it, and for a reason. There's more of a community aspect and people still connect in the comments and can learn from each other or share from experiences. Most people can relate to that a lot better than just some pro rider backflipping a jump for the 200th time.
I often just like looking at the nature and scenery
