Great video, really clear and unbiased. Just a note from my experience: I've been using the 990 pros for years and when they're new the top end does sound too bright. After they've broken in the bottom end gets deeper and more beautiful and the top end calms down and becomes really smooth. It's not just my ears adjusting either as I've compared my pair to a mates new 990 pro and it reminded me of how mine sounded for the first month after I bought them. I love these headphones and will probably replace them with the same model as long as Beyer are still making them.
For me finding out about AutoEQ and their profiles was a godsend. I could not use my 990 pro's in the mornings prior, it was just too "sharp" sounding.
@@Zombie101 It's basically an equalizer program with preset profiles for just about any headphones you can think of. I would look at a tutorial so you can set it up proper.

The only issue I ran into was transposing the eq settings into Spotify, Spotify eq won't let me see what number each frequency hz in db is at
Thanks for the comparison! I'm a happy owner of 990 Pros (I have 2 of them) and even knowing they are bright and bassy, I love them. They simply sound as I want. The problem is when I use them for reference, I'm always a little muffled, but if you are really used to listen to them... you can avoid the "issue" and take them as reference. I think is all about the way you are used to listen you music. Bad speakers, cheap headphones... if they are your reference for listening to music, they are your reference.
Sonarworks SoundId Reference is a must have to get the maximum from your gear. I use SoundId Reference with my DT 770 Pro which has about the same extremes as the DT 990 Pro and it's really good for neutral sound, even when you will change your headphone later on.
After having had several Sennheiser headphones with my first one being the famous HD 414 (long ago) I got tired of the Sennheisers because their cables often break, especially the tiny plugs are awful. In the end I came down to the point to say they sound dull somehow and I wanted to purchase a neutral and clean sounding headphone of another brand. Two years after intensive studies and comparison of technical features ago I bought a Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X and was stunned regarding the super clear sound even revealing the growling of deep bass response in HighRes records and old songs of mine that I had missed with any other headphone I had used. They are a joy on the ear and you can wear them for 6 hours in a row without taking them off. Perfect for the use in long studio sessions. I would certainly recommend to test these for your mixing sessions if you cannot use a speaker system, for example during night hours. On the other hand I am convinced that for mixing and mastering a decent set of loudspeakers (with subwoofer) should be applied. I would not work with headphones all the time. It may still lead you to wrong decision-making. But in general, these DT900 ProX will not disappoint you. (/from Germany)
Great review! I have both and find your conclusions to be spot on. Even with the Sonarworks correction I still find I need to roll off a just a tad of high end on the 250 ohm pros.

I have the 990s and just bought the 900 x pros. I like the 990s alot but the plastic piece by the ear cups broke. These look much sturdier so hopefully they last longer than 11 months like my 990s.
I had the same issue with my 990s. I had mine for 3 years when the plastic piece snapped. I found some guy that makes 3D printed replacements. That lasted another year before it broke this week. I love the headphones but am hesitant to spend that kind of money on something that could break again. I might give the Xs a try.
I have both the 990s and the 900x. The difference to me is night and day. The technology being used, the new driver in the 900x is somehow able to create a crystal clear separation of instrumentation and sounds. The 990s did not seem to do that as well in my ears. The bass is absolutely more powerful in the 900x, in a way because it's tighter and punchier, but also allows the mids/highs to still remain clear even if a low end frequency is happening. There are some songs I feel like I'm hearing for the first time again with these. I listened to Rufus Du Sol - "Innerbloom" and I had to sit down and just stop what I was doing, the track was so immersive and the soundstage entirely different to what I am used to compared to even my sennheisers. I keep being surprised because the 900x are just so damn clear- without being harsh like the 990s. I'm a producer/musician and have overly analytical ears already, but these have allowed me to use them for mixing AND for just listening to music/gaming in a way that's fun again. The 990s don't have the ability to get this loud either without an amp, so being able to listen to high quality tracks on my phone with this kind of clarity is new to me- and there is zero distortion with the new 45 drivers in the 900x. They haven't stopped impressing me and I have a lot of headphones lol. @@Hijynx87
In my 900 Pro X, the plug of the three-pin cable that you enter into the left shell of the headset is very difficult to remove, I have to force a lot, as if the plug had become welded !, while on the contrary this three-pin cable enter easily. it's when I want to unplug it that it's very-very-very difficult, even if I press the little button provided to release the jack. Has anyone experienced the same thing ?
Just got the DT 900 Pro X. All I can say is I love how they sound and they're a clear improvement over past Beyer headphones IMO. I used to own DT880 Pros the 250 ohm version and they were very flat but always came a little bright in the treble and slightly weak in the bass. These improve upon both as well as the mid range too. The Stellar.45 driver and removable cable sold me on the DT900 Pro X and I couldn't be happier with how they delivered. I prefer these over my Sennheiser HD600s for 90% of music I listen to. Although the HD600s have a very inviting midrange they lack good subbass and are a little subdued up top as well.
I want to ask if you are using an amp? It seems like you don't, hence why I ask. I had the DT990 and heared the DT880 Pro and flat with weak bass is nothing I heared. When it comes to the DT 900 Pro X, I am really not a fan. After testing and comparing it to others they seem unfinished. The Soundstage is alright, sound is a bit dark and the Bass seem kind of muddy with no Potential since they distort instantly. While the DT 900 Pro X should only be ran via an PC DAC in my opinion the DT 990 just opens, when hooked up to a good amp. I would even say my Logitech G Pro X after AutoEQ with RTings HMS Harman Curve sound way better than those DT 900 Pro X, since hooking an AMP to it literally makes worse. If you think I'm trolling... I'm not, just try it out yourself :) Edit: I've got the DT 900 pro X next to me , my DT 990 edition are dead, also have here the Sennheiser 560s, but I'm sending them back, waste of money, boring with too much clarity, my good amp and autoEQ can't save em, also the clamp force could crush a mellon for sure. Legit using the Logitech G Pro X as my main headphone... which is sad, I just wanted a portable headset that sound alright for 60€ and got a headphone that put my DT 900 Pro X to shame after hooking it up to an Pioneer AMP with an AutoEQ.

Confused how you could hear distortion on a headphone that's designed to crank out louder than past Beyerdynamic headphones and still keep lower distortion than the DT880 or 990 at higher volumes. I'm using a Metrum Amethyst DAC/Amp combo. It's about 1200 Euros so no it's not a cheap source I'm using. These IMO are the best headphones under $500, surprised you hear them differently as I find these to sound better than my Sennheiser HD600s I also own.

Not to talk them bad, but from what I've tested the iFi Zen Dac V2 had amazing sound and with the "True Bass" feature the DT 900 Pro X comlettly distorted at low volume levels even. Here running my Pioneer A-10-K and I can tell you the DT 900 Pro X suffer and don't like Amplifiers, especially analog which boosts Pre-Amp Bass/Treble, meaning aslong as the Drivers play alone you can get Bass/Treble without muddling sound or even changing the EQ. It's sad to see the DT 900 Pro X fail this hard, tested 2 actually to exclude a default. Don't get me wrong, but under 500$ These headphones don't even compete with 50$ Headphones. !My Opinion! The DT 900 Pro X are one if not the worst Beyerdynamic headphones considering the Price... Yes Beyer peak is gone, so is the Clarity, yes bass is boosted, but muddled and just sounds wrong. Also Sennheiser are always a preference, since their clarity is nearly unbeatable and with the 560s even too much, letting you hear detail in music where they weren't recorded right, meaning half your playlist sounds bad all of the sudden. When it comes to fun, Sennheiser are not my type. DT 990 with a good AMP are seriously good. Also best headphone under 500$? Have you really FORGOTTEN the DT1990 under 500$? The DT 1990 Pro are one of the MOST IMPRESSIVE Open Back I could hear with my Amplifier, their Brightness is too high, but EQ solves that issue. They obliterate the DT 900 Pro X. Also I just gave the 900 Pro X yesterday back, since I don't like em (just like the 560s). I will definitely get the DT 1990 Pro now, since they are incredible. @@Alexdbre You're mistaken if you think the Metrum Amethyst DAC is a typical simple USB DAC. It is completely proprietary technology unlike most DACs using disrete R-2R DACs running at 24-bit resolution. Your opinion that the DT900 Pro X are one of the worst headphones you've ever heard and sound worse than $50 headphones sounds very suspect if you think the DT990s sound better. Most people including myself think the DT990s have very sibilant highs and treble unless ran though and EQ. Out of the box these DT 900 Pro X can get louder without muddying up any clarity than past iterations of Beyer headphones due to the new Steller.45 driver they developed for higher SPL and lower distortion. So everything you're saying is contrary to most people's opinions. That's why I simply don't understand if it's your setup or if you have a faulty pair of headphones.

im not sure if i want the 990 Pro or the 900 Pro X. i dont have an amplifier, and wanted to know what amplifier is good if i wanted to get the 250 ohm 990 pro and if i even needed one if i got the 45 ohm 900 pro x. its mainly gonne be used for gaming, watching yt and listening to music. what would you recomment for me: the 990 pro 80 ohm, 990 pro 250 ohm or the 900 pro x. and what amplifier would you recomment (if needed)
Because they are 48Ohms, DT 900 Pro X don't need any dedicated headphone amp. However, I've heard that the sound quality may slightly improve with an amp, too. The DT 900 Pro, on the other hand, need a dedicated headphone amp.
I bought 990 pro and I love it .Dont expect strong bass without a headphone amplifier and dont expect it on bad recordings as well . Great headphone, great transparency , I really love them .
Hello Geoff, since this video, Beyerdynamic has release a new model, the DT 1990 Pro MKII. Looking at the technical data I can't see why the new model is twice the price. Besides little differences of the frequency curve, impedance (30 vs 250 vs 48, if I got it right) and SPL I struggle to make a choice. It would be very helpful if you could talk about the new model vs old one and talk about the drivers (Tesla.45, STELLAR.45 and Tesla Neodymium). Thanks in advance. Best regards
You cannot imagine how much I'm confused about this comparison! Especially when it comes to choosing between dt 880 (all editions) and dt 700/900 pro x and dt 770 pro. I used to use Sennheiser hd 380 pro for my video editing and video sound mixing and I was satisfied with the flatness and unbiased sound (after a while I realized that it was not as unbiased as I thought!) so I decided to switch to a new headphone for my editing (consistent bass and a bit warm, bright at mids and not sharp or airy at treble) and now this is my big question: what is the right pick under 350$ ?
In my Honest opinion, I prefer Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro vs Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro x model, the sound quality once carefully adjusted with the expensive Headphone Amp i use made a huge difference and yes any Headphone amp will improve the sound quality by quite a bit mine was night/day difference, now to clarify on the volume on these headphones they can get really loud so be careful when listening to videos of any kind or just watching movies they sound amazing when to listening to music and the current price point with DT 990 pro is a lot more budget-friendly then the DT 990 Pro X, the DT 990 pro are definitely budget worthy headphones, and now for comfort rating, they do come with large ear cups with plenty of memory foam padding which is big plus for comfort, when brand new they do feel a bit tight on the head my rating overall is 10/10 for comfort and the sound quality is 10/10, these are very nice headphones for the price.

Hello! I have a question regarding headphone impedance. I own the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X, which has an impedance of 48 ohms. I'm considering purchasing the Audient iD4 interface, which has a headphone impedance of 600 ohms. I've heard that using higher impedance headphone amps with lower impedance headphones can affect frequency response and potentially damage the drivers. Can you clarify if this will be an issue, or if it's safe to use the headphones with the interface? Thanks in advance!
It doesn't damage the driver but headphones will sound bassy and muffled. First hand experience. I returned the audient and ended up with cheaper focusrite. You might look into SSL 2+
Dt990 is the best but the treble is way to sharp and spikey when you first get them but after a month or 2 of use as the pads flatten they sound better

Thanks for the review. I guess the price has changed since this video was created? 900 X is significantly more expensive than 990 pro. So I would expect 900 X to be better. But this video at least let me know that the difference may not be as big as the cost.
We obviously did not listen to the same video 😀. I find that this analysis shows on the contrary quite significant differences between the regular Pro and the Pro X: the more neutral sound of the X (the high sounds are brighter or dry in the Pro), the smoother bass of the X (while they are modified to be a bit prettied up in the Pro), the heavier weight of the "Pro X" but the cables that plug and unplug in the X (better long term investment) and which I understand come in duplicate (coiled and in add also the rights), the ear pads - which are much easier to install in the X, Etc. Personally I find the 990 Pro X much more beautiful (it's a matter of taste) and several reviewers have testified to the fact that the "regular" Pro have a part that broke after some time because they are only plastic.
@@ManchesterMusic dt990 is better, also dt990 really changes in sound over time, its actually a much more smooth flat sounding headphone besides the bass and after you wear them for a long time, the burn in on them is insane and by burn I’m referring to the pads flattening but it’s very interesting how the sound changes and they’re actually much better burned in, in fact theirs actually treble spikes when you first get them, there’s measurements of burned in and non burned in pads on oratory grapher also my settings on their is i checkmarked custom match and diffuse field
I have the 880 which were recommended for producing / mixing / mastering as they were more flat. I really like them but I make house and techno and they just seem to have very little bass or sub at all to the point where I can't tell what's going on down there. I could try sonarworks but thinking of the 900 pro x if they are any good for bass or maybe the 990 pro.
Forget about these two models, which I do own, go straight for the DT 1990's. I wish I had saved up for the DT 1990's initially because all the other Beyer's that I own have gone into storage and two of them have been gifted to other people. Seriously, the DT 1990's with the Tesla drivers are far superior than the dynamic drivers.

Hi i was searching for some headphones for gaming (i play a game that is extremely based on sound). Have to understand exactly from what position comes the sound and hear my enemy before he notice me. So i want the type of headphones wich, if there's a enemy, that i'm supposed to hear even with the lowest sound, unexpected position or the furthest. I don't know if i'm well explained so here's an example. I'm with my friends playing and somebody says "there's an enemy" by hearing his footsteps or whatheaver it is and in my head i'm like "what? I didn't hear nothing". This often happen :/ Overall i'd like the headphones i can hear all the sounds i possibly hear with and if a sound comes from the game i have to hear it.
Preamp? You mean analog Amplifier? No. They have 50ohms and the drivers are not suited for good AMPs. I have them (Pro X) with a pioneer amp (A-10-K) and they sound not good at all. Muddy/Dark and the bass distorts.
I found exactly the same with 990s. Lovely for listening to music, but I couldn't mix with them. They're not neutral. I've had far more success with 770s and 880s for mixing. From you review I might replace my broken 990s with those 900s

I was wondering, Im an avid gamer and creator. I make content and love listening to music, Im not very savvy when it comes to audio mixing but I love having precise and quality audio with my headsets for gaming and music. What would be better for me to get? I don't think I would be able to correct the audio myself, so the question I am asking without Tweaking the audio what would be better out of box for gaming and for music? Also is there any application I can download onto my pc that would make Audio ever more precise and quality over just regular gaming headsets. Thank you I appreciate the help!

The more ohms the more power needed. If you have an interface like a Scarlett that should do just fine. Depending on what you want you may want a headphone amp. Lower ohms require less power so plugging into a laptop will do just fine
except they don't really sound anything like the 900x's. I have both and the 900x is a totally different feel. I can't describe how much cleaner and tighter the bass is compared to the 990's, as well the treble difference. Sonically the 990s higher frequencies sounded thin and harsh to me, where on the 900x- clear defined sparkle, no harshness. it's night and day difference to my ears.
@@Uuuuyyyyuuu Easy pad swap fixed the treble of of DT 990 Pro. Sonically, 900 Pro X sounds muffled, they do have better bass but 990 Pro is still more detailed and have better sound-stage and separation. The thing is Beyerdynamic used acoustic disc in 900 pro X to tame the high frequencies which muffles the sound as well. I get your POV because 990 Pro are 250 ohms and people fail to power them properly. Something like FiiO k7 is good pairing with 990 Pro, bass becomes tighter, soundstage opens up and the sound comes alive and more dynamic
I've got a question for you dude! Not sure if you can help but considering one of these two for gaming as I already have a really good mic and gaming headsets arnt actually that good when it comes to sound. My question is.. which ones are better?
Question. I have both and my biggest issue is the lack of bass in the X, especially with voices. James Earl Jones doesn't sound so special anymore lol. Is it possible to apply EQ to a pair of headphones that are going through a GoXLR? Or better yet, is it possible to permanently change the EQ of headphones regardless of device it's plugged into? Hey there. Sorry to hear about the lack of low end. There’s a few ways to address this. I’m going to be speaking from the perspective of a Mac user. If you’re listening to music from Apple you can go to Apple Music and set an eq curve from the settings. If you’re trying to change the EQ on regular sound from say, a UA-cam video it’s a little trickier. A good application to use would be AudioHijack from Rogue Amoeba. You can use audio plugins, like your favourite EQ, to affect the output of sound. You can technically use any plugin like RX mouth declick if you’re sensitive to mouth clicks and pops from videos and podcasts you listen to on your computer.
@@ivanminic9186 the 900s are relatively flat compared to its predecessor. Mid bass is present but it's missing sub bass, which was surprisingly prominent on the 990s (being open back and all).

Based on this review and what I’ve seen, the 990s are still a better pick for sound. Factor in that the price is almost half of the 900s, it just isn’t enough to justify the switch
@@kingyasofficial Interesting also considering your style. Mine is metal and the low end just has to be ultra tight and flat because it has a lot of detail. Which register did you find most troublesome?
The x did sound punchier and better to me..just tried both these out...the 880 and 880 pro also sounded very nice.. lots of low end...almost sounded like consumer headphones... the 990 pro sounded the least punch and least present to me...

I bought myself a high end wired gaming headset from steelseries, the arctis pro. But now that I have the 900 Pro X I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!! Oh man i thought specific gaming headsets were good for games but maaaan this is what I am talkin about, this headset is a gods gift
I have the same with game dac in a beyerdynamic sack that came with my 990pros. Yep haven’t listened to them since, but audeze gaming headsets are amazing. I do have a soundblaster g6 and an itch for a new headphone though, possibly a new dac/amp.

In my opinion, DT 990 pro x + Sound id reference correction curve is the best solution for moderate budget mixing and mastering sessions. Having said that, the results are surprising as results translates fairly well on other systems. This makes DT 990 pro x best value for money in this category. Thank you once again for this video.
What I found to be quite important ist the break in time. My DT 990 Pro definitely sound smoother after - let's say 20hrs - playing time. The hyped high end is gone.

I'm a happy owner of 990 Pros (I have 2 of them) and even knowing they are bright and bassy, I love them. They simply sound as I want. The problem is when I use them for reference, I'm always a little muffled, but if you are really used to listen to them... you can avoid the "issue" and take them as reference.
I think is all about the way you are used to listen you music. Bad speakers, cheap headphones... if they are your reference for listening to music, they are your reference.

Sonarworks SoundId Reference is a must have to get the maximum from your gear.
I use SoundId Reference with my DT 770 Pro which has about the same extremes as the DT 990 Pro and it's really good for neutral sound, even when you will change your headphone later on.

After having had several Sennheiser headphones with my first one being the famous HD 414 (long ago) I got tired of the Sennheisers because their cables often break, especially the tiny plugs are awful. In the end I came down to the point to say they sound dull somehow and I wanted to purchase a neutral and clean sounding headphone of another brand. Two years after intensive studies and comparison of technical features ago I bought a Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X and was stunned regarding the super clear sound even revealing the growling of deep bass response in HighRes records and old songs of mine that I had missed with any other headphone I had used. They are a joy on the ear and you can wear them for 6 hours in a row without taking them off. Perfect for the use in long studio sessions. I would certainly recommend to test these for your mixing sessions if you cannot use a speaker system, for example during night hours. On the other hand I am convinced that for mixing and mastering a decent set of loudspeakers (with subwoofer) should be applied. I would not work with headphones all the time. It may still lead you to wrong decision-making. But in general, these DT900 ProX will not disappoint you. (/from Germany)

Great review! I have both and find your conclusions to be spot on. Even with the Sonarworks correction I still find I need to roll off a just a tad of high end on the 250 ohm pros.

I have the 990s and just bought the 900 x pros. I like the 990s alot but the plastic piece by the ear cups broke. These look much sturdier so hopefully they last longer than 11 months like my 990s.
I had the same issue with my 990s. I had mine for 3 years when the plastic piece snapped. I found some guy that makes 3D printed replacements. That lasted another year before it broke this week. I love the headphones but am hesitant to spend that kind of money on something that could break again. I might give the Xs a try.

I have both the 990s and the 900x. The difference to me is night and day. The technology being used, the new driver in the 900x is somehow able to create a crystal clear separation of instrumentation and sounds.
The 990s did not seem to do that as well in my ears. The bass is absolutely more powerful in the 900x, in a way because it's tighter and punchier, but also allows the mids/highs to still remain clear even if a low end frequency is happening. There are some songs I feel like I'm hearing for the first time again with these. I listened to Rufus Du Sol - "Innerbloom" and I had to sit down and just stop what I was doing, the track was so immersive and the soundstage entirely different to what I am used to compared to even my sennheisers. I keep being surprised because the 900x are just so damn clear- without being harsh like the 990s.
I'm a producer/musician and have overly analytical ears already, but these have allowed me to use them for mixing AND for just listening to music/gaming in a way that's fun again. The 990s don't have the ability to get this loud either without an amp, so being able to listen to high quality tracks on my phone with this kind of clarity is new to me- and there is zero distortion with the new 45 drivers in the 900x. They haven't stopped impressing me and I have a lot of headphones lol. @@Hijynx87

In my 900 Pro X, the plug of the three-pin cable that you enter into the left shell of the headset is very difficult to remove, I have to force a lot, as if the plug had become welded !, while on the contrary this three-pin cable enter easily. it's when I want to unplug it that it's very-very-very difficult, even if I press the little button provided to release the jack. Has anyone experienced the same thing ?
Just got the DT 900 Pro X. All I can say is I love how they sound and they're a clear improvement over past Beyer headphones IMO. I used to own DT880 Pros the 250 ohm version and they were very flat but always came a little bright in the treble and slightly weak in the bass. These improve upon both as well as the mid range too. The Stellar.45 driver and removable cable sold me on the DT900 Pro X and I couldn't be happier with how they delivered. I prefer these over my Sennheiser HD600s for 90% of music I listen to. Although the HD600s have a very inviting midrange they lack good subbass and are a little subdued up top as well.
I want to ask if you are using an amp? It seems like you don't, hence why I ask. I had the DT990 and heared the DT880 Pro and flat with weak bass is nothing I heared. When it comes to the DT 900 Pro X, I am really not a fan. After testing and comparing it to others they seem unfinished. The Soundstage is alright, sound is a bit dark and the Bass seem kind of muddy with no Potential since they distort instantly. While the DT 900 Pro X should only be ran via an PC DAC in my opinion the DT 990 just opens, when hooked up to a good amp. I would even say my Logitech G Pro X after AutoEQ with RTings HMS Harman Curve sound way better than those DT 900 Pro X, since hooking an AMP to it literally makes worse.
If you think I'm trolling... I'm not, just try it out yourself :)
Edit: I've got the DT 900 pro X next to me , my DT 990 edition are dead, also have here the Sennheiser 560s, but I'm sending them back, waste of money, boring with too much clarity, my good amp and autoEQ can't save em, also the clamp force could crush a mellon for sure. Legit using the Logitech G Pro X as my main headphone... which is sad, I just wanted a portable headset that sound alright for 60€ and got a headphone that put my DT 900 Pro X to shame after hooking it up to an Pioneer AMP with an AutoEQ.

Confused how you could hear distortion on a headphone that's designed to crank out louder than past Beyerdynamic headphones and still keep lower distortion than the DT880 or 990 at higher volumes. I'm using a Metrum Amethyst DAC/Amp combo. It's about 1200 Euros so no it's not a cheap source I'm using. These IMO are the best headphones under $500, surprised you hear them differently as I find these to sound better than my Sennheiser HD600s I also own.

Not to talk them bad, but from what I've tested the iFi Zen Dac V2 had amazing sound and with the "True Bass" feature the DT 900 Pro X comlettly distorted at low volume levels even. Here running my Pioneer A-10-K and I can tell you the DT 900 Pro X suffer and don't like Amplifiers, especially analog which boosts Pre-Amp Bass/Treble, meaning aslong as the Drivers play alone you can get Bass/Treble without muddling sound or even changing the EQ. It's sad to see the DT 900 Pro X fail this hard, tested 2 actually to exclude a default. Don't get me wrong, but under 500$ These headphones don't even compete with 50$ Headphones. !My Opinion! The DT 900 Pro X are one if not the worst Beyerdynamic headphones considering the Price... Yes Beyer peak is gone, so is the Clarity, yes bass is boosted, but muddled and just sounds wrong. Also Sennheiser are always a preference, since their clarity is nearly unbeatable and with the 560s even too much, letting you hear detail in music where they weren't recorded right, meaning half your playlist sounds bad all of the sudden. When it comes to fun, Sennheiser are not my type. DT 990 with a good AMP are seriously good.
Also best headphone under 500$? Have you really FORGOTTEN the DT1990 under 500$? The DT 1990 Pro are one of the MOST IMPRESSIVE Open Back I could hear with my Amplifier, their Brightness is too high, but EQ solves that issue. They obliterate the DT 900 Pro X. Also I just gave the 900 Pro X yesterday back, since I don't like em (just like the 560s). I will definitely get the DT 1990 Pro now, since they are incredible. @@Alexdbre You're mistaken if you think the Metrum Amethyst DAC is a typical simple USB DAC. It is completely proprietary technology unlike most DACs using disrete R-2R DACs running at 24-bit resolution. Your opinion that the DT900 Pro X are one of the worst headphones you've ever heard and sound worse than $50 headphones sounds very suspect if you think the DT990s sound better. Most people including myself think the DT990s have very sibilant highs and treble unless ran though and EQ. Out of the box these DT 900 Pro X can get louder without muddying up any clarity than past iterations of Beyer headphones due to the new Steller.45 driver they developed for higher SPL and lower distortion. So everything you're saying is contrary to most people's opinions. That's why I simply don't understand if it's your setup or if you have a faulty pair of headphones.

Because they are 48Ohms, DT 900 Pro X don't need any dedicated headphone amp. However, I've heard that the sound quality may slightly improve with an amp, too. The DT 900 Pro, on the other hand, need a dedicated headphone amp.

Hello Geoff, since this video, Beyerdynamic has release a new model, the DT 1990 Pro MKII. Looking at the technical data I can't see why the new model is twice the price. Besides little differences of the frequency curve, impedance (30 vs 250 vs 48, if I got it right) and SPL I struggle to make a choice. It would be very helpful if you could talk about the new model vs old one and talk about the drivers (Tesla.45, STELLAR.45 and Tesla Neodymium). Thanks in advance. Best regards
You cannot imagine how much I'm confused about this comparison! Especially when it comes to choosing between dt 880 (all editions) and dt 700/900 pro x and dt 770 pro. I used to use Sennheiser hd 380 pro for my video editing and video sound mixing and I was satisfied with the flatness and unbiased sound (after a while I realized that it was not as unbiased as I thought!) so I decided to switch to a new headphone for my editing (consistent bass and a bit warm, bright at mids and not sharp or airy at treble) and now this is my big question: what is the right pick under 350$ ?

In my Honest opinion, I prefer Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro vs Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro x model, the sound quality once carefully adjusted with the expensive Headphone Amp i use made a huge difference and yes any Headphone amp will improve the sound quality by quite a bit mine was night/day difference, now to clarify on the volume on these headphones they can get really loud so be careful when listening to videos of any kind or just watching movies they sound amazing when to listening to music and the current price point with DT 990 pro is a lot more budget-friendly then the DT 990 Pro X, the DT 990 pro are definitely budget worthy headphones, and now for comfort rating, they do come with large ear cups with plenty of memory foam padding which is big plus for comfort, when brand new they do feel a bit tight on the head my rating overall is 10/10 for comfort and the sound quality is 10/10, these are very nice headphones for the price.

Hello! I have a question regarding headphone impedance. I own the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X, which has an impedance of 48 ohms. I'm considering purchasing the Audient iD4 interface, which has a headphone impedance of 600 ohms. I've heard that using higher impedance headphone amps with lower impedance headphones can affect frequency response and potentially damage the drivers. Can you clarify if this will be an issue, or if it's safe to use the headphones with the interface?

It doesn't damage the driver but headphones will sound bassy and muffled. First hand experience. I returned the audient and ended up with cheaper focusrite. You might look into SSL 2+

We obviously did not listen to the same video 😀. I find that this analysis shows on the contrary quite significant differences between the regular Pro and the Pro X: the more neutral sound of the X (the high sounds are brighter or dry in the Pro), the smoother bass of the X (while they are modified to be a bit prettied up in the Pro), the heavier weight of the "Pro X" but the cables that plug and unplug in the X (better long term investment) and which I understand come in duplicate (coiled and in add also the rights), the ear pads - which are much easier to install in the X, Etc. Personally I find the 990 Pro X much more beautiful (it's a matter of taste) and several reviewers have testified to the fact that the "regular" Pro have a part that broke after some time because they are only plastic.
Buy 990 pro and Swap pads, buy something which tame the treble

@@ManchesterMusic dt990 is better, also dt990 really changes in sound over time, its actually a much more smooth flat sounding headphone besides the bass and after you wear them for a long time, the burn in on them is insane and by burn I’m referring to the pads flattening but it’s very interesting how the sound changes and they’re actually much better burned in, in fact theirs actually treble spikes when you first get them, there’s measurements of burned in and non burned in pads on oratory grapher also my settings on their is i checkmarked custom match and diffuse field

I have the 880 which were recommended for producing / mixing / mastering as they were more flat. I really like them but I make house and techno and they just seem to have very little bass or sub at all to the point where I can't tell what's going on down there. I could try sonarworks but thinking of the 900 pro x if they are any good for bass or maybe the 990 pro.
Forget about these two models, which I do own, go straight for the DT 1990's. I wish I had saved up for the DT 1990's initially because all the other Beyer's that I own have gone into storage and two of them have been gifted to other people. Seriously, the DT 1990's with the Tesla drivers are far superior than the dynamic drivers.

Hi i was searching for some headphones for gaming (i play a game that is extremely based on sound). Have to understand exactly from what position comes the sound and hear my enemy before he notice me. So i want the type of headphones wich, if there's a enemy, that i'm supposed to hear even with the lowest sound, unexpected position or the furthest.
I don't know if i'm well explained so here's an example.
I'm with my friends playing and somebody says "there's an enemy" by hearing his footsteps or whatheaver it is and in my head i'm like "what? I didn't hear nothing". This often happen :/
Overall i'd like the headphones i can hear all the sounds i possibly hear with and if a sound comes from the game i have to hear it.

Preamp? You mean analog Amplifier? No. They have 50ohms and the drivers are not suited for good AMPs. I have them (Pro X) with a pioneer amp (A-10-K) and they sound not good at all. Muddy/Dark and the bass distorts.

I found exactly the same with 990s. Lovely for listening to music, but I couldn't mix with them. They're not neutral. I've had far more success with 770s and 880s for mixing.

I make content and love listening to music, Im not very savvy when it comes to audio mixing but I love having precise and quality audio with my headsets for gaming and music. What would be better for me to get? The more ohms the more power needed. If you have an interface like a Scarlett that should do just fine. Depending on what you want you may want a headphone amp. Lower ohms require less power so plugging into a laptop will do just fine

except they don't really sound anything like the 900x's. I have both and the 900x is a totally different feel. I can't describe how much cleaner and tighter the bass is compared to the 990's, as well the treble difference. Sonically the 990s higher frequencies sounded thin and harsh to me, where on the 900x- clear defined sparkle, no harshness. it's night and day difference to my ears.

Sonically, 900 Pro X sounds muffled, they do have better bass but 990 Pro is still more detailed and have better sound-stage and separation. The thing is Beyerdynamic used acoustic disc in 900 pro X to tame the high frequencies which muffles the sound as well. I get your POV because 990 Pro are 250 ohms and people fail to power them properly. Something like FiiO k7 is good pairing with 990 Pro, bass becomes tighter, soundstage opens up and the sound comes alive and more dynamic

Hey there. Sorry to hear about the lack of low end. There’s a few ways to address this. I’m going to be speaking from the perspective of a Mac user. If you’re listening to music from Apple you can go to Apple Music and set an eq curve from the settings. If you’re trying to change the EQ on regular sound from say, a UA-cam video it’s a little trickier. A good application to use would be AudioHijack from Rogue Amoeba. You can use audio plugins, like your favourite EQ, to affect the output of sound. You can technically use any plugin like RX mouth declick if you’re sensitive to mouth clicks and pops from videos and podcasts you listen to on your computer.

@@ivanminic9186 the 900s are relatively flat compared to its predecessor. Mid bass is present but it's missing sub bass, which was surprisingly prominent on the 990s (being open back and all).
Hey man, would you recommend these 900 pro x or the 990 250 ohm? Assuming im using for gaming mainly? Is the 900s are better, are they worth the price jump?
they’re both “Pro’s”. it would have been cool if you’d differentiated between the two by calling them the 900’s and the 990’s
They're both 990's. He's using 'Pro' and 'X' to differentiate them.
Based on this review and what I’ve seen, the 990s are still a better pick for sound. Factor in that the price is almost half of the 900s, it just isn’t enough to justify the switch

900 pro x sounds better and 990 pro only comes in 250 ohm so you need a good amp so they cost the same

Where I am located those are three times more expensive though.

@@kingyasofficial Interesting also considering your style. Mine is metal and the low end just has to be ultra tight and flat because it has a lot of detail. Which register did you find most troublesome?

The x did sound punchier and better to me..just tried both these out...the 880 and 880 pro also sounded very nice.. lots of low end...almost sounded like consumer headphones... the 990 pro sounded the least punch and least present to me...
880 are bright ass headphones. 990 are much better. Just saying!

I bought myself a high end wired gaming headset from steelseries, the arctis pro. But now that I have the 900 Pro X I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!! Oh man i thought specific gaming headsets were good for games but maaaan this is what I am talkin about, this headset is a gods gift
I have the same with game dac in a beyerdynamic sack that came with my 990pros. Yep haven’t listened to them since, but audeze gaming headsets are amazing. I do have a soundblaster g6 and an itch for a new headphone though, possibly a new dac/amp.

In my opion, I couldn't agree with you anymore.
In my opinion, DT 990 pro x + Sound id reference correction curve is the best solution for moderate budget mixing and mastering sessions. Having said that, the results are surprising as results translates fairly well on other systems.
This makes DT 990 pro x best value for money in this category.

The gossip, that the newer DT900 not same the older and now the pro X the similar:-). Higher price same quality...
What I found to be quite important ist the break in time. My DT 990 Pro definitely sound smoother after - let's say 20hrs - playing time. The hyped high end is gone.
