Student Attacked In Dorm Hallway

A Mars Hill College student is recovering Monday night after being attacked in a dormitory.At approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, the 20-year-old Mars Hill junior walked out of his room in Myers Hall to go to the bathroom. When he opened the door, a drink, rigged above to fall on his head as some sort of practical joke, spilled on him."He was disgruntled and, as he was cleaning it up, the attackers, a group of six was watching this as it unfolded and came out and confronted him," said the victim's stepfather Scott McCourry. "From what I understand he tried to talk himself out of the situation, tried to deescalate it."When that didn't work, McCourry says, one of the men asked him where he wanted to be hit - the stomach, the chest or the face. The victim replied that he'd rather not be hit, but it didn't matter. Two men began to beat him and the other four, McCourry says, "egged him on" and took out camera phones."They started hitting him outside of his dorm room, and as he tried to force his way back into his own room, they pursued him back into his room and beat him in his room," said McCourry. "I have not seen the room - I understand that there's blood - they left him in front of his refrigerator.When the men left, he called his fraternity brothers for help, and he was admitted to the hospital with a broken tooth, and a fractured nose and eye socket."This is not the first time he has been threatened, or roommates on the hall have been threatened by the same group," says McCourry.It happened in Myers Hall, a dorm that that houses primarily freshmen men - about half of them athletes a campus spokesman estimated - that students say is notorious for violence."To get attacked on the way from the bathroom, it's kind of unheard of in a school," said Mars Hill sophomore Annie Tesh.
