*You idiots do not even know what the word target means. I do not expect you to understand the validity of these complaints.*
Now, ANY card that effects a single card or a set number of cards on the field count as cards that TARGET the individual monster cards. Full-clearly cards target the FIELD and not any individual card so THEY can work on God Cards. Unless you have a field-scale wipe card in your deck, you are SCREWED when facing a God-Card in regards to card effects. This idiot has the mental capacity of a spoon, so people call him out on it. Winged Dragon of Ra? There are cards that can essentially NEGATE that downside entirely. Slifer? *swarm decks have been the meta for a LONG time.* *Obelisk?*

    • @NewNub
      @NewNub 6 років тому +6

assuming this comment wasn't ironic, I'll have to say: there are no cards that can negate Ra's downside that is worth playing. you can use all your resources to summon a big beatstick without killing off life points, but it gets removed in so many different ways from staples like dark hole, raigeki, kaiju, even mirror force. slifer's effect is completely useless, because the point with the so-called "swarm decks" is to create a board that can't be broken down. there will be plenty of negations and effects to disrupt you from summoning any god card. also, weaker monsters are usually summoned for their effects, meaning that the player could just special summon all the little combo pieces in defense position and end with a board filled with cards that slifer can't overcome.
the primary reason people can't ever win with god cards, after all, is because it wastes so many resources for just a single boss monster that has essentially no protection, with the player being left vulnerable without any protection because you used up everything to make the useless beatstick.

      dried persimmon, yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Life_Absorbing_Machine
*You were saying? I will now be using one of the MANY 0TK decks that use swarming to summon a massive and "inefficient" monster with enough ATK to kill Jesus while urging him NOT to come back.* Actually play the game properly, and you will not need to have a monster immune to card effects that already should have been dealt with.

    • @ybone8709

1Korlash they’re even worse. They had no writing but like 3 effects each. And ra has like a thousand hidden effects alone lol. They even made different versions of ra to use his effects with sphere and Phoenix mode. The ra card itself sucks but it’s other forms are halfway decent. Sphere mode even used to get side decked at some point lol.

"You can pay LP so that you only have 100 LP left; this card gains ATK and DEF equal to the amount paid."
    Let's break this down:
"You can" means that the person who plays the card has the option to activate this effect.
What is the effect? There are two parts to the effect. The first part is a cost, the second part is a benefit.
The cost: pay LP so that you only have 100 LP left. The card does not say "up to". If you activate the effect, you must pay LP in a manner so that you only have 100 LP left.
The benefit: the card gains xx/xx equal to the amount you payed in the previous part. I.E. the card gains (Your LP before effect -100)/(Your LP before effect -100).
There is literally no ambiguity here.

Its pretty funny that people don’t understand the targeting thing as even the anime elaborated on that point in the final duel where Yugi uses cards that don’t target the Gods to weaken them, stating it affected the field rather than the monster itself, though I suppose a lot of people never saw that far.

Jeffrey Monhollen it actually is when you are just getting back into the game after almost 12 years of not playing at all and now the card crams a whole novella of text into a tiny box that you have to strain your eyes to properly read and memorize. Also Konami sucks at their wording. I can easily see how new and returning players can get confused or easily misinterpret the card rules.

I think that a lot of these misconceptions come from the fact that people remember the effects from the anime and don't bother to read the actual printed cards. Maybe a video comparing and explaining both would help for people too lazy or too stubborn to read. I'm still impressed at how people try to argue that their RA can do whatever they want or that slifer can't be targeted and stuff like that.

When it comes to the god cards, it normally only becomes an issue when I'm playing a nostalgia game with my old high school chums, since they insist upon using the anime rules for the god cards.
...and I generally let them, since I'm the only one who continued to play past the synchro era in my circle of friends, and their 150 card deck that's "totally awesome because it has dark magician, blue eyes, all the egyptian gods, and all five pieces of exodia" is already so easy to beat, even if I use a GOAT format deck, that I'd feel bad if I didn't give them some kind of handicap. >.>

Oh, it is, don't get me wrong! My friends are kinda like a time capsule to how the game used to be. Like, My high school days were from 2002-2006, the game was way different back then. "Archetypes" weren't really a thing, and decks were generally just 'Frankenstein's monsters' of whatever good cards existed cobbled together.
I showed them my D/D deck a couple months back, since D/D is probably the best archetype in YGO to showcase the entire evolution of the game from 2006 to the present, and they were like "huh, so your cards help each other out? That's cool!" Before they said that, I'd forgotten that that wasn't really a thing that happened with cards back in our era!

A caveat to Pokemon is if an area is public information and a card says a number, you MUST do however many that card says. For example, Super Rod says put in any combination of 3 basic energy or Pokemon from your discard pile back to your deck. Since the discard pile is public info to the game state, you MUST put 3 back into the deck if there are at least 3. A card like Brigette says to put 3 basics (or 1 EX) from the deck to the bench. Since the deck is private information, you can put 0, 1, 2, or 3 onto the bench. It doesn't matter if your opponent, for some reason, knows that you have more, because the game state itself does not know.

...which, albeit just personal opinion, is nice. It penalizes you for lying the way you could with your Brigette example, and as long as you pay attention, you won't trigger that by accident. ever. unless you actually did try to lie and say you had less than you do... which would be a *ridiculously* stupid thing to do.

    • @cinansnickem228

Noone playes Shining because it requires you to play fusion cards in a non-fusion oriented deck, it's bricky and hard to summon and even if you do manage to somehow summon it, it only has a targetting negation effect and an ATK gaining effect. So, you can either do that or just run something like Twin Burst if you really want to fuse in your blue-eyes. It's a contact fusion, has battle protection, can attack twice per turn and has a banishing effect if it doesn't destroy the thing it wanted to destroy

My theory is that misinformation is one of the biggest reasons people don't understand rulings and card effects. In middle school(I'm in college now) a childhood friend and I use to cheat by making up effects for cards. It was a childish thing to do looking back since we lied to the other kids we played with by proclaiming ridiculous effects that gave us an unfair advantage. The kids we lied to never questioned us and for all I know they may grow up still believing that those effects we made up were real. With that being said I'm definitely not the first person in the world to spread misinformation about card effects and rulings. My real life example: I played MagicTG in high school and i remember playing with many different students who played at lunch and after school clubs. I remember having to constantly check rulings because it wasn't uncommon for someone(usually a newcomer) to use card effects incorrectly. Some would even stand by the fact that their ruling is correct because it's the way they always played, even if I had the correct rule pulled up on my phone they'd still be in denial. But the fact that he/she had been supposedly playing a card incorrectly their whole life tells me that they were misinformed and then went on to misinform other for possibly years of playing. I feel like misinformation isn't too uncommon in the casual scene of any TCG whether its because someone lied about and/or misunderstood a ruling.

As someone whose played a lot of Magic (and comparably, far less YuGi, but some), and has seen the effects of "rules text phrasing that seems ambiguous to novices", the biggest rule of thumb (which only applies to well-written card games, mind) I have is:
If the cards were meant to have the same effect, they'd be worded the same way. If they were meant to work differently, they'll be phrased differently.
The fact that Bark of Dark Ruler exists and is phrased differently to Ra, but seems to have the same effect as Ra (meaning the increments of life points paid is up to the player to decide), should be enough to clue you in that *these effects work differently*.

Compared to Raigeki? It's still not as good, due to eating up a lot of hand advantage, although at least you get to destroy spell/traps as well. In Hieratics? At least you get to plus from the tributed Hieratic monsters' effects, but Hieratics themselves aren't good either these days. You also have to consider the effort of making that Rank 8, which'll consume a bit of hand advantage even before you get to start destroying things with it's effects. It *does* however, make a good example of targeting vs non-targeting, i agree.

That dude who said summoning an Egyptian God with 3 tributes is no different than a Link summon is an idiot.
    1. Link Summoning is a special summon, so it doesn't take up your normal summon for the turn like a God Card would.
    2. Link monsters come from the Extra Deck, meaning they don't have to be in your hand to be useable.
    3. Not all Link Monsters require 3 monsters to be summoned.
And as an honorable mention as another difference I found between the 2 that doesn't have anything to do with the game itself
    4. I don't understand how Link Summoning works, as opposed to Tribute summoning, which I do understand.

    • @KnakuanaRka
      @KnakuanaRka 5 років тому

Da_Swifta Quick rundown on Link Summoning:
Link Monsters are a special type of Monster that are in the Extra Deck, with a foil blue background. They do not have a Def stat, and cannot be in Defense mode (or facedown, IIRC). Each Link Monster has a number of arrows pointing in some of the cardinal or diagonal directions; the number of Link Arrows it has is equal to its Link Rating.
To summon a Link Monster, you tribute a number of monsters exactly equal to its Link Rating, with certain restrictions listed on the card (say, 4 monsters with 2+ of them being Warriors). Link Monsters may be tributed as well, and may be treated as either one monster, or a number equal to its Link Rating (so, say, a Link-4 could be Summoned by tribute get a Link-3 and another monster, as 3+1=4), so long as you still satisfy the Link Monster’s requirements. Then, you may Link Summon the Link Monster onto the field in a valid area.
Now, the “in a valid area” part is one of the major rules changes in Master Rule 4; two new zones called the Extra Monster Zones have been added to the field between the two players’ Monster Zones. These are initially the only zones you can play Extra Deck monsters (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and some Pendulums), and each players can only use one of them at a time, with an exception I’ll get to later (§). However, you can place more ED monsters by playing Link Monsters: while a Link Monster is on the field, Extra Deck monsters can now be played into any zone its arrows point to (including the opponent’s). This includes more Link Monsters, opening up more of the field for you to play ED monsters in.
§ This exception is something known as an Extra Link. Basically, if two Link Monsters both have arrows pointing to each other, they are co-linked. An Extra Link is a chain of co-linked Link Monsters that connect the two Extra Monster Zones; even if you have already played a monster in one EMZ, you may also play one in the other if it would create an Extra Link.

    • @KnakuanaRka
      @KnakuanaRka 5 років тому

Some ASCII art if it will help!
Initially, there are two Extra Monster Zones, and each player may only use one at a time:
      mmmmm
      e e
      mmmmm
However, suppose you have a Link Monster with arrows pointing like this:
      ^
      M
      / \
After making the right tributes, you can play it in one of the EMZs, and it will open up more zones for ED monsters:
      mmmem
      e L
      mmeme
You could then potentially play another Link Monster like this:
      < L >
Into one of the zones to open up more:
      mmmem
      e L
      m e L e e

The reason people are confused by Ra's effect is:
1). Yu-Gi-Oh! card effects are stupid confusing and often they don't even English properly.
2). English is a stupidly confusing language and often it doesn't even logic properly.
Grammatically, the semicolon between the cost and the effect mucks up the whole business. A semicolon links 2 independent thoughts that are so related that a period should not (even though it can) divide them. The text: "... equal to the amount of LP paid," puts the ATK/DEF gained value in flux. Because we're relying on a semicolon here, we can naturally assume that, given the preceding clause is optional, the current clause is also optional. Further, given that the gained value in question is variable, we assume that the payment is equivalently variable.
The effect is further confused by the proceeding effect. "You can pay 1000 LP..."
Well, if RA's initial effect causes me to drop down to 100 LP, why would its secondary effect need me to pay 1000 LP?
(I know that, given Yu-Gi-Oh!, your explanation of the card text is, in fact, accurate ; I'm just sayin' I can certainly understand how people might be confused by it. And, also, I always though you could select the amount of LP sacrificed for the card).

The cards effects are listed after the conditional with a normal colon and seperated by commas.
"When this card is Normal Summoned:"
      Then we get the effects.
"You can pay LP so thay you only have 100 left;this card gains ATK and DEF equal to the amount of LP paid. You can pay 1000 LP, then target 1 monster on the field; destroy that target.
The colon indicates everything after is what you CAN do. Both effects start out with what action you CAN take by saying "You can". The semi colons seperate the action you can take and the result of that action. Both actions and results are seperated by periods to indicate they are not related.
There really isnt any room to interpret that the amount of LP you pay is optional, because that language is all in the first clause of the first effect, and it doesnt present any kind of variable.
It isnt about the english itself, its actually quite robust in explaininh what this cars in particular can do. People think that you can pick the amount of LP to sacrifice because that was an effect that was explained everytime Ra was onscreen in the anime. This is also why people still think that Egyptian Gods cant be killed by Spells, Traps, or Monster Effects.
      There isn't any excuse.

I actually made a god card deck once. It revolved around giving extra normal summons and generating tribute fodder for the gods (Skapeghost, Fluffal Mouse, Card Advance, etc.), running “Monarchs” cards for beefy tribute summoning support (especially the trap monster that counted as two tributes for any choice of attribute- I chose Devine obviously), as well as Abusing the heck out of Sphere Mode, Precious Cards from Beyond, and Lighten the Load. Then, I summoned “The Creator God Of Light. Horakhty” for the win (that is, if the gods didn’t work for me by then).
It was (almost) good enough to defeat a Magical Musket deck. My opponent had to search-milll all but two cards in his deck to beat me. And being Muskets, search-milling every card in their deck is what they often do best.
You were right about one thing though- a dark hole did kill obelisk by the end of the duel. That is, after 20 of his cards (including his Raigeki, the only other card in his deck that would have saved him) were banished by Pot(s) of Desires during his scramble for a card for which to defeat Obelisk with.
That duel was the closest I ever got to beating his extreme, combo-strategy based decks of overpowered meta stupidity, or any meta/strategy based decks for that mater. So in short, I think the gods are slightly better than the video claims, and that a god-based deck can be (somewhat) practical and fun to try.
This is still a good video BTW. Sorry for (slightly defensive) the rant/rebuttal.

    • @Dzeeff

    • @Arial55555
      @Arial55555 6 років тому

No, it's not really that surprising to me. I knew the deck wasn't meta, but it was a powerful deck for me to deal with nonetheless- he's the kind of guy who specially orders all the cards of an entire deck online and has separate copies of raigeki, dark hole, and the solemn brigade in each deck. None of my other decks were ever powerful enough to stand a chance against him. Out of all of his decks, however, this duel was the closest victory- and I still lost. (Well, except an extremely lucky time with a Jackpot 7 deck, but I didn't have enough LP left to finish the combo and win)
(Keeping in mind that his "Other Decks" includes Yosenjus and Noble Knights, as well as several other ones that were probably just as good)

So in theory with ra (not saying this is practical or you should ever try to do it) you could summon ra, choose not to pay life points and give him attack power. I thought that the effect of Ra was pretty clear based on this text. It always implied to me that when Ra is summoned, you have the option of paying all but 100 of your life points, as a cost. And then Ra gained ATK equal to the number of life points payed.
I can kinda see where people are coming from though. And while I don't think Ra's text is super vague myself, I do feel like Ra could be made a bit more clear if they phrased it as "When this card is Normal Summoned: You can pay all but 100 of your LP; this card gains ATK and DEF equal to the amount of LP paid."
It's not perfect, but I think that the phrasing I used better illustrates the fact that you can either pay all of your LP except 100, or not pay at all. Also, the anime ruling was generally the same. Although from what I remembered they did phrase it more closely to the way I did (Saying "I can pay all but 1 of my life points to fuse with Ra" or something).
Also, Ra isn't the "exact same" as Backs to the Wall, and I think you've actually missed what makes Ra more confusing. I don't think the ATK gain is what makes Ra confusing, and I don't think that the ATK gain is what makes Backs to the Wall easier to understand. I think that the reason people understand Backs to the Wall better is that Backs to the Wall's cost is *MANDATORY*. That's the distinction. When you activate Backs to the Wall, the paying of LP is a mandatory effect. There's no "cans" or anything in there. Because Backs to the Wall is a mandatory effect, and is phrased as a mandatory effect; I think that's why Backs to the Wall's phrasing works. And why I think you missed the point when you were talking about it. This also applies to Icarus Attack, since it's a mandatory effect.

I understand some cards printed before psct were later changed to include target: d prison, compulse, bom, etc, but the effect of equip cards to equip themselves is targeting and yet many equip cards do not specify this. Also certain monster effects that include equipping opponents monsters to them is a targeting effect (vaccuumen) despite not saying target anywhere on the card as well as other cards with the same effect that are older saying target (thousand eyes restrict) or select (which became target)
