Beautiful Astro. Nice to see someone double clutching too. A diesel mech friend worked for Cat many moons ago and there was an old guy there who used to rebuild all the boxes. He was 'that guy', the one that had been around since Adam was a lad, and knew his way around every gearbox know to man. He told my friend he'd only ever had to replace gearsets on trucks where drivers 'floated' the gears and could tell someone who knew how to double clutch properly as soon as he opened the box for inspection. Guys like that are worth their weight in gold nowadays, and sadly most have long since passed. Hope that other Astro found a good home - another beautiful truck.
The first I remember hearing one of these was in a Continental Trailways (Eagle) bus in the early 1960s and then later on in road trucks. I agree with you regarding mufflers. I don't care for an 8V 71 with straight exhaust, but I like the sound of a 6 71 straight. Still waiting on a clutch for Sarge?
No it’s a 13 but I basically drive it like 7 speed. Staring in 4 to 5 low, then over to direct 6, 7, 8, 9, then flip button to overdrive. I could run through them all for fun though it’s not necessary without a load

Know where there’s a couple of long frame GMC General grain haulers with 8V71 Detroits I could probably get them both for 5K Wish I had a place to put them
Nothing like the older big trucks. Nothing much speaks Real Truck Driver like a cabover. Althogh I never was a fan of the V Detroits. Apparently not a lot of people were. I dont know for sure but before I was old enough by a couple of years they had thier problems and In Lines held up a lot better with the weight and wear. Sounded good. But instead of one head you got two. Cost was probably another reason. Sometimes two heads aint better than one. And not to mention 8 cylinders instead of six. It was a good thought in design but not really practical.

That squeak sounds like a bearing in the collum
Good luck at you show man. It will grow every year. Invite fixer uppers and some for sales, with a swap meet handful used parts u b fine. Hell, I'd trailer my racecar down but I'm racing it. Post this for me: Nice semi truck Show n Shine in Hudsonville Mi June 9-10th and Truck Semi Pull in Morley Mi too.
Thanks Tom, I’ll try and remember to plug it…. Can’t guarantee with so much goin on to remember but will definitely try to.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE naw no worries Dane it's on here.
Man that brings back good memories my Dad had a cab over 72 Diamond Rio with a 318 and a 13 speed I would catch him gone and I would take off up the road with it and once I hit a pothole and broke one of the cab cab support yea I was busted but he didn't get to mad 😅
Lol…. Now that’s a great story/memory to have! Thanks for watching
I agree with you regarding mufflers. I don't care for an 8V 71 with straight exhaust, but I like the sound of a 6 71 straight.
Still waiting on a clutch for Sarge?
Yes sir we think alike 😬👍
I learned to drive an 18 wheeler in a 318 Detroit. Watching this video the only thing I see is, what is the deal with using the clutch?
Hat tipped to you Driver 👍. As far as the Clutch watch episode 13 of the KW resto.
That shift pattern.. looked like a 10 speed but... backwards? Am I seeing things?
No it’s a 13 but I basically drive it like 7 speed. Staring in 4 to 5 low, then over to direct 6, 7, 8, 9, then flip button to overdrive. I could run through them all for fun though it’s not necessary without a load
@Dane Scotts - TRUCKERS LOUNGE it looked as though you were shifting right to left though. Instead of left to right. Still a clean machine none the less
Hi dane we won't be able to make the show on Saturday my husband is wishing he could afford to by the ASTRO your friends family is selling that truck is killer and awesome looking we will continue to watch your videos especially the gmc jamboree get together take care dane your friends from Minnesota Dan and Shelly weiers
Sad to hear Shelly sorry you can’t be here. I’ll be posting it all soon though. Thanks for watching as always. 😬👍
they didn't call them a glass hotel for nothin'!!
The squeak on the steering wheel sounds a bit like an old Amish plough but it goes well for its age
If you ever put out a 16x20 poster of blue jay im buying one
Deal! 😊👍
Dont staight pipe blue jay ,it will be beyond noisey ,my step dad had a cracker box inline 671n ,he made it into a heavy wreaker ,one night we headed out ,and being a teanager at the time what i perceived as noisey was intolerabel when the muffler fell of😎
I "hear" ya Bud, I like it just how it is.
I’m thinking about purchasing a 79 International Paystar tri-axle dump that has the 8V-71 but no engine brake. How hard is it to add a jake to these?
Not hard at all from what I’m told. Contact Billy Parker on Facebook… North Carolina
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE thanks for your info!
I want to see one of these turned into a motorhome
If you have a turbo you can run your truck with no mufflers because a turbo is considered a mufflering device. 71 series were non turbo engines
Right, it used to be part of the casting that stated that too. 😬
First! Blue Jay's steering wheel sounds like it is dragging on something. Definitely hearing metal on metal contact. Too bad about Joyride, but too many toys, not enough room in the toy chest.
Yes , there's a rubber or fiber "shim" that wears out Mr. Wizard told me. He found one on Ebay and so we just have to install it soon.
Its the upper mast jacket bearing. Its where the steering shaft comes out of the column.
Just found my new trucking channel.
Awesome John! Thanks for watching 😬👍
for anybody that doesn't like the low flow cooling on the 444, Pittsburgh Power has all the parts to convert it over to the high flow
Thanks for the info
Scott I'm new to channel I like all your trucks my mom and dad used to be owner operators started out with a white Road Commander 2 cabover with a 350 then we went to Peterbilts cabovers what kitty cats what does blue jay have in it for a motor thank you
Welcome aboard Paul and thank you! You e got a great heritage there. BlueJay has a Detroit Diesel 8V-71 / 13 speed
Thank you Dean proof the update on blue jay I forgot to tell you that it was a 350 Cummins and the White Road Commander 2 I love you UA-cam channel thanks again for the reply
You mean you don't want to be like James Pretty and have 17 trucks in the driveway? I love James but he has the sickness bad.
Getting Blue Jay Limber...
Does that old semi have power steering & power brakes?
Power steering but big trucks have air brakes my friend. 😊👍
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE what year is that semi?
It's this coming weekend or next 🤔
This Saturday June 3
👁️ u there ☮️✝️
I would like to see a 13 th gear
Know where there’s a couple of long frame GMC General grain haulers with 8V71 Detroits
I could probably get them both for 5K
Wish I had a place to put them
I'm looking for old trucking company signs from trailers.

All that driving, never got out of second in high range. What are we supposed to make of that?
😂
I bet you can't shift it without double clutching 😂
Detroit
Nothing like the older big trucks. Nothing much speaks Real Truck Driver like a cabover. Althogh I never was a fan of the V Detroits. Apparently not a lot of people were. I dont know for sure but before I was old enough by a couple of years they had thier problems and In Lines held up a lot better with the weight and wear. Sounded good. But instead of one head you got two. Cost was probably another reason. Sometimes two heads aint better than one. And not to mention 8 cylinders instead of six. It was a good thought in design but not really practical.
I definitely love the 6-71 sound
