When I was a small kid, in the days long before the interstates highways, I lived along a rural stretch of US 35 in Ohio. This was when I was so young that "experts" say kids don't have memories of things, but I recall the steady stream of trucks around the clock.
There were the orange/dark blue H model Macks of Roadway, and the red ones with HENNIS emblazoned in bright yellow on the trailers. Then there were the McLean trucks. They were red GMC's, the ones later referred to as "cannonballs" which were then just called "screamin' GMC's". We lived near the foot of a hill, so they were grabbing gears and screaming like banshees. Even at night, everyone recognized the McLean trucks by their horrendous screaming on that hill. I loved 'em.
Oh man! You got to experience the true heyday of it all. Awesome!
I always like the smooth lines of the 50's GMCs, both COE and conventionals. And of course those old GM "screamin' jimmys" under the hood.
As a kid here in Australia and coming from a trucking family, I used to watch "Cannonball" on TV!! these trucks come up great when done up. Fantastic video.
Wow! That’s awesome! Great old show. Thanks for watching
That cannonball was a awesome find, great memories riding in one as a kid.👍👍
I happened to catch this video on a UA-cam "sidebar", and clicked on it immediately! I was a "Cannonball" fan going way back to the TV series...I can remember those lyrics like it was yesterday..."Rollin' down the highway, shiftin' of the gears...the rhythm when he's rollin' is music to his ears". I even had one of those Dinky "Supertoy" diecast models of a "Cannonball" McLean Trucking rig!! And, of course, I can never forget seeing those iconic McLean rigs rolling up U.S. 1 (before the completion of I-95) when my Dad took us on vacation to Virginia in our Ford Falcon!! This is one beautiful look back to a time I embraced with all my passion. Thanks, Dane...you're the finest.
So glad to give you a little “retro throwback joy”. That’s what it’s all about with these classic American icons. 😊👍
Gorgeous!
Love this channel doesn't get much better than this. Thanks Dane for sharing with us buddy.
Appreciate your support my friend. :)
I saw this Gentleman on an episode of American Pickers. Ohio, now that's a surprise! Thanks!
Wow! Cool 😮👍
I'm glad that you are! Thank you for your time and work with the channel.
And thanks for watching John
The GMC is a beautiful truck. I remember hearing them trucks running thru town.
Good job love the video
Thanks Don
Pleasure to see all these old trucks, thanks 👍
You bet Don, thanks for watching
Excellent score at the end.
Love those emblems!!
Nice variety of rigs too!!

My first driving job was a crackerbox Jimmy hauling grain all over Iowa to the Mississippi river .
Wonderland.

Would enjoy seeing the Ole cannonball rolling coal !!!! Wow !!! Alot of history there for sure !!!! Hopefully the cannonball will be going to a good home !!! Another awesome successful adventure !!!! Hope you have an awesome evening brother
Thanks Robert you too! :)
Love ❤️ love love that cannonball
You KNOW I do too! lol.
Very cool, great vid!!!!! 👍👍
Greetings from London uk, love old american trucks, I remember when I was a kid watching the series 'movin on' in the late 70s, Benji and Moose had a GMC crackerbox. Love that old Cannonball, wow what a bad a$$ looking thing.
I’m with ya Harry all the way 😬👍
Great video ! I was out there trucking and remember Thurston well. Keep the shiny side up and keep up the good work
thanks John
Hello cracker box hunter the old canaball gmc looks👀 like old thurston motor lines tractor I remember that company but i don't remember gmc canaball as one of the tractors was way before my time and breeding Diseal thanks for keeping help keeping gmc crakerbox history a live hammer down safe and sound🚛👍
Scrappy stance, classic headlights with a cab over the engine. I always like the GMC emblem.
I was impressed on how rust free those GMC trucks were. Love to see a cannonball that is being recovered. That cracker box had a great exterior, bui the interior was scary (I knew a woman that was exactly the same, lol)
Run!!! lol
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE That red one...
Looking mighty tempting
Like that second slice of truck stop diner pie!
Ya know....
Dane great video love all those vintage trucks
Thanks buddy
Watched Cannonball when I was a kid.
So did I!
Old memories convoy the Trucker Film⛽⛽⛽🚦🚥🛻🚚🚛🚜
Love the red Ford H series cabover. Makes me think I'm a kid again and many were still in use when I started driving. The predecessor to the CL series. The white Ford I'm betting runs since it still has the keys with a tag in it. Naturally I like the Dayton wheels. In Arizona we simply called them eastern wheels since not a lot of trucks except LN Fords were sold with the Daytons out there.
For a 70 year old truck or close to it, the Cannonball is in amazing condition and not much rust. And my favorite engine, the 6-71 Detroit. And I'd never ever modernize it.
I like how you think my friend! :)
I think I will have to keep them in mind as I would love to get something like that old gmc and bring it back to life and drive it home to alaska
That cabover IH is from My home town!
I’d love to get that flatbed crackerbox
Isso me lembra muito na adolescência
Woah you got another truck! I missed that video
neat old ''canonball==
The cannon ball is my favorite! Id jump at the chance to show it some love
Totally agree 👍
I hope the new owner gets that GMC Cannonball back on the road ! I remember walking home from school seeing quite a few trucking terminals on old U S 1 south of Richmond Va. Overnite, Wilson , & Thurston , & the 151st truck line Preston , But I wasn't even a teenager yet ! But seeing all those day cabs mostly , & most were cabovers , & a few conventional cabs ! But vary rarely I would see a sleeper , Who knew at the time 8 to 9 years later I would become a driver ! & start seeing all the big sleepers conventional trucks with independents driving them out of Florida with fresh produce , & there reefer trailers on I -95 when it was just 2 lanes . Seeing that tractor with the Thurston logo brought some memories .
I love it when I can jog those special truck memories!
Hey buddy good luck
Awesome to see these old GMC trucks! 😀
I hope whoever is getting that old GMC 660 will do a complete and thorough restoration on it. That is one classic bad rig. It deserves saving.
It’s definitely going to get some attention and love.
That's great that Brayden had your hood, you won the lottery there, those emblems are hard to find. I saw my truck, when you first got to Tucker Equipment, the white Ford L8000
Yes Brayden’s been such a great friend and help. That Ford is nice too. 😬👍
The Chevy C- 90s were a wee bit more popular with Farmers than their GMC 9500 brothers that is what I heard GMC dealers had the very large service departments to accommodate all the big fleet customers small Chevy dealers in rural communities always had a few C - 90s & C-80s C- 70s parked off to the side with sales ribbons & balloons
I see your point George, makes marketing sense especially in the small communities.
G M C ASTRO 95 ,best truck ever.
Probably a good thing it's already sold since you're running out of space LOL!!
Lol… right
I really hope that Thurston motor lines truck gets restored back to original as a Thurston motor lines truck god I wish it was mine it would be back in NC love the video
I do too!!! :)
Awesome classic iron Brayden has, of course yours are also awesome. So the Crackerbox replaced the Cannonball, didn't it?
Had one just like it bought it from Allied Van lines agent in wpg MB in 1969 /73 .sold it because no one would work on it
I was wondering how long it would be to get another great one and I think this might be it.

Looking at those Cracker Box Jimmies , I can hear the Detroit scream and my teeth rattle
Some sweet old trucks there. The Cannonball is spoken for! Actually looks good for being as old as it is. More than restorable given time and patience. Be hard to find the pieces but if a guy looks I bet they can be found. Will be cool truck when done. I thought your truck was a GMC not a Chevy.
Yep, it's C90 Chevy. They are identical except grille and badges.
Sears blue
I wish you guys would go out to Rockingham County,NC to a old timer with a collection of K-100’s from Burton Lines of Reidsville,NC.
That’d be quite a trip for sure. 😬
Man, I frickin' love Blue Jay! I'm a Ford guy, but still dig that Astro cab more than that sweet red CL9000.
Ya, that truck reaches out and grabs ya and don't let go! lol.
Took my Driving test in a 630, Examiner said to me He really didn't want to be seen riding in it !! Guess He didn't care for Screamin Gimmey's !!
Shame on him lol 😂
Hello dane Scotts the cracker box hunter yes it would be nice if can bring the gmc crakerbox flatbed on june 3 to the gmc jamboree would be a another old school cracker box to see and hear run looking 👀 forward seeing you and all old school drivers and the old school trucks🚛👈
That'll be awesome Don!
The snub nose is spoken for???? See if you can trade it for the dump truck. I love that snub nose myself
We just bought a 58 cannonball and i was wondering where you got those gmc mudflaps. Would love a set for ours
I made them. They are the polycarbonate smooth ones and I added the GMC logos. You can email me sdgraphics@gwcmail.net
Wish you could make a offer on that cannonball
Oh man!!!! Yes!!!
With your love for gmc tractors you’d thing you pick up would be a gmc also lol
Quite a collection. That Cannonball got used hard. It's almost sitting on the overloads. Needs some serious work. Still a valuable time capsule.
Right and a hefty pocketbook.
I would like to hear that Detroit Diesel purr.
I remember dad driving one like this then the cracker box , with a 318.
I drive a Starlight Western Star, 550 Cat 18 spd
Hard to picture dad driving one of these pulling a 40 ft flat with a 238 and i think a 10 speed.
And i call myself a truck driver.
You’re every bit a Driver Ed, and you have a great driver heritage with your Dad paving the way. Hat tipped and thanks for watching 😊
Thanx for the ride-a-long Dane , congrats on the new Badges and hood , , quick question if your able to answer , awhile back Bradon had for sale a Pete 282 cabover , it was white with the very short sleeper for pulling doubles back in the day , the 282 was the 352 version of the factory single axle , hence the 282 model# to tell them apart , was just wondering if he still had that , if you saw it around his yard , this was at least 3 to 4 yrs ago ??? maybe longer it was listed on the website ??? Just wondering if it ever go sold 👍👍👍👍
I think its long gone Bro.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE yeah I figured so , Thanx for the reply Dane , Safe Travels 👍👍👍👍
will you use the new hood on the green truck since i'm guessing the fenders aren't cut?
Probably not, I’ve already got the emblems transferred and will use the turn signals as well. You have to raise the cab for the high hood, or cut the fenders.
Cannonball was my favorite show when I was a kid! Was the actor who played Mike Malone Allan Hale, Skipper from Gilligan's Island?
I don’t think so but it was a bit before my time. Thanks for watching
Great finds! Was that you playing the music? Keep doing your dedicated work!!
Thanks Ed, just the GMC intro song 😬
Have you come across any trucks from Jones truck lines up in your area. I had my late grandpa who drove for them out of the Tulsa, OK location until their closure in 1990 I think. I'd like to see pictures if you ever come across one
Haven’t yet Dan but I would definitely love to find one
O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 Most of the time I don’t read too many of the comments, for I’m sure we’re all thinking & saying the same thing. Man, what a trip that one was!! 😎 I gotta make it up there to check this place out! 🥰🥰🥰So how many Crackerboxes are you taking?🥰🥰🥰 C’mon! It was at least tempting wasn’t it?! You at least got a nice hood! Many good parts in the hood, if you don’t decide to use it for something. I didn’t see your tongue hanging out, well it wasn’t shown on camera at least. Hehehe! That’s one place I’m afraid to go, unless I have loads of money in my pocket or know that I’m just “window shopping “. That’s why I always liked going to a truck junkyard when I was a kid…So Many Good Parts or Projects! Thanks for the update. The Jamboree is on my calendar!🥰🤩✌️
Cboxes are always tempting but I got my hands full now with the C90 getting ready for June. Hope to meet ya there. Thanks! :)
Love the trucks but more, I luv the background music.
Please tell me who that is.
At what time mark? I use a lot of clips
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I'll watch again and let you know.
Im looking for a frame for my 56 ford coe
Cheers Dane first time I've seen the inside and sleeper of these Cannonballs. What's happening with this classic?
I haven’t seen much about it but was supposed to be light restored.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE Cheers Dane.
Woww! That's a Thurston Motor Line logo on that old Cannonball! A first seeing that for me! The ones I've seen when I was young were on the old GMC Crackerbox, Astro, and a small handful of Brockways back in the day... Someone also told me they used the White Freightliner non-sleepers then, too!
I know! It was awesome to see in person. 😬👍
Dane, what was the thinking behind the cracker box cab anyway?
Not sure really but it was an upgrade at the time...then Astro took over in 69.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE Thanks, its just an unusual shape but pretty cool.
That red Crackerbox needs a 5th wheel. Never mind that gooseneck plate garbage.
Maybe the owner wants it that way, not sure.
Hmm...if you daydreamed of stuffing a V8 detroit in a cannonball, ugh, its probably not going to happen. You'd need to make it Australian raised body spec and have the cab lifted 8 inches.
Why don’t you restore that cannonball
Not available
There’s no such place as “Ora-GON.” There is a place called “ORA-gun”, however. Only an easterner would say the former. Or a Californian. 😎
How many cracker boxes can one man own? As many as he wants to. Go for Dane.
lol
How many Cannonballs do you see anymore??
My first in person.
What's up with the earrings??
Really?
I have a 1951 Bull Nosed White Freightliner Cabover with Sleeper. Clear title > I'd like to find it a new home Anyone interester Message me
If they were running that in the 21st century they win the cheapskate trucking company owner of the century award.
fantastic from italia - collega.
