    Voith has some very cool concepts and products, though I wonder what the payoff is after maintenance. Having served in the Navy as a diver for 24 years I can tell you that salt water, even salt air, is not friendly to anything, especially mechanical.

      yeah that's what I was worried about lol when it said "lubricated by sea water" I instantly imagined the kinds of super small ocean life that could "assist in the turbine's operation"

    • @xPr3am
      @xPr3am 3 роки тому

      I assume you mean oxidation through the salty water or to put it simple rust which could destroy the metal parts? If yes, then you are in the wrong. Oxidation needs oxygen to form rust which harms the materials. In this case the turbine is completly surrounded by water, therefore there is no oxygen and no rust. One good example is Venecia, its a city in Italy where most of the houses are standing in the water on wooden beams, thoses wooden beams dont get rotten as you would assume. Although I think the lifespan of the materials is shorter then in normal use cases.

    • @HiTechDiver

      @@xPr3am H2O is composed of hydrogen and oxygen. Metal does rust underwater. I'm no scientist, though I don't have to be to see it every time I dive.

      @@thebobbysisters The effects can be mitigated, though eventually salt water wins. I have witnessed it my whole adult life, as I have lived around salt water for 40 years. I would be curious to know what materials they use. That would make the biggest difference.

    They have an installed Capacity of 1 MW? 1 onshore wind turbine has an installed capacity of 2.5 - 3 MW, and offshore one has 3.6MW. Moreover wind turbines not that huge, so it's much cheaper to produce. How are those turbines worth it?

    • @AnotherWierdThing

      any damage to marine life would be extremely minimal, the problem is the intermittent nature of tidal power, similar to solar. Large batteries would likely be required in this system.

  • @ProgressiveVegan

    This part seems a bit dubious. They state that each device is 1MHw. They state that 400 TWh/year can be collected with these devices. If true, if my math serves, that's 400 million devices. They would be all over the planet, and not all offshore areas, such as a lot of the US Pacific coast, are suitable. Even if these devices are 10 times bigger (a decade after this video was produced), that would still be 40 million turbines. Please comment if you have knowledge here. I'm looking to learn. Thanks.

    For innovation of this propposed power plant;
    1) The sea current must be boosted first from multiple source then house in one solid channel wherein the step up sea current is now the one will drive the turbine of huge power plant . The power plant of course house inside the huge channel wherein step sea current is produced.
    This will totally protect the power plant itself because it is contained solidly but the saltwater damage(rust) must be addressed.
    Moreover, scientists obviously and no doubt can solve this saltwater issue(rust) , materials that negate rust or similar issues undersaltwater.
    Finally, the huge obstacle is "Political Will"

    i am sure that desalination plants could use tidal turbines to off set the massive cost of power needed to operate, and if designed properly, the repair harbor could even be added to the foot print of the plant itself. just how many turbines and the logistics of it all would depend on the plant itself, but it seems like something to look into. beyond the costs of the initial investment, and the constant maintnence of the system, i would hope at some point the fossil fuel way of power production would balance closer so the idea would be viable, just a thought...

    This appears great. The challenge is that humans are selfish and static. We can harness the infinite potential of all forms of energy through automation to free up labor for innovation and research. That is only possible if those who own what has been automated learn to share their capital i.e. they should either fund the innovation or pay taxes for welfare of everyone.

    400 Terawatt hours = 4 * 10^11 kilowatt hours
    1 kilowatt costs 0.11 dollars normally.
    4 * 10^11 * 0.11 = 10^9 dollars
    Can someone check my math? I think the video said incorrectly how much this turbine makes at timestamp 0:45. I think they meant to say megawatt hours.

      My concern as well. Cetaceans rely on sound waves for navigation, etc. A squeaky rotor could cause confusion anxiety. Will whales have to learn to avoid these blades by the deaths and suffering of their kin? A knick in the conduit would electrify the area? Many people think the ocean floor is barren but it is not. I don't know, we humans plow ahead in the name of 'progress' and learn by experience at other lives expense, all of which is justified by anthropocentric views. Governments will learn to tax this technology too.

      @Zee Koon: We use Autodesk Maya Software and RealFlow. You have to build 3D model first, then texture it, animate and finaly render pictures. If you have liquid animations, you have to simulate them first, before you can render pictures. When pictures are rendered, you convert them to movie. Then it is the same procedure as with any other movie. Hope this helps and good luck!
