- I got asked on stream about my opinion on how good Shiki Tohno is in Melty Blood Type Lumina. So I decided to give a nice long overview on the things that I think makes him a very strong character in comparison to Arcueid who have similar tools. How Do We Feel About Shiki Tohno Overall Strength?

I play Arc and Miyako, a friend of mine plays Shiki. When we started we were about even, but when I wanted to try Shiki I didn't even go into training mode and beat his ass. This man is so easy to play. I think everyone should have a pocket Shiki.
Strong for sure. Whenever I fight Shiki, I'm telling you I'm kinda shook from the character choice at this point.
Why Shiki is strong: Nanaya
This dude Shiki hits me from half screen with some bullshit that's NOT a projectile. Top tier for sure.
i swear this dude Shiki converts off of everything 😂 any stray hit he gets on accident puts me into a full combo

@@ken-yo2hz Agree. I main her and the play for her is full range which results in a pure guessing game for her and the opponent rather than aggressive play
shiki with the nanaya install is definitely top 1 in my opinion. i play him and abuse this stuff like crazy.
the game is really balanced though a lot of the other characters are kind of disgusting in their own ways. shiki is just that "well rounded" protagonist we usually see in these fighting games except instead of being ok at everything he's pretty damn good at everything.
Yea every character feels viable within this game! Although I feel shiki doesn't lose to anyone, there are some annoying matchups to play out for sure.
He's Strive Sol but fun to fight is what I'm getting
@@jouheikisaragi6075 Shiki doesnt have a dump truck damage DP, crazy low profile tool, or access to plus frames, like strive Sol.
but shiki does have all the necessary tools to be a great character in melty blood and similarly to Sol he always converts into good damage off his neutral wins.
but other characters such as duo maids can loop unblockable okizeme, and vlov can create unblockables in neutral if you air block his projectiles, and red arc has a dummy strong invincible neutral skip, so yeah shiki is really good but his cheater factor is the nanaya install. so yeah shiki is really good but the rest of the cast is close behind him.
I agree Shiki has better neutrals. But I think Arcueid truly shines best on corner pressure. Arcueid has more oppression once she gets you to the corner. The thing with 214B is that, I actually use that as a mixup sometimes. Since it's nearly indistinguishable from the light version, shielding the 2nd hit isn't always guaranteed, so you get a free fatal grab if you read their shield. And if they don't shield, you get plus frames. Mashing will get them hit by the 2nd hit into an easy convert.
And Arcueid can convert to a full combo on the corner off of a grab, which actually hurts a lot. Her a throw also gives her disgusting Oki in the air if she saves the airdash(this isn't unique to her, but its still something she has over Shiki's corner stuff) and since she's close to the opponent on wakeup, there are times itll even go through reversals if they DP on the wrong timing. Arcueid remains safe in a lot of her options, and shielding is dangerous in the corner against her
EDIT: I don't mean arcueid better than shiki, I just mean, in certain situations, Arcueid also has her oppressive rushdown tools more effective than Shiki. I still think shiki has better tools since his is effective anywhere on the stage, while Arcueid's is diminished unless in the corner

The problem with Arc is her removal of her 5CC wall chaser which help to force a corner, also lacking the option to shutdown people from jumping from corner pressure like 623B anti-air. Also she doesn't have health bonus and damage from her previous version, because she lacks tools to get in. To be honest, Arc corner pressure is just average. I think they nerf her too much because of MBAA.
Yea the shield is a risk I was just explaining that she has no way to alter the timing so it can be shielded. Fatal corner grabs definitely do a nice chunk which is a plus as well. The ability your talking about to steal turns is decent for sure Along with her rekka and “plus” super. There are times where she has to use a resource for her converts tho like rekkas. But yea like you said shiki is just more solid overall due to his conversion ability and more chances to alter his turn steals without converting to resources, and more chances to stay close to the opponent. As stated tho both are completely viable characters and there are no bad characters!
Shiki might be one of the best characters in the game but he is not a waifu, and that is one of the most important factors when choosing a character.

I feel the reason why characters can have very good tools and not feel super busted in MBTL has to do with just how strong the defensive options in this game are. If the defensive options weren't strong a lot of characters would feel busted.
Petition for lore accurate shiki: decaying health, basic stab/slash attack, constant headaches but unblockable attacks (due to mystic eyes of death perception)

If he super you once you're as good as dead. His mix up is so good, I don't know why in this game it's a good idea for character to have fast, good range, safe, and godlike 50/50.
On top of anything, he's also mad easy to play lol.
Shikis 2c is as fast as Vlov's 5A bro 😳

Don't give them ideas bro. Next thing they'll do is release Nanaya with his Kyokushi Nanaya as a full screen instant knife throw Arc Drive.
I actually took interest in playing shiki because of nanaya install and spam banana hands.

the normal follow up is just B.
Also the reason why Arcueid isn't as good as shiki with hard KD is that Arcueid is a corner carry rushdown character, and Shiki is a vortex character. they have similar tools but use them for different ends, which ultimately makes them not as comparible and makes the "shiki is just a better Arcueid" comment more of a surface level analysis.
Arc doesn't want you waking up in midscreen for mixups because she doesn't have many. she wanted you teching in the corner or off walls to trap you/bait you into shield punishes. Her rekkas also exist to steal turns like shiki's delayed extension from 214 so it would be more fair to compare that to hsi slide instead of her 214.
Is shiki strong? hell yeah. but that's because he's a consolidated character from everything that made him and nanaya good in previous games. not because he's better than arc who's not playing the game the same way.
Yea I figure the super out on my second attempt lol. But I definitely feel like they do a lot of the same thing. Arc is a rush down character whose neutral tools just aren’t as strong. She’s not a mixup character but she is a rush down character. Rekkas you can try to steal turns back but it’s 100% meter dependent for any type of substantial reward so it’s not as nearly good. They both do and wanna do a lot of the same stuff he just does it better with his ability to convert off his pressure and space control without resources.

Also, I'd agree that if you played Arc like shiki, shiki does do better in all respects. his moves are meant to be used exactly how use use them in neutral compared to hers. Arc pushes you to the corner, pressures you into trying to shield/reversal then punishes. that's why most of her tools can convert into a metered/meterless launcher.
Shiki is better defensively, because that lends to his strengths in neutral. the fact that their specials cover similar paths are kinda where the similarities end. Arc actually wants to set up tech traps in the corner with BE 5c or 2c and convert or punish landings. whereas Shiki is more like the Hisui where they turn hard KDs into left right mixups and bait out reversals right there.
all this to say that "better arc" is not the reason why He's so good. it kinda feels beside the point

I truly think they use their tools in very similar fashions when playing to their strengths his reward from it is just better generally without resources having to be spent for conversion or to make him safe. But yea best thing about the game is everyone feels viable right now so it’s not to say she don’t have her own strongpoints
the fact he gets Oki off of Unblockable attacks is really getting to me as a player with no unblockables lol

9:23 i know this is a year old, but in older versions of melty, nanaya's 214B *was* a low, and only lost that property in exchange for being jumpcancelable in AACC
The Ryu of a game is designed to have every basic tool for the meta of their specific game
Arc traditionally has good mix ups and strong corner carry. They really nerfed her from prev versions imo.

2:20 they can actually forward tech away from the corner if you don't use the super version. But that's where the mind games start. Because you can predict their forward tech and punish it. So you juggle between instant teching, where shiki has to commit to a dash in to get meaty jab, or forward tech to avoid meaty. You just have to guess. You can't just watch if shiki runs in and then forward tech, since the tech window is smol

What I'm essentially trying to figure out here.... Is shiki stupidly ahead of the rest of the cast similar to how sol was to the rest of strive, or simply top tier in the way that devil jin was in tekken 7, where beating him was still very possible (earlier in the games life cycle)
No shiki isn’t ahead of the rest of the cast just strong and solid but definitely beatable.

I was at the 4o4 local last Friday scrubbing it out with Arc and I got into a discussion at the end of the night with a Maids player about the strength of Arc.
He thought Arc had lost a lot of what made her unique in previous games and she was really stale in this game. Then I saw this video. Arc has everything she needs to win, but it seems she has to work a little harder than some of the other characters. Then again I could easily be proven wrong.

I still feel her neutral b charge in the corner is busted due to armor and can combo off it . And it counts as a standing overhead.
It’s honestly not that good as a mixup option is very slow. It’s amazing for clashes tho
