    Outstanding, simply outstanding work here. Fantastic writing, and wonderful acting (Congratulations Jeff and Alicia, you hit it out of the park), this is the kind of grounded, hard, cold storytelling that needs to be seen more often in the public eye. In less than 40 minutes, you tell a short story of such rich complexity and detail it simply is unbelievable. Keep up the good work, aching for more!

    One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy.
    Five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret that's never been told.
    (That's the crow rhyme I learned when I was younger.)

      I learned this one.
      One for sorrow,
      Two for mirth
      Three for a funeral,
      Four for birth
      Five for heaven
      Six for hell
      Seven for the devil, his own self

    Wow, this story was really good. A little slow at the beginning, but there's nothing like thorough explanation and a build-up of tension so it didn't ruin it for me. I liked the rhyme too, I believe there's something similar with magpies (but not as ominous, pfft).
    Very good story - and excellent narration; my all-time favourite! It was nice to hear a lady too. Brilliant work!

      ^ Yeah, that's the one - like I said, it's not as ominous, the numbers - and the fact that they're both birds - just reminded me of it, haha.

    • @jessdanielle9878
      @jessdanielle9878 10 років тому +2

      Does kinda make sense though - I think most people are under the impression that nothing is after death. So six = death is where it stops.
      Makes me wonder where all these spooky stories about ghosts and whatnots come from though, haha.

      Actually the original from 1846 had 10 magpie. And goes as follows:
      "One for sorrow,
      Two for luck; (or mirth)
      Three for a wedding,
      Four for death; (or birth)
      Five for silver,
      Six for gold;
      Seven for a secret,
      Not to be told;
      Eight for Heaven,
      Nine for Hell
      And ten for the devil's own sell!"

    • @jessdanielle9878
      @jessdanielle9878 10 років тому +3

      It seems I started a discussion about magpies.
      But if that's the original, then holy crap - maybe it's just as ominous as this crows thing, wow. Thank you for enlightening me!

    One crow is unlucky. Two crows are lucky. Three are health. Four are wealth. Five are sickness. Six is... well, six ain't good.
    My workplace happens to be the regular winter roost for anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 crows. Every night from about November to late February. I suck at math - anybody know what that means? Other than that my car is covered with poop?

    The title, presumably, comes from "One for Sorrow," the same nursery rhyme from which the band Counting Crows also takes its name:
    One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret
    Never to be told.
    But there's a lot of variation, including folk songs and the like that were inspired by versions the composers heard as children. There could very well be a version in which six crows foretell misfortune, but I hadn't heard of it before this story, wherein Marie recites
    One crow is unlucky
    Two crows, lucky
    Three is health
    Four is wealth
    Five is sickness
    Six is death

    That one was actually pretty good. I was going to say something cold about the parents letting their child go off alone in a harsh environment.
    But i realized that they were doomed from the get go. If their relationship and their marriage wasn't in bad shape, they probably would have been a alot more careful in their poor, poor decisions they were making, but then again the character did state that when out in that heat you can't think rationally, and that's probably what added to their problems.

    How did a coyote just up and snatch their little girl,without either parent noticing? Coyotes don't normally behave that way. Not to mention, the girl never screams for help. Then, while their following the blood trail, the mother starts chanting about how” one crow means ...etc, and six crows means death." I agree with the father. I wanted to strangle her too! What mother already assumes her child is dead?! Even if things look grim, a parent still holds out for hope that their child may still be alive especially, without definitive proof that their child is dead. I'm surprised that when they saw the bloody coyote, the mother didn't shout, "a dingo stole (ate) my baby!", like from that movie. I’m joking of course; I know that a dingo is a wild, wolf-like dog and not a coyote.

My family owns 80 acres of land in Oklahoma. Lots of coyotes. I've heard them howl in the distance but I've never come across a pack. I think they like to keep their distance from humans. I guess that one coyote saw that little girl as easy prey, which is why he went after her alone. You two sound great together btw! Loved the story! Alicia has such a pretty voice! Loved it!

      sounds lower right? I do know that in many editing softwares, you're able to lower the pitch of the audio. Maybe that's what they did here to better fit the character of Rick.

    The only poem I know involving crows and numbers, has six as a good thing.
    'One for sorrow,
    Two for joy,
    Three for a girl,
    Four for a boy,
    Five for silver,
    Six for gold,
    Seven for a secret,
    Never to be told.'

    I understand the logic in putting the girl at the top of the hill if the husband slips you wouldn’t want the girl at the bottom and if she’s in the car it just adds more weight for the husband to push I don’t think they were being negligent but then again I’m only halfway through

    I wish this one had a more supernatural twist to it, but that's just my preference, the "realistic" horror stories don't get to me quite as much. My preference aside, I actually did enjoy this one, this was a actually a really good story, I'd listen to more by this author.

    Meh...it was pretty predictable and not really creepy, but I guess it was well written at least. That, or I've just become desensitized to horror stories. I can't find any that really send chills down my spine or make me think, like a good horror mystery.

    I feel like a lot of this could have been easily avoided. I knew that when he told his kid to look for "a bus full of cheerleaders" it was a set up for her to get lost while they corrected the car. The rest just felt forced and way too long. They tried to go for suspense and to build the scene and history but it just felt like filler. I saw where the story was headed the moment he swerved and crashed into a ditch in the middle of nowhere. Not really creepy... just tedious and predictable. But that's just my opinion.

      coyotes are able to smell dead things really well but they will not hesitate to eat things like cats or gophers, in packs I know they have eaten a calf who strayed a bit to far so a small child they wouldn't hesitate if they were hungry

      I grew up in Surrey BC in the early/mid 90's during a time of massive deforestation to make way for suburban housing and strip malls. There were homeless coyotes living in ditches, and even displaced cougars in densely populated areas. There was a series of children who were attacked by coyotes around that time.
      Actually a quick search shows that attacks on dogs by coyotes is ongoing and an attack on a toddler took place in the area only 3 years ago.
      I later moved to a woodsy, mountainous area in BC. The coyotes favourite game was to 'besiege' our house at night. We have several large dogs, only one of whom lives outside. Each night you can hear the coyotes howl out front of the house. Next you hear them howl behind. Then they howl on the other side (we have woods on 3 sides of our house).
      The next time you howl, they are closer. They keep this up almost all night, every night. They haven't done anything but cull a couple cats in the last 10 years however.
