If you know the background behind what fueled the songs for this album, this video makes a lot of sense. Her grandmother who she was very close to passed away. In the video, we see her alone, focused, creating, and chain smoking (when you smoke and you lose someone close to you, they kind of go hand in hand). At one point, we see hands that look kind of feminine, guiding her. Sometimes it looks like she's being followed. The cups start to radiate energy. I like to imagine that this resembles giving something new life and function in the midst of loss. Great video and I love the song!
Hmmm, I didn't get that at all. The scene immediately following the two sets of hands depicts something, at least I thought, blatantly phallic. The person who just caressed her hands is looking on, cigarette lowering as to suggest a thought, both put out their cigarettes and we see a magical dream sequence. I think those folks went off for a quick siesta if you know what i mean.
Exactly! The whole album (Mug Museum) was a celebration of domesticity and the role of the matriarch and how this role is passed down to the next female elder following the loss of her grandmother.
You guys gotta hear her live version at Amoeba records, it's pretty damn amazing. Also, the ashtray reminds me of a line from the book, "Naked Lunch", where he sees an ashtray full of cigarettes and refers to that image as "a mosaic of lost time," or something along those lines. Always thought it sounded cool.
I did a work pottery class five months ago as a work bonding session. I had recently moved to the area. In the car on the way home, we went past somewhere I recognised, where I'd met up with a dear friend on the way home and pointed this fact out to my workmates. When we got back to work, I found out soon after she had died suddenly that morning. As you'd imagine, this song and film clip are a very emotional combination. Love you Eb
Cate. This song makes me feel happy and high. Your voice is stunning and the guitar is glorious.....................I would give my eyetooth to dance with you at some point.
some magazines gave this album an average rate, 3 stars at the most. I'm no so sure they listened to it more than a couple of times, albums are like people, you have to let them grow. at first this album it sounded differentely than it sounds now after 10/12 listening. it's been growning on me....
It alternates between 6 and 8, from line to line (in most sections of the song). No one playing it is going to count the ‘1’ at the beginning of a chord change as a ‘7’… that doesn’t make sense when you think about the composition of the song. Maybe it’s somehow easier to think of those alternating lines of 6 & 8 as being all in 7, if you don’t want to have to think about alternating between 6 and 8 as a drummer, but as a guitarist? Whoa. No way. (Or as The Crowleys said in the reply above me, 4, 2, 4, 4… but my mind just converts that to 6 and 8.)
I am a miserable git who hates almost all modern music.I usually hear one or two songs a year which I stand. This I like a lot...which,trust me is strong praise!
Beautiful skewiff very Welsh song, I heard this in Leon and was struck by its lovely otherworld charm. It reminds me of the Smiths but I don't know why. She could have used the ciggie buts in the pottery to make a ciggie cup! Very soothing video.
I have now listened to this song about 30 times in a row. In my opinion its stunning, beautiful, life enhancing and maybe a wee bit arousing. Cate, please marry me.......or at least meet me for a pint....Im such a romantic.
Extended thoughts on this song, and others of hers at Postmodern Conservative. Am I the only one here who wants to see more of her family... especially the young niece who appears in at least three of her earlier videos? OK, they deserve their privacy and separation -- my point is that the having them in her videos seems so natural and non-gratuitous. But still, one could nearly premise a new series on Cate Le Bon as an auntie....

No, it’s an artistic choice. Read the top comment on this video. It explains Cate’s relationship with her Grandmother (who smoked while teaching her pottery).
I hadn't heard that song before - thanks for mentioning it, I really like it. I don't think I'd call this a ripoff. If Cate had heard it before, she might have borrowed a couple of elements (verse phrasing, descending guitar figure), but that's it. She uses similar guitar figures across her whole album, so perhaps Kim Jung Mi was a key inspiration? I always figured her main inspiration was Television, but maybe not.
Sure, that's why Cate's song has metric modulation (1,2,3,4,1,2,1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4) and Kim Jung Mi's song is in common time. The chord progressions and melodies are also significantly different. The only part that is "ripped off" is the fact they share a similar tempo, instrumentation and a guitar riff before the end of the bar, qualities that are common in many songs and don't indicate plagiarism. I am a huge fan of both albums but to call 'Are You With Me Now' a rip off would be a poorly researched statement lacking in critical thinking and analysis.

This song is a gorgeous, empowering, tear-jerking beauty.

So some people are learning to direct videos, but you're clearly learning how to use written language, and the internet.
The part you're talking about is where she's shaping a mug handle. It's not phallic once you know that. And the other set of hands are female.
I definitely thought this was about her dead grandmother. Glad to see I’m not the only one.
Exactly! The whole album (Mug Museum) was a celebration of domesticity and the role of the matriarch and how this role is passed down to the next female elder following the loss of her grandmother.
"There is a feeling I love' - when I listen to her music...
I'm really missing my Mum right now and this song has me in floods of tears.
You got me man.
love the guitar in this so much
This one goes out to my Son. Miss you much
I love you Cat Le Bon.
Bravo!
Thurston Pike Boswell, I’m here
Love it. Just recently discovered Cate Le Bon. What a talented woman -singer, writer and potter!
I love this. It's calming 👌

Jorge : Cool quote thanks. I may have to read that book again soon.
Whilst smoking of course.
Can't stop playing this, fantastic.
I work at a theater and currently this song plays between shows while I'm cleaning. I fell in love with it and I had to find out what it is called!
I did a work pottery class five months ago as a work bonding session. I had recently moved to the area. Died suddenly, you say?
i associate this song with my parents, they love cate le bon so much and they play this song all the song
A song that always hits me deep... so emotional...
we love cate.
Man does this song smack! The guitar and percussion both are sick again, and the mood and lyrics just make me feel less alone . Beautiful.
Is there not something incredibly satisfying about how she rhymes "reason to run" with "reason"
What a beautiful song and melody. This song have a place in my heart.
I never noticed how fun this bassline is wow
Seriously. About my favourite tune ever. Love the percussion. And obviously the beautiful vocals.
She's fantastic, very original, which is rare nowadays.
This made me feel a lot about my grandparents, dead in their grave or recently.
As a potter, I can definitely appreciate this song and video :))) Very cool!
Gorgeous tune!
there is so much beauty in this, like a concentration of it i've never seen anywhere else besides maybe Licorice Pizza
From Togetherness as well. Beautiful tune!!!
I love love love this! So much beauty
Love this song. Just acquired the album, I really enjoy listening to it last thing at night. Many thanks Cate Le Bon and Turnstile Music.

Somehow, I’m inspired with hope for the future and a new reverence for the past.
Cate. This song makes me feel happy and high. Your voice is stunning and the guitar is glorious.....................I would give my eyetooth to dance with you at some point.

The album is incredible. I don't respect critics, they never create, they just judge those who do.
glam organ 😂 great name !!! btw , I agree with you there🐂🌫️
I'm a drummer and this song, as fantastic as it is, is most certainly in 7/4 time!
I'm a tw@. This is in 6/8 as previously mentioned! :(
+eternalriver I'm counting 7/4
Nope, 7/4
4/4, 2/4, 4/4, 4/4

In case there was any doubt...melody is still king.
The Billboard Hot 100 disagrees with us, sadly.
So true. Melody heals the heart and frees the mind.
But rhythm has an important part to play also.✌🏻
Her voice reminds me of NZ singer Aldous Harding :)
I'd say Aldous reminds me of Cate on certain songs. Cate's been around longer. ;) And Cate reminds me of Nico.
For some reason I can picture this song in a Wes Anderson film
Spot on!
Could you imagine Wes Anderson making something like Ghost but instead of Patrick Swayze it's Betty White?
applehecc Could you imagine Paul Thomas Anderson making “Pottery Nights,” but instead of Mark Wahlberg it stars Bea Arthur?
Does anyone else think of this as a reggae song?
+Brad Field its that bassline and yes
Definitely could be turned into one., and yeah it's the bassline.
it's a bit late but it's neo-folk
This is the strangest pottery making tutorial I have ever seen.
That's because it's actually a poetry writing tutorial.
Vibe in guitar parts reminds me of some Spiders from Mars era Bowie...maybe. a little.
Cool
sounds very early 70's
A good thing.
How does this wonderful song have less than 200 comments? Its so gorgeous!
Superb. Very Morrissey. Absolutely loving it.
My loved ones are still with me.
Ghost pottery wheel cliches aside. ;P
Phil Collins brought me here...such a beautiful song
Could the video's title be changed to "Cate Le Bon - Are You With Me Now?" It would help with scrobbling. Thanks! :)
she's one of the best out, but very hidden
Joseph Aranov you wouldn't know the first thing about being hidden..
@@yourejovian 😂
The cigarettes are an amusing addition.
Does she have a pottery shop online?
reminds me of i dunno cant put finger one it but female artist from 60s

Chase Graham? As in Chase Graham the infamous Floridian dog diddler?!?
does anyone know who the producer is?
from wiki: Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick.
just my hobby!!
Anybody know the time signature for this song?
Think the chorus has a bar of 6 then a bar of 8
@@jackmelling5695 yea, that’s what I keep counting too
@@jackmelling5695 so would the TS just keep changing between 6/4 and 8/4?
@@its_me-nikki just count 6, then 4, then 4

The cigarettes make the video
Phil Collins brought me here
Can't look bad-ass? oh, no worries, just add a alot of cigarettes!
dipro001 i dont think bad-ass was what they were going for
dipro001 ponder why she wrote most of the songs for the album. ..the death of her grandmother.
David Doughan didn't knew that. Found this in a playlist, and the smoking was kinda eye-catching to me. Didn't go through the lyrics.
Serious question: did her grandmother die from cigarette-related lung cancer? Many of that generation did, too many still do.
Yeh , but. . .
cigs are lovely🙄🤡🐂🌫️
Good song..Cigarettes spoil the video..
I guess you are not a golfer
why?
Steven Prestidge It's difficult to give you an answer relating to a forgotten, pointless comment that I posted a year ago.
