Douglas Fairbanks Sr. was an actor that became known for his swashbuckling roles very early on in Hollywood’s Golden Age. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was born in 1909 before his father became famous. Watching his father become famous made Douglas Fairbanks Jr. want to become famous himself, though he claimed up until his death that he fell into the profession of acting by accident. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. wanted his son to get into business. When it became apparent that this wasn’t going to happen, the father threatened to disown his son and cut him out of his will.
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. first started acting at the age of 13, when he signed a contract with Paramount Pictures. Over the course of the 1930s, the actor finally managed to become a star. After several years, it was his high-profile marriage to the similarly burgeoning Joan Crawford that managed to help the actor catch the public’s attention. The 1930s saw Douglas Fairbanks Jr. appear in such pictures as The Prisoner of Zenda and Gunga Din. However, he chose to take a break from acting during the 1940s to help out with the international war effort. He helped run a London hospital for war refugees, which resulted in him getting knighted.
Upon returning from World War II, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. finally got into a business like his father always wanted him to. He managed to secure his father’s begrudging respect, but never his blessing. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Douglas Fairbanks Jr. never got his father’s blessing.

What a handsome and talented man. He sure lived a long and productive life. It's sad when a parent doesn't support their child, especially when his father was an actor.
Never knew about him and Joan Crawford. Thank you for this upload. I learned a lot about him. 😊

Thank you. I am a huge fan of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. It's so irritating to read comments about his father helping him. As you say, quite the opposite. His versatile, detailed, meticulous and natural acting genius is seldom recognized. Having watched most of his movies (many are considered "lost" films) he did everything superbly except sing. A ghost singer in That Lady in Ermine. Comedy, drama, tragedy, action, romance and practically everything in between. Only one each in Westerns (Wild Horse Mesa) Sci-fi (Mr. Drake's Duck) and horror (the disappointing Ghost Story which wasted the talents of Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Melvyn Douglas and John Houseman)
Keep it up. The man is mesmerizing in every film. No one. No one had that charm or the drop dead dazzling smile.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. has never said 1 negative about Miss Crawford! Joan and the other three husbands she had have never spoke badly of her, ever!
Joan was a huge rising star in 1929 and these two were obviously wildly in love, but because of the stature of Doug Sr., & Mary Pickford, they leapt to wrong conclusions. Joan never “took” but gave her all to everyone!!

In those early days acting was not respected profession, very few actors became became famous and even fewer made good money. That may be why his father wanted him to be a businessman or some other respected professional.

From personal experience, don't worry about unaccepting parents. Pursue your future with eyes on what you'll have, not what you don't. Their opinions don't matter once you're financially independent. Find those those that treat even, the least, well.

Deceptive and inaccurate. (is that an AI generated voice? It sounds like it). Douglas Fairbanks Sr. known as the First King of Hollywood WAS initially against his son's giving up education for an acting career. But as you somewhat concede toward the end Senior came around. You say without citation or source half-heartedly and still somewhat hostile. However, Senior's biography by Tracey Goessel published 2016 and titled "the First King of Hollywood", paints a totally different picture. They reconciled and father was supportive. Senior in fact urged Jr. to take the Prisoner of Zenda part. Jr. spoke warmly of his step-mother Mary Pickford and of his father in Jr''s late in life interviews. Your video is gossipy exaggeration for page views. No sources quoted by you predictably. Strictly for Gen Z who'll believe anything because this was all long before their time or in many cases their parents' time.
