    Joan was very beautiful. She was 50 years old in this Password show and yet she had the effervescence and vitality of a young girl.

      I knew her very slightly in the early seventies; she was close friends with my employer, who owned a small boutique on Madison Avenue until 1980. I was about 22 and totally starstruck, and a long time fan of Miss Fontaine's. She and my boss invited me out to a jazz bar in the Village. She was absolutely gorgeous and incredibly charming.

    Fairbanks Jr and Joan Fontaine worked on Gunga Din together in 1939. It was her first major picture and they shot it out in the hot California desert. She suffered from allergies and Cary Grant and Doug were tried to watch their language around her and made sure she always had water and a fan, etc. Years later she told Doug whole time she was sneaking out at night to have get it on with the director who gave her her first big break. She was a-okay.

    I have come to the conclusion that some of the rules for Password are certainly arbitrary. Mary was able to use the word "unscrew" for the word "corkscrew." Yet other times, you can't use part of the word as a clue for the Password.
    Then, Mardi Gras was not allowed for a recent game I was watching, as it's considered two words, but it's clearly one single definition/word and shouldn't be classified that way. Mardi and Gras on their own mean different things than Mardi Gras.
    Another great example is one contestant had used the clue "Santa Monica" which was disallowed. But each one on its own would never denote the city in California. Same with San Francisco. If you just said "Francisco" then that would be a good clue for maybe "Saint?" 🙂 There have been other examples like this.
    THAT said, I absolutely LOVE this show!!! Allan Ludden was legendary and PW certainly is among if not the most thoughtful, intelligent game shows available to watch on UA-cam. Thank you for allowing me to vent my ultimately minor grievances :-)

    • @ShelleySmith-f1z
      @ShelleySmith-f1z 8 місяців тому

      Mardi is French for Tuesday and gras is fat, meaning 'fat tuesday' ...the noun comes before the adjective in French grammar, so it's VERY confusing!! 😮

    When did you use this blue background rather than the purple?

    • @IvoryM1986
      @IvoryM1986 6 років тому

      The blue set was for the NY set and the purple set was for their weeks spent in Los Angeles, CA. I think when Password was in Los Angeles, they were at Studio 31 and noticed, the theatre pit for Studio 31 was already gone.

    Don't worry A Weldon, Password will spend another 4 weeks in Los Angeles with the purple set but the dingbells you hear and the blue box to display the passwords in this episode remain with them from now through the series' end.

    They always tell the 'losing' contestant they will have a lovely gift. I wonder what it was! Sometimes they gave away cameras and told us about it. It's fascinating to see what people won and what was considered a luxury item at the time.

    How did Mary have the opportunity to use the word "Screw" (as part of her clue of "unscrew") for the word "Corkscrew?" I thought you were not allowed to use a section/part of the word in a clue for a word.

    How was "unscrew" not an illegal clue!?

    • @62pianoguy
      @62pianoguy 12 днів тому +1

      Because the ENTIRE word "unscrew" is not contained within the word "corkscrew." Ironically, as Joan Fontaine pointed out, this means that the even shorter word "screw" would not be allowed.
      I agree that it's a somewhat arbitrary, or at least non-intuitive rule.

    • @jovialnobody
      @jovialnobody 12 днів тому

      @@62pianoguy Exactly what I was thinking; 'unscrew' is just the prefix (un) + (screw), (screw) in this case is a full word with a root and meaning and can stand on its own without (un). This is probably one of the most confusing rules on the show for me, and I've seen several celebrities also point out how confused they are by it.
