  • On this episode of Aquapparel TV EFish shows us her grow out shark and stingray aquarium. This aquarium is used as a grow out aquarium. The sharks and stingray have grown out this aquarium and have only been in there for a year or so. The purpose of this video is to showcase some beautiful species while giving you an idea of how quickly you will need to upgrade if you plan on keeping these species. These species were moved shortly after into a pond. You can view the build of the pond and transfer of the species here: • Shark and Stingray Pond

    You can do either or. I choose this set up because it has worked for me in the past. This filtration system maintained all levels at 0. Hob and canisters can be used for both freshwater and saltwater. I would not recommend that anyone use these for a reef tank though. For the sharks and stingray it did great.

    Hi, great video very informative! I have been looking into getting a blue spot stingray for my 600l aquarium I was wanting to know what are the best sites to research these fish? And are the rays wild caught? Thanks!

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  8 років тому +2

      +Ben Hammal Thanks! From my experience they are mostly wild caught and they do not do very well in captivity. I have heard of them breeding but I'm not sure if there is currently a breeder with stock. If you are on FaceBook check out the Shark and Stingray Aquarists group, there are lots of experienced people in there that can point you in the right direction. There is also a husbandry guide that someone in the group can send you a link to. Thank you for caring and doing your research first. :-)

    I would recommend a minimum of 300 gallons. If the aquarium is too small they don't have enough room to swim around and water quality can become an issue. For the black and white shark are you referring to the Epaulette Shark or Coral Cat Shark like the one I have? Check out the pond build video on our channel that we did for my sharks and stingray.

      Tyler Johnson Thank you :-) For the Bamboo Shark at least 1,000 gallons. For the Coral Cat Shark at least 750. The Cortez Stingray would do well in a minimum of 450 with a lot of surface area for swimming.

      +Mike Holla I don't recommend this type of set up as it was used as a temporary housing solution for these animals. For a tank that size, you will need a sump or a large biofilter of some kind. What are you planning on keeping in it?

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  10 років тому

      Hi Bryan, as you can see from the video, aquariums are generally not a suitable habitat to house this species for the duration of their lifespan. A pool measuring 8 feet in diameter can be suitable for a household depending on how many of these species you plan to keep. Remember that their maximum length is 3 and a half feet. Some can even reach around 4 feet in length when full grown. Do a Google search for 8 foot stock tank and that will give you a good starting point.

    what is the minumim of a tank for a coral cat shark when fully grown i have thought about 250 gallon for one coral cat shark

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  8 років тому +1

      +Bruce Davidson IT depends on the dimensions of the tank. Ponds are much better because they offer more surface area. You can comfortably house 2 in the pond that I have with plenty of room. Look for the pond videos on my channel to check it out but make sure that you watch the update for better filtration. Also, make sure that you get a lid that allows for fresh air to get in like the green house roofing that I used.

    Is it better to keep baby bamboo sharks from 150-180 gallon Until they outgrow I intend to keep bamboos in a 2000 gallon aquarium oR 300 Gallon so 150 or 180 are a better nursery tank?

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  4 роки тому

      The wider the tank the better for them. For a grow out 150 or 180 will work until they out grow it, which that species will pretty quickly. 2,000 gallons is an excellent size for a few. Just remember width is better than heigh so that they have a lot of room.

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  5 років тому

      Yes, to remove excess waste, keep the ph balanced and a whole other list of reasons. I would start with a basic aquarium if you have never had one before. I started with freshwater, then saltwater fish only and built by way up from there. There are tons of books out there that you can learn everything that you need to know before you start. I highly recommend reading up on both freshwater and saltwater before you make any purchases.

      @Aquapparel  10 років тому

      Anders Holder Thanks :-) yeah I know :-/ The whole purpose of this video was to showcase the species and to show how big they get in such a short period of time. To grow out baby sharks and stingrays like we did in this aquarium works temporarily and provides a good environment for monitoring them while they grow. However, as a shark owner you know that they grow very quickly and that the most important thing is to have a suitable habitat ready to go for them for when they outgrown the aquarium. It's very refreshing to connect with other shark hobbyists like yourself who do the right thing :-) Where did you find the 800 gallon pool? What brand is it? Thanks for the lighting info. You don't see them in the pond video but we are using submersible LEDs that we mounted with coral glue to the sides of the pond and they work great. We will be posting a pond update video soon so stay tuned. We are now subscribed to your channel, looking forward to your updates. :-)

      @Aquapparel  Рік тому

      After the initial growth spurt they have another one at about a year where they thicken up a bit and by year 2 they are fully grown from what I have seen. You don't want to wait until that milestone to move them into the main tank though.

    • @Aquapparel

I only used this tank to grow out the sharks and stingrays which took less that a year. Check out the Shark and Stingray Pond video on this channel to see what they were upgraded to. I love how you put that you're experienced. If that were the case then why do you have them in a rectangular tank? That's the #1 NO for sharks as they will bump their noses in the corners of the tank. -.-

      Hi There, I address this in the video but for benthic sharks like these, the rectangle shape will not harm them.
