    Shark and Stingray Pond. On this episode of Aquapparel TV EFish and Keegan Black of Black Sea Aquatics build a 300 gallon above ground shark and stingray pond. Watch as they transfer the Brown Banded Bamboo Shark, 2 Coral Cat Sharks and Halleri Stingray into their new home. The build of the pond only took 2 days but getting the water ready for the sharks and stingray took a little over a week. On this episode watch from start to finish the entire process.

    The pond is the most affordable solution that I have found. The other solution is a large round acrylic aquarium which you might need to get custom made and can be very expensive but it does give you a great view. Remember, if you are going to keep sharks and stingrays you have to put their needs first since you are responsible for their well being. With the pond you can still view them very well in addition to giving them the proper space that they need.

    Amazing tutorial! I have a 500 gallon shark & Ray tank w/spotted rays, butterfly rays, bat rays, as well as banded bamboo, coral, & 1 smooth grey hound. Id love to have a big pond I always told myself I was gonna go big enough for a Black Tip but the $3,500.00 price on the shark alone not counting the pond & equipment made me 2nd guess lol

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  5 років тому

      Thanks! I don't recommend a Black Tip Reef Shark. They get way too big and need a ton of room in order to swim. The benthic species like the ones in this video are much easier to care for in captivity. They are not very active though, they mostly just lay around and hang out.

    They were in a 120 gallon and out grew it in a little over a year. Check out the EFish's 120 Gallon Shark and Stingray Aquarium video on our channel to see how big they got. For cat sharks I would recommend a Coral Cat Shark which is the black shark with the white spots in the video. For stingrays make sure that you research and can properly ID one before you buy it and bring it home because some get really big. The Halleri and Cortez are ideal size but they need a lot of room to swim.

    Hi, Sure.
    1. Get a 20 gallon food grade safe trash can by Rubbermaid and drill holes all along the sides to about 3 inches under the handle.
    2. Place a magflow pump (minimum 1400 gallons per hour) in the bottom of the trash can.
    3. Get a PVC pipe and cut it so that one piece goes on the pump output and the other can be used as a spray bar the way we assembled it in the video. Get 2 elbow pieces for the ends as well.
    4. Get some egg crate, cut and zip tie it together to form the media baskets.

  • @Aquapparel
    @Aquapparel  11 років тому

    5. Fill up the media baskets and place live rock in the trash can to hold the filter and media baskets in place.
    Since this video we added an external Ehiem 2217 canister filter for more bio, 2 powerheads to help with the flow and we used coral glue to glued some underwater LEDs to the inside walls of the pond for day lights.

    Being in the living area in the house, how do you go with humidity in the room/house? are you doing anything to keep humidity down?
    do you find that the pond (not having lids) allows a lot of extra evaporation than a traditional aquarium? and again creating a lot of humidity? and potential mould problems on your ceiling?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  8 років тому

      +Alex Kantor The pond has had lids since the beginning, they are just not featured in this video. Check out the update video on this channel to see what they look like. The lids work great for this pond, but you could also use a dehumidifier. It's important to note that you need to have a lid that allows for air to enter the pond. So make sure that you use something like the green house roofing. It's very important.

    what were the dimensions of the pond? also how do you do your maintenance, daily/weekly such as water changes and maintenance of your filter.

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  8 років тому +1

      +MultiMrDrago Check out the update video on this channel. The pond is 5 feet by 6 feet and about 2.5 to 3 feet high.The maintenance depends on feeding, the amount and size of the species that you keep, the amount of biological filtration that you have, etc. Make sure that you test your water at least once a week and do water changes as needed. Remember that it is better to under stock the pond (keep less species in it). Under stocking the pond is what's best for the animal's well being too.

    • @Aquapparel
      @Aquapparel  8 років тому

      +RED TAIL Gecko Each set up will be different, but you want to watch your water parameters to ensure that your filtration is working efficiently. You also want to do water changes as needed, change your filter media and mechanical filtration as needed as well. I definitely don't recommend keeping sharks and stingrays if you do not have saltwater aquarium experience. Start with a fish only tank first.

    • @kassousminou
      @kassousminou 7 років тому

      With enough filtration power in your pond, you should only have to do water changes every time it is needed (check your water parameters). I also recommend using a water changer device (such as python hose). It makes the water changes much easier and less messy. But you need to make sure you are using the right water when refilling, especially with a water changer. Also, make sure you stay up to date on your filter media care (rinsing the sponge every few weeks, changing the chemical medias if you use them, etc.). Get a proper cycle going and your pond should now be much less of a hassle to keep clean ;)
