I felt the need to record this video as a reminder for us photographers. If you don't do what I mention in the video, you’ll never be creatively happy and you're going to end up frustrated. I've been guilty of not doing it lately but I already put a solution to it! I hope this video helps you and you get some inspiration. Comment below what's your opinion about this. When was the last time you did photography just for yourself? ❤
I think as I started really wanting to take photos. It's still with me I guess.
Every week all year long, last time was Friday, I am happy just thinking of my Camera gear, I watch both my old and new photos every week, photography makes me really happy - as a hobby amateur. When I was a professional Photographer it was not always a joy, so my advice, if you love photography, do not get pro !
I try every moment possible when I see something I like, but the most I enjoyed was during my honeymoon at august. Travelled around Italy in places some of them less known for tourism, so sometimes they actually were kind of wild looking🤩😍☺️
I wish I could add some personal photos for you all to see. Life is more than just work. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas!

Such a good video! It is so important to shoot for yourself & also printing your work.I particularly love your videos when you travel & South & Central America is so under discovered by photographers & travelers. I lived in South America for a while.

We must make time for ourselves in order to not lose our sense of "self".
Looking into the emotional investment of your own personal photo collection let's you see that photos are more than just "posed pretty pictures", which, in the end, will help you do better work for your client.

LOVE this vid! I completely agree that it's so easy to just stop doing it for the 'enjoyment' of it. Starting to shoot film really helped me to get back out there and shoot for myself :)
While I still consider myself in the beginning path towards making this a career. What has helped with not being so singular career minded is that I early on started collaborating with cosplayers. They're the type of people that aren't really looking to make money or become massive on social media. They do it as a pure creative outlet. Their passion gives me inspiration and I it gives me the added goal of not coming up with shots that will make my work look good but, also highlights their artistic expression.
I'm also and friends make fun of me for it because on trips I'm known to just disappear and wander off. Like on a trip to Utah, I disappeared for the afternoon to where I just went off by myself and shot and that level of taking the time to just walk and absorb the environment around me either in nature or in an urban setting and see where it takes me has made all the difference creatively.
Hello Laura. First off let me say that I’m a BIG fan of your work. I got back into photography just over 2 years ago after a 35yr hiatus as I’ve decided to make it my second career (retirement). My business is starting to take off especially given the demands of my full time job.
I agree wholeheartedly that you should foster balance between paid work and personal work. I’ve found that soooo much more is learned as I’m not as tied to meeting client requirements and am open to experimentation and learning more about my gear and its capabilities.
Back in the day, you had to print EVERYTHING. That mindset follows me today as I work to a print-ready standard. The photobook is a great idea. I’m planning to pick my best from each of my past two years to chart my growth and experiences. I just wish I was a beautiful as yourself to warrant so many self-portraits 😉.

About 5 years ago, I started printing out some of my best work. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't done it. It was a learning experience - helping me dial in to a higher standard of processing. Prints can magnify flaws that you might not notice just looking at the computer. Plus, it's cool to be surrounded by your favorite work!
Great video Laura! Thinking of all the opportunities documenting life, I look at my phone and camera backups through the years. There are thousands of photos we take everyday, store them somewhere, and forget about them. And the reason behind it is the social platforms and world we’re living that require to make more and more content day after day. Photography is not completed until it is printed on paper and one of the best ways to document life, is to create photo books with the places we’ve been. Personally, I try to create photo journals because I like writing as well. Thank you for the inspiration and wishing you best of luck with all your new adventures!

I always shoot for myself, I have never had clients. When I'm good enough I maby have clients one day, maby not. It depends on how much my ME/CFS-brain will manage in the future. Photography and my dog is the only activity I prioritises in my life. 🙂
The reason I started watching your channel is because I started taking photos for myself and my wife. Maybe, I'll make a living from taking photos . . . but thank you for the reminder. I started taking photos because I wanted to remember a moment in time.

brilliant video we make the grandparents a calendar as a Christmas present mainly pic of the grandkids on different outings with them that sort of thing and we have a beautiful cushion with a pic of my father inlaw with my two boys , its all the more special now that he is no longer with us !! Yesterday I was in Manchester doing a Wild In Art trail and yes I got photos of the art for my wife but she spent the whole day pointing out shots that I had missed so I got just as much out of the day as she did.

How do you get the pictures of yourself? Do you take them or someone else?
I take them myself. They’re self portraits. 🥰 I use either a remote shutter or the camera app in my phone to shoot remotely. In the ones I show in the album, I used a small remote. 😊

great video Laura, do refer to some great cinematographers for inspiration, slowly growing and keeping with some of the 6K and 8K developments, short form video is still in demand, (smartphone to Z8 or sony a7r V) informative content.
