I was a child in a white evangelical church and was attending that church in 1973 when Roe v. Wade determined that women had a Constitutional right to abortion. There was not one peep from anyone about it. No fiery sermon, no call to arms and rallies, in fact, crickets. I never heard a sermon against Democrats, or gay people, or against the acceptance of diversity. They talked about one thing: "Accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, and letting him guide your life." That was it. That was all. I went back to that same church as a person on the edge of retirement several years ago and was shocked. It had become a cruel, unbending, intolerant place. THEY are the ones who changed.

Exactly. Makes you wanna throw the baby out with the bath water - but that church is one congregation and replacing Jesus with trump for “our way of life” is tribal egotism. I’m almost an atheist but I still consider (human) Jesus my hero because he walked his talk as he understood. If you like - try reading RESCUING THE BIBLE FROM FUNDAMENTALISM by John Shelby Spong. And there are plenty of congregations and denominations to choose from….. a few don’t fuss about the shakedown AKA as the salvation offer (you can’t refuse…) that’s exactly why Christianity in America literally has hundreds of denominations. Ask with your heart and your life will intersect with possibilities.Blessings to you and loved ones and see you voting day!😊😊✌️✌️🙏🙏❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

He was a major figure in the American Revolution and therefore counted by many as an unsung hero, but he also owned 2 plantations worked by slaves and owned the Charleston Wharf where a huge number of slaves were moved through. So his connection with slavery was much more than just the slaves he personally owned. The flag he made for the first Marines should have actually read "Don't tread on a white person".

Been living in the bible belt for 20 years and this has been going on for quite some time - there are many - co-existing themes/grievances that found mutual utility . the lost cause / white supremacy / right wing talk radio found a willing partner in the rapidly diminishing church and have attempted to blend together some type of mutated coherent theology . Immediately following 9/11 i began hearing a lot of very angry retribution talk coming from the religious crowd - and expressing the need for war - retribution to defend christian values - and I remember thinking - these people are exactly like Osam Bin Laden's crowd - fanatics - - they come at it in a different language and from a different book but they are the same - fanatics are fanatics . It was so obvious all the policy options they were professing were exactly the theocratic rule that was decided at the root of them attacking US mainland . In 2002 a publicly elected official declaring that this is a religious state and there is no such thing as a separation between church and state affairs in this country would have been put in a straight jacket - today they do it all the time .

Bigotry, sexism, racism, homophobia, etc..., none of these things are found anywhere on the Christian moral spectrum (one way or the other). They exist as nodes on the antichristian satanic moral value system and have been imposed upon former Christendom. Racism isn't real and doesn't exist. Same with bigotry, sexism and the rest. The Christian Nationalists have an answer to your question, and, as always, they are absolutely certain they are right. Their answer is that they are entitled to rule because they are Christians who have the “one true religion.” Their God has been transformed from a soft-spoken middle-eastern Jewish carpenter into a blonde, blue-eyed, white-skinned Caucasian who exemplifies the racism that is the foundation of their right to rule. They declare that they are trying to “save” everyone by imposing, and enforcing, conservative Christian principles and rules onto the entire nation. Over time I had come to learn that this church had been telling her some crazy things, and she got very defensive whenever we tried even the slightest bit to discuss it with her. Then once while visiting her I saw she had brought home several pages of literature extremely negative towards gay people. I asked her about it and she went off on how they were sent by Satan, are converting our kids etc etc. About a year later she went on a group tour somewhere (not with the church) where after she returned told me that the tour guide was a gay man and that she was very surprised, he was so NICE. She said she had expected a demon. I am happy she was able to experience that before passing on a couple of years later.

So the church is removed, now France seems to be ruled by a class of metropolitan Parisiens educated at one academie or another in... Paris. If it walks and talks like the Roman Catholic Church, it might well be the Roman Catholic Church, albeit in a different cloth. If it behaves like royalty, it might be because it thinks it has a droit divin to rule. There's nothing new under the sun really, only the outer appearances change. Ask any Frenchman what he thinks of the Parisien administrative and industrial elites and comparissons with le Roi du Soleil and church magistrates are likely to follow.
People often do not see why populism and suppremacist ideology root so well in the peripheries, because that'[s where people see every day evidence that they're being left behind. And that is the main problem that feeds resentment. Whether that is channeled through religious or nationalist extremism, is a matter of external appearance. The resentment is key.

There was a time when I was a Christian. When I served in the Army, I remember attending a Prayer Breakfast, and not really knowing of its origins at the time. But as time went on, I became more and more wary of religion in general, and soon quit going to church and eventually becoming an Atheist. I think it was because of the company I was keeping at the time I was a Christian, but because I started to pay attention, I saw it for what it was, or really, saw people who were utilizing religion to suit their agenda, which did not look like what a true Christian should be, like my late husband. He was a true Christian because he did not boast, was prideful, or blatantly exclaim his religious beliefs. He also leaned liberal, but he never voted in his life. To me, he was a true definition of a Christian; truly remarkable since he chose to stay with me despite me being an Atheist, and he never judged me because of it and vice-versa.

Black Codes were introduced, and Chain Gangs, and high rates of Black incarceration by white juries, to make sure the former slaves 'knew their place' and knew the regime had not even faltered. And today the Confederacy is back, heavily armed, heavily infused with a desire for vengeance, ready to bring down everything the northerners stood for, which includes Enlightenment values, those values that were against slavery and white supremacy. To the South, the Civil War is still the War Of Northern Aggression. But now they think they can win it.

Things actually have changed however. Today you have mass media which can expose the CN fanatics so as to turn public opinion against them very quickly. As to "heavily armed" = Pfft! Hunting rifles do not fare well against armored vehicles and indirect fire weapons.
Moral of the story: any of these LARPing "militias" insane enough to try to start anything would quickly become cannon fodder. Their neighbors would turn against them and government forces would overrun them.
p.s. - they live under the deluded illusion that a minority of the country during the American Revolution actually fought to succeed. That is _faux_ history however. The Continental Army had the support of most of the nation while they had a large amount of assistance from others. I'm a Christian-- Episcopalian, a comparatively liberal slice of the Church.
I'm very grateful for that, too, since it means that I'm fully allowed to make my own adult decisions about much of life-- including politics.
Christian nationalism is a myth, theologically unjustified and completely unsound, a movement based in power lust and in no way imitative of Christ himself, or the canon, or the history of the Church, or in any logic either.
The Christian Church exists apart from secular concerns insofar as they involve power in the world, rather being a matter of serving human beings in charity and helpfulness-- leaving the arguments for control to the secular powers that be.
The New Testament is unambiguous about the role of believing people in the larger world.
We are directed to love, to serve, and to exemplify Christ in the world, which is, and always will be, a foreign place and something largely opposed to the Christian faith, practically and philosophically-- for obvious reasons: Christ gave away power, refused to fight or become violent in seeking power, saw power as in fact belonging to God and no one else, and sacrificed himself, in spite of fully possessing the power to destroy his enemies, while in the world, the ferocious collecting of power and wealth and influence means that the last thing anyone will be willing to do is to give power away! Exactly the opposite.
Therefore, there is no denying that there is absolutely no resemblance between Jesus Christ and the character of Christian nationalism we're discussing here. It simply doesn't exist.
Christian nationalism is the contemptuous highjacking of a beautiful faith by sadistic extremists who confuse toxic masculinity with religious enthusiasm.
If they really did intend to imitate Christ, which is in fact the first goal of any professed Christian, they never would have come anywhere near the catastrophic miasma we're witnessing today in conservative evangelical Christianity in America.
They use Christ, as legitimacy, and as religious certification, and as an all-powerful reference point, all the while defying each instruction he has given them. In other words, while the faith directs us to be "used of God", these people are using God.
That's rather dangerous, aside of being shockingly stupid and completely disrespectful to God himself.

For us in Europe, we are at loss to understand why Americans are so religious. We are largely atheist in Europe, where religion plays no part in politics and is a personal matter that you wouldn't bother other people with.
All religions are not based on fact or evidence, they are belief movements of faith. They all eventually fade away and will be forgotten about. Nearly 3000 years of deep held beliefs by Egyptians are now just an historic curiosity. We dont worship Ra anymore, or Zeus or Odin. This will be the fate of Islam, Christianity and all the current world faiths, given a long enough period of time. God does not exist and never will do. There's only us in nature.

Lets just twist things for the power and money of the flock! I became an atheist about 40 years ago because a minister was putting ideas into my children's head that was not even common sense and the same minister, which was the final straw for me, was having marital issues and was......I'll say was being done in a strange way as we were leaving the church. He began just going off about how his wife wasn't doing things as he felt she should at home and in the bedroom which was weird as hell to be honest. I was brought up in Lutheran and Presbyterian churches and went to a parochial catholic school during my elementary years. So pretty much my point of view is that its all a power/money engine using something unproven that was written a couple thousand years ago! When this "religion" stuff is used to go against others in their beliefs whether religion, race, gender or actual science facts is used to step on others, sounds like a power struggle to me!
