Lot of people are calling for it to reopen with the whole F express thing about, the platform would lack full time service but will do some good. Bergen is heavily used.
@@PeruvianPotato A now exists that runs express in Brooklyn in the peak direction - 2 AM trips from Coney Island and 2 PM trips to Coney Island. I hope to live long enough until these vast tunnels are in a videogame. I get nightmares about this still not existing in a videogame. I'm talking underground subway system, abandoned stations, abandoned lines, sewers and maintenance tunnels.
Silent hill 3 literally has a Bergen St station. When Jacobs Ladder was filmed here in the 90s & the creators of silent hill took huge inspo from it for sh 2 so they put the station in 3 as an easter egg!
If F express service is reinstated, the Bergen Street lower level will not be rebuilt and it will effectively be a local station. Trains will go directly from Jay Street MetroTech to 7th Ave, and then directly to Church Ave.
In the 80's this station was still being used once in a while. I'm surprised it wasnt reopened. Been down there so many times to hang out, bomb it but lower Bergen always looked run down. They use to lay up down here especially the snow cars, when it would snow they would lay up down there to prevent them from freezing in the yard, but that was mid 70's to early 80's.
Yes, I remember the train stopping there a few times in the 80s and even early 90s. My family and I were forced to either get off there or continue to 7th Avenue in Park Slope.
Considering that Bergen Street is a heavily use station, along with the now reinstated service. It makes sense to reopen the express lower level since the last time it was operated was in 1976.
I don’t suppose this station is still open. I recognize graphitty from the early sixties. I thought I saw a tall skinny figure wearing a black tunic from skull to toe bones lurking behind one of the columns.
The lower level platforms serve the express tracks and are bypassed as they’re abandoned. On the Culver Line, the local tracks are a continuation of the Crosstown Line and the express tracks are a continuation of the Sixth Ave Line’s local tracks. There are switches connecting the local tracks to the Sixth Ave Line but no tracks connecting the express tracks to the Crosstown Line. So it seems like it makes sense to have F trains run express on the Culver Line full-time, which can also eliminate F and G trains merging with each other. This station was also well-known for customers waiting in stairwells to see whether the first train to Manhattan arrives on the local track or the express track, since both local and express trains merged with each other north of the station. This could’ve easily been fixed with the countdown clock showing which platform the next train to Manhattan arrives on, although it would be unnecessary if the F and G don’t merge, since all trains on the local tracks would head to the Crosstown Line and all trains on the express tracks would head to the Sixth Ave Line. However, this would make it impossible to travel between Jay St-MetroTech and Bergen St, since Bergen St’s express platforms are abandoned. There is a seemingly simple fix, that being restoring Bergen St’s express platforms to allow express trains to stop there. However, this is expected to cost around $75 million. As a result it’s currently not a priority despite the benefits.
The current plan for restoring F Express service is for this level to not be reopened and for express trains to bypass it, essentially turning it into a local station. I wonder if reopening it would reduce complaints since passengers at this station could get on both local and express trains and transfers from the G train to express trains could be made.
The F Express only operates in the peak direction (some trains in the AM to Manhattan, some in the PM to Coney Island). Opening the lower level for that would be pointless.
I just realized that these stations aren’t maintained, meaning that there is lots of gunk and shit in the middle, so the stayed away from the middle to avoid that stuff
Probably not. I drive trains and I see people all the time. As long as they aren't crossing the tracks in front of me I don't worry. By the time I'd call it in and have someone dispatched to the area you're probably already long gone.

Yes I would like further clarification as well. It can certainly be re-tiled, so that can't be it. There does seem to be some sort of a leak or drainage issue.
When the upper level was renovated, the renovation damaged the lower level (water leaks, et al) so all of the tile was removed. The station seems like its in pretty good shape. The real problem is that there's not much demand for an express service here. The express tracks start at Jay Street/Boro Hall and run through Carroll Street into Bergen Street lower. They then run outside over the Gowanus Canal Bridge, past Smith-9th Streets and 4th Avenue station. They go back into tunnel at 7th Avenue. In addition, if Bergen Street lower was ever reopened, it would have to be ADA-compliant, meaning that the MTA would have to install an elevator connecting the street level with both station levels. I don't see the MTA spending that kind of money on labor costs for this station.
i thought this was once inhabited by m and r trains, while the e and f trains would stop at this lower level. that wasn't until i realized that this was a Brooklyn stop served by all F and G trains, and also once served by a train.

@Charlie Connor It served express trains from 1968 until 1976 (F trains would run express during the rush hours). This service proved unpopular and express service on the Culver Line ceased (until it was restored partially in 2019).
You have to walk the tracks from the previous stop, and follow the set of express line tracks below the main route of Bergen Street Station on foot. There is no way to access Lower Bergen Street Station from (Upper) Bergen Street Station itself... save for the steel double doors that lead down there. But good luck opening those, and heading down there without either the MTA, NYPD, or some civilian that likes to nark on his fellow civilians catching you. If those doors are even unlocked in the first place to begin with, anyway.
I wonder if this abandoned Bergen Street station lower level needs to be rehabilitated and add some lighting and put new walls and remove a bunch of graffiti writing which is a great idea to make it clean. It can also be use as a shelter to prevent natural disasters.
What kind of ridiculous question is that? In the case of the main steel double doors that you see in the stairwell, they don't because that door leads directly into the crowded upper platform of Bergen Street Station. It'd be stupid to do so. An NYPD cop could spot you, or an MTA employee could spot you, leading to you being charged with criminal trespassing! And even if no MTA or NYPD folks spot you, there's always some "warrior of justice" civilian that feels the need to nark on everyone else about anything they spot them doing (legal or not), simply because it makes them feel better about themselves. If a nark can find a cop or MTA employee before you get the Hell out of Dodge by leaving the station, you're also pretty likely to get charged with criminal trespass.
