We finally tackle the biggest project in the shop - the cabinet wall! This video is the start of that journey and represents the first of many in this series. We build the cabinet carcasses that make up the upper cabinets of this custom build. The upper cabinets will serve as simple (much needed) storage for the shop but also ties into the lower cabinets which will incorporate dust collection, tons of drawers, and a miter saw station hybrid. This build is going to be really cool and I'm looking forward to seeing the final product!
I guide you though how I chose to build my simple cabinets using the ever-so-popular pocket holes screw joinery method. This is extremely accessible to anyone wanting to build cabinets. The goal of this series and my channel as a whole, is to share with you the journey I'm on in pursuing "shop greatness." Why does this come up in Hong Kong Dollars?
The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.
Perhaps a hint for your next wall cabinet build. The french cleats are a nice touch but use a loonnngg ledger board when putting up the wall side cleat. That way all of your cleats are in a perfect line. When all the cleats are up, take down the ledger board and use it on the next wall. And don't ask me how I came by this bit of wisdom.... Good job!
Great video! When I was a kid back in the 60’s 70’s my Dad had a great work shop in our basement. I have not had a work shop since then, however, my wife and I are preparing to move and I plan to replicate my Dad’s shop in our new house. I’m a visual learner, so thank you for all of the tips in building your cabinets!

As someone who grew up watching This Old house and (with Norm Abrams) New Yankee Workshop, I appreciate this refrence.
We also went with Gladiator Garage Works here. Love the durability and endless, re-organizational flexibility, especially when you install their GearWall panels on full walls. We also found a number of immaculate, used Gladiator cabinets and tool chest models online! But I also admire the way your shop is looking, and appreciate the build lessons as I set up a garage woodshop.
Getting a lot of inspiration from this channel as I am currently remodeling my shop. Jay Bates wood storage roller cart. Just built one life saver.

Great job so far. When I did my first set of uppers I also used the French cleat hanging system... but I left the backs flush and made the cleats as long as I could so I hit more studs making the system stronger. Then on the far left and far right cabinet I made the outer sides longer to cover up the cleats.
My most recent wall of uppers I put a strip of 3/4” plywood, 12” wide between the studs and behind the drywall so I didn’t have to be so concerned about hitting the studs. I also cut my French cleats on this batch to fit each cabinet.

I am in the middle of designing and building my upper kitchen cabinets, and wanted to include a French cleat system for mounting, but didn't figure out yet how to hide them. Your method is perfect, and thinking about it now, I will only have to adjust one end because the other one will be flush to a wall. Bingo!

Little tip for the 3/4" offsets: Cut a couple of 3/4" square pieces out of your scrap to act as jigs. Clamp them in place, flush with the edge of the cabinet, and but your panels up against them. Flawless everytime.

So that's how they drill the pins inside the cabinets! I thought this whole time people did it by using actual measuring tape or rulers. I honestly learned something new today!

Next time you use french cleats, nibble off the sharp 45 deg angle from both the wall and cabinet side cleats. It'll make the cleat registration perfect every time, and will eliminate any chance of a little dust or an imperfect cut from messing with it.

If you make cabinets you will want to use a program like "Cutlist" to utilize your material or keep the grain oriented the same dírection. It's super easy after a little messing around and will run your pieces through 100,000s of possible orientations to provide the least waste.

Nice clear instructions man, thanks! I like the little Kreg Jig setup you did midway through the video, its one of those things I've been meaning to get to but never have. I bet it makes life a little easier in the shop haha. I'm currently building a miter saw station with some 3/4" ply and the kreg jig, hoping to get that video posted on Monday but who knows!

Steve Ramsey would paint them purple lol. I would keep them natural color and clearcoat them or use boiled linseed oil. Nice work cant wait for the next video.

For the cabinets with a board in the middle of them, how do you secure those? Brad nails and glue? Or pocket holes in the spacer board. I should probably just buy the plans lol
