    it might take more time making the cabinets one at a time but like he said, it's easier to hang the thing. I custom built my kitchen cabinets. The upper section of the cabinet that attaches to the ceiling was nearly 8 feet long. It took me, my father, and two neighbors to get it up on the wall.
    I really like the cleats for the cabinets also. Just an easy off and on system. I am looking for a different shelving system for the garage. I've looked at suspended shelves, 2x4 systems, and now yours. I like yours because I can build the cabinets that will look just terrific in the garage. Well, back to the table saw for another project.
    Thanks for the idea.

    I am brand new to anything woodworking and about to turn 60. When I first saw your video about “French cuffs”, I thought this is about shirts..... ha! Everything is brand new to me. 😊 I am having so much fun. Watching this video is such an inspiration to me! I am planning my French cuff shelves now. Thank you SO MUCH! You rock!

    How fortuitous, I was just trying to figure out a good way to attach some different size and style shelves I was given so that I could still change them around as needed yet make sure they were strong, level and secure, the French cleat is the perfect solution, Thank you, I painted them all the same color and added different elements to the ones with doors, like metal lathe and peg board for hooks, metal sheeting to use magnetic containers for my bits and bobs (found mine on eBay and Amazon, usually sold for spices) and white board for lists, reminders and notes, thanks again 💗

    You did in one day what would have required me to do in a week ... or more. Nice job.
    1:04 -- I hadn't previously seen that little jig for drilling pocket holes. Cute. Learned somethin' new.
    BTW, very encouraging for Northerners to see someone walking around in shorts during February.

    I don't think most people realize just how awesome those French Cleats really are, though anyone who's had to mount cabs to the wall the "old" way sure will. I ran into something similar with some Ikea cabs (not all Ikea cabs do this), where they have metal rails that mount to the wall. It saves a *lot* of hassle trying to get everything aligned, level, etc., when you're only holding up a lightweight rail to mount to the wall. Locating stud centers is a snap that way. Sure, you lose a small space behind the cabs, but it's well worth it IMO. I also like your use of the pocket screws. They make for a secure attachment that doesn't ruin the appearance. I'd criticize the lack of planning in not backing the cabs before mounting, but you clearly realize that was a mistake. Overall, great work, with intelligent adjustment to the plan as you went along, and well presented. Thanks for another great video.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Bruce! Yes, that was an oversight on the backing... was trying to not have to use another piece of plywood... and I had originally planned to direct mount them with no french cleats.
      .. and yes, I really like the metal style ones that Ikea and some other places use... makes a lot of sense :)

    • @BruceS42
      @BruceS42 6 років тому

      I don't know that I'd even bother with plywood for that. A heavy cardboard, like Ikea uses, should suffice, possibly just tacked onto the back of the frame. I think the decision to use the cleats rather than direct mounting was a good one. Next time I need that sort of cabinetry, I think I'll just spend some time with my table saw and plywood rather than buying Ikea goods. You've inspired me!

  • @huffster6344

    Since you're familiar with the kreg jig, check out their fence/rail systems. The fence on my miter saw uses a wood fence with their top track, which multiple stops can be mounted to. I recessed their t-track into the top of the work surface and it holds the fence. When the fence isn't needed, loosen the fence and push it back out of the way or remove it completely. Nice work.

    I always like it when folks use pocket screws because it makes project seem more doing for my current skill level. My tools are limited so I am thinking that the home store can cut my plywood down to my desired shelf depth and the rest I can finish with my tools (and without a truck the smaller pieces are easier to move). Thanks for a great video and sharing.

      Thomas Lindgren Both Lowe’s and Home Depot have lengths of 8, 10, 12, and 16 inch deep shelving planks which you can easily cut to length with a circular saw. Some of the planks even come with a white melamine finish, so all you would need is some iron-on edge banding, also at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  6 років тому

      Thomas Lindgren thanks Thomas! Yes your home store will likely be able to rip the pieces..first 2-3 cuts are free and then they may charge..but I doubt it😀

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  6 років тому

      Thomas Lindgren oh yes, and David made a good point about the precut shelving stock. It will be a bit more expensive but ready to go...however, just make sure to get solid wood and not the particle board stuff...it isn’t as strong. Would be fine for the shelving portions but I would use solid wood or plywood for the main structure of the unit😀

    Hello sir. Your job is well done. Sorry if my English is not good, but I am Belgian. I did the same job as you, but I closed the back of the cabinet entirely. I put a small shutter on the front and wheels. A ring on the top. Then I attached an electric winch to the ceiling which allows me to lower or mount my cabinet and use it as a toolbox on wheels. I hope you understand everything I wrote! HAHAHA

    Just found your channel. Really liking the shipping container shop and all that’s going with it.
    I am often against using pocket screws but it is usually because people use them to join everything. Your usage is ideal in the sense that you are essentially joining endgrain to edgegrain where a screw won’t hold in the edge of plywood very well.
    My brother made a laminated top like yours using 2x4 and threaded rod. It is certainly a very very solid work surface and will be a very secure base for a vice.
    Your miter station has the flip up similar to what I want to have on the one I still need to build so I can extend and support longer pieces outside my garage door.

    Next time you rip angled cuts on your table saw, put the fence on the other side of the blade since your blade tilts to the right. The way you did it in this video the wood can bind in between the fence and the blade and kick back pretty easily. I'm really not a huge safety preacher but I've personally had that happen to me

    I love the french cleats. Great video... I use a carbide circular saw to cut aluminum much easier than a grinder. I have cut 1/2" aluminum plate (5 feet long cuts) with a 18V makita circular saw with good quality carbide tip saw blade. This would not work with sheet steel since steel has a higher strength and work hardens!

    Great video! Thank you! I loved how you didn’t use a clamp to hold the kreg jig. And I haven’t even finished watching the whole video but wanted to comment right away.

      C Seager thanks! Lol...I just think it goes way faster that way. If I was using a harder wood I might but usually just a bit of pressure is all it takes...thanks for checking it out😀👍

    my brother has some cabinets on the wall and he added a magnetic strip on the bottom to keep jars of screws or washers of projects he was working on.

      Tony Banner I like that idea...I’ve got about a 1/2 inch space under these where I could conceal something like that😀

    Very nice. Tough to beat plywood for strength.. I would consider adjustable shelves for versatility and ease of install. Keep up the good work

      Neal Matson Thanks Neal! Yes plywood is pretty darn stout...and yes adjustable shelves would definitely as a bit of customization for things too. Thanks for checking it out😀👍🏻

    Would like to suggest making the shelving adjustable. Nothing more annoying when one finds things are 1/4" too tall to fit. Cheap pilasters and shelf clips or holes and support pins all easy to do.

    Gracias amigo, un saludo desde Chihuahua, México. Me a gustado tu proyecto, por ser sencillo de construir con herramientas sencillas que todo carpintero tiene en su casa y sobre todo que se pueden quitar y cambiar de lugar. He seguido tu tutorial y ya construí 10 módulos para mi carpintería y con la misma técnica modificar otros de acuerdo a tus necesidades. !Un abrazo desde México!

    Good job. You make this kind of works looks easy to do. I have always the same doubt about shelves stability using that kind of fix, French cleats, it looks can fall in a moment!! In Spain nobody use them. Anyway is a good job, thanks for share!!

      thanks Kimberly! Yes, you absolutely can do it! Just need a drill and the jig... and a saw (or get the person at the lumber store to rip the plywood for you :)

    That system works very well and will hold for decades if you seal the wood before and after you put pices together.
