    What a lovely dam. Surely no terrible fate could ever befall it

      There was nothing wrong with the dam. It was the spillway that failed.

    I grew up north of Oroville and watched the dam grow almost month by month. I remember that when the dam over topped a view point, that a new one was built higher up until the dam was finished and the main overlook was built. I was less then 10 when it was completed.

    Great video. Love them GOODYEAR tires. Gotta have a GOODYEAR tire!!! To bad they couldn't look into the future when The dams spillway failed. Good thing the dam was built dam good, why? Because they used equipment with dam good GOODYEAR tires. Ok, that was the last one.

    This film spoke about California being the most populace state in 1968. I checked online, back then it was a bit over 19 million; in 2022 at over 39 million. A doubling of state population in less than 60 years!

    • @jimurrata6785
      @jimurrata6785 2 роки тому +2

      The world population was 4B in 1974. The planet is set to hit 8 Billion by years end. So, what is that, doubled in 48 years???
      Is there any wonder why we have resource and pollution problems?

      Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
      In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous UA-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.
      Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

    From what I recall from some anecdotal reports from the 1970s, the filling of that reservoir prompted some earthquake activity in the region, as the water seeped down deep to arouse an ancient earthquake fault that was unknown at the time of the planning of the Oroville Dam.
    But nothing of note has been mentioned about regional earthquake activity since.

      @SpruceOaks Рік тому +1

      That was the scuttlebutt at the time, but there never was any scientific or geological basis for this claim. The earthquake was four years after the dam started filling, and the aquifer where the fault was always was there.

      A lot of things have changed in 50 years.
      Including the knowledge base that engineers learn from.
      Equipment and materials available to the contractors.
      Concerns about environmental impact and longevity.
      Hard to imagine five years ago this dam was overflowing.
      You do understand that it was water undermining a joint, and the subsequent scouring that caused the spillway failure?

    And next week boys and girls the governor will announce that California will have all electric cars in its fleet by 2025. 👏👏👏(slow clapping) isn't that great?
    In other news Lake Mead is quickly reaching dead head levels with their turbines due to very low water levels that will prevent the dam from generating power for Las Vegas and parts of California. But they are going all electric anyway. FJB FGN

    And it obliterated a beautiful valley and wrecked the ecology of an entire watershed. By the time Oroville was being designed, we had nuclear power, oceans, and desalination. This monstrosity should have NEVER been built.
    When it comes to irrevocably scarring the land like this, it should be minimal and for flood management only.
