  • Politicians have long had a tendency to frame the past in a way that suits their political agenda in the present and the Holocaust is no different.
In this special episode of The Listening Post, Johanna Hoes reports on historical revisionism in Poland; the governing right-wing Law and Justice party’s attempts to portray all Polish people as heroes or victims while concealing an uncomfortable truth: that some Poles collaborated with the Nazis and were complicit in crimes against Jews.

Ten thousand Polish Jews survived the war in Poland. 250,000 Polish Jews survived by fleeing into Russia. At the end of the war, there were 260,000 Polish Jews. Postwar attacks by Polish Catholics reduced the number of Polish Jews to 30,000. A Polish government antisemitic campaign in 1967 reduced the number of Polish Jews to 3,000.

I used to be a far right ideologist.
    I didn’t hate people.
I hated “them who came to threat us”.
Me and many like me, economically and socially precarious people who worked for a meager black wage, considered “these people” a threat.
They say “in the fog of war..”
I say “in the fog of ignorance, propaganda blinds us all”.
Honestly, this war in Ukraine profoundly changed everything I believe in about politics, history and society.
My advice is that if you’re a victim of an idiot, instead of being outraged, invite them home. They will see where you eat, brush your teeth, sit on the toilet, sleep just like them.
It will make a crack in their concrete eye-blinders.
Words can be hurtful. But sometimes bad manners and insensitivity are not racism.
They are just bad manners and insensitivity. Point that out.

The greatest lie ever created was that Fascism is a creation of the right. I implore you to look at history and learn of the birth of fascism and it's ties to socialism. Mousolini and Karl Marx were bosom buddies... The only difference was Fascists have a twinge of nationalism and less a rift between classes... Just like nationalist Mandela. Your right leaning predilections are ones that value the importance of the rule of law, individual freedom, capitalism. The Nazis were national socialists and under scrutiny resemble Democrats.

Most people who were murdered didn't die in deathcamps or Auschwitz. Ostarbeiter (eastern workers), Fremdarbeiter (foreign workers) and other forced labourers who were forcibly rounded up and brought into work camps from the east. These were separate from the SS-run concentration camps, where prisoners were also forced to perform labour. There were 11,283,000 people the Nazis killed through institutional practices, such as forced "euthanasia" and forced labour. Auschwitz became a symbol as it omitted the 20 million Soviet Slavs murdered through forced labour and murdered through disease and starvation. Through concentrating on Auschwitz the untold horrors of ethno nationalism can be ignored and pigeon holed as " and others". And 3 million non Jewish Poles murdered by Nazis disappear into a memory hole.

Dear Al Jazeera, I think that matching Polish institute of history not responding to your request for interview with Turkye refusal to acknowledge its genocide of Armenians is manipulative at least. Poland has many issues with the past, the current right wing government is using history to build nationalistic narratives - all that is very true. Pointing out all problems with the way Poland and Polish society approaches its sins is always a good thing to do. But making comparisons with a nation that actually committed genocide on another nation is not acceptable.

I have to add a thing about the Uyghurs. After living peacefully among Han Chinese people for decades, during the mid 90's and early 2000's the Uyghurs started aiming for independence from the PRC. They started out peaceful, but got more and more militant over time, up to the point where Uyghur terrorist groups killed hundreds of Han Chinese in attacks. This was the point where the Chinese central government had to intervene. When you look for example at the Chinese province of 'Inner Mongolia' where a majority of ethnic Mongolians live, they can speak Mongolian among eachother, and use the Mongolian script. They are not put into 'reintegration camps', and are not being monitored more then a regular Han Chinese person. This is because they are not aiming to create an independent state (or join Mongolia), and certainly not through means of violence, which some Muslim Uyghurs do and did. The lack of information in documentaries like this are creating turmoil around the world, and are portraying governments the West doesn't like as being autocratic, while this isn't always the case.
