How I SURVIVED Four Different Nazi Concentration Camps | Ben Lesser

  • Ben Lesser was born in Kraków, Poland in 1928. After the German army invaded Poland in 1939, Ben and his family were subject to countless acts of violence by Nazi soldiers and forced to live in the Bochnia Ghetto.
Ben's journey over the next years would be filled with unimaginable pain and suffering. He would survive a seven-week death march and four different concentration camps - Auschwitz-Birkenau, Durnhau, Buchenwald and Dachau.
He would also survive two separate death trains. On the train from Buchenwald to Dachau, Lesser said he spent three weeks in a cattle car with no water, surviving on only crumbs of a bread roll he had smuggled on. Of the 5,000 prisoners on this train, Lesser was one of only 18 who survived and is the last one alive today.
Lesser and one of his older sisters would be the only two of their seven-person family to see liberation.

It's good that some survived to tell the story. But to say Nazis, is not exactly saying it totally truthfully, instead it should be said that it was the German people that did this. It's incredible that one set of people can be so cruel to others. However, with the teaching of forgiveness everyone is given another chance to prove themself a better person. God bless Jews and Germans.

I heard one survivor was in the process of being gassed and she gave birth while the others around her died by gassing. Miraculously they both survived. Instead of killing her right then and there… she managed to survive even more gas showers! And the baby she gave birth to survived the equally fatal infant wards which is conveniently disguised as one, when it’s actually a gassing ward.

My grandfather was one of the G.I.s who helped liberate Dachau at the end of WWII... He survived the horrors of the D-Day landings, fought through france and into the heart of germany itself unscathed. But he would be forever haunted by what he saw in that god forsaken place. He would wake up screaming some nights from the nightmares he'd have. When I was in high school, we took a trip to the holocaust survivors' museum. Before leaving, I stopped in the hall of remembrance and lit two votives at the niche for Dachau- one in memory of my grandfather and the other in memory of the victims. We must never forget what happened in those dark and terrible days.

My grandfather was there too, I can't help but wonder if he was the G.I that fed them that spam. The only time I ever saw my grandfather cry was him retelling the stories of Dachau and how much he regrets accidentally killing a prisoner by trying to fed them some rations. I know that many soldiers did the same, but it's hard not to speculate.
This video had me in tears, but I'm glad we have these 1st hand accounts documented so that we can "hopefully" prevent some atrocities last these reoccurring. Out of curiosity, was your grandfather in the 45th? Mine was in the 42nd infantry, but they landed in Marseilles and not part of d-day so I assumed he wasn't in the same battalion as my grandpa unless transfered.

They just got off on seeing it. It blows my mind that people are living in a fairytale world where this kind of cruelty is 'impossible' to them, they've clearly never had a sociopathic boss before. They do it gradually, so gradually that you can't remember what it was like before, they repeat it over and over, so it feels true...

He knew Mengele from his job working in the kitchens at Auschwitz. How he got that job is a story in itself, but suffice it to say that like Mr. Lesser he was able to think his way into a job that helped him to survive.
I would be surprised if Mr. Lesser's uncle didn't know this man. Maybe even Mr. Lesser did also. The “volunteered” part is debatable though, as he was “invited to volunteer” by the leadership with whom he had disagreements. As a military man, he wouldn’t have dared to say no.

Adding my voice of gratitude to others here. No doubt it takes conviction to continue to re-experience these events. One would need to detach and deliver a scripted speech yet remain present in order to connect human to human why history must never repeat itself. I’m glad I listened to Mr Lesser explain what he endured, in his own words. Such loss, such pain, deprivation, and suffering. Youth and love were always on his side to carry him through the unimaginable. Though he could have chosen to lock these moments away for severe trauma’s sake he rises AGAIN to raise our awareness. Sincerest thanks

God bless you, Sir. I’m so incredibly sorry that you and so many others suffered such hell. May it never happen again. To anyone.
