The players that are representing Great Britain are eligible to do so based on family ties. For example, a lot of the players are from the Bahamas and they're eligible because their parents were born and raisied in the Bahamas when it was a British territory, which makes them eligible to hold a British passport. Other players on the team, like Harry Ford, are American-born with British parents. As for players who are actually from the UK on the team, I think there are a couple (I know one of them is Michael Petersen).
The ultimate goal of a country like Great Britain participating in the WBC is to grow interest in the sport, particularly among the younger generations. Even if they don't win the whole thing, just qualifying for the tournament (let alone win the game against Colombia) does wonders for British baseball in terms of exposure and, most importantly, funding for the program.
Their baseball federation went from a belt tightening ~£25,000 budget to securing at least $600,000 over the next six years thanks to qualifying for this one and winning an automatic qualification for 2026, just to give that last point further context
Trayce Thompson is Klay Thompsons brother. Their Father is from the Bahamas that’s how he can play for GB
The way Mike said "there ya go. Good lad," had me dying laughing. God, I love baseball!
Some great baseball from famous Englishmen like; Chicago Bob, the Louisiana Mauler, Tex Hardeman and Tony from Philly.
Hopefully they can be more authentic in the future, but if the British team gets too badly mauled it might be counterproductive for any British baseball colonies. It seems like the sort of game they'd like as far as cultural stereotypes go.
Hanging an 0-4 outing on Mike Trout is quite the achievement. He is a generational talent.
Hopefully next time around, the British team is staffed with players who have less tenuous ties to the country they're representing - but baseball is a hard set of skills to master and it's probably more important that the team is competitive than authentic. Maybe this exposure might inspire some authentic British interest in baseball and that'd be nice. Baseball seems like the most likely American sport to be successful over there to me, the New England types came up with it after all.
Trayce Thompson is Golden State Warrior Klay Thompson's brother. He was born and raised in Orange County ( Southern California). His dad was from Bahamas and grandfather England. Pitcher born and raised in Sacramento, has England is his family tree.
Great Britain really put up a good fight against the US and they pulled off an upset against Columbia
Columbia!
@@ohslimgoody oops
@@ohslimgoody It's Colombia, not Columbia. Imagine correcting someone and being wrong.
@@ohslimgoody Colombia*
The UK pitcher is from Sacramento, making him literally as British as me.
Looks like I’m British now, everybody.
Plenty of US players play for other countries. You can if your parents are from different countries and things like that.
Most of the Great Britain national baseball team are composed of players from the Bahamas in British Virgin Islands. Everybody else had a direct parent who was from England, or one of the other member nations of the commonwealth of Great Britain.
As a lifelong Seattle Mariners' fan from Seattle. I am excited for the day Harry Ford joins Julio Rodriguez in Seattle, and watching them play together for years. Harry Ford is currently Seattle's #1 Prospect right now.
I love the GB uniforms. They look like the team of bruisers that faced Bugs Bunny.
Hahaha.....they do but really those uniforms are so bland and boring
Holy crap, they do! 😂
the gashouse gorillas from baseball bugs??
Really? 😂 the generic font on the front looks so cheap to me
@@Nathanizbeast That was the budget they had to work with. But they'll be back, and bigger than before, thanks to their performance here! They won't beat Bugs Bunny though. Nobody beats Bugs Bunny!
Y'all should watch all the great britain games! They did better than most everybody expected.
A lot of the really good MLB players are playing for other countries, even if they weren't born there. So it does give the rest of the world a bit more of an advantage than they would've had
Definatly not the USA B team. Great Britian had a great showing. Hopefully this and the MLB games in London help the sport over there grow a little. When you see how little funding Team Great Britian have it makes their showing even mor impressive. I encourage you guys to check out the games in London if you can. Baseball is a much better sport when you see it live.
Bobby Thompson, who hit the legendary "shot heard round the world" was born in Glasgow
Canada used to have the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos but the latter team relocated to Washington DC and became the "Nationals" so there is only 1 Canadian team in MLB as of now
I was just thinking if y’all were going to watch this video. Much love to u guys, y’all make my bad days better
As for the uniform or kit, having mostly light gray trousers and shirts is very common for the visiting team, at bat in the top of the innings, and mostly white trousers and shirts is very common for the home team, at bat in the bottom of the innings. If wearing a color shirt other than gray or white, a dull color for the visiting team and a bright color for the home team.
Note, in this game GB batted in the top of the inning, hence the gray trousers and shirts. When playing as the home team, the GB team was wearing white trousers and bright red shirts.
The final starts in two hours - Japan at US in Miami :) It might be the most watched baseball game in history.
Daz, this was hardly the USA "B" team. The 10 starting USA players have guaranteed contracts that combined total over $1.671 Billion. The same 10 players will be paid a combined total $198.5 million in 2023. The highest paid is Mike Trout, whose guaranteed contract is worth $465 million total/$35.5 million annually. The lowest paid is Kyle Tucker who earns $5 million a year currently.
Most of my St. Louis Cardinals present/past are on this team. I definitely chuckled when Daz said that, but if your not familiar with the players I could see why he would think that.
I thought he meant the Great Britain team was the USA B team
Fyi, Trayce Thompson is the big brother of Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors.
Klay is the older of the two.
6-2 in baseball is probably the equivalent to a 3-1 win in football/soccer
I don't recall all the criteria they use to tell if you can play for a country. I do remember that in 2017, if you could become a citizen of the country, you could play for them. Just based on that, Team Israel assembled a really impressive roster that year because any Jewish guy from anywhere in the world can become an Israeli citizen without too many hurdles.
As for Great Britain, a lot of those fellas have connections through the Commonwealth, but they play professional ball in other countries at all different levels. That'd be the case even if baseball gained a dedicated following in Britain.
Respectable game by the Brits. They have played pretty well in the tournament. They put up a fight.
Mostly as a "demonstration" sport where no medals were awarded, baseball has been intermittently played at the Olympics, beginning in 1904 in St. Louis. Since then, it has been dropped 7 times and brought back 6 times. The primary reason is a lack of facilities and interest in some host countries. Baseball was first competed in 1992 in Barcelona, and then both baseball (men) and softball (women) were competed in 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sydney), 2004 (Athens), and 2008 (Beijing). They were not at the 2012 Olympics (London) and 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). They were in 2020/2021 (Tokyo) but will not in 2024 (Paris). When the IOC voted in 2005 to not have baseball and softball in 2012 in London, there was unsubstantiated speculation that another reason these American sports were dropped was to show disapproval for the American-led invasion of Iraq two years earlier.
Mike asked, "How long is a baseball game?" Very often, the answer is now "too damn long." One of the reasons is either the pitcher or the batter taking too much time between pitches, often for no apparent reason. Currently, MLB is using a "pitch clock" in spring training (preseason) games as an experiment. This works somewhat like a shot clock in basketball. I haven't watched baseball in years, but I've heard that it is shortening the length of games. A pitch clock would have a more significant effect in the especially long playoff games.
The home run for Great Britain was hit by the American-born Trayce Thompson, son of the Bahamian-born basketball player Mychal Thompson. The pitcher Vance Worley is the son of a woman born in Hong Kong. Among the British coaches are 4 from the U.S., 1 from The Bahamas, 1 from Ireland, and, yes, 2 from the UK. The manager (head coach) shown at 8:48 is Drew Spencer, one of the Americans. The Team GB player who hit a triple, D'Shawn Knowles, was born in The Bahamas.
Thompson represented Great Britain in the 2023 World Baseball Classic; he is eligible as his father Mychal is from the Bahamas
i was at this game, was walking up the stairs after getting a beer in the 1st inning and the crowd went silent. turned around and britain was leading already
Most of the GB players were Jamaican and from other countries
Look at the roster there are zero Jamaican players
Whether baseball is part of the Olympics has become highly dependent on where the Olympics are hosted, mostly due to availability of existing facilities. It was part of the last Olympics because they were hosted in Japan. It won't be in the 2024 Olympics in France but it will return in 2028 when the games are hosted in Los Angeles.
Trayce Thompson is Klay Thompson’s little brother by the way. Really athletic family.
Most of the British guys from the team is from the Bahamas
LOL watching the blokes gives me so much serotonin 😁
Fun fact trayce is Klay Thompsons brother, they are from the Bahamas originally I think that’s how he was eligible to play for Great Britain
Dad is from Bahamas, they were raised in southern california.
It's already been said, but on the world stage their uniform said Great Britain without saying their Great Britain.
I'm American but not a baseball fan, so I wouldn't be upset if GB won
Trayce Thompson’s dad is from the Bahamas that’s why he can play for Great Britain, Also his brother is Klay Thompson from the Warriors
Toronto Blue Jays are the only team in Canada in MLB and in the NHL their is 7 teams and they are the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Montreal Canadiens. and in the NBA is Toronto Raptors that's about it for professional sports teams
Honestly, y'all didn't do bad considering how stacked Team USA is.
And you definitely wins first prize for worst uniforms of all time. 😂
The shirt designs looked like a filled-out blank on a form . [Team name here]. They reminded me of the generic stuff they used to sell in grocery stores back in the day, a can of peas with a white label that just said PEAS.
USA let off the gas early
The British did very well this year. Don't sell them short.
Fun fact Trayce Thompson is the brother of Klay Thompson the player on the golden state warriors in the nba
I think about 25% of the roster for Great Britain is from Britain. Which actually was a decent number, about 6 players.
Mexico vs Puerto Rico game was amazing
Trayce Thompson is Klay Thompson's (Golden State Warriors) brother just fyi!
College Basketball buzzer beaters that get increasingly more clutch - next?
Definitely not the "B" team for Team USA. Pretty much all of those players are the best Americans at those positions (and are elite players in MLB). A 6-2 result isn't very close, but Great Britain played okay. Against a team of elite MLB players, 6-2 is a respectable showing and if not for a few errors, it probably would have been a run or two closer.
Most Great Britain players are Americans that were born in Great Britain or have a British parent/grandparent. Or they are from British Commonwealth countries like the Bahamas.
Most of the team is either American (with a british parent) or from the Bahamas.
Do the Britain/Columbia game too
on the GB team: 6 are from GB, 6 from bahamas.....rest of the team born in US lol.
What's with the thumbnail? I almost skipped past the video, didn't know it was you guys!
Probably time constraints. A busy day for Dave and cut out some editing work possibly.
I feel the same as y’all do about baseball when I watch soccer… I’m happy with a tie with England and I typically expect them to embarrass us 🤷♀️.
Thank you Daz for defending my country 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴 and being angry because they spelled my country’s name wrong
Absolutely not the USA B team. Mike Trout, Mookie Betts and Nolan Arenado are among the top 10 best players in the MLB. Great Britain did pretty well in this game. The USA/Canada game was ended in the 7th with the mercy rule, because the USA was ahead by more than 10.
Wow great timing it’s my lunch break now
trayce thompson is klay thompsons brother lol
Their father is from the Bahamas which is how he qualified.
Fun fact: Trayce Thompson is the brother of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Harry Ford. His parents were killed by Voldemort.
Wait, GB has a baseball team? I would have lost all my money betting they didn't.
Blokes: Typical MLB scores are in the single digits such as 5-2, 3-0 etc, most teams average 4 runs per game over the 162 game season so you will have your share of 8 or 10 run games to go with the 0s and 1s. Absolute blowouts might be 15-2 or so, a few games per season you will see a team score 20 runs when one team's pitching is doing horribly and the other team happens to have 6 or 7 of their 9 players all have an outstanding performance on the same day
Trayce Thompson is klay Thompson brother 😂
6 born in Great Britain, 8 from Bahamas. The rest are USA and Canada with British family ties.
Trayce thompson is klay thompsons brother by the way
You should definitely watch the great Britain games against Colombia and Mexico as well. I would highly recommend skipping the game against Canada, though, you guys were thoroughly embarrassed against Canada.
Trayce Thompson is African American born to NBA legend and 2x champion Michael Thompson who was born in the Bahamas which is a British colony
Like father like son, both Thompsons played in LA, and Trayce is youngest brother to Klay Thompson
What’s up fellas!
6-2 isnt a battering but it is a definitive lose
Wait why is Klay Thomason’s little brother playing for Great Britain
RAHH 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🇺🇸 WTF IS A KILOMETER 🦅🦅🦅
that was a good showing by GB 6-2 isn't a blowout at all decent game
Yes it is, they stopped trying
No B team at all. UK did great! Congratulations boys
The guy that sounds like a he's doing a bad 30's radio broadcast parody keeps taking me out of it. He sounds like he could be from the north east. Maybe the midwest. I cant quite place it. Maybe a dodgers commentator or something?
The problem is that baseball is too random you cant play just one game because anything can happen even the best team can be beaten by the worst team ,they should play at least a few games to get a more realistic outcome.
Trayce is of French origin and is a girl's name
U guys should pay more attention to this years MLB season watch highlights for some games
This usa team is the best theyve ever put out, every position was pretty much the best american there is, and yes 6-2 is a bad loss but for the talent difference its actually not that bad
I haven't payed much attention but it seems Japan may have the best team
USA def didn't scrape the barrel for talent Daz the players on the team are the best of the available and eligible. Far from a b team lol
You guys should watch some of japans games.
Terrible game. Watch the quarterfinal between the US and Venezuela. Best game of the wbc so far
Colleges dont feed the majors like the minor leagues.
These are Americans lol. At least a decent amount are.
Bloke seepage
Kinda ruins the fun when Americans and Japanese play on the British team. It should be Dudes vs. Blokes.
We Brits would of won this if it was called Rounders and not baseball
I'm an American rooting for Great Britain. They actually just beat Colombia. We will wait for that reaction. Also, 6-2 is a respectable score in baseball. To clarify, I'm rooting for Great Britain in addition to the U.S. Hope they finish 1 and 2, U.S. / Great Britain.
💀
Pretty lame to root against your own country. Let alone advertise it like it’s a good looking trait.
Why? That's a weird stance. Most of the players on Great Britain aren't even from there.
As a Brit, I don't understand why you be rooting for Great Britain when your from the USA?
@S.J.L.87 It's called rooting for the underdog. I'd rather see GBR do well instead of the favorites like Japan and DR. I am not rooting against the U.S., like I mentioned, I hope they both do well.
