What you said about "feeling it, when you get a Polycrhomos" is so true. When i started with Coloured Pencils, i bought a cheaper set to see if i like them. I couldn't replicate what i saw online. I bought a 12 Set of Polycrhomos and it was a game changer. Never looked back (i am however super lighthandedand i love to layer, which works great with the Polychromos). For me the saying "buy cheap, buy twice" was more than true. I slowly bought other Polychromos open stock (as a german i have a very easy time getting these open stock) and after a year, i got the full set. The limited Colour Palette in the beginning was also really good to learn how i can mix colours myself. I saw a Video back then, where someone layered 12 Polychromos and got like 140 Colours out of them. So you don't need many Pencils to get amazing colours out of a limited set.
Imvery happy you got something out of this video! And you did things the right way...you used a set before Polychromos....so YOU really got to appreciate the jump in quality. Thanks for the comment and for watching my video!
Agree. 100% I had a 36set of Polys at the beginning, and still tried “cheaper” sets. (Arrtx, Castle Arts etc) Stupid, I know.😂 I don't find them cheap at all. A full set costs around 60 €. Especially if you only want to own 1-3 sets, these sets are not worth it at all, as you can't buy the pencils individually. I would recommend everyone to get better quality pencils individually for the price of such a set. After I realized how big the difference in quality is (didnt take long 😂), and that I personally get along best with the Polys, I gave all my “cheaper” sets away. First I added colors to my Poly set, and made sure I had a light and dark shade of each color, then completed the set within a few months. I could have bought a set of Pablos, Lightfast etc for the money I spent on these "cheaper" sets. I've only been using Polys and Pablos for a while now, and rebuy the ones I use up. (Definitely cheaper in the long run. This is also something that some people don’t concider) You can't compare the quality of traditional brands like FC, Caran Dache etc. with these sets. Trabant vs Lamborghini 🤷
@@Melinda.H Haha, yes!! I too use Polys and Pablos and their watercolour counterparts. All the sets i'll ever need. And yes, replacing pencils is much cheaper this way.

Great video and explanation. I saw these and passed on them. I knew these aren't polychromos. Watching other comparisons it seemed to me it was the ease of following colour alongs that was the selling point. Having the same number took out a lot of the fiddly colour matching. As you said matching the black widows was a bit time consuming.
You definitely are NOT wrong there. I guess it's because when I do a color along, I actually try not to lock down specific colors (right down to the number of the pencil). I feel it just isolates too many people from having a good time coloring along with me if they dont have the exact set I do. Every set of pencils has a light yellow, but only one set might have a Lemon Yellow 106. I just (personally) feel like you can achieve what I am doing with any colors that are close to what I am using. Im not sure if that came out right....it sounds good in my head haha I appreciate your comment and thoughts on this Ghost Girl 😇
I like your brand comparison videos. As someone who drives a Jeep, I don't 'miss' the experience of driving a Rolls-Royce, and I still like the Jeep and I still love my Prismacolors (since they're the only 'good' brand of pencils I've owned.) I do feel the quality of Prisma is not what it was 25/30 years ago, but they are the better brand I can buy open-stock locally, they are affordable, and they perform reliably for me. Someday I'll splurge and buy a full set of best-brand pencils but for now I'm happy with what I have.
It sounds like you should be very happy with what you have now. If you have a set of Prismacolors (even the newer Premier ones) you indeed have a good set. And truer words, there are not, when you say they are not what they used to be. You must have been coloring for a while to be able to appreciate Berol Prismacolors! you might have just named the one set of pencils I don't have! haha I just have Gold. I see what you're trying to do...you're trying to knock me off my podium!!! Thanks a lot Penny!!! GOSH!!!! 😆
@@Tasha_75 I love the Stat Joy Gold. I keep mine in the order that they are meant to be in, and I can get good results on pretty much any paper in any book.
My brother in Christ these are for poor ppl who want to do color alongs not because they feel the same as pc. We know we're not gonna get pc quality in a Chinese budget set.
But then why not just get an actual cheap set to color along? In the grand scheme of things, these are still not a cheap pencil. Yes they are cheaper than Polychromos but still a bit more pricey than a lot of other sets. Unless you are saying, that because people are so dependent on the number system to color along. Because THAT I do somewhat get. But if anyone has colored before, they know a light yellow in one set will substitute for a light yellow in another set. Whether the number is 103 or 04...light yellow is light yellow and will do the trick. This is why I dont tell people the number of the pencil I am using but rather the actual color. I don't want anyone to feel like they are pinned down to having to get the exact same set of pencils I am using in order to do what I am doing....because they absolutely do NOT need the same set.
@@KessaWitdaFro I like mine as well (unfortunately for me...they were closer to $60). But let's call them what they are...a cheap pencil pretending to be something they aren't. This video is just highlighting that point.
@@KessaWitdaFro That's definitely a great deal!!! I wish I was so lucky. I paid almost double that. And I can comfortably say they are worth $30....even a little more. Like I said in the video, they are a good fun pencil to use with a great color palette. But I cannot be convinced that the company said, Let's create a set of pencils that look like polychromes so a handful of people can do a color along haha. No, After speaking with them, it is clear that they are trying to replicate pencils for people to purchase in place of Polychromos. BUT no matter our opinions, I am very glad you watched my video and commented. I appreciate you Kessa! 😇
I feel too many in the coloring world are not saying it clearly. Poly Chromos are lightfast tested. This may mean NOTHING in the coloring world full of people who work on non archival paper books all the time. It means EVERYTHING to an artist making a living selling work that should last past their life time. The dupe set is fine if you are just starting out and need to see if its a hobby you will stay with, but it is not lightfast tested. We have no idea what pigments or binders were used or how long they will last. They may look like Poly Chromos but they its like plastic molded into food, looks the same but no way am I going to eat it.
In all honesty...I don't believe 90% of brands that have lightfast stars on them. It's easy to put a couple of lightfast stars to look good and then move on. Im in that skeptical percentage of people/professionals that question a lot of the lightfast topic. And you are definitely corect....when it comes to these pencils they are just fine...but Polychromos, they are NOT! Thanks for watching my video AND for the comment. I appreciate ya! ☺
nope i dot respect Prismacolor you cannot stay on the top if quality went DOWN ...thier quality went WAY down when i was 10 years old it was HIGH quality but they always had problem with their lead breaking and now that they change manufacturer IT WORST the wood crack too now .For the price just skip prisma and get fabel ,derwent or cara .yeah prisma is smooth but they break so often, and you need to sharpen your crayon all the time and their lead is NOT center!!! prisma is a waste of money rip prisma color .
You definitely sound like you were around when Prisma was king! I remember the first time I used one. I was in class and the teach put a shoebox full of Berol Prismacolors on the table. I have NEVER felt ANYTHING like it before. That was one of the turning points in my life when I knew how much I enjoyed using color pencils. So trust me... I get it! Now the wood is a bit warped, the paint on them is thin, the leads are brittle, and the colors don't always seem consistent. So let me specify what I meant was the NAME Prismacolor has earned its home among top pencils. You and I were around to see the downfall of their quality so WE know what they were and what they've become. But we have to remember, for someone who has never used them back in the day...they don't have a comparison. So they still are a glorious pencil. We just need to keep that in mind. But from you to me....you are not wrong AT ALL!
I am not denying your findings BUT let's not forget FC Polychromos put a lot of their money into building a reputation of the best pencils out there due to marketing as well... It is in every profession where a company tries to make themselves look worthy of a price tag attached to their products - let it be clothing, make up, anything and art is not different.
True, but that reputation can't be built with bad products.... So pointing towards the reputation they've built with marketing as the major reason people say these are good doesn't make sense.
You are not wrong. Thats sort of what I am saying. Faber Castel didnt just throw a set of pencils into the world without research, time and a LOT of money. They put all that marketing into a product they really believe in....and the proof is in the pudding. Dupes did none of this....its just a matter of riding the coattails of someone who already did. Now if I could just find the right clothing to do the same for me...... haha
@@DieterPrivate I think a great example of this is Prismacolors. I honestly feel like they are riding off of the reputation from the 90s. They were the absolute top dog in the color pencil world and now I feel like they are just going through the motions to get out a product. And you are absolutely right...If someone makes a bad pencil, all the marketing in the world won't make it any better.
Polychromos got their reputation for being in the market for over 100 years and being consistently excellent. The Polychromos launched in 1908. They build their reputation over the 100 years they are on the market.

Oh they are a really good pencil! I completly agree....the sad part is, if these were called "Universal Space Colors!" and came in a completely different box....I WOULD LOVE THEM! Its just so easy to get distracted with the ruse of packaging. But you are indeeed right...they are a joy to use!
Also, if you do get Star Joy, you will have to let me know what you think!!! 😍
Another deep dive informative video!
Always love seeing your comments Sally. Thank you so much for the support!
The beat up car. 😂
Would you say these dupes are the Minilla to the Polychromos? 😉
Minilla....Just because he has scales doesnt make him Godzilla!!!!!
@@sugahsweetart 🤣 Exactly! Just like a green box does not a Polychromos make.
Awesome Video
Thank you Jamie!!!!! Always happy to see your comments!
Have you thought about doing a comparison video of the original Star Joy and the Star Joy Gold pencils? I would love to see it and get your opinion on the difference between them.
you might have just named the one set of pencils I don't have! haha I just have Gold. I see what you're trying to do...you're trying to knock me off my podium!!! Thanks a lot Penny!!! GOSH!!!! 😆
I'm not a fan of the SJ Gold at all. I love the Deli Star Joy.
@@Tasha_75 You are gonna have me on the hunt now to do a little digging....thanks for the extra work Tasha!!! 🤣
@@sugahsweetart lol. The Gold are worse than the ones you just reviewed.
My set only cost around $30 and I love them for what they are 😂
@@KessaWitdaFro I like mine as well (unfortunately for me...they were closer to $60).
@@sugahsweetart You know I gotta comment for the algorithm :) . Love the channel
