  • I purchased the Shaper Trace through kick starter and received it recently.
Here's my unboxing and my initial impressions of whether or not the shaper trace is a good addition to the broader shaper Origin world and whether or not you might want to pony up the $99 to get your own.
    Not sponsored, of course.

Aluminum seems like a reasonable request for durability alone. Looks cool though, especially the second signature.

I'm really interested in the fine detail work with it--and how it can work with some sketching. More tests to come.

Just got mine today, but haven't tried it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it does turning drawings into SVGs to cut. As for the Origin being a "vanity" tool, maybe, but it definitely allows me to do things I never would even try without it. Inlays, for example, are something I would never try without the Origin. I'm a software engineer (retired), so I'm totally comfortable using a tool like the Origin that is computer-based, but I'm a noob when it comes to woodworking. I've been able to make some pretty cool stuff with the Origin that I really don't have the skills (or patience) to do with traditional hand tools or even handheld power tools. A project I think I will try soon is to dry some maple leaves that have fallen off trees in my yard, copper plate them, then use the Shaper Trace to create an SVG, then inlay the copper plated leaves into like a charcuterie board or something. I think the Trace might be really useful for things like that. It should be fun to experiment with, anyway.

Woah--that copper inlay project sounds amazing. I hope you'll share the pictures when it ends.

You can simply use your CNC and mill out some 2 mm aluminum and then affix it to the frame on the back. I don't think the depth of field is going to make much difference in that aspect but it would give it some rigidity.

I have just got mine too, didn't realise I would need to also to pay a subscription service to get the most out of it, given the price for the plastic frame it should have been a lot cheaper or include the app upgrades in the price

Yeah they've been pretty sneaky in that respect, which is unfortunate, as I talk about in some other videos. They're really going for the pay-to-play model, which doesn't seem like the best plan to ingratiate themselves to the woodworking community.

New to the channel. The trace frame is an interesting idea. I'd personally rather have a local app. I don't like to be forced online for everything. If their website is down for maintenance, then I can't do my work which I don't like.
This also is a bit of real world usage of the router I was looking at. It seems like a handheld cnc but with no real accuracy other than your ability to color within the lines. I thought it may be good for things I can't fit on my CNC, but not nearly as accurate

Thanks for watching. I've liked the trace for creating SVGs out of anything--but I feel like there are other apps that can achieve the same function without the frame or having to pay Shaper for that tech. As for the flexibility, I'm a big fan and I don't need to have a dedicated space in my small shop for a 4x4 CNC.

@@falknermakesTotally agree if you don't have the space for a dedicated CNC, the Shaper could be a good option

What camera stand are you using, that range of height looks super useful!

It's just a generic tripod from Amazon. It has three levels plus a head that can reach up, which helps with those overhead shots.

I haven't received my Trace yet. Have you taken a picture and played with the design in Studio?

Not yet. I really only had the time for unboxing it so far. I'm hoping to get after it a little more in depth this weekend though.

Nice vid and review. Got mine but haven't even opened it up yet. One suggestion for something like that throwing star: What if you traced it tight to the star, then offset the finish cut out 50 thou or so on Origin for clearance. Then the cutout would be based on the clean, straight lines of the star. I know you were just doing a quick demo, tho, so nice job!

I'm going to try out that technique this weekend. Thank you! I'm hoping to see how it might work for unique kitchen accessories.

@@falknermakesthe star is so flat I wonder if you could just take the pic of the star and not trace it?

Im dissapointed so far, they really need to work on the UI of the app. Need to incorporate some AI to fix slight tracing errors, or straighten lines that should be straight, like your star example. I thought they were going to have some advanced tech that would do that when i ordered. The erasing of erroneous spots is annoying, overall bad UI.. the "app" is what we paid for, but does little more than free adobe capture.. also wouldnt be suprised if app features come that are paid upgrades.. they say the app is always free and youll have access but doesnt rule out extra featurea that are not there today will be free.. if trying to trace a shape like a 123 block, if you have a little extra on the corner, or a slight wiggle in the line, now you no longer have a perfect shape, so not for precise work. Sure a hand written signature works but you could have done that with adobe capture, as true size doesnt matter. The whole point is to have a perfect sized svg, but lines end up sloppy unless perfectly drawn, and at that point im using CAD.

Thanks for this. I'm really interested to give it more practice and see what it's like for a more robust review--it doesn't sound promising though from your report. Bummer.
