Something people fail to recognize is these guys were pulling off live versions of their songs almost flawlessly in the '80s!
    Incredible talent.

Five "lost and rare" 80s post punk gems:
    1. Chameleons
    2. Sad lovers and Giants
    3. Comsat Angels
    4. Wild Swans
    5. The Sound

An old boyfriend made me a homemade cassette of Land in 1984. I didn't know who they were but just loved it. I played it so much I wore it out. I eventually got an album (beautiful vinyl) from Germany about 5 years ago. So thank you to Peter Van Sonsbeek for getting me into this band, I love them!!!

OMG how I love the band. How I love the music. Beams me right back to the 80‘s. Very little video material is available from or about them. I remember, in Berlin back in the day those 2 songs „Independence day“ and „You move me“ were played on the radio. „You move me“ was my absolute favorite for quite a while and I had a recording on compact cassette. Thank you for posting it...

I've tried for decades to figure out why this band - that I love - never had the success they deserved back then. The nearest I come is that sounded so much like ALL the best bits of every good Band (part Cure/Banshees, Part U2, Part Simple Minds etc) that they were just dismissed as copyists instead of the pioneers they were. Because they were better than all of them except maybe The Cure, mid-period U2 in their pomp perhaps. Anyway I'm glad to see new gems like this. Thanks.

    •  9 місяців тому +1

i think a great part of why they never made it big is that they pretty much lost their way during and after Fiction. Fiction, admitted by Stephen himself, was a bit lackluster, albeit still in the great direction set by their previous two albums. until then, the angels were a brooding, moody but sometimes energetic and fun band. they wanted to break into the mainstream, though, and this proved their ultimate downfall.
i don't know what happened with "it's history" which was not released on fiction -- it should have been, as it had all the signs of a possible hit, and with some better marketing, it should have been one. instead, they let their once-opening-act, u2, copy the whole of that sound and make "new year's day" a year later.
Land, on the other hand, apart from the great rework of Independence Day, is a trainwreck. it's not a _bad_ album per se, but it's not an honest one, and that stung the harshest, as one of the best qualities of the angels' previous records were their honesty and identity. it tries too much to be an adult pop record, and it succeeds, but it's a prominently boring one. and a boring album is a cardinal sin in pop.
maybe you all had that friend who used to be a great friend, even if slightly depressed and moody... but you always loved to hang with them as their honesty and heart-on-their-sleeve attitude just resonated with your humanity. and then at one point, somebody told them that these qualities, this attitude, is not right. so a kind of mock cheerfulness, a mock seriousness was added to their character, and as much as you wanted to keep loving them, these synthetic, feigned good spirits were just too much of a departure for you... so you kind of broke off.
Land feels like that. it lacks the bite, the moodiness and the grit that was present on the previous three. add to it that Stephen was never an immensely charismatic frontman like Bono, Robert Smith or Jaz Coleman, but their songs, their open nature on the first three records kind of did his work for him. this was lost with the change in sound and attitude.
pretty sad, if you ask me. it's great that they sort of found themselves again with My Mind's Eye, but by that time they became followers, not inventors, and it was just a matter of time for them to fold eventually.

+tezzo55 -- *_"In my opinion they are one of the best bands of all time....True quality is timeless"_* Even though I discovered them late in the game (1995 or 1996) I am fully in agreement. I was lucky in that some great soul went the extra mile and made one or two compilation tapes for me after I put up a post on one of the 'Indie/Alternative Rock' forums via USENET (anyone remember that?) asking for further info. on TCA. I had just gotten a job at the library of my alma mater, and came across a _Trouser Press_ music guide in the reference section. After reading some comparison the author made to Joy Division and TCA's first three albums in addition to shaking my head almost in disbelief how this particular band most probably never came to my attention and that of my 'New Wave' peers in high school, my curiosity was peeked and the rest is history as the old saying goes. :)
*EDIT:* Not that it really matters or is of utter importance, but I thought I'd re-edit my post and say the following. I still have that tape (or tapes) after all these years in addition to getting the first three albums on CD during the second remastering phase. To each his own but putting aside that I don't like or care much for digi-paks and other fancy compact disc packaging and much prefer good old jewel cases from the 80's, the remastering was on the money in regards to the sound output levels. Too bad the same can't be said for any number of other remastered albums which became victims of the so-called Loudness Wars. I just happen to be listening yesterday to a number of tracks from The Smiths (first CD pressings from the 80's which I'm quite satisfied with despite using the VLC media player's built-in compressor to punch up the sound for added depth) after not having heard them in quite sometime, and will do the same later on with TCA.
