The accident of falling into 'blue collar' songscribing - and past punker pounding - well no-one ever captured it better than this few minutes, least of all this band. And that's not to detract from their other music. Many many tried to walk this blade dance between the commercial and the cauldron in past-punk music, from 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' to 'Song From Under The Floorboards', but no-one ever managed the cross-ply quite like The Comsat's 'Independence Day'. I guess that's why it's their most renowned moment.

Seminal. I sometimes played this live with just bass guitar and vocals (a little keyboards occasionally). The guitarist/vocalist wasn't happy when I did it! I caught him off guard in the Fleece Bristol when he was buying a pint at the bar...the crowd knew it and cheered it! A very good memory!

The real serious problem with this song is simply that -----you end up turning the volume up higher and higher and if you are living in the attic like some of us have to do then as that bass come blasting through the fucking slates start to loosen and then slide off the roof - who gives a shit, but the people down below now know and keep well away as soon as they hear those harmonics being slashed out of Fellows' guitar -0 they don't want to join the dead!

Decent song, quite emotionally astute. I think John remarked that the Comsat Angels were on the same bill, or supporting act in the early years with U2. Judge for yourself if they were as good as War or the Achtung Baby.
I was there too. Saw The Comsat Angels support U2 at The Locarno in Hurst St Birmingham in what is now Chinatown. I was into both bands at the time. To be fair I thought both bands were brilliant that night. U2 were modest and unassuming because the world hadn't woken up to them yet - the yes men and the accountants and the private jets, being treated like God etc etc was just around the corner, and when it arrived, for me, U2 lost their innocence and hence their initial appeal. I will always always be thankful to them for Boy though. Such a breath of sweet liberating fresh air at the time. On the other hand, The Comsat Angels were also brilliant that night. Signed to Polydor, all augured well. But it just didn't happen for them. Looking back now, of the two bands, it is The Comsat Angels that still hold be entranced. Their music was more introspective and yet majestically dynamic within that environment. They could be so other worldly - tracks like Sleep No More typifies that, and all based round two bass notes yet it captivates you, and you find yourself not wanting to breathe until its over. Or they could crank it up and blow everyone away with songs like Goat of The West. I could talk all night. Bono said their music had a terrible beauty. He always did have a way with words, in this case words of truth.

cara o Régis Tadeu tinha um programa de rádio onde recebia várias cartas sobre músicas. Depois ele trabalhou em uma revista e recebia milhares de cartas e críticas de discos. Por exemplo, pra quem não sabe o produtor do Black sabbat esteve no Brasil no final de 68 e início de 69, a Vanusa lançou um Disco em 69 com um havy metal em inglês, um puta som, nesses depois o Black sabbat estoura no mundo com uma música idêntica. E a Vanusa não fez nada.
O riff inicial lembra Soldados e a bateria seca, o timbre, mas só, o riff marcante de Teclado de Soldados e o andamento posterior da música não. Guardadas as devidas proporções o Regis Tadeu que é um cara inteligente, porém, seu ímpeto sensacionalista faminta por polêmicas acabou exagerando por aqui, pelo menos na minha visão.
Da pra ver claramente a inspiração, mas nao é cópia e nem plagio. Harmonia diferente, é igual dizer que alguma banda de metal copiou o sepultura por usar palm muting num riff em mi menor.

I saw the Comsats on that tour and they quite simply blew U2 off stage.
