Possibly the finest Peel Session around (audio wise) from the most under-rated post punk band ever (well, apart from The Sound). These versions are so much better than what was put down on record. And they actually had their highest chart placing here in New Zealand with "Sleep No More" back in 1981,we loved the post punk sound, what with Joy Division hitting no.1 with "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere" respectively.
I never realized how much in common they had with The Sound before - I keep expecting "New Way of Life" to come up. Both great bands. I think The Sound’s records always had this raw intensity and the CS Angels records had too many industry hands on them. I have always respected them, but this recording is a revelation.
This is one of the best sounding Peel sessions ever. Maybe even my favorite in terms of its sonic qualities. So well recorded and mixed. I actually prefer these versions to the album versions.

Echo and the Bunnymen, The Sound and Comsat Angels, great bands of 1980/81 with a particular fushion of post punk psychedelic rock. Love the Peel sessions. This is fantastic.
finally understanding the greatness of the Sound and Comsats in 2020.....how did I miss these fantastic groups in their prime when I was all about Sisters, Violets, Lorries, Bauhaus, Chams, Furs, etc in the early 80s...
The Comsat Angels was the first band that really got me interested in music. I was 16 in 1980 and full of teenager 'angst and anger'. The music of CSA was a way for me to cope with all the mixed feelings I had at that time. I've been seeing them live a several times at De Koog, Noord-Scharwoude (in all places!) and Paradiso in Amsterdam. Their live gigs were awsome. Great memories!
I can’t believe how incredible these songs are and yet how these guys aren’t more well known. Completely inspiring and moving, I feel grateful to the efforts of Comsat Angels and their musical documents.
What a great live version of "Dark Parade". I never had the chance to see them, living in California all we got to hear were their records (Expensive imports). So we passed them around, and then taped them (Cassette's). Thanks Vic!
GOD SAVE JOHN PEEL in young years i have heard RADIO BFBS He have played music that never now heard I was grown up with JOHN PEEL THANK YOU IN HEAVEN !!!!!!!
@@plushy9849 Hi Plushy. I think Independence Day is a prime example. There is no bass whatsoever for the first couple of verses and then it hits you like a tsunami, whereas if it had been there from the beginning its impact wouldn't have had such bad profound effect on the listener.
The production of these recordings are incredible for a “load up, play your songs, mix a bit and fuck off” in a few hours situation. Those drums sound massive!
@@tripzville7569 I did a couple of Peel sessions back in the late 90’s and the sound team were really fun guys to work with. They were all old enough to be the same guys but I’m sure the BBC had a load of these seasoned sound techs. 😂
Be Brave... my favourite Comsats track. saw them live several times in the early 1980s, perhaps most notable in Brighton 1980 on the same bill with a band we thought had a stupid name which was U2. that bloody Bono , when he threw himself into the audience , his right elbow went into my mouth
Saw them on the same tour at 'The Kings Hall Stoke' fer a quid' ..What a band .. U2 were shocking, more posing than Julian Cope could ever manage !! Then the Comsats were were banned from America, as Comsat was the trade name of a US rocket project !

I played in many bands that never had any major success, but I was invited by Jaz to audition for Killing Joke when the huge presence that was Paul Raven went to America and Canada to play for the awesome bands that were Ministry , and Prong, and others. Jaz liked my unusual politics plus I can read music because I studied classical guitar to Grade 8, which he liked too. But I'm no bass player really , and I found Geordie rather intimidating...but I was kinda surprised by the invitation.
I actually went to see them at Loughborough Uni around 1979/80 time supporting U2 in a hall that couldn't have fit more than 500 people in it! They just blew me away. Wonderful band
Having a bit of Comsats revisit - so this is tremendous to hear. Remember it from the time. Kind of suffered from "it's like Joy Division" easy dismissal. Of course, sounds bugger all like Joy Division.
Omg!! Everything sounds so perfect, just like an album recording, incredible, what an underrated band

@@garethde-witt6433ummmm,post punk - it was actually a genre that developed out of the punk scene, hence the term post punk.
This version of "be brave" is off the charts

Not a claim I'd make lightly but this and the last Ruts session (1980) may be the greatest sessions Peel ever broadcast. What a way to enter 1981!
What a great live version of "Dark Parade". I never had the chance to see them, living in California all we got to hear were their records (Expensive imports). So we passed them around, and then taped them (Cassette's). Thanks Vic!

Me too listened to JP's music on BFBS. For us in West-Germany J Peel was our musical guru 😎
he saved my life as a teenager x
I was addicted to John Peels Music! Once I missed one Broadcast, I was nearly to cry.
Yes so many great bands got their first break thanks to Mr Peel. And the sessions always very well produced.
Be Brave is changed my life, thanks!
The kings of sparsity. The Comsat Angels were proof that sometimes it's not what you put in a song as what you leave out that makes it work.
Yes! This is precisely my feeling too.

The Comsat Angels one of my favourite bands.
U2, a poor man's Comsat Angels - just love them
I saw Comsat Angels in 1981 supporting U2, half the audience left after Comsat finished their set before U2 came on. Says it all really.
The Comsats blew U2 off stage on the 1981 tour. They are not a poor man's anything.
