The sponge for cuttings is so clever! If you just cut a slit in the side of it when you get them out you could always reuse it too.
I went to the thrift store the other day and got 15 pots including two self-watering ones and some support sticks for less than 15 euros! Definitely worth checking out a local one, can save you a ton of money and sometimes you can find some really good stuff too. Lamps to put grow bulbs in is an other thing worth looking for. And of course, if you get fed up with the pots or other things you have and they're still in good shape you can always take them back and someone else might find them useful 💛

I got a tip about the sponge technique: You don't have to poke holes in it, but tu make some cuts through it. YOu can push the stems through the cuts. Tey will stay in place with ease. The advantages are: You will not hurt the fine roots, while trying to take the plant out of the sponge. Also you can resuse the sponge for several times with ease.

My coffea Arabica plant is in a grow pot inside of a large coffee mug! It was definitely fitting! I use champagne flutes that had never been used for water props, the narrow top prevents them from sliding in and rotting and they're skinny enough they can fit right in under the lights next to the mother plant!

I find a lot of cheap and pretty pots and planters at my local thrift shop and yard sales and I have saved a lot of nursery pots from perennials and shrubs that I planted over the years. I have all sizes and they fit inside each other and don't take up too much space in my garden shed.
There's also a local dollar store in my village where I can get all sizes of containers to put under my pots to catch water...and I saved all of my Chinese take-out containers from where I used to live before I moved. Not only do they make nice 'greenhouses' to start seeds or for rooting cuttings, they also come in handy in the kitchen for storing leftovers. 🤣

I bought a set of carbide drill bits (diamond bits work too) so I can add drainage holes to anything I want to use as a planter; it wasn't too expensive (less than $20 CAD, assuming you already have a drill) and can drill through ceramic, stoneware, et c. For earthenware/terra cotta, I use masonry drill bits.
Just be careful and take your time while drilling - don't apply pressure and let the drill bit do the work to prevent cracking, and pour water over the bit and planter throughout the process to prevent overheating. And wear eye protection.

I like using Turkish tea glasses as repurpose pots, and I often use thrifted wine bottle stands (the ones with wavy circles on the side) and stools as makeshift plant stands. Another is using floral wire or mini zip ties to make all my grow light wires hang out of the way of tripping while ties fade into furniture.

I use soda bottles or water bottles, cut in half and put holes in the bottom. Sometimes I cut them in half and put the top upside down and into the bottom and leave the top open, and don't drill holes in the bottom, then it keeps moisture inside, this is good if you live in the dessert.

I was out of large pots for my asparagus fern so I cut the top off a gallon water jug and made some drainage holes. Doesn't look the nicest but it will work until you can get a proper pot. Honestly I could probably paint the outside and make it look nicer but it was a temporary set up.
Also I cut the bottom off those Jugs for water trays too.
Plastic meat containers that are wrapped in plastic wrap, egg cartons, and bakery containers, I've used for propagation trays
Old pasta jars for vases for propagating, and candle glass is prettier
The yogurt cups I keep for plant saucers for my 2 in pots
Bamboo skewers are the best for me to see if soil is dry
I go to the good will a lot too, love saving money ❤ hope this helped anyone in a pinch!

I reuse lots of items for my bonsai collection such as the bottoms of larger plastic planters, I cut off about 4-5 inches of the bottoms of plastic buckets, plastic trays that contained some sort of meal, the bottoms of old plastic waste cans, really, anything that may look like a natural planter! I do this not to specifically recycle products but because anything with the name bonsai in it most likely means waaay more money (Pots, tools, soils, and certainly the trees!) when trying to purchase them from a nursery or big box store. Almost ALL of my trees I've collected from my own backyard. I have a couple that I've grown from seeds collected from other states but mostly I get them from the birds that live here they eat seeds they've found and then either excrete them out or bury them to have later! I have many almond bonsai trees and a few I've just left to grow in the ground. Funny how things come about when you're truly into them! Great channel my friend 👍

I have used echeveria leaves to prop, there was one which was almost successful, as soon as I changed it's soil medium thinking it would grow better if it had a container for it's own. It flopped.
All the other leaves failed, eventually turning black (the stems too). I have 2 Succulent leaves which now still look pale green and hopeful.
I used the box method on a Monstera stem which I accidentally ended up cutting without the leaf. I opened it after ages some time back and I saw a smol shoot. Hoping to repot it and wait for growth
I'm collecting clear takeout containers and plastic bottles and glass bottles as much as I can to water propogate. I will try using soil with glass jars more

Propagating roses is easy with a very high success rate if you remove ALL the leaves from the stem and use the exact same method as winter sowing in milk jugs or used 2 liter bottles. Humidity is key. Take cuttings at pruning time, pot up in a milk jug, etc. leave it in morning sun only - outdoors. Walk away and a couple months later you'll be ready to remove the lid and let it grow on till fall planting.

Most seeds need to be cured to avoid rotting. Give them a good period to dry out properly before planting them. Otherwise they will absolutely rot from the inside. I find a paper envelope for a week or 2 works best. Tomato seeds on the other hand need to be soaked until the seed and pulp separates. The pulp will float and the seeds sink to the bottom. Can take a few days, but once that step is done you can rinse and dry them and use them for the next growing season. ( I have grown A LOT of tomatoes from one of my father's beefsteak tomatoes this way and they get better every year.
You should never regrow seeds from squash you purchase or grew yourself if you plan on consuming them in case they have cross pollinated with a different type of squash. Fruit grown from seeds that have cross pollinated different types of squash or gourds can be fatally toxic. Better purchase seeds from a proper seed producer for that particular food. Unless you want to grow them for ornamental purposes, in which case, save and dry the seeds grow them to your heart's content 😁

Besides takeaway containers, egg cartons, juice boxes, chipped cups, glasses and bowls, I've used broken cooking pots and colanders as plant pots. Once it can hold soil, it's open season for me. My next experiment is to use strainers/filters. Your sponge idea is genius and I'll be trying that pretty soon with velvety leaf plants like episcias, African violet and my watermelon peperomia. Thanks for sharing.

Question about the succulent/jade plant propagation: once they grow those new little buds, do you detach the leaf they're growing from? Do you plant it?

That should have worked really. You could try putting a dome over it to get it some humidity (like a glass or something)

A few weeks? Depends on the succulent variety. I have some succulents which will sprout roots in one to two weeks and some take like 5 to 7 weeks it seems like. Anyway to speed it up? I think grey curl is one that takes a long time

i am still trying to figure out my prefered way of propagation.
i do have a perlite box or 2 i can put in a ton of stuff at the same time and it works well too so far but i m not really sure i like it. To me, propagating plants is super fun because every day you wake up and walk around the house checking all those little glasses and stuff to see if there are new tiny roots somewhere. and having them in glasses for water propagation is like... allready having a small plant somewhere putting some nice green into your home.
however storing 20 30 propagations inside a perlite box you re not supposed to open all the time so the humidity stays in... is simply not fun... its as if you would put all your plants inside a closet so you cant see them anymore

    • @SheffieldMadePlants
      @SheffieldMadePlants  Рік тому

These days I’m leaning more towards water just because it takes up less space. I find it slower though. You can open the prop box no problem

    • @MaybeTiberius
      @MaybeTiberius Рік тому +1

@@SheffieldMadePlants prop boxes are 1. ugly 2. take too much space as one item. i can have 20 propagations sitting in small containers around the house no problem. it looks nice and all of them take little space individually. but having a giant prop box sitting somewhere where it gets enough light just kills so much of the room aesthetics somehow.

I also use yogurt and soup plastic pots instead of buying nursery pots. They fits perfectly in a ceramic pot from Ikea (the white with a little line design who cost almost nothing).
I propagated my jade a lot! And I try with other succulents but I can't get a nice leaf...
Recently I buy a beautiful enclosure made for spiders, but I will use it for my jewel orchid 😅. It has a slide door so it is easy to get acces to the plants. They were cheaper than mini green house and they are as good for humidity, but have more ventilation tho since it's supposed to be for spiders 😅
