The fact that Linus had to explain how the button navigation worked. And I was just like oooh neat. *Memory unlocked* My last dumb phone was probably like 12 years ago. This would be pretty sick for pocket texting cause it's so small. You were a real cool kid if you could text under your desk at school, one handed without looking at the screen. Which is impossible nowadays because touchscreens don't have any positional feedback by design.
I can vouch against you on this, If you are good enough predictive text will save you. I have multiple videos of me staring my friends dead in the eye talking to them while I reply text prefect messages. It kinda freaked them out. If you don't believe me irdc, just pointing out it is possible.
I was so comfortable with T9 texting for this reason, but I never held out hope! I use an android phone with the Google default keyboard, which supports swipe typing. I've had so much practice now that I can legitimately type without looking at my screen simply by swiping through all of the letters. The only downside is that every few weeks it's ability to figure out words seems to tank since *it's claimed* that it uses some machine learning to help assist people with slightly different swipe styles.
A friend of mine had a very small phone around the year 2000. I wondered why anyone would like to have a tiny phone that you can barely hold and dial on. It was as thick as wide and had rounded corners everywhere. Now I finally know why there was an audience for that!
@@Gainn Your suggestions would make sense, but ... back in the day I had just bought a Nokia 6150 that was brand new to the market. That would place it in the year 1998. It was my second Nokia, so I was very familiar with Nokia Designs. The 6150 measured 129 x 47 x 28 mm (just looked it up) which is somewhat close to the 101.5 x 44.5 x 17.4 mm of the Nokia 8210. No, I clearly remember this tiny Cellphone was about half the width and length of my Nokia with Pinpoint small keys that seemed to be almost unusable with fingers. Prisoners are still people and people don't always resort to crime because they want to. It could be lack of choice. I had a friend who a few of his family members were known for crime. The voice changing features are useful, but rather.. suspicious. I would imagine if they were to transport it, it would be best to do with the battery off, so that it doesn't ring unexpectedly and will also extend the battery life by a lot.
on a phone *designed* to be smuggled into prison, you find the voice changing feature to be the thing that's suspicious? got a real sherlock phones here.
Personal phones in prison are for privacy, if you’re spending big bucks for one it’s because you have serious and very illegal business to conduct on the outside and can’t use the prison phones which are monitored. So while the voice changer is kind of niche, it could be useful for someone who is worried about their associates being wire tapped and then being recognized. The other option is it’s for someone truly messed up who wants to make threatening phone calls against people or entities they may hold a grudge against. You can imagine the things someone like Manson or another deranged psycho would use such a feature for.
I was going to buy something like this for emergency calls if I'd had an accident when out running but the shopkeeper was so sure that I'd needed it for the sort of use in this video that I was too embarassed to actually get it.
Any old cellphone can make emergency calls even if it's not activated. It's the law. You could also buy any pre-paid phone, burner phone, etc, with no account and still make emergency calls. Old cellphones, especially non smart phones, ones that stay charged for months when powered off, make great emergency phones.
@@OutdoorsIQ The GSM spec requires that 112 calls be made over whatever network. In Australia, and presumably other countries, 112 will redirect to your local equivalent.

There is a type of CRT TV shaped kind of like the old iMacs that had the built in monitors. They were designed to be allowed in prisons since you couldn't hide things in them easily. @@KaitouKaiju Phones aren't magic, they cant send if they have no power. problem is many phones don't actually disconnect power from components when they are turned "off." instead they just have a deep sleep function that replaces the off function. these functions were added by phone companies so your phone starts up faster not an alphabet agency. doesn't mean they don't take advantage of any means available to them obviously.

My last dumb phone was probably like 12 years ago. This would be pretty sick for pocket texting cause it's so small. You were a real cool kid if you could text under your desk at school, one handed without looking at the screen. Which is impossible nowadays because touchscreens don't have any positional feedback by design.
I miss being able to use a phone by sheer muscle memory without having to look at the screen.

@@Gainn Your suggestions would make sense, but ... back in the day I had just bought a Nokia 6150 that was brand new to the market. That would place it in the year 1998.
