There is so much in this Direct. The character breakdowns. A plethora of new items. The acknowledgment of the hardcore with "For Glory," but then also having variants of Final Destination. Smash Run for the 3DS looks awesome. The Charizard and Greninja's reveals were dope. (And Greninja uses a Substitute and we've got a Mega Charizard X; the sheer attention to detail is astonishing.)

I think that Charizard and Greninja might be like the Pokemon Trainer from Brawl, and therefore we might get another Pokemon reveal, like maybe Sceptile, but they'll all be 1 character

SirDman1999 Sakurai just said that they got rid of the swapping for Samus and Zelda for the same reason that the Trainer was apparently removed. We might get another pokemon, being a fully evolved grass-starter, but I doubt we'll see any switching between them.

what i appreciate most about the next smash is how sakurai is making the game more friendly towards the competitive scene. its faster, less random, and it incorporates a more streamlined combo system.
Not to mention how much control they're incorporating in the "For Glory" mode! It seems like the perfect mode to practice competitive play when you're alone.

It's not just the competitive crowd he's aiming to please--he has several shoutouts towards the casual crowd too! Sakurai is attempting to do the impossible, to make a game that is better for the competitive scene than Melee, and better for the casual scene than Brawl, at the same time! ...And so far, he's succeeding!

Funny how the logos for both versions foreshadows when they come out, the 3DS version is red which looks like fire (summer) and the WiiU version is blue which could be ice (winter), it's like we had the release dates from the start lol.

Rewatching this 10 years later hits very different, each of these directs having different English Translators is one example until they stopped having them with Min Min’s presentation. Watching the Assist Trophy showcase and seeing Dark Samus do unique attacks hurts, also Chef Kawashima replaced Isabelle as the AT that gives out food. The fakeouts of ZSS and Sheik not being cut are still funny and I wonder how Yoshi fans felt about him being revealed last.

I still think, all these years later, even with Ultimate, that the fact they were able to get a relatively fully featured version of Smash Bros running at 60fps on the Nintendo 3DS is a tremendous technical achievement.

Coding Omastar to come out of the thing would probably take too long, and if they even wanted to acknowledge that train wreck of an event then they'd just throw in a trophy.

I'm sure Mewtwo fans were disappointed that it was really Greninja in that ending trailer. But I'm guessing there's more to that than meets the eye.
As for the people who finished watching the trailer for the first time...
They didn't pay close attention to the Water Shuriken and thought it was an Aura Sphere/Shadow Ball kind of attack. That and the three fingers thing are the common reasons why many people thought he was Mewtwo.
Sakurai isn't just a "troll" - he's a guy with odd, yet clever mindgames. Perhaps he knew the Mewtwo trick would work and the development team are working on him in private, ready to reveal him at a later date like E3? Or perhaps becoming an unannounced unlockable character once the game ships. It's just like in Brawl where they didn't announce some of the characters that players unlocked in the game.

Sheik, Charizard, and Zero Suit Samus their own characters. Yoshi is back. Greninja announced too! Combine that with "For Glory" and "For Fun" modes, all levels having a Final Destination Mode, and Smash Run, Nintendo and Sakurai, take my money! Sidenote - I am sure Ness and Captain Falcon will be back in due time

Releasing the 3DS version first is actually a great idea. First off, because the 3DS version will release first, people will buy it, but still be eager to see the better looking Wii U version. Thus, lots of people will double-dip. Secondly, Nintendo isn't as worried about Wii U sales as you may think. They want larger profit. By releasing the 3DS version first, they get EVERYONE with a 3DS to buy it. And then the people who want the better version (most people) will buy the Wii U version. Doing it the other way around might result in similar Wii U sales, but also less 3DS sales. In other words, this is a great idea.

By releasing it on 3ds first, a larger install base gets to try out the game and realize how amazing it is. The Wii U version is heavily implied to be the superior version, so I think releasing it on 3ds first will instead convince more people to buy a wii u for when the console version hits.
***** Yea although the 3ds version is strong enough to stand on its own, I believe with this strategy the 3ds act as a 'demo' of sorts for the Wii U version. I mean point is, summer is right around the corner, so we get to start smashing soon. The complaints about the release window need to stop. Be glad your getting anything as early as summer.

This direct was beyond incredible. As a fan of competitive play, I'm super happy to see a "For Glory" option online, but I do wish more neutral stages such as Battlefield, Smashville, Dreamland, Fountain of Dreams etc. playable in this mode because we don't hate platforms. Cant complain tho, at least it's a step in the right direction and it shows Sakurai is paying attention to the competitive Smash community. Most stages having an FD version is sick news too!
I see it as reinforcing (and even propelling) the "No Items, Fox only, Final Destination" stereotype of competitive play, which is never a good thing. I'm glad that one vs one online are now available though. But we all know LAN is where Smash is at.

It seems that despite what everyone says about other stages that are supposedly competitive-fair, the stage that has absolutely no gimmicks at all is Final Destination. Even though people complain about the flatness of it making some techniques way too easy to pull off, it's still basically the most basic stage ever.
That's true, and FD is my most played stage anyway, but I do sometimes like to mix it up with other neutral stages. Speaking of stages I really hope dreamland comes back, was dissapointed to see it removed from Brawl

This direct went so much higher than my expectations!! It was simply AMAZING!!!
Only ONE thing I kind of didn't like, though - the release dates. I know we shouldn't expect it before winter, and it's awesome that the 3DS version is released already this summer, but I feel like the 3DS will ruin the feeling of the Wii U version. I mean, by releasing many months before, I feel like it will ruin a bit of the feeling of the Wii U version, by basically getting the same characters and same game (except stages and some gamemodes). It can be looked at in another way, though - like a preview or taste of the Wii U version while we wait :)
Either way, they showed so very much in this direct, I'm over hyped to play. And I have to admit - the Charizard and Greninja is the most badass motherf*cking trailer I've seen in my entire life!!!!
Think of it this way, and this is a total opinion, the 3DS one seems to be out shined by the Wii U one, so if you plan to get both 3DS and Wii U versions, be happy, take the 3DS one as if it were basically there for you to get use to the feel of the new games, to feel more familiar to the new characters, and mechanic changes, then when the 3DS one comes out, you'll already have some sort of an idea how it will play, and feel, you won't have to get use to it again, and again, this is how I feel about it, I much prefer the Wii U one, but am getting both versions, and am very happy either way.
I agree with you but Nintendo isn't in an optimal position with this game. Sakurai wasn't told about the game when it was first announced and was hired on to make it with his team. It's not a big team and being that the wii u has hd capabilities they had to hire namco bandai to help develop the game. With those issues he still got them done in 2 years. Also the 3DS is only capable of so much and a game like this is maxing out the flash cartridge. The delay is likely for a prettier game, a few added features we don't know about and an expanded online framework. Unfortunately even though the online has a lot of improvements I'm guessing there's still going to be limits to customization and dynamics and if they don't treat us all like kids who can't talk communicate with strangers online I'd be surprised.

I think they want the 3DS one out first so more people will buy it before they get the Wii U one. If they were released at the same time, most people would probably just get the Wii U one and the 3DS Smash sales wouldn't be very good. They want the 3DS version to have its moment, then finish it with Wii U version during the holiday season to get max sales, which is reasonable considering this is always one of Nintendo's biggest series releases. Also it could just be that the Wii U version's gonna take more time to finish, but I think it's mostly a sales decision.
