Never trust a company that tells you that unions are bad. Some companies will even restrict what all you can do in your career if you join a labor union. For instance, General Dynamic told me that I could work in a certain department, and if later I wanted to move to another area which I was more interested in and enjoyed more, I would be able to… as long as I didn’t join a union. That was literally saying that if I joined a union they would prevent me from moving elsewhere in my profession, a technician. I wish I had said something then because it was so wrong. It is discrimination of people in their labor unions. Clearly they can also stop you from being promoted as well. There has to be a better system for employees, but it would have to come from the government. There needs to be set minimum benefits depending on the size and profit of a company. Capitalism can be good, but it has gotten out of control with greed and apathy from executives. Narcissism is clearly running rampant at the “headquarters”. But guess what, these companies make $0 if not for its workers. Let them get out there and do the work themselves. I think it would also be great for employers to spend a week in the positions in which they are hiring for. Most of them know absolutely nothing about the work or conditions they push upon their workers. Amazon and Macy’s fulfillment centers seem to be exactly the same. I would suggest many more people rally to join or to create unions. Executives need to be kept in check. The government should be as well. They seem to keep forgetting who they work for. Those in government offices are the only employees that are paid more than their employers. Thanks to lobbying (legal bribery). I believe that if it wasn’t so profitable to be in politicos then more people who actually cared about the positions would do the job. For the last 3 decades, we have a congress that does absolutely nothing all day except insider trading.
I must say, Unions vary greatly from each other. Whether you are working a union or non-union job, the benefits and workers rights you experience at the work place were fought for and put into place by the unions. The 40 hr work week, the days off; child labor limitations, vacation, holidays, bereavement leave, maternity and paternity leave, minimum 1.5x OT pay etc. were all possible due to unions fighting for all workers. When it comes to trade workers, union is the way to go. I cannot stress this enough. Even if you hate unions, please feel free to enjoy what they've accomplished for all at the work place. Some laws in the US work place are simply piss poor compared to some other countries which is quite sad. Even still, union jobs will get you a hell of a lot more for the time you work than a non-union job. It amazes me how many people are always complaining how about wages, and benefits at the work place are lacking. The same people also bash unions. To each their own...
We got to see some of the cons this year. Teachers wanting parents out of the classroom. California dockworkers making an average of $170k refusing to help with overtime when ships backed up. We’re way passed the reason unions got started. Now they hold goods and services hostage when they’re upset.
@@KBTadieh So the american way are outdated? Strong workers unions its what every sivilised country need. Do live in a country were fired workers who take it to court end with forced REINSTATEMENT by court, 9/10 cases. Bless workers unions.
as a truck driver for over 20 years. Being all over the country i can honestly say that going to union places is the most miserable experience they are the slowest and most miserable people. I also went to truck driving school that was union. After I got my cdl I was on the property and some new students were talking to me and I was banned off of the property because an instructor thought I was giving them advice. Side note the school is no longer union.js
The one exception to unionization needs to be public employee unions. There is no real competition to most of their services. The public has no real counter to any demand a public employee union demands. So the politicians give them what they want and raise taxes. This is a principal reason why so many towns, cities, and states have financial issues today .A public employee union leads to corruption of both unions, public employees, and most of all elected officials. It generally works against the taxpayer, the public and in favor of the unions, their officials, and especially politicians.
They do plenty for their workers. I have family who works for them in a fulfillment center and they have good pay and benefits. Don’t listen to the BS you see on tv.
They dont do much for workers except pay. I know from EXPERIENCE. I worked there twice. They even tried fire everybody who wanted a union. I eventually quit.
Amazon has an annual cost of operation around $391 Billion... That is per year cost to run the company Breaking that down, it's $32.5 Billion per month cost of operation Their current cash reserve status (including assets that mature in less than 1 year) is $73 Billion This means Amazon has cash on hand to cover 2 months expenses. I seem to recall an Alux video a few days ago that said you should have 6 months worth of cash reserve... They're not as wealthy as you think!
It is interesting you didn't touch on VW. They are union throughout the world EXCEPT Chattanooga. Governor Bill Lee personally went to the plant to discourage unionizing. Also in Tennessee, by contrast, there is Nissan, and to discourage unionizing there, the company pays well and ensures workers are well cared for.
Conversely, Costco permits unionizing without any union busting or interference with employees if they decide to do so. Regardless if they are or not, Costco still treats its workers very well. It's a shame every company can't do the same. There's a difference in work quality too.
I was asked by my University to do research on Co-ops when I was there. It looked like and was presented as a business research and I treated co-ops as just another form of business and not some political monster. Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Harry Truman are Presidents I can think of who claim to be "Union Presidents" but so far as I know none of them were ever card carrying Union Members. Just politicians who talk us to death much of the time. I apologize for this comment but after years of studying in school and some exposure to political politicians I think I've been talked to death at times. Actually the co-op people I met told me they supported Unions... I did not learn this in college from my professors and advisors... and quite honestly they did not want me around if I was not actively pro-union. For me the issue is money and not some sort of ideological crusade. Good companies like GM and Ford have Unions, but they pay good money anyway. If you have the choice of an hourly wage with or without unions... I'd rather have the social skills do deal with other employees and management than ask Unions to do this for me while I tend to machines. From what I hear, having friends where you work and being part of the team (playing sports and such) as well as being qualified and competent might be more important overall than Unions. In any case, they aren't always a guarantee of Higher income or better wages. As to the politics associated with Unions, so far as I can tell, the pro-Union Presidents I mentioned earlier received support from Union leaders and Union organizers to help their political careers. Unions have helped make their careers and their success stories. While some of the rest of us suffer.
@@PoorPlyser When I was in High School I remember one teacher in particular who "supported" Labor Unions. My Dad did not much like Labor Unions and it drove him nuts when I'd come home and say something this teacher told me. In College I studied American Market Economics. The basic first year course and textbook mentions that Unions are a part of the American Economy. Further study in Management and you learn as a Manager in the modern American Legal system if someone wants to try to organize a Labor Union then you should let them. I have no reason to try to "hurt" workers and I don't want to argue with Professional Economists who are often Genius level intelligence or higher so I have do difficulty with the textbook and I have spoken with and known Labor Union Leaders. But "Union" can have a second meaning not in the textbooks and not taught in Economics Class and not mentioned in High School. Hard core Union people can be Communists, anti-American, suggest radical economic change that would require a revolution to pay for and some are alleged to be involved with Organized Crime. These radicals have accused me of "opposing" Unions even though there is no evidence and quite honestly there has never been any reason for me to say much more than what was taught in Class. I guess I should tell people, that I was a good and dedicated student from about my Kindergarten year. I am no where near the concept of "truth" when it comes to Unions or Economics or a lot of other issues. I am human and work hard to be the best person I can be and best student and teacher I can be. It annoys and frustrates me when I am misquoted. It aggravates me when I am deliberately ripped off by people who know better. One Union leader who I suggest might have been radical or anti-American called me a "woman" for taking the school or academic view on Unions and it has been suggested that I should become Political. For me, given the choice between being educated and earning an honest living or being Political and perhaps being radically dishonest and misrepresenting facts, I think I would generally like to side with education and truth - unless I am certain of the propaganda and misinformation. And don't ask me to make sense of this. Just understand that there are radicals and criminals associated with the word "Union" who have in truth accused me of opposing dishonesty and lies... and I proudly admit to siding with truth and justice and, yes, the American Way.
@@PoorPlyser As I say, the people I met did not advertise themselves as being "Union People". They operated under a different label and then informed me after over 2 years of research and work associated with a University Research project. The research cost me in terms of real dollars and "opportunity cost" (which is a term you learn in Economics) quite possibly $30,000. In some ways this was a long job interview and the Unions decided they didn't want me after I had spent the money and the University apparently was pressured by Union interests to reject my research. Furthermore, Unions have harassed me many times since this research. Most companies send you a letter of rejection and then allow you to apply somewhere else. I have no idea why the University pushed the research project so strongly ... clearly this outcome was a "bad" outcome for my life and as a start to the end of my College academic career.
Let me try to elevate this conversation a bit and bring up President Dwight Eisenhower. He worked with some of the groups that I has the pleasure of meeting with in College. But Eisenhower was paid, of course and even being paid he chose a life of service to America. Ike wanted all Americans to work together whether they were Labor Unions, non-Labor, corporate or whatever and he had special insight into America and how business and workers coexisted. If you examine an American Automobile today whether it is Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Hummer or Jeep, you will understand that both Union-made parts and parts made by non-union workers are in the final product. All Americans work together to build American products and that's the way it should be in my opinion too. I get all sorts of petty rivalries at times where people don't like my religious upbringing or want to criticize the University I attended or complain about my political views or race and ethnic background. But if we look at the big picture, aren't the Laws regulating much of these activities meant to bring us together and unite us and benefit us all as a people? Mentioning Eisenhower, as I write this Russia is invading the Ukraine. I suspect all of the Russian Generals who participated in World War II are also dead. But we could really use Ike's knowledge and experience today. War has been different for many years but Ike understood "the bomb" and would have seen the potential of new and modern weapons in ways most Americans can only read about. We probably need a Dwight Eisenhower today more than ever... in both war and peace.

I'm not a huge supporter of most unions in America, they tend to owe too much to organized crime. However, the Four-A unions, the unions for actors, musicians and other artists are essential and worthy groups. The old 'star system' - which was ended by the unions - was little short of legal slavery for the artists involved.

Exactly lol. The big unions take the worker's money via union dues, then donate it to Democrat candidates who will support their union. Unions are looking out for themselves first and foremost.

I grew up in Britain in the days before Thatcher. In the 50s, 60s and 70s the unions held a lot of political power and made our coal and car industries uncompetitive on the global markets because they were always going on strike and producing inferior quality at inflated prices. Nobody wanted British coal when they could get it cheaper and more reliably from Germany and this led to pits being closed by both Labour, and later Conservative, governments. There were regular blackouts and shortages culminating in the Winter of Discontent (1978) when the streets were overflowing with rubbish and the dead were going unburied. Union greed and corruption almost brought the country to its knees and contributed to Thatcher's victory in 1979. UK unions were never again as powerful, but they only have themselves to blame.

Many unions have become Greedy and imbedded with the companies . United State postal service is the worst here in California; been there 16 years and the wages are so bad; we pay a fortune for medical and my retirement is Junk . I love working here; however I can barely afford to live😊
This is the problem with public employee unions. USPS employees are the only federal government employees who are allowed to negotiate for their wages and benefits. They get both federal employee health and retirement benefits and their union negotiated benefits. Thus their health care is almost completely paid. All other federal employees pay substantially more for their health care.
Private unions? Absolutely. Public unions? No way in hell. Do nothing & expect time & 1/2. Can retire after 25 yrs-so taxpayer has to pay them for FORTY+ YEARS for truly doing nothing. In NY, 41% of every tax dollar goes to pay their pensions & healthcare. NOT EVEN INCLUDING SALARIES. They need to be subject to market forces as many of them wouldn’t t last a week at a 10 y/o’s lemon stand
Labour unions are good, most of the time they provide protection to powerless &oppressed workers. However , they can be dangerous sometimes.Especially when the union leaders use it as political tool. Also in an environment with strong trade unions , firing incompent workers is difficult coz they can use the power of the union badly.
My opinion is no. I'm in the Ironworkers Union and I would not work for a non union company again. Our training, safety, pay , and benefits can not be matched by a non union company.
Selling FASCISM is it the least bit helpful either !!! While destroying half the WORKING-CLASS with the crime of BRIBERY Nazis have used involved !!! For the scientific evidence use the science textbook ((The Science of Corruption in Governments)) !!!
Alux forgot to add that it's because of high Financial demands from unions to the hiring companies, like high pay per hour, pensions & benefits that it's costing companies too much to hire American workers or producing their products in America is too much, so they ship these jobs to overseas. IT IS BECAUSE OF UNIONS THAT AMERICAN JOBS ARE BEING SHIPPED OUT TO CHINA, INDIA, THE PHILIPPINES, TAIWAN & MANY MANY OTHER COUNTRIES WHERE LABOR IS CHEAPER!!!
Unions can be in any work environment but in America most commonly they're in construction, factories, healthcare, and education. Even if a workplace doesn't have a union you could start one. You can look up a local union and get a job through them as well. If you wanted to go into construction it would be a good idea to to learn to weld as that's an in demand skill and you could get a job pretty easily

In the US, the vast majority of union members are in the public sector. Who are these public sector unions collectively bargaining against?
Hello guys I’m 17 I want to work in a union after high school, but I’m not sure on what type of union, any recommendations from any older folks

We got to see some of the cons this year. Teachers wanting parents out of the classroom. California dockworkers making an average of $170k refusing to help with overtime when ships backed up. We’re way passed the reason unions got started. Now they hold goods and services hostage when they’re upset.

Strong workers unions its what every sivilised country need.
Do live in a country were fired workers who take it to court end with forced REINSTATEMENT by court, 9/10 cases.
Bless workers unions.
Many nations that have high union density don't have a minimum wage... Because they don't need one.
as a truck driver for over 20 years.

Why worry, why wait? Times are changing so fast, even unions will be a thing of the past!!
as long as there are workers there will be a need for unions to protect labor rights
Always Go Union !
Amazon should do more for it's workers given how successful the company is.
They do plenty for their workers. I have family who works for them in a fulfillment center and they have good pay and benefits.
Don’t listen to the BS you see on tv.
@Trevor B facts they should pay they workers more
They dont do much for workers except pay. I know from EXPERIENCE. I worked there twice. They even tried fire everybody who wanted a union. I eventually quit.
Amazon has an annual cost of operation around $391 Billion... That is per year cost to run the company
Breaking that down, it's $32.5 Billion per month cost of operation
Their current cash reserve status (including assets that mature in less than 1 year) is $73 Billion
This means Amazon has cash on hand to cover 2 months expenses. I seem to recall an Alux video a few days ago that said you should have 6 months worth of cash reserve... They're not as wealthy as you think!
@@businessoutsidethelines yea I saw that video also but they are like the richest company in world right now …. Right
It is interesting you didn't touch on VW. They are union throughout the world EXCEPT Chattanooga. Governor Bill Lee personally went to the plant to discourage unionizing.
Also in Tennessee, by contrast, there is Nissan, and to discourage unionizing there, the company pays well and ensures workers are well cared for.

One thing you DO know about teacher's unions...THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR KIDS!!!!
I was asked by my University to do research on Co-ops when I was there. It looked like and was presented as a business research and I treated co-ops as just another form of business and not some political monster. Bill Clinton,
Joe Biden and Harry Truman are Presidents I can think of who claim to be "Union Presidents" but so far as I know none of them were ever card carrying Union Members.
So you're saying unions are bad?
@@rizmacadillac so maybe?

This is the problem with public employee unions. USPS employees are the only federal government employees who are allowed to negotiate for their wages and benefits. They get both federal employee health and retirement benefits and their union negotiated benefits. Thus their health care is almost completely paid. Hello guys I’m 17 I want to work in a union after high school, but I’m not sure on what type of union, any recommendations from any older folks
