Maragret Levi's TED Talk about unions was excellent. As a former labor relations specialist, I am not against unions. However, I have no love loss for union or nonunion workers that do not respect boundaries, safety regulations, or policies that were put in place to protect them.
One of the biggest industries that needs a union is retail. Working with the public all day is mentally and physically draining. Only receiving 30-60 break with no benefits. Is someone gets sick, a family emergency, home or car emergency and they are unable to work, majority of them won't get paid. Employers hire people under a part-time status but given full time hours so as to not have to provide health benefits. People should be paid according to their experience but unfortunately, they are not. Unions would also keep upper management from hiring their "buddies" over someone more qualified, regardless of race or sexual orientation, etc. The years I spent in retail and always had the same statement arise in my mind with every employer was "it doesn't have to be this way". Meaning that the chaos that is rampant in retail, doesn't have to be there.
I fully support this, the trouble is that often retail is seen by workers as a temporary job while they’re studying or until they find something better. It’s not seen as a long-term career and so workers don’t invest the same energy and risk in creating unions. This is just my understanding though, I could be wrong
I’m one year into a middle management position as a social worker. I was raised in a working class pro-union family. My work is in the early stages of unionization and I am THRILLED. I am sickened by how our administration (many of whom are social workers and/or belong to marginalized groups) must have forgotten what it’s like on the ground, or even at middle management. Even tho I can’t join (which sucks- I am very much still in the trenches… looking for clients in crack houses, etc.) I am so hopeful for the changes that this could bring.
Unions are great for their members but bad for society. That's ok it's just how interest groups work. Silly to pretend they're for the good of everyone though.

Read about Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar situated in Harayana, India or the strike of works in Washington Post and you will understand the point I'm making. Also, as far as I have seen, the best employee benefits and working conditions are seen in IT products and services business which has the lowest degree of unionization. So, unions do have a role to play, but they aren't always right.

Unions are good and bad. Having worked in construction management and consulting, I found it ridiculous that we had to place a Teamster on a job site with ‘his’ own trailer, phone, etc. at the manager’s expense when it was premature to have one onsite. I can go on about this part of what I call corrupt. On the good side, I totally agree that unions protected workers from all abuses. Alternative unions are a great idea.
I think this is it exactly. When people politicise unions they are thought to be all good or all bad. The truth is, like many issues, there are pros and cons.
America's system is not the same in the rest of the world. America's society favours those with money, in power. The only true power a worker has is the right to withdraw their labour.
I'm a union pipefitter from the south. I was shocked to see the presence of the teamsters on construction sites when I worked up north. I'm not saying it's bad, but it adds an extra obstacle for production.
I think the structure of unions is the problem in the United States. In countries like Germany the unions are more integrated into the company, this breaks down the hostility and the us versus them mentality.

At the beginning of the industrial revolution, employers (if they could be called that) & government had all the power. Unions came out of the 30’s & grew in power through the 60’s and 70’s. In the 80’s corporations began gradually working politically to reduce union power. That started with Regan. In the 2000’s that came to fruition as corporations gained more political control & made it very difficult for unions to be effective. Now there is a union resurgence and it’s necessary & can have an impact IF union members are wary of who is running things. That said, the real economic & political power today is in the hands of the consumer. Governments & corporations are completely addicted to cooperative consumer behaviour. There are no consumer unions yet. There may never be. But imagine the power they could wield.

Do you maybe have any resources on how such a union might be structured, and what functions it might fulfill? Or if you have the time, just share your thoughts on the matter. I am very intrigued by this concept, as I am both vegan (which is cooperative/collective consumer action!) and from a country that has functioning labour unions (though, being dismantled more and more)

I’m at a stage in my life where I’m unlikely to take up organizing such a thing but I nonetheless believe it’s perfectly viable. traditional unions are comparatively narrowly focused whereas an organized consumer base would not be limited to fighting for only working wages & conditions. I have some tactics in mind & have thought about some of the problems but it’s a bit much to lay out here. If you want more let me know and I’ll see about an email account you can use. There is a surge of unionization in my state which is good however the local UFCW union leadership is questionable at best. But I guess a watered down union is better than nothing.
“Right-to-work?” Come on over to Minnesota, we’ll take care of ya. My buddy just moved from Wisconsin, worked for the IBEW in Wisconsin and hated it. He quit and worked as a non-union welder for years. He finally took my advice and joined the St. Paul pipefitters union. He’ll tell ya it’s the best decision he’s ever made in his life.
A new paradigm of Unions by Margaret Levi for a developed economy, in Latin America we have to put the focus on the one hand of members of unions whom dealed rigths, social labour benefits with owners of companies and on the other hand the goverments which not guaranted progressive labour rigths, its needed a balance between wages a labour benefits for a renewed and more progressive worker class beyond its tuition, education for better productions methods.
In Scandinavia, we have unions; in my opinion, they should be tamed. Unions basically just closed down the Scandinavian Airlines. That is government-backed. Sweden just sold all their shares. There is a strike warning from the pilots. So, in my opinion. Unions are necessary, but they need to adapt to modern life.
So.... what union? The skilled trades often excite a degree of participation by union members, but many other union like the SEIU, UFCW and such are typically run by a political machine with little real worker input, and union members usually have little information on the union they belong to. Does your union offer you meaningful information and opportunities to participate and learn how the union works?
Yes please bring back unions. Raising the minimum wage is not the answer. The loss of unions is a problem. That's why people in skilled trades are leaving by the droves.

Probably the UFCW then. So how is the union treating members --- and treating you in particular? And how do employees and the union get along with Kroger? UFCW local unions are usually honest but run by political machines due to lack of interest by union members. Still, if you want to participate, you probably can. My interest led me to being appointed as a delegate to the King County (Seattle area) labor council by a UFCW local, which led me to a career of sorts as a union business agent and organizer.
It's unfortunate that almost all unions are political machines with little real opportunity for members to have real input i9nto how the union is run.; Federal law requires that union officers stand for election every three years, but participation by members is so poor and almost all have such little knowledge about their union that elections have limited real meaning ----most of the time. At other times they have involved the crudest kinds of intimidation, violence and murder, as was true in a national United Mine Workers Union election. A few unions, such as the United Auto Workers, have significant member participation. But even here, that translates into a demand for excessive wage and benefit increases which have damaged or destroyed the companies union members worked for. That can invite corruption too. That has been a problem in the past with the Teamsters and Longshore unions in times past, but perhaps that has been cleaned up. And perhaps Federal law enforcement keeps an eye out for such corruption to prevent it from being hugely damaging ---I don't really know.

The usual justification for that is that union membership and a union job is inherited through unions the way property is inherited by the wealthy. In the United States, unions of skilled trades such as electricians and plumbers often give a preference to the children of union members for entry into apprenticeship programs.

Yes, public employee unions have outthought politicians and the public, especially regarding pensions. In my view, that would be fine IF politicians were free to cut pension benefits when that shoe started to pinch. But unions and courts like to claim that pension rights are a "contract" that can be increased, but never cut. Unions zealously argue for collective bargaining, except when they don't!
There is good and particularly the history and where it has brought us from the beginning of the century and of course the wages, security, benefits it can offer. However it has been very abused where union workers are protected good or bad workers emphasis on bad. I worked in a college system with contracts, unionized 3 month at a time and the odd not so well paid 3 contracts. I worked hard, dedicated and in gratitude. The full timers don’t like it, makes them look bad because they are non fireable which leaves very little room for good employees or jobs for the contract workers to grow into willing to contribute to the employer and positive productivity. So much abuse by lazy uncaring employees, unfire- able ungrateful individuals. I experienced this for for decades. Good caring management gets bullyied/fired out by the corrupted ones. That’s my personal experience. So many no governmental companies simple packed up left town, others folded due to this uncaring mentality the has become viral epidemic. Construction in Southern Ontario is so exploited by unions it’s simply veil (my bothers has been a sites manager his whole life the frustrations obtaining good employees os beyond the charts. This ideology of hers is very one sided ideology with no concrete solutions clearly also no clue of the down sides (or at the very least the willingness to explore the realities openly). Rather she should figure out solutions to this metal virus and a way that keeps people on there toes and allows good workers to rise in there positions to work with employers as well as employees. No good workers means companies go out of business or country and in the end everyone pays like for example our absolutely vile house market in Ontario. Average house price 1 million dollars and up. New builds with material, inflation, bad government and over paid useless lazy workers plays a factor.

We are not living in that world now. We are living in the affect of unions which is why we are worse off as a result. unions did not build the middle class as much as it was a de facto result from there not being other groups outside of the United States capable of manufacturing at the time. In that way unions created the middle class. But on the other side of the sword it has also taken from the middle class, as manufacturing capabilities around the world developed the leverage American manufacturing benefited from no longer had the same demand… Thus without disbandment of union labor and increasing pressure of increased wage laws, these things served no other purpose but to act counter productively against the middle class. But sure we have weekends… lol People who advocate for unions haven’t actually thought about the destruction that have been left in their wake.

If you think unions are 100 % good without any down sides I think you are not too familiar with systems where they are more common. Even in Finland, many people decide to not be a member even when for us it is truly a choise and the employer is not strongarming anyone about not joining.

Given time unions collectively bargain their jobs away. I was UAW, been there and done that. Look around your house or office, can you find anything made in America? We compete in a world market today, this is 2023 NOT 1963. Yes, I was UAW after losing a career with a Fortune 500 Co. I replaced a very respectable income by going into business for myself. I wore all the hats, I was CEO, Purchasing agent, production worker, custodian, etc. in my little industry. I managed my resources and planned for retirement and I am an investor. Start your own business, and at the end of each week, you will know precisely what you are worth in the marketplace. I would be delighted to educate Margret, she is painfully naive.
TED, im not feeling this one. Unions allow the lazy, unmotivated slacking types to not be held accountable due to labor agreements... yet those inferior employees reap the same benefits and rewards as those workers who excel. That will never make sense to me. The individual obviously cannot excel like many wish to in a union world since all members must be treated the same. And when business must cut back....its the most tenured who are safest. NOT the best, not the most motivated, not the ones with most potential. Kinda squashes the enthusiasm of individuals who want to make a difference on a daily basis. A difference for them.... like advancement as a reward for their excellence. Back in the 1960's I was an indentured apprentice and belonged to a craft union. The union provided us with bargaining rights, a safe work area, vacation, retirement, etc. It was up to each member to be able to keep his own job and if he was laid off he had to find himself another job or move to another city where he could find a job. Many years later, I worked for a manufacturing company that was union (Steelworkers). Management constantly wined about how the union workers were lazy and did whatever they wanted. I asked the plant manager if they had a contract with the union. The plant manager looked me squarely in the eyes and said "of course the did". I simply said "then why aren't you following the agreement". You see, the problem is not union's, its bad management. Management that's incompetent. Humans will follow a leader and if Management does not lead, the union will take control. For decades companies blame unions when the real issue is BAD MANAGEMENT!!
In Economics, a monopoly is the worst system from the buyer’s point of view. Most countries have laws that stop companies from forming monopolies and when monopolies can’t be helped, they regulate their prices. Simply, monopolies are bad for the consumer. Unions, by definition, are a labour monopoly. The result is that some people get more pay (unfairly), for the same work, compared to others. Companies have much less flexibility to business changes. People get promoted based on “time in their chair” rather than performance, etc. Government, by definition, is a monopoly. Almost all government labour is locked in unions (labour monopoly) which results in huge waste of money for taxpayers. At some point in history, government didn’t regulate minimum wages, days off, overtime pay, vacation pay etc. Unions probably started most of these activities 👏 but all of these work rules are now controlled by the government so why do we need unions? Unions distort wages between union and non-union work. Unions allow certain groups of our society to extort salaries that private enterprise would never allow. People in unions don’t get more money based on merit but on extortion. Unions are holding us back, not making a better future so 👍 to the demise of all unions. RIP

Even if unions were totally corrupt, the only way to fix it is from inside the union. Unlike political parties or the government the Union gets it's power from the masses themselves. It's essentially the only real democracy we have. It used to be thirty percent of jobs and back then one man could provide a middle class lifestyle for a family of five. Now it's 5% and you couldn't afford that on two incomes! See the connection? Maybe watch again but this time hear her out.
@@rickbuell8996 oh yeah, a union is why the aircraft repair shop I worked for went out of business. because we couldn't work on eastern airlines airplanes we lost work, then they insisted that we get paid despite not having contracts, so we had to show up and play cards for 3 months. eventually this BS led to the company closing. thank you union. luckily because of a screw up in payroll they never deducted union dues from my checks so at least I kept my money. thankfully I never had to work for one again and made WAY more money because of it.

Unions currently seem to exist as a force against companies power and their control over employee paychecks. And as such are often in conflict with companies. One of the changes should be to have the union become the employer and provide well trained workers to the company. Unions should compete against non-union employees by providing better trained employees who need no support from a companies HR and payroll departments. They would necessarily need to help the companies to whom the provide employees to be as successful as possible. Thus balancing the needs of workers and companies to greater achievements than the current advisorial arrangement allows.
The workers are in a class conflict with the capitalist class. It's the capitalist profit system that is in a world wide crisis caused by its own natural workings.

They shud pass the cooling off period law like the Indian Govt. did, which basically says you have to wait till three months before starting a strike.
In Australia they had rolling train strikes because the new trains are "unsafe", even though they run fine in dozens of other countries.

UFCW local unions are usually honest but run by political machines due to lack of interest by union members.
Still, if you want to participate, you probably can. My interest led me to being appointed as a delegate to the King County (Seattle area) labor council by a UFCW local, which led me to a career of sorts as a union business agent and organizer.

It's unfortunate that almost all unions are political machines with little real opportunity for members to have real input i9nto how the union is run.; Federal law requires that union officers stand for election every three years, but participation by members is so poor and almost all have such little knowledge about their union that elections have limited real meaning ----most of the time. At other times they have involved the crudest kinds of intimidation, violence and murder, as was true in a national United Mine Workers Union election.
A few unions, such as the United Auto Workers, have significant member participation. But even here, that translates into a demand for excessive wage and benefit increases which have damaged or destroyed the companies union members worked for.
That can invite corruption too. That has been a problem in the past with the Teamsters and Longshore unions in times past, but perhaps that has been cleaned up. And perhaps Federal law enforcement keeps an eye out for such corruption to prevent it from being hugely damaging ---I don't really know.

The usual justification for that is that union membership and a union job is inherited through unions the way property is inherited by the wealthy.

There is good and particularly the history and where it has brought us from the beginning of the century and of course the wages, security, benefits it can offer. However it has been very abused where union workers are protected good or bad workers emphasis on bad. I worked in a college system with contracts, unionized 3 month at a time and the odd not so well paid 3 contracts. I worked hard, dedicated and in gratitude. The full timers don’t like it, makes them look bad because they are non fireable which leaves very little room for good employees or jobs for the contract workers to grow into willing to contribute to the employer and positive productivity. So much abuse by lazy uncaring employees, unfire- able ungrateful individuals. I experienced this for for decades. Good caring management gets bullyied/fired out by the corrupted ones. That’s my personal experience.
So many no governmental companies simple packed up left town, others folded due to this uncaring mentality the has become viral epidemic. Construction in Southern Ontario is so exploited by unions it’s simply veil (my bothers has been a sites manager his whole life the frustrations obtaining good employees os beyond the charts. This ideology of hers is very one sided ideology with no concrete solutions clearly also no clue of the down sides (or at the very least the willingness to explore the realities openly). Rather she should figure out solutions to this metal virus and a way that keeps people on there toes and allows good workers to rise in there positions to work with employers as well as employees. No good workers means companies go out of business or country and in the end everyone pays like for example our absolutely vile house market in Ontario. Average house price 1 million dollars and up. New builds with material, inflation, bad government and over paid useless lazy workers plays a factor.

unions did not build the middle class as much as it was a de facto result from there not being other groups outside of the United States capable of manufacturing at the time.
In that way unions created the middle class. But on the other side of the sword it has also taken from the middle class, as manufacturing capabilities around the world developed the leverage American manufacturing benefited from no longer had the same demand…
Thus without disbandment of union labor and increasing pressure of increased wage laws, these things served no other purpose but to act counter productively against the middle class.

If you think unions are 100 % good without any down sides I think you are not too familiar with systems where they are more common. Even in Finland, many people decide to not be a member even when for us it is truly a choise and the employer is not strongarming anyone about not joining.

I wore all the hats, I was CEO, Purchasing agent, production worker, custodian, etc. in my little industry. I managed my resources and planned for retirement and I am an investor. Unions allow the lazy, unmotivated slacking types to not be held accountable due to labor agreements... yet those inferior employees reap the same benefits and rewards as those workers who excel. That will never make sense to me.
The individual obviously cannot excel like many wish to in a union world since all members must be treated the same.
And when business must cut back....its the most tenured who are safest. NOT the best, not the most motivated, not the ones with most potential. Kinda squashes the enthusiasm of individuals who want to make a difference on a daily basis.

If unions weren’t full of the laziest people in the trades they wouldn’t have such a bad reputation. They take twice as long to get a job done and cost three times as much.
Back in the 1960's I was an indentured apprentice and belonged to a craft union. The union provided us with bargaining rights, a safe work area, vacation, retirement, etc. It was up to each member to be able to keep his own job and if he was laid off he had to find himself another job or move to another city where he could find a job. Many years later, I worked for a manufacturing company that was union (Steelworkers). Management constantly wined about how the union workers were lazy and did whatever they wanted. I asked the plant manager if they had a contract with the union. The plant manager looked me squarely in the eyes and said "of course the did". I simply said "then why aren't you following the agreement". You see, the problem is not union's, its bad management. Management that's incompetent. Humans will follow a leader and if Management does not lead, the union will take control.
For decades companies blame unions when the real issue is BAD MANAGEMENT!!

In Economics, a monopoly is the worst system from the buyer’s point of view. Most countries have laws that stop companies from forming monopolies and when monopolies can’t be helped, they regulate their prices. Simply, monopolies are bad for the consumer. Unions, by definition, are a labour monopoly. The result is that some people get more pay (unfairly), for the same work, compared to others. Companies have much less flexibility to business changes. People get promoted based on “time in their chair” rather than performance, etc. Government, by definition, is a monopoly. Almost all government labour is locked in unions (labour monopoly) which results in huge waste of money for taxpayers.
At some point in history, government didn’t regulate minimum wages, days off, overtime pay, vacation pay etc. Unions probably started most of these activities 👏 but all of these work rules are now controlled by the government so why do we need unions? Unions distort wages between union and non-union work. Unions allow certain groups of our society to extort salaries that private enterprise would never allow. People in unions don’t get more money based on merit but on extortion.
Unions are holding us back, not making a better future so 👍 to the demise of all unions. RIP

Even if unions were totally corrupt, the only way to fix it is from inside the union. Unlike political parties or the government the Union gets it's power from the masses themselves. It's essentially the only real democracy we have. It used to be thirty percent of jobs and back then one man could provide a middle class lifestyle for a family of five. Now it's 5% and you couldn't afford that on two incomes! See the connection? Maybe watch again but this time hear her out.

@@rickbuell8996 oh yeah, a union is why the aircraft repair shop I worked for went out of business. because we couldn't work on eastern airlines airplanes we lost work, then they insisted that we get paid despite not having contracts, so we had to show up and play cards for 3 months. eventually this BS led to the company closing. thank you union. luckily because of a screw up in payroll they never deducted union dues from my checks so at least I kept my money. thankfully I never had to work for one again and made WAY more money because of it.

Unions currently seem to exist as a force against companies power and their control over employee paychecks. And as such are often in conflict with companies. One of the changes should be to have the union become the employer and provide well trained workers to the company. Unions should compete against non-union employees by providing better trained employees who need no support from a companies HR and payroll departments. They would necessarily need to help the companies to whom the provide employees to be as successful as possible. Thus balancing the needs of workers and companies to greater achievements than the current advisorial arrangement allows.
The workers are in a class conflict with the capitalist class. It's the capitalist profit system that is in a world wide crisis caused by its own natural workings.
