    Hey bud, I live in my camper full time up in Canada, I use those foam workout pads on my floor during the winter and they do really well keeping my feet warm without taking away much head space.

    Lol... I was explaining something about one of your videos to my wife. I watch several van lifers and was trying to figure out how to explain who I was talking about. So I said, "the one that doesn't do his dishes." And she knew.

      A young guy, living in a van, alone, while documenting it, and doing all these adventures... And the van is already suuuper nice, look at how his spices is stored...
      I´m totally thinking the opposite. That he´s a very sofisticated young man.
      "Clean your Apron!" - He HAS one. Living in a VAN. I´m 35 and have never owned one in my life.
      I dont think people appreciate how hard it actually is to live in these types of unconventinal ways. How much energy and time and planning it takes to just maintain yourself. Your hygien, food, electrics, water.
      He cooks in a VAN that he built. Only people that has done that and been living in it for a couple years should be able to complain, and then they certainly wouldn´t.

    If you find yourself stuck in the snow, one tip is to disable the ESP/Traction Control feature. This function is designed to prevent your wheels from spinning too quickly, which may hinder your ability to gain traction. By turning off this feature, you can maximize the power to your tires, making it easier to get unstuck.
    Just remember to turn it back on once you are on the move again.

    • @coryvallad7578
      @coryvallad7578 10 місяців тому +6

      also let some air out of your tires not a shit ton but a good amount

      Also, another pro tip that's saved me countless times is use your floor mats for traction under your tires if you get stuck

    • @draco4540
      @draco4540 5 місяців тому

      the pros and cons of traction control. it can come in handy, but a lot of times in winter, it can be more of a hinderance.

    • @curiousnomadic
      @curiousnomadic 24 дні тому

      From someone who has driven in the snow since age 16/ Spinning your wheels is when you get stuck. The reason he didn't get stuck was because he was smart enough not to spin. Traction control just mimics the way a good snow driver driving a manual transmission can feel when you lose traction.

    Ryan, you should make a video where you talk about the things you like about your current van and what you would change if you made a new one. Like, would you change the layout or add a more permanent shower, stuff like that. It would be really interesting.

      most people don't realize you can move the gear lever left while in the drive position to change it to manual mode for just such an occasion, then shift it to the right, going past the highest gear (at least in dodge models) to return to full automatic

    That's hilarious; I-40 being shut down - my wife and I were driving back to Arizona from Albuquerque when you recorded this and 40 was done, so we had to detour north into the Navajo Nation. In a frikkin' blizzard. Driving those back roads in white-out conditions was no bueno. Made it to Flag and decided, screw this, we're getting a hotel room. People don't realize how quickly 40, or even I-17, can shut down because of weather up there in northern AZ. Or a dummy causing a wreck and messing things up (especially 17; it happens a lot and there's not exactly a lot of alternate routes north/south in AZ, lol). Glad you stayed safe out there!

    Your van always looks good. It is always stylish and not cluttered, like some others I have seen. So no harm in having some undone dishes in the sink. it's not like you leave them for extended periods of time. Also, it's better not to make a bed as soon as you get up in the morning -- bedding needs to air for a while.

    You can chop bacon and par cook it before adding it to your burger meat as well as chunks of cheese. So good!
    You did a great job committing while driving in the snow through the barrier that the plows had created. I had a rear wheel drive Volvo 250 back in the day in Vermont when we had some of the largest snow storms on record. The place I worked had a dirt road that went up a very steep hill. I had to gun it and pray I wouldn’t end up in the trees. As long as your wheels have traction and you keep your momentum as well as confidence it typically works out.

    It has to be kind of fun being stuck in a snow storm like this, you know you have days of diesel to keep you warm, you have food, I guess the major issue would be power I can't remember if he has solar or not but still in a snow storm probably not getting the best charge. But there is something kind of cozy about knowing you're just chilling in your van playing video games cooking cheeseburgers while chaos is happening outside lol

    UA-cam just randomly chose this video for me and it’s so funny because I am realizing that I was caught in probably the same snowstorm. I wasn’t supposed to stop that day until I got to New Mexico but I ended up staying at a hotel in Flaggstaff because the interstate shut down and I had even had to wait on the freeway for about an hour and a half for the plow to run to clear the road around Kingman. I was so unprepared. I didn’t even have chains or recovery boards or anything other than my SUV is AWD thankfully. By some miracle, I made it to the Hilton Garden Inn in Flaggstaff and they were awesome. I didn’t have any heat to sleep in my rig. I can handle low 40’s, but when it is below freezing I just can’t. I’m glad that you made it through that storm. The snow is pretty, though.

    good content. just a thought, when you set up for camp at night.. you could back into the space, so it's just a straight drive out of your spot. the area that you were in gets pretty crazy with snow blizzard conditions, so it was a good choice to hang out and then go back down to lower elevation. safe travel my friend.

    If you ever come thru Route 66 - Springfield, IL the Cozy Dog Drive in created the corn dog and was inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel in the movie cars. Would love to see you come thru and make corn dogs in the van

    I always look for branches to put in front of my tires to drive over and get me going if necessary. I thought the SW was for snow birds in the winter. Not this year! 👍🏻🇺🇸🥩

    Somehow the way you delivery “documentary” level information on places is really great. I’m from Europe, hoping one day you’ll cross Europe with this level of background information on sites 😊

    I lived in Lake Havasu for 10 years, Flagstaff for 10 years, and Bullhead for over 15 years. I've never cruised Route 66, but I guess I've been on it many times. I enjoy your videos, it's a great escape from the election hell. Thanks 🌻

    I traveled Rt 66 briefly when driving on 40 towards Arizona got detoured to flagstaff due to a train derailment. This was 1987 we were otw to California drove from GA. My husband was stationed at Ft Ord in Monterey California and had driven one car months earlier while I finished up my quarter in college. So 2 19 yro cousins drove from GA to California 😂 we had a blast. Stopped everywhere from a Navajo reservation to stopping in the Mojave running into the desert just because. 😅

    What a great lesson for everyone that is traveling in the winter. BE PREPARED. Always keep snow chains in your car van truck even if it's July. Cause winter will sneak up on you quickly and there's a emergency you have to go to ...and it's Oh crap I forgot snow chains I've been meaning to get them. Now I'm stuck in snow. Headlines read...11 dead in winter snow storm

    Ryan…You probably already heard this, but in the case that you can’t find chains and traction boards, get yourself a couple of two by fours and some kitty litter…and make sure that you have a shovel all the time with you. It would’ve saved you a lot of headache that day. Take care and safe journeys my friend.

    Refried beans, rice, and hot sauce are good eating for me
    Good camping breakfast sandwich for you to try cook everything as you did with the egg, cheese, and bacon but toast a hamburger bun if you don,t have an oven you can make in a skillet and for a sauce sing you like mayo add some hot sauce to the mayo. yummmmy plus on a cold winter morning, it really hits the spot with the hot sauce

    Why don’t you get a thick plush rug for your van. Seems it would add an extra layer between the hard bottom and add warmth. Cheap, easy and throw it out if it’s too dirty.

    One tip for your floor is you could get a decent thick rug that you can store in the back when you don't need it - help with the cold feet
