The larger ticks on top are 5 seconds, the smaller ones underneath are 2.5 seconds and they relate to shell travel time, the number and stop watch icon to the left of the aiming reticle is the time it will take your shells to reach the intended aiming spot, so at the begining where the chapayev gets dev struck you can see the shells will take 7.92s to travel the distance to the ship and he is setting the aim spot at the fourth tick on the guage wich is around 10 seconds, the guage works very similiar to MIL dots on sniper scopes if your familiar with that aiming system. The guage does NOT however take in to account the various speed differences of the different ship classes, i believe it is set to a standard of 20 knots, wich is why the lead is at 10 seconds not 7.5 as the chapayev is traveling faster than 20 knots most likely and requires a longer lead time, auto aim gets you pretty close with ship speeds though, but you can double check pretty quickly to see how close it is once you get used to useing the guage. Ships angled into you or away from you also change the lead time, but auto aim also corrects for this aswell.
Technically the ticks relate to distance off centre. Those ticks can be equated to time once you choose the constant speed - as you say 20kt. Faster or slower enemy ships require adjustment, as you say.
I don’t think it being “The pro players” not wanting people to learn this, it’s more the fact that wargaming has no interest in teaching the player base of such an important mechanic 😂😂😂
Been doin' this, just didn't really know I was if that makes sense. You boiled down. I think I can improve what I do with it now. Once again, nicely done.
I'll have to try and pay more attention to this I usually just use auto aim and adjust never payed attention to the ticks so much thx for the info I try it and see what happens
Wow, that’s a cool trick, I myself mostly rely on my eye experience and also the direction of the smoke coming out of wind pipes, but thanks anyway for the tip Best of luck to you Peek !
The default lock on will usually land the shells a bit behind.....knowing that, just walk the guns forward 2 or 3 bumps of the stick and you should be good to go. leading DDs however might take 3 to 4 bumps of the stick.
Try hanks for explaining this! I never knew those hash marks moved 😮! I used them like you touched on at the beginning- more of a measuring tool. But had to adjust for speed of each ship. Thanks for the info, my man!
Very cool, iv sorta always been using this system as my eyesights a bit dodgy when I'm firing long range so the markers are my guide, although sometimes it's simply guess work. Now I know it's what I should be doing I'll pay more attention in the future. Thanks 👍
Ok so I'm getting better at aiming and shooting following your tips. I still run hot and cold though, so a work in progress. thanks for that. My question is about firing over islands and tracking targets. I get that some shots won't work because of obstacle height, but what is the best method for this please and thanks.
Yes… But… How do you fire the guns while they are still traversing? (Ie. Another battle ship and I were broadside and I wanted to shoot the main guns. But I couldn’t because they were constantly tracking short range and I die.)
Just playing the game for 3 years I tend to intuite the shots more than think about tick marks and shell time. Most shots are "autoaim plus more lead, slightly higher than water line" (because autoaim seldom puts enough lead and shell tracking tend to put more shell short than long at any range). Destroyers at full speed get the whole bar of lead or more, cruisers the whole bar minus one or two ticks, battleships about 2/3rd of a bar. All of this is, of course, assuming they're sailing in a straight line at or accelerating to full speed which, lets face it, happens a lot in this game. Ships that actually turn things get more challenging. Esp turning away as the game seems to do some funky stuff sometimes with aiming/shells not landing where they're aimed.
@@letumpeek Yes, as I explained in other comment, this is basically what I just worked out through experience, basically repeatedly snap aiming to see if autoaim is giving more and more lead either forward or reverse to get a sense that "hey, he's speeding up forward or reverse" and adjusting from there (you can also tell by the smoke and water over the bow/stern). It's another thing the game doesn't tell you about.
To any new players watching.. It’s probably best for most to to quick auto aim with reticle to get rough idea then adjust by instinct and learn by repetition .. it simply takes too long to calculate correct aim point using the “length of measurement tool “ and your best firing opportunity is gone . This is mostly because the distance from is never constant
Can you do a video about smoke and firing penalties. I’ve been playing for two years now and didn’t know you can shoot from behind smoke and don’t have to be in it to avoid detection. Thank you for all the tips
Nice video bro, and the big tics each one represent 5 secs, BBx1 secs, CCx2 and Ddsx3 secs, if reticle says 5 secs to get a full speed de put the mark around 15, 3 big ticks, is confusing until you do it instantly 🎉🎉
I think you made it sound more complicated than it is. You're using the auto aim to judge speed, I think most of us do that naturally. The most obvious extension of this is when a ship stops dead and the reticle locks onto the center of their ship. When you see the reticle rest on the center of their ship its obvious they aren't moving and your game sense should be telling you its citadel city time. I don't think this is a big secret, it's fairly obvious that as a ship gets fast the auto aim is going to lead them more. You don't need to look at ticks, you can just see the reticle lead changing.
Yeah, I usually just repeatedly use the snap aim (along with paying attention to his smoke stacks and water over the bow/stern) to get a sense if someone is speeding up or slowing down and just put more lead and slightly more elevation into than autoaim suggests and I usually get hits or, when rng says "no", splashes on both sides of the target. In a game so mired in rng I'm sure what else you can do. It it kind of important where you aim but even if you do everything right rng can just say "naw" and it doesn't matter how good you are at aiming. The whole gaming is a slot machine, you can only do your best to minimize the rng rolls.
@@177SCmaro yeah it's quirky but intuitive. I've heard people say it seems to target the rear of the citadel when they're moving but I think its just dead center, which is why unadjusted shots hit the back of the ship. The only other thing to watch out for is that elevation seems to be unpredictable, not sure if it's a bug or a feature but it will often aim high or low, while laterally it is always consistent. I feel like they're randomising the vertical assist a bit to deter laziness. Either way it's a fairly easy to master system that makes the dirty work of aiming trivial and I think that's a good thing. Realistic artillery is a math heavy ball ache and people have trouble focusing on strategy and positioning as it is without even more workload in an arcade game.
@@BlueZirnitra True. It could also be that auto aim doesn't take shell velocity into account and that varies by ship and distance, or it can be some combination of these things. Who knows? It's not like WG has a particularly good reputation when it comes to even basic game mechanics and coding. I do agree that aiming should be relatively simple and intuitive but not overly automated aim/boty in a navel arcade shooter, especially with this player base. My main issue isn't even with aiming but with rng deciding things too much. A player who is better at aiming can still be beaten by rng for the benefit of a worse player and I hate that about this game.
