I want to give you a really good hint. My mom owned a bakery , and she told me to use powder sugar not flour when you are cutting out cookies. They won't be dry if you do it that way. Even roll them out with powder sugar. They come out really good😊

This time of year the youth at our church would rake leaves, wrap pipes or any other work that needed to be done for the seniors in our church. Notice I said would….my youth are grown men who are married with children now!😢😢😢And I’m an empty nester! I really miss cooking daily for my family! I’ve always enjoyed showing love to them in that way. I still can just not every day. I miss a busy household!

Fun to watch, thanks! I place the dough onto a large piece of parchment paper and then place a large piece of plastic wrap on top of dough. Then, roll out dough without using any flour or powdered sugar. The plastic wrap lets the rolling pan roll out dough without sticking. When all rolled out, lift off and remove the plastic wrap. Then use cookie cutters. Lift and kind of slightly roll the parchment paper up towards you in sections to lay the cookie dough cutout into your hand. Bake as usual. Happy frosting!❤
During one of the pottery classes I attended, we all made cookie jars. They were all Press Molds, and we pressed the clay in varying shapes into the sides of bowls. Mine turned out great with one exception: I wanted my cookie jar larger. The instructor said I could make another one as long as I kept up with the other assignments. I did. So, I went to Walmart and bought 2 of the largest stainless steel bowls I could find the same shape. I used a smaller bowl for the base. I used Christmas cookie cutters to cut out all of the clay. Each row was one shape. One bowl, the cuts were all right side up. The other bowl, the cuts were up side down. That way, when I flipped the bowl, all the shapes would be right side up. The cookie jar came out of the kiln without breaking (all glazed and complete). Now, I had a very large cookie jar that weighed about 30 pounds. It could not be placed on a counter; it was not safe if it fell. So much for that. Don't forget the Sprinkles.
It just wouldn't be Christmas without at least a few decorated cookies, amongst all of the other powdered or plain cookies. Thank you Melissa and Tom for sharing this with us.
A women’s group at my church bakes mini loaves of bread, one Saturday a month. We then deliver them to the homebound people of our church. In December, we change up and have a cookie exchange. We each bring three dozen cookies and then come home with three dozen assorted cookies. We share the recipes. It’s a great idea to take the last dozen to the home bound, Melissa!!!!❤️

I've had to use a food pantry, & had meals delivered to me (I stopped that because I'm a picky eater & I was wasting too much food & it didn’t seem right when it could've gone to people who would eat it), & I know homemade cookies will be very much appreciated! ❤
I recognize the Rich Roll Cookies recipe from The Joy of Cooking.. My first Cookbook. I'm 78 now and have never used any other recipe for cut-out cookies. They're wonderful. No need to look any further. The only difference is, she says to refrigerate for 3-4 hours. Refrigerators are probably more efficient now. Instead of Royal Icing, I use a glaze made with powdered sugar and heavy cream. Just enough for sugars and sprinkles to stick.At my age, I don't need any more cookie cutters, but I'll look at them anyway. Thanks.

@ I would be happy to share my variations of the recipe but first you need to look up on Google how to start it , feed it, and bake it. I keep mine in a gallon baggie. I start mine on a Friday so 10 days later I can bake on a Sunday. Please, if you still want to try making it I’ll be happy to share. It’s absolutely delicious.
Variations Lemon- use 1 big or 2 small boxes of jello lemon pudding. I candy real lemons (recipe found on Google) dice them up into medium pieces and add them along with 1/2 c of the juice that comes from the candied lemons.I use 2 lemons for two loaves of bread. This may be my favorite. Chocolate- use 1 big box of chocolate jello instant pudding. 6 ounces chocolate chips and I add 1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper. That’s optional but tasty & 1c of walnuts. Add 1/4 extra cup of milk to the chocolate batter. Butterscotch- use 1 lg or 2 am butterscotch instant pudding and 6 oz butterscotch chips. Pistachio- use pistachio pudding mix & 1 c chopped pistachios. Vanilla with Pineapple- use vanilla pudding with 2-6 ounce bags of sweetened dried pineapple, chopped into 2 pieces. This alone or you can add walnuts and coconut or just the pineapple alone is delicious. If you add coconut add 1/4 c extra milk. ****This is my first or 2nd favorite and that’s with just pineapple. Neck and neck with the lemon. Chocolate- just as above but add 1/4 c Jack Daniels whiskey. Best chocolate amish bread ever and I can’t stand whiskey. Vanilla- add vanilla pudding mix and dried cranberries or a mix of cranberries and cherries. Up to 2 cups of dried fruits and nuts mixed. I hope that helps you and if you make it please let me know. Note: please know that one batch of amish bread starter will give you 8 loaves of amish bread. ****Always use Baker’s Joy Spray for your loaf pans. God bless you! 🙏🏻

The cookies look great, Tom. I may try them at some point, but I am hesitant to try a different sugar cookie than the one our famhas used for 3 generations. My Mother purchased a Betty Crocker cookbook in 1952 (the year I was born). It has a soft sugar cookie recipe in it that she has used ever since. Although royal icing designs are pretty, we prefer the taste of buttercream & always frosted / decorated our cookies with crusting buttercream. Precious memories of thousands of cookies baked with family through the years.

These are way too sweet for me, but I know lots of folks like to make them and decorate them, especially with kids. I've done it myself in the past. These days I tend to prefer a cookie with texture (oatmeal, nuts, coconut, etc.), and I prefer buttery over sweet. I do know, however, that lots of folks are going to appreciate you for guiding them through this process, and I hope Melissa really enjoys the cookie exchange. Never been to a cookie exchange, but as an avid cookie lover, I know that's something I'd love.

The cookies look great, Tom. I may try them at some point, but I am hesitant to try a different sugar cookie than the one our famhas used for 3 generations.
My Mother purchased a Betty Crocker cookbook in 1952 (the year I was born). It has a soft sugar cookie recipe in it that she has used ever since. Although royal icing designs are pretty, we prefer the taste of buttercream & always frosted / decorated our cookies with crusting buttercream. Precious memories of thousands of cookies baked with family through the years.
I am the same way. My step granddaughter (44 years old) told me she just loves the sugar cookies with buttercream icing. I too was born in 1952.😊❤

In the past I have hand cut each St. Nicholas Cookie according to a pattern in a cute little book about him. They turned out beautiful, but Oh!, a Cookie Cutter would have been a lot easier!! My Mom made a variety of goodies at Christmas time but was my mil that did the "sugar " cookies frosted & decorated . I made them when my hubby was still living we both were big "cookie monsters" ESP at Christmas. Love Love Love ya'll content

Great recipe!! I turned on my gas oven today as I was about to put in two pecans pies… uggh nothing!! . Good thing my husband can fix anything, he ordered the part . Not a great time for the oven to quit! Merry Christmas 🎄

Hi, Tom & Melissa! I have everything in the house for this recipe except patience :) I spend a lot of time cooking and baking and have made many thousands of cookies over 5+ decades. These are way too sweet for me, but I know lots of folks like to make them and decorate them, especially with kids. I've done it myself in the past. These days I tend to prefer a cookie with texture (oatmeal, nuts, coconut, etc.), and I prefer buttery over sweet. I do know, however, that lots of folks are going to appreciate you for guiding them through this process, and I hope Melissa really enjoys the cookie exchange. Never been to a cookie exchange, but as an avid cookie lover, I know that's something I'd love.
