  • The Ray family learned their three boys had contracted HIV from blood transfusions and were diagnosed with AIDS. At the time, little was known about the disease, other than it was fatal. FOX 13’s Kelly Ring interviewed the family after they were thrust into the national spotlight and spoke with them again, nearly 40 years later. More: www.fox13news.com/news/the-ra...

This story is from the late 80's/early 90's. Ricky died at 15 in 1992, Robert at 22 in 2000. Randy went on to have a wife, a child and grandchildren. He died last month at 43. Their little sister who did not have hemophilia or HIV/AIDS is a nurse. They put up with a lot of prejudice, violence, (their house was set on fire) hate and ignorance. Their parents are amazingly kind and forgiving. RIP Ricky, Robert and Randy.

Remember Ryan White, the young boy who was infected by a transfusion. He was bullied so bad they had to move out of their state. In the name of RYAN WHITE, many programs exists to help people manage their illness. HIV/AIDS is not a death sentence. We know more now. A related story to that: back in 1990, the song Club at the End of the Street was popular and MTV wanted a video for it, but Elton John was unable to do so because he was with Ryan White in his final days (Ryan White passed away that April). As such, an animated video ended up being made for that song.

I understand the stigma back then, but to really outright show how scared you are by bullying, setting their house on fire, killing the boy with insulting, harsh words….. they should’ve just stayed inside their homes if they were that afraid.
I wonder if these adults had a change of heart before some of them died. If they’ve outgrown their ignorance.

Whosoever that pastor was, that let his congregation, turn their backs on those kids, I hope he isn't still preaching. People were so quick to judge back then, without trying to learn about what's going on. I probably would have been scared at first also, not knowing what to say or do. But I'm not going to make the kids feel like everyone is scared to be around them. Then I know the parents that were scared, were making it worse for their kids. Probably saying some mean things about those boys to their kids. Kids are pure and full of love, until the adults corrupt them.

I can't imagine the pain and suffering and intolerance the Rays had to go through because of their son's illnesses, and now they have lost all 3 of them. The Rays seem like such a nice loving family who believe in equality and justice for everyone. However, I noticed from the 80s footage that the father had a few different Confederate Flag baseball caps and would wear them in public within being criticized. He also seems like a very kind man who would never have any of those hateful thoughts against certain groups of people. Did the Confederate Flag have a different meaning back in the 80s, or was it just as controversial as it is today? If anyone who grew up in or lived in the south in the 80s can tell me about it, please reply to my comment when you get a chance.
    God Bless the Ray Family.

They all contracted HIV in 1986. Screening for HIV was just beginning back then for HIV-1; it did not start for HIV-2 until 1992.. That's how Randy White got HIV, and also how Arthur Ashe contracted HIV...like the Ray boys, all through contaminated blood products.

    • @seanwebb605

@@AEMoreira81 CDC had recommended using a Hepatitis B test as a surrogate for the virus as early as 1984. Experts in blood banking warned against the risks of paid plasma donations and sourcing from at risk groups such as prisons. State Prison Blood systems continued to sell the contaminated blood and plasma products abroad after agreeing not to use them domestically. Hemophilia Association told patients to keep treating normally even when they knew of the increased risk of HIV and Hepatitis C transmission.
