    The fact that when Aang pretended to be a fire nation kid he found out that none of the people were allowed to dance and express themselves, yet as we see with the dragons the original form of fire bending was a dance. It's so cool to learn how the fire bending we've seen up until now is outright just a spin-off filled with the obsession with raw power and domination compared to the traditional which was to represent life and energy. Aang technically wasn't wrong when he called the fire bending he'd experienced and learned nothing but Destruction, because it's become the norm to use it that way.

      There is a deep unspoken connection between firebending and dance. Think off all the times Zuko is on the backfoot, since season 1 versus Zhao. He was never a prodigy, was always considered weak by firebending standards and his family's standards, his form wasn't perfect. So what does he do? He breakdances. This happens so many times throughout the series it's easy to overlook as standard, but it's specific to him and wins him many fights he would have otherwise lost.
      The power inside of him was never weak of heart, or else all the ninja stuff he does would never have worked, he would never have learned the sword when he realized his firebending was not up to snuff. Zuko endures, so why would he be so behind everyone else in firebending?
      With firebending, he was taught in the rigid restrictive way of rage. He didn't have that the beginning so he failed, and then when he was rageful it was not from his own personality but years of trauma and shame. It limits him, it keeps his sister beating him, it keeps him from drawing wisdom from other nations that would make him stronger. His power boosts when it's an honest form of self expression and not rage or overvaluing strength (easy example, Zuko Alone. He remembers his mother telling him to always remember who he is, and just as he's all but defeated he breakdances and changes the tide). Just think, from this episode on whenever Zuko fights he no longer grunts or makes those loud yelling noises he always did. He finally heeds his Uncle's teachings and allows his firebending to come from his breath, Iroh having learned this same lesson before Zuko was even alive. He controls his breath instead of grunting from strength exertion.

      His fighting style also becomes more defensive and reliant on counter-attacks. For example, when he fights Azula for the first time, he charges in without thinking, throwing attack after attack at her, which she evades and deflects. In every subsequent fight against her, Zuko waits for her to strike, blocks it, then uses the opening to strike back. That's just how an inexperienced martial artist fights vs how a well-trained one does.

    I always loved the "Judgement" scene.
    Iroh talked a lot about Balance of the Nations to Zuko. And in this scene, we get to see them all represented in the harmonious fire: Red for Fire, Blue for Water, Green for Earth, and Yellow for Air. Right before Zuko says "I understand."

    Book 3, Episode 12: So now that Zuko has joined, Team Avatar has a nice five-man band structure. Aang is the hero, Zuko is the lancer, Katara is the heart, Sokka is the smart guy, and Toph is the big guy.
    Book 3, Episode 13: So something kind of cool is that in book 3, episode 2, we meet a fire nation that has had 100 years of war propaganda engulf their culture to a point where only Aang remembers the _old_ fire nation. At the Fire Nation school, he teaches kids to express themselves through dance. And what do Aang and Zuko find in this episode when they are trying to fire the source of firebending? A dance! Another really cool detail is that after this episode, Zuko no longer grunts when he firebends. That’s because he is no longer fueling it with anger. Also, a cool detail is that Zuko is more than likely deaf in his left ear (fan speculation) so before he would sleep with his right ear up so he could hear but now that he is with the rest of Team Avatar, he sleeps with his left ear exposed because he trusts everyone and doesn’t have to worry about being “at the ready.” And we see it in the comics but Zuko can also bend the rainbow dragonfire. There is also a really great video by the channel Sideways about the Firebending theme and how it being the end theme parallels the main theme really well.

    11:15 fun fact since you mentioned it. There are comic books that came out after the series ended, and they take place either between episodes or after the end of the finale. And in one comic, Zuko and Sokka actually do duel with swords while they are here. Turns out, that Piandao (Sokka's master) also trained Zuko, which is why Zuko is so skilled with swords. He might have been even better, but since firebending is considered the true form of power, it is looked down upon if you don't have good firebending, so Zuko tried to focus more on his firebending than his swordmanship

  • @kingkeesietv
    @kingkeesietv 8 місяців тому +10

    When you really think about it, Zuko is a mix of all the main characters. His and Katara’s mothers died because of the fire nation, his family doesn’t accept him for who he is just like Toph, he’s bad with social interactions just like Sokka, and his destiny has been tied to the fate of this world since his childhood, just like Aang. He’s basically dealing with everything they’ve all individually had to deal with, that’s why from the beginning of book 1 it’s hard not to wish for Zuko to be a part of Aang’s team.. because it’s obvious that him being with them is exactly what Zuko needed to heal.

    Firebending masters also Completely Recontextualizes the season 1 episode ‘the deserter’. Jong Jong is a master, but he considers the art if his mastery a terrible curse of destruction to the point he wishes he wasn’t a bender at all, and is obsessed with how to keep it under control. But in ‘the firebending masters’ we learn *fire is life, not just destruction* revealing to us that while jong jong is considered a master by his peers, he actually isn’t because he, like most of the entire Fire nation, doesn’t understand this first tennant of firebending anymore.
    In a feat of incredible writing this is actually freaking FORESHADOWED by the stage performance at the festival . Likely renacting a folk story dating back to before the war, the performer creates a dragon out of fire wich has ‘captured a princess’ Then he tries to rope it, but the rope is almost breaking and the dragon flies at the captive. We don’t know what’s supposed to happen next, because aang interrupts, but the performance ends with the fire bursting into multicolored confetti. I think this is not a coincidence at all. The performer is the only firebending we see in the episode not concerned with fighting, and what is it being used for? Entertainment, life, and expression. However, when it seems the bending is becoming out of control and will be harmful, the performance is stopped entirely out of caution, and we aren’t able to see the ‘true meaning of firebending’ recreation in the multicolored confeti that was clearly planned to be the finale.
    Im going to go into theory territory here and say the important part of the folk story of the performance was the rope breaking, as a symbol of restraint. Id love to hear more theorizing on how but Ive sat here typing for way too long already.

      Since they’re likley already done I feel I can write more in a repl comment with a spoiler warning
      I think it’s interesting that this is the episode ‘the firebending masters’ rather than jong jong’s episode being named that. Because he’s also in the order, along with the masters in episodes named ‘sokkas master’ and ‘the water bending master’ so theres clearly a theme, albeit an incomplete one. Other than ‘the old masters’ this is the only episode without in the name scheme that doesn’t center around one of the humans in the order. At any glance after watching the episode it referrs to ran and chaw, but taking the lotus scheme into account you realize it likley refers to iroh as well.
      That means the only member without a ‘masters’ episode all to themselves is bumi. I think the old masters episode tries to make up for that

    I adore how they went ancient native style of tribe. It fits so well. Zuko introducing himself and trying to connect with the group shows how even though he is royal he doesn't have social skills due to it. In a way same as his sister. Having to heal and grow as a person is rough. Now comes the next few episodes that are amazing for the group!

    One of my favorite things I noticed on a second watch is at the beginning when Iroh is teaching Zuko about fire bending on the boat you can tell his fire is different than the fire that Zuko and his sparring partner. Its swirls more, much like the fire Zuko and Aang use right after encountering the dragons.

    • @phoenixking9457
      @phoenixking9457 6 місяців тому

      That's not a detail.... Iroh wasn't shooting the fire at someone so of course its going to swirl

    • @CyberTyger83
      @CyberTyger83 6 місяців тому +1

      @@phoenixking9457 it is a detail. The fire doesn't look any different just because they're firing it at a person vs not at a person. His fire looks the same all through the series and it looks different than all the other firebenders because of where he draws his power for the fire. Most firebenders draw from anger and aggression and he does not. His firebending is the firebending of the Sun Warriors, not of the Fire Nation

    dragons are the original firebenders, badger moles are the original earthbenders, sky bison are the original air benders, and i think koi fish* are the original water benders! *waterbenders learned how to bend by watching how the moon pushed & pulled the ocean, but we also know that the moon and ocean spirits have been in koi fish form for a longer than humans can remember, so it makes you wonder if the other original animals were also inhabited by spirits and passed the knowledge on to the animals who then taught the humans

    One of my favorites episodes in book 3 is the headband(episode 2, footloose), but we don’t learn the full significance of the schools not allowing dance or self expression until this episode: ‘the firebending masters’. Here we learn that fire is life, the the original way of channeling bending was not by rage, but by pleasure, entertainment; self expression. So when Aang gives those kids that party he’s helping the next generation of firebenders move away from rage and conquest.

    Keep in mind that a lot of complaints about the fandom's reactions to heavy plot points in the show are from the mid 2000s, when majority of the fandom were pre-teens and teenagers. Likeability and emotional attachment drove a lot of the fandom's opinions and analyses of certain characters. Most fans nowadays understand the complexities of these situations, but the damage has already been done 😅
