In an interview the voice actress for Azula , the ever talented Grey De Lisle, said that for that breakdown scene she had to pull from some very traumatic memories and very deep pain and just allow her self to just let go and just fully feel it to get that take. To this day she has a hard time rewatching the scene because of it, That is a freaking artist right there lol She did not have to go that hard but she did, and I think thats what sets this show apart from others of its time, every single person who worked on this show gave 110% to it because they loved the story and knew how important it was to get it told and have its message resonate.
As a kid I got traumatized by Azula's mental breakdown. The way Azula wailed, screamed and cried just felt so wrong to me.
And idk if y'all have ever had a mental breakdown but damn those screams and cries are so accurate. There is something so deep about the hurt that it sounds like it's clawing it's way out.
Would you mind letting me know which interview? I know she's said that she got emotional doing the breakdown scene, but I've never seen her say she has a hard time watching it. I'm pretty sure she just said she, like Dante Basco (Zuko), hasn't seen it because she was busy (as of 2016ish).

You can't help but feel pity for Azula during that scene. As horrible as she was, and the things she did, she's still a child and her father ruined her. That break down was hard to watch and even Zuko and Katara had to look away. It's not a triumph over Azula but a sad and depressing reality that she was alone and lost everyone close to her by pushing them away.
Fun fact: Not counting the intro, if you take the first word from the first episode (Sokka saying "it's") and the last word of the finale (Toph saying "perfect"), you get the perfect summary of the series; It's Perfect!

Same with Legend of Korra!!! Asami's last line is: "I've always wanted to see what the spirit wolrd's like." To what Korra responds: "Sounds perfect." So both series start and end with "It's perfect" :)
@@insomniacneedssleep3240 Well, not exactly. The first line of Korra is "The White Lotus has honored my family by coming." So Korra's first and last word doesn't line up to "It's perfect" like ATLA does.

And that’s all she wrote. This is one of the best series finales ever. I love the way first episode is titled “The Boy in the Iceberg” and the last is titled “Avatar Aang.” It really nicely bookends the show. I love that the first and last word of dialogue say “its perfect.” And I love the way they resolved the issue of killing Ozai. I love that the tigerdillo roar comes back. First Aang does it in part 1, then Ozai does it, then Avatar state Aang does it. The question of Zuko’s mother Ursa is answered in the comic The Search, which I highly recommend. Katara and Aang hugging before they kiss is really important because it signifies that they were friends first and that this isn't just the hero getting the girl.

Yeah, double deus ex machina is the best way to end a series and definitely not lazy.
Also, it is Katara who starts the kiss at the end, calling back when Aang advanced on her at the play and she shut him down. Aang understood that she needed to be ready for it and he respectfully waited for it no matter how long it would take (if even would at all). Only after she made the first move he hugged her and kissed her back
Zuko’s reunion with Iroh is probably the most wholesome moment of the show. No matter how many times I watch that scene, the feels get to me.

The fact that Aang didnt stoop to their level and that he stayed true to his values and stood strong is so inspirational to me even just from a cartoon.
It's so important! I think it would've cheapened the show and his character had he resorted to killing Ozai despite his own convictions.

25:34 Remember, Sokka’s physical body was also taken into the spirit world with the panda spirit Hei Bai. When Aang calmed Hei Bai down, sokka and many others came out of the bamboo
Also Hei Bai is a spirit that came to the physical world so it's possible Koh came to the physical world because the Avatar wasn't maintaining the balance.

After Zuko learned different fire bending from the dragons he's calmer and can actually fight Azula. Azula is starting to slip though. Worst part is at her worst she's still nasty soldier. But her crazy is helping close the gap well.
the gap kinda reopens in the comics, the dragons taught him an alternative style but i feel like too many fans think it’s definitively better, azula has beaten zuko in the comics twice
@@vetabeta9890 Azula is also straight up one of the most talented and prodigious fire benders ever, so I think Zuko does have the "proper" firebending technique which makes him stronger than what he was, but he's still not as naturally talented and gifted as Azula is
@@victorpopescu8073 I think the point is that while Azula is more powerful because she was born gifted, Zuko had to overcome his limitations via self-discipline, and that made him a better person overall, remember his ultimate technique was redirecting lightning instead of creating it, a defensive move instead of sheer destruction
As a note to the discussion about the Katara-Zuko shipping, the writers' were definitely aware and playing around with it a bit, but keep in mind specifically with June, back in season 1, she assumed Zuko was chasing his gf when he asked for her services using Katara's necklace. So it was a callback.

47:18 Iroh's lesson from season one is still true. Even with everything Zuko's learned since then, firebending basics are still his greatest weapon. He got the upper hand on Azula the same way he did in his duel with Zhao: by breaking her root.

and to add onto that throughout the fight zuko uses earthbending forms and barely moves, firebending is usually more dynamic and acrobatic but zuko barely moves from his starting position
Azula maybe insane but she's still literally the best firebender of their generation, a true prodigy. Even batshit insane she was able to perform firebending feats no one else could, like compressing lightning into ball lightning.
Yeah, azula is the greatest living bender, beaten only by Avatar-mode Aang. Katara and Toph are close competition though

She is more in tune with her element and the balance of the world than anyone else in history, and is stronger than many Avatars even in their Avatar State, only surpassed by later Avatars like Kyoshi, Roku, and Aang, and only then when in their Avatar States.
I would argue Iroh was the besst fire bender of the show and is the only fire bender to incorporate other bendong cultures into his teachings. I mean he litterly found a way to counter lightning studying water tribes and nothing azula did ever came close to that. Also not to forget that he learned the true fire bending from the the original source and all to have done that are master benders of their elements. Toph is the perfect example. Iroh is without a doubt more impressive than Azula to me, but she is still a prodigy.

I love the difference in how Ozai and Iroh deal with "when Zuko messes things up".
Ozai: Zuko spoke out of turn. Burn his face and banish him from the nation.
Iroh: Zuko betrayed him and got him arrested. Forgive him with unconditional love.
Fun fact: The man wasn't taking any prisoners because of hama and her blood bending. After she escaped with blood bending they never took prisoners ever again.

While I do think aang vs ozai was amazing, Azula vs Zuko is my favourite animated fight of all time. The buildup was perfect and they animated the final agni kai beautifully. Not many shows can retain their greatness throughout but avatar managed to do just that. From the well written characters and story, beautiful OSTs and animation not to mention the amazing voice acting. This show is easily my favourite.
A little detal: ty lee was afraid to "be a part of matching set" and stand out

With her family, she was never given a choice. With the warriors, she has the choice. Plus being matched isn't all the time, all day every day. She can still be herself.

I love how at 47:18 Zuko gets Azula in the same exact way he gets Admiral Zhao during their Agni Kai. Break her root!
Shows he did listen to Iroh
His style during the whole fight incorporates all the elements. He stays very firm and blocks Azula's attacks directly like an earth bender. That downward chop is very reminiscent of Aangs downward strike he would do with his staff and uses it to split Azula's attack and redirect it. All his break dance moves are also very air bender esque. And we all know about lightning redirecting and water bending. He learned to pull from all the elements just like Iroh said he could.
There’s no way it’s already over! 😭 Everytime people finish Avatar, they get a similar response from every fan: “Thank you for watching what is rightfully cited as the best Western animated story in history.” It’s no exaggeration when people consider Avatar the epitome of Western animated storytelling, next to some of the earliest pioneers like Gravity Falls and Adventure Time.
I know you guys have been watching Korra already (I just heard that you guys are already on Book 4), which I’m very glad for. I defend Korra, both the show and the character, a lot (even though I’m not completely in denial of their shortcomings), but I’ll say you guys are very satisfied with the large majority of the show. (Also, the comics that for the show can be found online, but you'll see what happened to Azula)
What do you mean by Gravity Falls and Adventure Time being earliest pioneers? AT didn’t come out until almost 3 years after ATLA concluded, and GF 2 years after that.
What I always loved is that Zuko used every bending style in his agni kai. At 47:20 he uses an airbending move, the redirection (if azula wasn't a little btch) would've been water 47:30 and another move which you didn't include in this video but was a bit before the 'airbending' move was him using the wide stance with both arms spread to protect from azula's incoming fire, which was earth. At the end zuko learned from everyone in the gAang and I love that
It's been a decade and I'm just realising that why Zuko was glaring at Yon Ra at the end. He was offering his mother up to die in his place. Both Katara and Zuko's moms volunteered to die/be banished in order to save their children. This cartoon is so deep.

This is hands down one of the best storytelling animation of my lifetime. It is a timeless tale of humanity at it's best and worst. I am happy you all loved it as much as I, and I enjoyed going through this journey again with you guys as well.
It took until now for me to realise what it meant when Aang was nearly corrupted. To bend Ozai's energy, he needed his own spirit and energy to be incorruptable. Throughout this whole ordeal, he always looked back to his own spirituality when everyone was telling him to compromise. With all the power in the world, he could have taken the easy out and even argued that due to possession he didn't necessarily break his vows. Instead, he was willing to let himself be corrupted by Ozai and find the alternative solution. By sticking to who he is. He will never take a life. He will not kill. His spirit, in those last moments, was completely incorruptable.
17:30 Zutara vs Kataang was pretty much the ORIGINAL ship war. There had been ship wars before, of course, but this one was massive and set the stage for all future shipping discourse.
It's a ship war that still goes on to this day.

frr i get it's a reaction, i apreciate them commenting and saying what they think because that's literally the point of a reaction video, but oh god they couldn't even shut up on the important, serious parts for 2 seconds and ended up ruining the mood of the scene or straight up missing some parts because of it!! so frustrating lol
Just wanted to point out that Aang already unblocked his chakra in Season 2 Finale. Katara was no longer blocking his chakra, as he was prepared to let her go, and so he was able to go into the Avatar State. That is when Azula shot him down, which disconnected him from the Avatar Cycle, since he technically died. That is why he wasn't able to get into the avatar state all of season 3.
The Graphic novels are really good and worth reading. You have to read in order The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South, Imbalance, Katara and the Pirate Silver. There are a few others that are a bit out of chronological order but I would really recommend reading Suki Alone as it is about her after getting captured in the show up til Sokka saves her.. Also there is another one coming out soon about June and Iroh that looks really interesting.
There’s also Azula in the Spirit Temple, it offers a possible redemption for her!
While most of the stuff with Zuko and Katara is poking fun at shippers, then teaming up in the end isn’t. Because of their arcs it was obvious Zuko and Azula had to fight, but it was more important to the writers that Katara and Azula end up being the final battle. Because, much like Zuko is for Aang, Azula was written for the sole purpose of being Katara’s foil. Her equal and opposite. This fight was literally what she was made for.
The last Agni Kai is my favorite scene in the entire series. Everything about it from the music to the duality of the colors is perfect.
About the Spirit World and Koh: Remember that in earlier episodes we saw that spirits can go to the mortal world, like the painted lady, who showed up at the end of the episode to thank Katara, the Sun and Moon spirits who moved in permanently and took the forms of fishes, and that Panda Spirit who was wreaking havoc on that village. so it's perfectly possible that Koh crossed over and took the Avatar's lover's face
The best non-Anime anime I've seen and a great part of my childhood. It was great to rewatch it with you lads :) Glad y'all liked it too
This is it. The finale to a great show. Time to do one final analysis. Azula is honestly one of my favorites from Avatar. Her father teaches her that trust is a weakness. That love is for fools. Because he doesn't love his own family. He plots against his brother in his time of emotional grief, he plays a part in his father's death(implied), scars his own child, and then separates Azula from her mother by teaching her how to do things his way. Azula then goes to keep everyone at arms length. Except for Mai and Ty Lee. And even with them, she still employs some of the manipulation techniques that her father told her worked so well. After all, he's the Firelord. One of the most powerful and influential people alive. He is living proof that using people gets you what you want. That it makes you truly happy.
So she does that. She tells herself that, "almost isn't good enough" whenever she slips up even a little bit. Everything has to be perfect. Because when his children are less than perfect, they get treated like Zuko. But Ozai could never treat Azula like Zuko. He obviously has trust in her. She takes down most of team Avatar, she nearly drills into Ba Sing Se, she almost takes out her uncle(a powerful thorn in the side of anyone he goes against), she infiltrated the impenetrable city and brought it down from the inside. "You were never even a player." She brought down the Avatar and had it not been for spiritual water, would've ended the cycle there and then.
She has a small slip of emotion when talking about how her mother treated her and gives a small glimpse at her insecurities but quickly brushes it aside. She holds off Team Avatar even when she doesn't have her bending. Then it all falls apart during the boiling rock. Mai loves Zuko more than he fears her. But that's impossible. Ozai said fear was the only rational way. Then Ty Lee betrays her as well. An even further impossibility. It can't be happening. Then Ozai looks at all of the hard work she's done and casts her aside. He gives her a position and then immediately makes an even better one for himself and leaves her at home. After everything she's done, he treats her like Zuko. Azula then begins to panic. Because fear isn't working. Everyone is either leaving or she makes them leave because she's starting to fear that they'll inevitably betray her. To the point where she has to imagine her mother telling her that she LOVES her. Azula smashes the mirror as she realizes that her father left her with nothing. And it all culminates in that final battle.
Where she makes mistakes that she would never have made. Slips up. And has a breakdown. Because she was supposed to have everything. She had fear. Zuko was supposed to have nothing. He had weakness. He had love. So why were the roles reversed? Why did her father abandon her? Why did her friends leave? All of that on the shoulders of a 14 year old girl. And it broke her. And that makes Azula's story so tragic to me.

Why didn’t Azula just try to gravitate more towards her mother Ursa (like Zuko) instead of looking for her horrible father Ozzai’s approval? Was there anyway that Ursa could’ve prevented Ozzai from influencing Azula, or was it impossible?
@@jmwilliamsart We see from several instances (Azula manipulating Ursa to make Zuko play with her and then dumping him into the fountain; Zuko's demonstration of "How Azula feeds the turtleducks"; how she was already showing off for Firelord Azulon) that she was already cruel and manipulative. If folks understood some of the signs of mental illness as such, it's possible that she could have been helped, but even a child needs to be *willing* to participate in their own therapy; it can't effectively be imposed. And then Ursa poisoned Firelord Azulon to protect Zuko and was banished by new Firelord Ozai. It seems that it was impossible.
“Your own spirit must be unbendable.” Aang’s refusal to kill is what allowed his spirit to conquer Ozai’s.
Just imagine, I was 13 years old watching this finale when it aired, and I didn't realize how much of a gem it was until I rewatched the show as an adult.
The 2nd episode of the eclipse hinted at us how powerful Ozai actually is. Ozai was the first person to feel his fire bending had returned before his daughter & he went straight into lightning bending without any effort.

He's actively feeling for the slightest change. Azula is not, and waiting for daddy dearest to give the signal fire bending is good to go again.

Imagine the elation of being a firebender and realizing your birthday is on the day of Sozin’s comet, the most important day in Firenation history, and for your birthday your present is to be dumped into the ocean to drown. (He definitely drowned, no one can tread water for long in full plate armor, it’s honestly amazing he made it back to the surface at all.)
He dumped the armor. If he can make it to the surface for a casual word with a buddy he can get out of the armor in time to not drown.

If you're confused about the word "Avatar" it is a Sanskrit word which the language for Hindu scriptures and it means a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth; an incarnate divine teacher. This show ATLA has many Hindu and Buddhist ideologies ingrained in it. And for James' movie Avatar he admitted that he was deeply inspired by Hindu mythology and drew parallels from the religion for his movie.
In Hinduism most of the avatars or Lord Vishnu (1 of the 3 superior Gods) are depicted as blue/black depicting the color of the universe i.e blue if there is light present and in general black.
Also remember when Guru Pathik who was depicted as a Hindu guru said that he has a close spiritual relation with the monks it was true because Hindus and Buddhists have very similar ideologies.
Even Sidharth who is famously known as Gautam Buddha was born to a Hindu king. Sidharth later found Buddhism.
Also idk if you'll read this long a** comment there are several Sanskrit words in the show like Agni kai, agni is sanskrit for fire. King bhumi, bhumi is Sanskrit for earth, avatar as I already told you what it means.
Ooo ooo I just remembered another thing. Like Christianity Hinduism also has several sects which are generally very closely knit but one, the one is a darkar side of Hinduism which consists of dark arts and stuff. In that we have a ritual which is based in 5 elements which to nobody's surprise are air, water, fire, earth and spirit. I grew up with this religion so it was extra special for me to watch all this and realise what the avatar was about in the bigger picture.
After experiencing this masterpiece, it's time for you guys to know what true pain is by watching Shyamalan's movie 🤣

I know you guys would've wanted azula to deserve a far worse punishment but you gotta remember, azula became this way because of her good for nothing father. Her father never treated her with actual love and care, all he did was raising her to be cruel and violent and only teaching her that violence and fear is the way to control people, even using it to control her friends and making them fear her. because of Ozai's treatment, she unfortunately never experienced love, all ozai ever did is that he only saw her just another tool for his stupid war. If azula had someone kind and wise like iroh, she would've slowly become a better person like zuko.
And sad fact, for azula's mental breakdown scene, her VA had to remember some very painful trauma from her past in order to let out that intense crying. Azula's breakdown is the scene that her VA refuses to watch till this very day.
Also if you wanna know what happened to azula after the series, you can watch some videos that talk about the sequel comics. It even reveals more about zuko and azula's mother.
Also i love the fact that ozai's downfall was technically his own fault. If it wasn't for him banishing zuko, zuko would've never had iroh by his side, and thus zuko would've never had his development and become the new firelord. That's what Ozai freaking gets for being a neglectful unloving parent 😂
It really is something that it takes to watch throughs to actually start to understand and sympathize with Azula
I agree, Azula is a tragic character (villain), it’s too bad that her mother Ursa wasn’t able to prevent Ozzai from influencing her to begin with. It’s a fitting punishment for Ozzai, now he has no fire bending, no power, and nobody to give a damn about him. He only cared about himself, and now himself is all that he will ever have. As Ursa said to him in the comics he’s just a small man trying desperately to be big, his heart was too small for anyone including himself.
For once, Netflix made a good decision, by splitting the last season in 16 episodes.
This is actually how the series originally aired. All the episodes Netflix combined were combined because that's how they originally aired. They were only split up in syndication.

Azula is one of the few kids show antagonists that i think writers set up really well with having emotional issues and backstories. Very often kids shows will have a one note issue happen in a villain's backstory and it doesn't measure up to the bad they're doing. Azula to me, is tragic (and capable of redemption but hasn't earned it obviously) because its a ling stretch of if you think a bit about her backstory it's both an "oh of course you're like this" and a "you need help, probably not from the main gang, but you need help).
Like, yes, i can absolutely see how this child who grew up only able to obtain conditional "love" from her genocidal father who prioritizes fear and control by upstaging her brother who has real actual unconditional love and support systems, and then the two people i consider actual friends but I also keep by instilling the same processes as my genocidal father, yeah im gonna be liie Azula.
I thinj the only kids show that comes to immediate mind (though im sure there are many more) that takes special care of their antagonists is maybe Centaurworld.

@@natalimoina no I watch a lot of children's shows (and I don't watch many adult ones for similar problems) I just happened to not be able to recall any that give like a hands on antagonist much of a strong-willed backstory? Which isn't always required of course, but what I mean is a lot of kids shows give the antagonist a pin point moment that makes them switch from neutral/a bit mean at worst to indescribably evil. Azula at base is ruthless but she exhibits perfectionism issues from her first speaking line in season 2.
Then again maybe I'm just not watching as many kid shows as I could, if you have any good ones that do this well I'd love to hear them!
awesome finale! just to note, Aang did manage to let go of katara and his earthly connections in Ba Sing Se when he reached avatar state, but bcos of Azula's lightning that killed him, the chakra got blocked and twisted so he can't enter the avatar state at all until it got unlocked

Giving her a meaningless position is what broke her: all her hard work, her effort to stay above zuko, and to have their father's love and approval meant absolutely everything to her. Being told that her entire life, everything she did was a huge waste, and no one truly loves her... ozai slammed the final nail in the coffin on her pyche. _and he never cared._ she was a tool, through and through.
I love how in Zuko's Firebending moves you can see he has adapted traits from all the Bending styles.
He will be firm and solid as an Earthbender when needed, flow like a Waterbender, or be as light on his feet as an Airbender.
He took Iroh's lessons from Book 2 to heart, and basically became a Mini-Avatar.
1:05:00 there's both: there's comics about the immediate post-war world in Aang's time, and there's a novel series called "Chronicles of the Avatar" that are some of my favorite books ever - they cover parts of Avatar Kyoshi & Avatar Yangchen's lives

One thing I think people fail to realise is that Aang is the only avatar to not kill anyone. He also was superseded by the longest worldwide peace in history. Kinda says something about that.

There’s so much in this episode few people talk about…
Azula’s break down was tragic. When her best friends betrayed her, she was unable to trust anyone else, ever. She was a child soldier, molded to be perfect for her father. She felt abandoned by her mother. All of that came back to her by the end.
And the best part is the show doesn’t let Zuko and Katara enjoy their victory right away. They show pity towards Azula’s state of mind.
When Aang was in his Avatar State (yip yip!), he sent out a gust of wind which previously was always effortlessly stopped by rock, but this time, the wind SLICED THROUGH a large chunk of a stone pillar. This just helps show off just how much power a full-powered Avatar has.
Ozai prided himself on his bending. So much so that once it was taken away, his identity was gone. He lost the will to fight (probably exhausted, too). Compare this to Zuko, who without his bending, was still a capable fighter.
And lastly, I hope when you guys watch Korra, you don’t shit on it like so many others. The writing isn’t as good as Aang’s generation, but it also had a few more obstacles against it as a series AND touches on things that most kid shows (by Nickelodeon standards) would never dare touch.
Another fun fact: Zuko used bending forms from all 4 nations during the Agni Kai. The fight is really the culmination of pure talent vs pure skill.
Remember in the season 2 finale, he did let go of Katara but Azula hit him with lightning which almost killed him but also blocked his connection to the Avatar state.
I was there while this show was originally airing and trust me, there was a HUGE fandom. Fanart, fanfiction, cosplay, online discussions, the whole thing. It wasn’t as crazy as it is now, but it was a whole thing 😊
The Last Agni Kai (Zuko vs Azula) will always be my #1 favourite fight of the show, the music, the fight choreography, and even the fire, is just beautiful and awe inspiring. As for the books, there are books about Avatar Kyoshi, and Graphic novels some based in-between episodes and after the show (one of them about Zuko's mother). Along with the live action, Avatar studios has announced the next Avatar, the Zuko movie and a movie about Aang and friends as adults (Dante Basco has already been confirmed to be coming back to play adult Zuko)
So there's a full new animated series coming or...?

One thing to note about the white lotus attacking Ba Sing Se:
Iroh is canonically one of the most powerful firebenders alive partly because of his ability to not only understand firebending from the source, the dragons, but also adapting his bending to work with the forms he learned from the other three elements so the when amplified by the comet he may as well be unstoppable.
Also his past experience of besieging Ba Sing Se and being the only person (prior to the drill) to ever penetrate its walls means he is probably the most well versed in the cities defenses, its weaknesses, and how to exploit them to ensure that his supercharged attack would easily break through. Also the fact that during his original siege the earth kingdom had wave after wave of earth benders to build fortifications and rebuild the wall but under fire nation control these guards are nowhere to be seen makes their defense even weaker in the first place.
I hope You guys will enjoy LOK, It isn't AS good as ATLA but for some exceptions It is a fun ride to say the least

Also another cool thing about the Zuko Azula Agnikai you see Zuko use stances from all 4 elements and not just the martial arts associated with fire bending. Showing he took Iroh’s advice of learning from the other nations to heart and applied it to his bending

I always thought that the scene where Aang takes Ozai's bending away was kind of a "Will he be able to defeat Ozai? Oh It's getting close!" kind of a way to build tension as Ozai's energy overcomes Aang slowly but I think it wasn't just that, it was also Aang's last test. We knew that, had Ozai won that, Aang would be destroyed. By sticking to his value to not kill Ozai even to the last moment where he was about to be completely destroyed he didn't break the connection or get a cheap shot in to kill him last second. He stuck to who he is and having not changed his mind even at the face of certain doom, his spirit proved to be unbendable and at that last moment, he got the ability to overpower Ozai.
I had the honor of seeing the voice actors of this show at Twin Cities Con in Minnesota this November. It's incredible to see the voice actors of Zuko, Azula, Aang, Iroh, and Sokka share stories and still have passion for a show they came out so many years ago. Zuko and Azula VA's especially had so much to say and share its awe-inspiring.

So somebody made a fan comic about Sokka asking a similar question about being able to gain abilities to bend. He asks Aang if he could borrow Ozai’s fire, bending for just a few minutes, so he could prank Zuko and it’s hilarious. 😂 Highly recommend looking it up.
One thing almost all reactors miss is that the the reason Aang could not go into the Avatar state was because when Azula shot him with lighting it locked his 7th chakra. He literally says this in an exposition dump in B3C10 (The invasion). It has nothing to do with Katara.
You also get a hint of this info in the season 3 premiere (B3C1) when Katara is given Aang a healing session when she focuses where the lightning hit that when Aang flashes back to being hit by lighting.
So when Aang hits that spot in his fight with Ozai it unlocks the blocked chakra.
Yes the comics are all canon and pick up after the show. There are also Korra comics that pick up after that show ends so wait to you finish the show. The is also a Kyoshi graphic novel.
The movie is horrific. The only reason to watch is so you can yell at the screen.

Great series and Korra is coming up next 🥰. I wonder if you guys can catch the small hint of Avatar lore, hint "who does Korra remind you of visually". Korra is entertaining in its own way but its definitely a different flavour from ATLA but it also give huge lore drops on the Avatar's past all the way to the first Avatar.
I highly recommend reading the books because a lot of them fill in the gaps on how the world is starting to heal, how the people interact, what happened to some characters and they don't answer, who did Sokka marries? Have a great week @Sorta Stupid .
During Ozai and Aang's final battle, there is a callback to the beginning of each bending styles that Aang learns. The Dragon dance (fire bending) when Aang fire blasted Ozai's airship, Seismic sense before Aang's spirit bending (Earth bending), and when Aang uses push and pull the extinguish the forest fires (Water bending). Perfectly tying in what Aang learns initially and how much his bending has grown in such a short time.

1:02:58 the main reason people hate on the great divide so much is because nickelodeon would air that episode nonstop. Like literally once a month for years. Nickelodeon sort of ordered them to make it as a racism metaphor episode. A lot of people don't understand that Aang killing the Firelord wouldn't have just been bad for his enlightenment, it would have been the wrong way to end the war. Aang isn't just the Avatar, he's the Last Airbender as well, it's important for the story of _this_ Avatar so the show is named such for a reason. If the Avatar's goal is to bring balance to an unbalanced world, it would not do to completely abandon the culture and values taken from the Air Nomads, the one culture on Earth that disappeared and only existed through him, one of the 4 cultures that empowers the Avatar to be so strong in the first place.
Even Avatar Yangchen was wrong, he was not in it for personal enlightenment, he genuinely believes all life as intrinsic value so giving himself excuses to make him feel better about doing something so dark has absolutely no bearing. It didn't matter if he forgave himself or not, one valued life would have been gone by the hands of the only person with the wisdom of the air nomads left. It would have died with Ozai and thevworld would have only had 3 great cultures instead of the needed 4. When Iroh was talking about the 4 elements making everyone stronger, not just the Avatar, he was not only referring to the martial arts but the wisdoms and teachings and cultures. That's why he likely taught Zuko the redirect lightning move he made from waterbending arts, not just because it was a good weapon but because he was hoping he would gain that adaptability, sense of community and love he said the Water Tribe had that holds them through anything.
I think a lot of people who feel it was just a copout are the same who are like "why doesn't Batman just kill everyone", and they don't look deeper because the default option is just "eliminate bad people no matter the concerns." Just as Iroh should not have been the one to take down Ozai assuming that he could, the Avatar couldn't abandon the wisdom of the world to save it. If he remains detached from people as Guru Pathik taught, yet remained attached to the worldly as Avatar Yangchen said, then what exactly keeps the Avatar from remaining good? What keeps him in line with the well being of the world, and not just a guy with a cool power up who dispenses justice according to his own personal needs? (I know Korra answered this a different way but it came out years after this and imo completely misunderstood this. That was kind of a cop out, they really should've asked Aaron Ehasz to consult.) The other Avatars would have had him abuse his power, instead of having him control it to only take as much as he needs. In the end it was only balanced that the culture almost eradicated from the world by Sozin's comet would be the one with the wisdom to save it from Sozin's comet.
The Lion Turtle thing was pretty sudden won't lie, they could have done more than just one mention of him in the library. But it was clear they were trying to show that the world is more ancient than the Avatar, it has more wisdom than even one person with a thousand lives might have accumulated. He is a servent to the world, the physical and the spiritual, not its commander. And while the energy bending thing should've been set up earlier, it makes sense since in both Chinese and Japanese spiritual beliefs and martial arts, the 5th element, the void, is just as important as the other 4, it's where the 4 main elements arise from. Maybe they messed up because they wanted to show the 4 elements everyone already knew and they could make work for fighting, but since this cartoon is so deep in Eastern Asian philosophies and cultures and martial arts that 5th element talk needed to happen sooner or later. We know the Avatar himself did not always exist, so something must've come before.
That being said, I know the Netflix show is going to have Aang kill Firelord Ozai

I've really loved watching yall react to this series. It has had a special place in my heart for years and it's always so fun to watch ppl get the satisfaction when they complete it for the first time. As for Korra, I first watched it when it first came out and did not like it at all. But after years I came back to it and gave it a full watch through a few times over and I ended up loving it. As others have probably told you, don't try to compare Korra to the last airbender. It is its own show and deserves to be seen as such. Korra touches on mature topics that airbender did not and I think does a great job. Also, keep in mind the flow/pacing might seem off especially in the first and second seasons because the writers kept being told that they wouldn't be getting a new season and then turned out they did. looking forward to those reactions! :)
ATLA is really a great animated series, one that so many people can enjoy and rewatch several times over. I’m glad that I got into it when I did. Also, I’m really excited for the upcoming project that avatar Studios has in store for us, a feature length film starring the OG Avatar group in their as adults.

Avatar Kuruk and Avatar Yangchen have very interesting lives that are intertwined with one another. Avatar Yangchen was exalted as a very accomplished Avatar who was able to ensure peace, especially because, despite the fact she was part of the Air Nomads, she was not as passive as them, willing to sacrifice spiritual enlightment to ensure the balance between the Nations. However, she did had one flaw that ended becoming the doom of her successor. Whenever there was conflict between humans and spirits, she would normally side with the humans (basically giving them what they wanted), coming up with deals to satisfy the spirits, hoping that humans would keep their part of the bargain, only for the laters to break those deals a few generations later, which resulted in many dark spirits to appear during Kuruk's time, forcing him to fight those dark spirits, what led him to develop a spiritual sickeness that shorted his own life (he is the Avatar with the shortest lifespan, with 33 years). This constant fight with dark spirits caused Kuruk to neglect his duties in the physical plane and pursue a hedonistic lifestyle to cope with his stress and spiritual affliction, what eventually led to Koh steal his lover's face.

I watched this live as a kid and it was a once in a lifetime experience. I firmly believe this is up there as a legendary finale. The best three I've seen are this and the ones for MASH and Blackadder. I guess I have a thing for moments of truth in wartime finales.

You have no idea. When this show was coming out for the first time in 2005 there were VERY heated SHIP WARS between every ship you can imagine lmao The main War being between Kataang (Katara + Aang) and Zutara (Zuko = Katara)
This season did a good job with Iroh despite losing the original voice actor, who made Iroh so iconic. I just feel like Iroh is so powerful this season clapping, working out, and snoring… his silence made this character powerful. The new voice is tough to get past. I appreciate someone stepping in to do it, but it kinda changes Iroh’s character a bit.
I just realised.
In the last Episode of Book 2, the lightning came in from Aang's back and exited through his foot when Azula shot him. However, in the last episode of Book 3, the lightning came from the front (when Ozai shot at him) and exited upwards via his hand toward the sky (when Aang willingly decides where the lightning should go.
1) Nice symmetry and poetic justice in a way where it's back and below vs front and above.
2) End of Book 2, Aang had no choice where the lightning could go but end of Book 3, Aang could and did made a decision of where to redirect the lightning.
Amazing comparisons.
I enjoyed watching this series through again with y'all, it reminded me of why it's the goat. I know it has its flaws but i can't wait to see you guys watch Korra too tbh

The story of how Avatar Kuruk lost his bride to Koh was shared twice: the first time was in the online game (on the Nickelodeon website before Book 3 premiered) Escape from the Spirit World and the second time was in the Avatar Kyoshi novel. Some folks have recorded the Escape from the Spirit World gameplay/story, so if you want some more ATLA content, there you go. Note that there's no vocal narration in there, just subtitles.
The one thing I wish the finale had shown: Toph interacting with Bumi. Imagine the shenanigans!!!
For the post-finale comics, there's The Promise and The Search. There's also PRIVATE FIRE--the story of how Sokka's alter ego WANG FIRE infiltrated the FIRE NATION ARMY while they were still in disguise in the Fire Nation. It's---it's hilarious. Must read!

Funny you mentioned Ozai looked like a He-Man villain since Mark Hamill voiced Skeletor in the Netflix Masters of the Universe: Revelation series and in the upcoming Revolution next year.
Azula's Mental breakdown is so sad 😢 😭 it's not her fault that she's was bad it's because of her father who used and treated her like a weapon for the Fire Nation. Azula's mother loved her very much. Azula didn't know she loved her mother, but deep down her mother loved her very much and one of the same amount of love she gave Zuko overall, seeing her breakdown like that goes to show that what a person can do to someone's mental mind. I heard in the comics of Avatar The last Airbender she does get a redeeming arc.
A quest of redemption is a heavy burden for Azula.
Azulas whole reality got shattered. She was raised in a broken family and followed the thought of fear being the only effective tool. Being in controll was her path to follow. She was a perfectionist. Now all these things she believed in are proofen wrong. Betrayed by her friends because love was stronger than fear. She misscalculated. Something that probably never happened to her. Azulas is such a tragic character and so well written.
Book 3, Episode 18: I love the detail that they trust Zuko enough now that when he first starts attacking Aang, they don't assume that he was a double agent or turned evil again. And I love that we see Appa and Momo trust him, with Momo hiding behind his leg and him flying Appa. I love that they brought back Joon. It seems out of nowhere but it makes sense when you consider the role she filled in her season 1 episode. You were right Ruff, way back during the episode “The Storm” Ozai utterly hates Zuko. He also doesn’t like Azula. He is an entitled narcissist. He’s the worst kind of ruler.
Book 3, Episode 19: So the Lion Turtle is foreshadowed way back in Book 2 in the Library. Also, I highly recommend both Kyoshi books and the Yangchen book. This is the only time we meet Yangchen in the series but she is super interesting. Her book _The Dawn of Yangchen_ is a crazy spy novel.
Book 3, Episode 19: I love that they bring back the old masters. And in the scene where Iroh and Zuko reunite, Iroh has no idea about the things Zuko has done to redeem himself. He doesn't know Zuko joined the Avatar, taught him firebending, risked his life several times, etc. All Iroh knows at the moment is that his nephew found him again and is sorry, and that's enough for him to forgive Zuko for everything.
Book 3, Episode 20: What’s really cool is that the look on Ozai’s face when Aang redirects the lightning isn’t just shock that he did it. It’s shock knowing that Zuko fulfilled his claim to Ozai that he was going to help Aang defeat the fire nation because Zuko is the only other person to redirect lightning. Also, Azula’s mental breakdown doesn’t actually start in the finale. It starts with Mai’s betrayal and Mai telling her “I love Zuko more than I fear you” because Azula has always valued fear over love.
Book 3, Episode 21: And that’s all she wrote. This is one of the best series finales ever. I love the way the first episode is titled “The Boy in the Iceberg” and the last is titled “Avatar Aang.” It really nicely bookends the show. I love that the first and last words of dialogue say “It’s perfect.” And I love the way they resolved the issue of killing Ozai. I love that the tiger-dillo roar comes back. First Aang does it in part 1, then Ozai does it, then Avatar State Aang does it. The question of Zuko’s mother Ursa is answered in the comic The Search, which I highly recommend. Katara and Aang hugging before they kiss is really important because it signifies that they were friends first and that this isn't just the hero getting the girl. I really hope you follow up with Legend of Korra. It is a weaker series in terms of writing but it is still excellent!
